In this paper, we present a novel auto-calibration scheme for the joint estimation of the two-dimensional (2-D) direction-of-arrival (DOA) and the mutual coupling matrix (MCM) for a signal measured using uniform circular arrays. The method employs an integrated wideband dictionary to mitigate the detrimental effects of the discretization of the continuous parameter space over the considered azimuth and elevation angles. This leads to a reduction of the computational complexity and obtaining of more accurate DOA estimates. Given the more reliable DOA estimates, the method also allows for the estimation of more accurate mutual coupling coefficients. The method utilizes an integrated dictionary in order to iteratively refine the active parameter space, thereby reducing the required computational complexity without reducing the overall performance. The complexity is further reduced by employing only the dominant subspace of the measured signal. Furthermore, the proposed method does not require a constraint on the prior knowledge of the number of nonzero coupling coefficients nor suffer from ambiguity problems. Moreover, a simple formulation for 2-D non-numerical integration is presented. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Despite many advantages of direction-of-arrivals (DOAs) in sparse representation domain, they have high computational complexity. This paper presents a new method for real-valued 2-D DOAs estimation of sources in a uniform circular array configuration. This method uses a transformation based on phase mode excitation in uniform circular arrays which called real beamspace L1-SVD (RB-L1SVD). This unitary transformation converts complex manifold matrix to real one, so that the computational complexity is decreased with respect to complex valued computations, its computation, at least, is one, fourth of the complex-valued case; moreover, some benefits from using this transformation are robustness to array imperfections, a better noise suppression because of exploiting an additional real structure, and etc. Numerical results demonstrate the better performance of the proposed approach over previous techniques such as C-L1SVD, RB-ESPRIT, and RB-MUSIC, especially in low signal-to-noise ratios.

Interactions between the government officials and civilians affect public wellbeing and the state legitimacy that is necessary for the functioning of democratic society. Police officers, the most visible and contacted agents of the state, interact with the public more than 20 million times a year during traffic stops. Today, these interactions are regularly recorded by body-worn cameras (BWCs), which are lauded as a means to enhance police accountability and improve police-public interactions. However, the timely analysis of these recordings is hampered by a lack of reliable automated tools that can enable the analysis of these complex and contested police-public interactions. This article proposes an approach to develo** new multi-perspective, multimodal machine learning (ML) tools to analyze the audio, video, and transcript information from this BWC footage. Our approach begins by identifying the aspects of communication most salient to different stakeholders, including both community members and police officers. We move away from modeling approaches built around the existence of a single ground truth and instead utilize new advances in soft labeling to incorporate variation in how different observers perceive the same interactions. We argue that this inclusive approach to the conceptualization and design of new ML tools is broadly applicable to the study of communication and development of analytic tools across domains of human interaction, including education, medicine, and the workplace.

COVID-19 continues to be considered an endemic disease in spite of the World Health Organization's declaration that the pandemic is over. This pandemic has disrupted people's lives in unprecedented ways and caused widespread morbidity and mortality. As a result, it is important for emergency physicians to identify patients with a higher mortality risk in order to prioritize hospital equipment, especially in areas with limited medical services. The collected data from patients is beneficial to predict the outcome of COVID-19 cases, although there is a question about which data makes the most accurate predictions. Therefore, this study aims to accomplish two main objectives. First, we want to examine whether deep learning algorithms can predict a patient's morality. Second, we investigated the impact of Clinical and RT-PCR on prediction to determine which one is more reliable. We defined four stages with different feature sets and used interpretable deep learning methods to build appropriate model. Based on results, the deep neural decision forest performed the best across all stages and proved its capability to predict the recovery and death of patients. Additionally, results indicate that Clinical alone (without the use of RT-PCR) is the most effective method of diagnosis, with an accuracy of 80%. It is important to document and understand experiences from the COVID-19 pandemic in order to aid future medical efforts. This study can provide guidance for medical professionals in the event of a crisis or outbreak similar to COVID-19.

Chromosome analysis is essential for diagnosing genetic disorders. For hematologic malignancies, identification of somatic clonal aberrations by karyotype analysis remains the standard of care. However, karyoty** is costly and time-consuming because of the largely manual process and the expertise required in identifying and annotating aberrations. Efforts to automate karyotype analysis to date fell short in aberration detection. Using a training set of ~10k patient specimens and ~50k karyograms from over 5 years from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, we created a labeled set of images representing individual chromosomes. These individual chromosomes were used to train and assess deep learning models for classifying the 24 human chromosomes and identifying chromosomal aberrations. The top-accuracy models utilized the recently introduced Topological Vision Transformers (TopViTs) with 2-level-block-Toeplitz masking, to incorporate structural inductive bias. TopViT outperformed CNN (Inception) models with >99.3% accuracy for chromosome identification, and exhibited accuracies >99% for aberration detection in most aberrations. Notably, we were able to show high-quality performance even in "few shot" learning scenarios. Incorporating the definition of clonality substantially improved both precision and recall (sensitivity). When applied to "zero shot" scenarios, the model captured aberrations without training, with perfect precision at >50% recall. Together these results show that modern deep learning models can approach expert-level performance for chromosome aberration detection. To our knowledge, this is the first study demonstrating the downstream effectiveness of TopViTs. These results open up exciting opportunities for not only expediting patient results but providing a scalable technology for early screening of low-abundance chromosomal lesions.

Change detection (CD) is an important problem in remote sensing, especially in disaster time for urban management. Most existing traditional methods for change detection are categorized based on pixel or objects. Object-based models are preferred to pixel-based methods for handling very high-resolution remote sensing (VHR RS) images. Such methods can benefit from the ongoing research on deep learning. In this paper, a fully automatic change-detection algorithm on VHR RS images is proposed that deploys Fully Convolutional Siamese Concatenate networks (FC-Siam-Conc). The proposed method uses preprocessing and an attention gate layer to improve accuracy. Gaussian attention (GA) as a soft visual attention mechanism is used for preprocessing. GA helps the network to handle feature maps like biological visual systems. Since the GA parameters cannot be adjusted during network training, an attention gate layer is introduced to play the role of GA with parameters that can be tuned among other network parameters. Experimental results obtained on Onera Satellite Change Detection (OSCD) and RIVER-CD datasets confirm the superiority of the proposed architecture over the state-of-the-art algorithms.

STATCOMs is used widely in power systems these days. Traditionally, this converter was controlled using a double-loop control or Direct Output Voltage (DOV) controller. But DOV controller do not function properly during a three-phase fault and has a lot of overshoot. Also, the number of PI controllers used in double-loop control is high, which led to complexities when adjusting the coefficients. Therefore, in this paper, an improved DOV method is proposed which, in addition to a reduced number of PI controllers, has a higher speed, lower overshoots and a higher stability in a wider range. By validating the proposed DOV method for controlling the STATCOMs, it has been attempted to improve the dynamical behaviors of induction motor using Matlab/Simulink, and the results indicate a better performance of the proposed method as compared to the other methods.
