As the power system continues to be flooded with intermittent resources, it becomes more important to accurately assess the role of hydro and its impact on the power grid. While hydropower generation has been studied for decades, dependency of power generation on water availability and constraints in hydro operation are not well represented in power system models used in the planning and operation of large-scale interconnection studies. There are still multiple modeling gaps that need to be addressed; if not, they can lead to inaccurate operation and planning reliability studies, and consequently to unintentional load shedding or even blackouts. As a result, it is very important that hydropower is represented correctly in both steady-state and dynamic power system studies. In this paper, we discuss the development and use of the Hydrological Dispatch and Analysis Tool (Hy-DAT) as an interactive graphical user interface, that uses a novel methodology to address the hydropower modeling gaps like water availability and interdependency using a database and algorithms to generate accurate representative models for power system simulation.

Power System Resource Planning is the recurrent process of studying and determining what facilities and procedures should be provided to satisfy and promote appropriate future demands for electricity. The electric power system as planned should meet or balance societal goals. These include availability of electricity to all potential users at lowest possible cost, minimum environmental damage, high levels of safety and reliability, etc. Plans should be technically and financially feasible. Plans also should achieve the objectives the entity doing the planning, including minimizing risk. The emergence of meta-heuristics has given robustness to the non-analytical methods, because of the rationale behind them. Besides, evolutionary algorithms have provided a higher degree of confidence in a stochastic convergence to optimum and have supported this confidence with a mathematical background explaining not only how they achieve convergence but also how to improve the convergence rate. The present work of analyses and implementation can be divided into: i) Transmission Constrained Generation Expansion Planning (TC GEP), ii) Composite Generation Expansion and Transmission Network Expansion Planning (GEP TNEP), iii) Transmission Network Expansion (TNEP) Planning using AC model, iv) Composite Transmission Network Expansion Planning (TNEP) and Reactive Power Expansion Planning (RPP) and v) Transmission Network Planning using Interior-Point Method (IP TNEP).

In the evolving power system, where new renewable resources continually displace conventional generation, conventional hydropower resources can be an important asset that helps to maintain reliability and flexibility. Varying climatic patterns do affect the operational pattern of hydropower. This would potentially play a vital role in meeting and delivering energy and meeting climate policy needs. Hydropower is one of the oldest forms of renewable energy resources, however, its dependency on water availability and other constraints are not well represented in power system steady state and dynamic models. This leads to multiple gaps in operations planning especially due to high intermittent renewable generation. Operating constraints and lack of high-quality data often become a barrier to hydropower modeling which leads to inconsistencies in reliability and operational planning studies resulting in unintentional blackouts or unforeseen situations. This paper identifies some of the gaps in hydro-based generation representation in steady-state and dynamic models and provides recommendations for their mitigation.

This paper has delved into the pressing need for intelligent emergency control in large-scale power systems, which are experiencing significant transformations and are operating closer to their limits with more uncertainties. Learning-based control methods are promising and have shown effectiveness for intelligent power system control. However, when they are applied to large-scale power systems, there are multifaceted challenges such as scalability, adaptiveness, and security posed by the complex power system landscape, which demand comprehensive solutions. The paper first proposes and instantiates a convergence framework for integrating power systems physics, machine learning, advanced computing, and grid control to realize intelligent grid control at a large scale. Our developed methods and platform based on the convergence framework have been applied to a large (more than 3000 buses) Texas power system, and tested with 56000 scenarios. Our work achieved a 26% reduction in load shedding on average and outperformed existing rule-based control in 99.7% of the test scenarios. The results demonstrated the potential of the proposed convergence framework and DRL-based intelligent control for the future grid.

Energy-efficient sense amplifier (SA) circuits are essential for reliable detection of stored memory states in emerging memory systems. In this work, we present four novel sense amplifier (SA) topologies based on phase transition material (PTM) tailored for non-volatile memory applications. We utilize the abrupt switching and volatile hysteretic characteristics of PTMs which enables efficient and fast sensing operation in our proposed SA topologies. We provide comprehensive details of their functionality and assess how process variations impact their performance metrics. Our proposed sense amplifier topologies manifest notable performance enhancement. We achieve a ~67% reduction in sensing delay and a ~80% decrease in sensing power for current sensing. For voltage sensing, we achieve a ~75% reduction in sensing delay and a ~33% decrease in sensing power. Moreover, the proposed SA topologies exhibit improved variation robustness compared to conventional SAs. We also scrutinize the dependence of transistor mirroring window and PTM transition voltages on several device parameters to determine the optimum operating conditions and stance of tunability for each of the proposed SA topologies.

Mitigation of fossil fuel dependency is becoming a major concern in most of the countries around the globe. In that context, this research article presents the single phase two stage boost inverter system for wave energy conversion. The proposed wave energy based power conditioning system includes wave energy based functional block, permanent magnet synchronous generator, zeta converter, single phase H-bridge inverter and a resistive load. The boost inverter is used to boost up the voltage availed from the permanent magnet generator powered by a wave energy converter system using zeta converter and then invert it using an H-bridge inverter. Hence variable magnitude AC voltage is converted to constant magnitude AC voltage at constant frequency. The blocks of each component is designed to deliver the power of 1kW at the load terminals and simulation study is carried out in the MATLAB / Simulink platform for further analysis. The simulation results are presented and discussed to show how wave powered boost inverter can efficiently convert the wave energy to electrical energy and condition the electrical power before feeding it to any AC load or AC grid. The performance analysis of wave energy conversion system based on zeta converter is included at the end of the article

This paper investigates the effectiveness of Soft-Attention in deep neural architectures. The central aim of Soft-Attention is to boost the value of important features and suppress the noise-inducing features. We compare the performance of VGG, ResNet, InceptionResNetv2 and DenseNet architectures with and without the Soft-Attention mechanism, while classifying skin lesions. The original network when coupled with Soft-Attention outperforms the baseline[16] by 4.7% while achieving a precision of 93.7% on HAM10000 dataset [25]. Additionally, Soft-Attention coupling improves the sensitivity score by 3.8% compared to baseline[31] and achieves 91.6% on ISIC-2017 dataset [2]. The code is publicly available at github.

To leverage the possible gains in throughput and energy efficiency (EE) of full-duplex (FD) communications, we consider a FD CF mMIMO system with practical limited-capacity fronthaul links. We derive closed-form spectral efficiency (SE) lower bounds for this system with maximum-ratio combining/maximum-ratio transmission processing and optimal uniform quantization. We then optimize the weighted sum EE (WSEE) via downlink and uplink power control by using a {two-layered} approach: the first layer formulates the optimization as a generalized convex program, while the second layer solves the optimization decentrally using alternating direction method of multipliers. We analytically show that the proposed two-layered formulation yields a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker point of the original WSEE optimization. We numerically show the influence of weights on the individual EE of the users, which demonstrates the utility of WSEE metric to incorporate heterogeneous EE requirements of users. We show that the low fronthaul capacity reduces the number of users each AP can support, and the cell-free system, consequently, becomes user-centric.

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the world, affecting over 70 million people. The cumbersome Standard Automated Perimetry (SAP) test is most frequently used to detect visual loss due to glaucoma. Due to the SAP test's innate difficulty and its high test-retest variability, we propose the RetiNerveNet, a deep convolutional recursive neural network for obtaining estimates of the SAP visual field. RetiNerveNet uses information from the more objective Spectral-Domain Optical Coherence Tomography (SDOCT). RetiNerveNet attempts to trace-back the arcuate convergence of the retinal nerve fibers, starting from the Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer (RNFL) thickness around the optic disc, to estimate individual age-corrected 24-2 SAP values. Recursive passes through the proposed network sequentially yield estimates of the visual locations progressively farther from the optic disc. While all the methods used for our experiments exhibit lower performance for the advanced disease group, the proposed network is observed to be more accurate than all the baselines for estimating the individual visual field values. We further augment RetiNerveNet to additionally predict the SAP Mean Deviation values and also create an ensemble of RetiNerveNets that further improves the performance, by increasingly weighting-up underrepresented parts of the training data.
