Millimeter wave (mmWave) communications are sensitive to blockage over radio propagation paths. The emerging paradigm of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has the potential to overcome this issue by its ability to arbitrarily reflect the incident signals toward desired directions. This paper proposes a Neyman-Pearson (NP) criterion-based blockage-aware algorithm to improve communication resilience against blockage in mobile mmWave multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems. By virtue of this pragmatic blockage-aware technique, we further propose an outage-constrained beamforming design for downlink mmWave MIMO transmission to achieve outage probability minimization and achievable rate maximization. To minimize the outage probability, a robust RIS beamformer with variant beamwidth is designed to combat uncertain channel state information (CSI). For the rate maximization problem, an accelerated projected gradient descent (PGD) algorithm is developed to solve the computational challenge of high-dimensional RIS phase-shift matrix (PSM) optimization. Particularly, we leverage a subspace constraint to reduce the scope of the projection operation and formulate a new Nesterov momentum acceleration scheme to speed up the convergence process of PGD. Extensive experiments confirm the effectiveness of the proposed blockage-aware approach, and the proposed accelerated PGD algorithm outperforms a number of representative baseline algorithms in terms of the achievable rate.

This paper investigates the resource management problem in multi-carrier rate-splitting multiple access (MC-RSMA) systems with imperfect channel state information (CSI) and successive interference cancellation (SIC) for ultra-reliable and low-latency communications (URLLC) applications. To explore the trade-off between the decoding error probability and achievable rate, effective throughput (ET) is adopted as the utility function in this study. Then, a mixed-integer non-convex problem is formulated, where power allocation, rate control, and user grou** are jointly taken into consideration. To tackle this problem, we approximate the achievable ET using a lower bound and then develop a decomposition method to decouple optimization variables. Specifically, for a given user grou** scheme, an iteration-based concave-convex programming (CCCP) method and an iteration-free lower-bound approximation (LBA) method are proposed for power allocation and rate control. Next, a greedy search-based scheme and a heuristic grou** scheme are developed for the user-grou** problem. The simulation results verify the effectiveness of the CCCP and LBA methods in power allocation and rate control and the greedy search-based and heuristic grou** methods in user grou**. Besides, the superiority of RSMA for URLLC services is demonstrated when compared to spatial division multiple access.

Holographic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications are widely recognized as a promising candidate for the next-generation air interface. With holographic MIMO surface, the number of the spatial degrees-of-freedom (DoFs) considerably increases and also significantly varies as the user moves. To fully employ the large and varying number of spatial DoFs, the number of equipped RF chains has to be larger than or equal to the largest number of spatial DoFs. However, this causes much waste as radio frequency (RF) chains (especially the transmit RF chains) are costly and power-hungry. To avoid the heavy burden, this paper investigates green holographic MIMO communications with a few transmit RF chains under an electromagnetic-based communication model. We not only look at the fundamental capacity limits but also propose an effective transmission, namely non-uniform holographic pattern modulation (NUHPM), to achieve the capacity limit in the high signal-to-noise (SNR) regime. The analytical result sheds light on the green evaluation of MIMO communications, which can be realized by increasing the size of the antenna aperture without increasing the number of transmit RF chains. Numerical results are provided to verify our analysis and to show the great performance gain by employing the additional spatial DoFs as modulation resources.

Communication and sensing are two important features of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAVs). In traditional vehicle-mounted devices, communication and sensing modules exist but in an isolated way, resulting in a waste of hardware resources and wireless spectrum. In this paper, to cope with the above inefficiency, we propose a vehicular behavior-aware integrated sensing and communication (VBA-ISAC) beamforming design for the vehicle-mounted transmitter with multiple antennas. In this work, beams are steered based on vehicular behaviors to assist driving and meanwhile provide spectral-efficient uplink data services with the help of a roadside unit (RSU). Specifically, we first predict the area of interest (AoI) to be sensed based on the vehicles' trajectories. Then, we formulate a VBA-ISAC beamforming design problem to sense the AoI while maximizing the spectral efficiency of uplink communications, where a trade-off factor is introduced to balance the communication and sensing performance. A semi-definite relaxation-based beampattern mismatch minimization (SDR-BMM) algorithm is proposed to solve the formulated problem. To reduce the hardware cost and power consumption, we further improve the proposed VBA-ISAC beamforming design by introducing the hybrid analog-digital (HAD) structure. Numerical results verify the effectiveness of VBA-ISAC scheme and show that the proposed beamforming design outperforms the benchmarks in both spectral efficiency and radar beampattern.

As 5G networks rolling out in many different countries nowadays, the time has come to investigate how to upgrade and expand them towards 6G, where the latter is expected to realize the interconnection of everything as well as the development of a ubiquitous intelligent mobile world for intelligent life. To enable this epic leap in communications, this article provides an overview and outlook on the application of sparse code multiple access (SCMA) for 6G wireless communication systems, which is an emerging disruptive non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) scheme for the enabling of massive connectivity. We propose to apply SCMA to a massively distributed access system (MDAS), whose architecture is based on fiber-based visible light communication (FVLC), ultra-dense network (UDN), and NOMA. Under this framework, we consider the interactions between optical front-hauls and wireless access links. In order to stimulate more upcoming research in this area, we outline a number of promising directions associated with SCMA for faster, more reliable, and more efficient multiple access in future 6G communication networks.

In this letter, we propose a power allocation scheme for relayed orthogonal frequency division multiplexing with index modulation (OFDM-IM) systems. The proposed power allocation scheme replies on artificial neural network (ANN) and deep learning to allocate transmit power among various subcarriers at the source and relay nodes. The objective of the power allocation scheme is to minimize the overall transmit power under a set of constraints. Without loss of generality, we assume all subcarriers at source and relay nodes are independently distributed with different statistical distribution parameters. The relay node adopts the fixed-gain amplify-and-forward (FG AF) relaying protocol. We employ the adaptive moment estimation method (Adam) to implement back-propagation learning and simulate the proposed power allocation scheme. The analytical and simulation results show that the proposed power allocation scheme is able to provide comparable performance as the optimal solution but with lower complexity.

To exploit the spatial gain of OFDM-SNM, we propose a relay assisted OFDM-SNM scheme for multi-hop cooperative systems in this letter. It is stipulated that a relay operated by decode-and-forward (DF) and half-duplex (HD) protocols exists in each hop. We analyze the outage performance of the relay assisted OFDM-SNM system. The average outage probability is approximated in closed form. Moreover, to reveal the diversity and coding gains of relay assisted OFDM-SNM, we explore the asymptotic outage performance at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by power series expansion. To verify the improvement on outage performance and energy efficiency, we carry out the comparison among different multi-hops systems with traditional OFDM-SNM fixing a certain distance from source to destination. Simulation results corroborate the derived outage probabilities and provide insight into the proposed system in this letter.

The proposed system needs neither instantaneous channel state information (CSI) nor complicated processing at the relay node. It operates based on the power allocation scheme that minimizes the sum of transmit power at both source and relay node, given an outage probability constraint. Through a series of problem transformation and simplification, we convert the original power allocation problem to its relaxed version and solve it using convex programming techniques. To reveal the computing efficiency of the proposed power allocation scheme, we analyze its computational complexity. Numerical simulations substantiate that the proposed optimization scheme has a neglectable loss compared with the brute force search, but the computational complexity can be considerably reduced.

In this paper, we propose an enhanced Huffman coded orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing with index modulation (EHC-OFDM-IM) scheme. The proposed scheme is capable of utilizing all legitimate subcarrier activation patterns (SAPs) and adapting the bijective map** relation between SAPs and leaves on a given Huffman tree according to channel state information (CSI). As a result, a dynamic codebook update mechanism is obtained, which can provide more reliable transmissions. We take the average block error rate (BLER) as the performance evaluation metric and approximate it in closed form when the transmit power allocated to each subcarrier is independent of channel states. Also, we propose two CSI-based power allocation schemes with different requirements for computational complexity to further improve the error performance. Subsequently, we carry out numerical simulations to corroborate the error performance analysis and the proposed dynamic power allocation schemes. By studying the numerical results, we find that the depth of the Huffman tree has a significant impact on the error performance when the SAP-to-leaf map** relation is optimized based on CSI. Meanwhile, through numerical results, we also discuss the trade-off between error performance and data transmission rate and investigate the impacts of imperfect CSI on the error performance of EHC-OFDM-IM.

A novel modulation scheme termed orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing with subcarrier number modulation (OFDM-SNM) has been proposed and regarded as one of the promising candidate modulation schemes for next generation networks. Although OFDM-SNM is capable of having a higher spectral efficiency (SE) than OFDM with index modulation (OFDM-IM) and plain OFDM under certain conditions, its reliability is relatively inferior to these existing schemes, because the number of active subcarriers varies. In this regard, we propose an enhanced OFDM-SNM scheme in this paper, which utilizes the flexibility of placing subcarriers to harvest a coding gain in the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region. In particular, we stipulate a methodology that optimizes the subcarrier activation pattern (SAP) by subcarrier assignment using instantaneous channel state information (CSI) and therefore the subcarriers with higher channel power gains will be granted the priority to be activated, given the number of subcarriers is fixed. We also analyze the proposed enhanced OFDM-SNM system in terms of outage and error performance. The average outage probability and block error rate (BLER) are derived and approximated in closed-form expressions, which are further verified by numerical results generated by Monte Carlo simulations. The high-reliability nature of the enhanced OFDM-SNM makes it a promising candidate for implementing in the Internet of Things (IoT) with stationary machine-type devices (MTDs), which are subject to slow fading and supported by proper power supply.

This paper investigates generic signal sha** methods for multiple-data-stream generalized spatial modulation (GenSM) and generalized quadrature spatial modulation (GenQSM) based on the maximizing the minimum Euclidean distance (MMED) criterion. Three cases with different channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) are considered, including no CSIT, statistical CSIT and perfect CSIT. A unified optimization problem is formulated to find the optimal transmit vector set under size, power and sparsity constraints. We propose an optimization-based signal sha** (OBSS) approach by solving the formulated problem directly and a codebook-based signal sha** (CBSS) approach by finding sub-optimal solutions in discrete space. In the OBSS approach, we reformulate the original problem to optimize the signal constellations used for each transmit antenna combination (TAC). Both the size and entry of all signal constellations are optimized. Specifically, we suggest the use of a recursive design for size optimization. The entry optimization is formulated as a non-convex large-scale quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP) problem and can be solved by existing optimization techniques with rather high complexity. To reduce the complexity, we propose the CBSS approach using a codebook generated by quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) symbols and a low-complexity selection algorithm to choose the optimal transmit vector set. Simulation results show that the OBSS approach exhibits the optimal performance in comparison with existing benchmarks. However, the OBSS approach is impractical for large-size signal sha** and adaptive signal sha** with instantaneous CSIT due to the demand of high computational complexity. As a low-complexity approach, CBSS shows comparable performance and can be easily implemented in large-size systems.

Millimeter wave (mmWave) has been claimed to be the only viable solution for high-bandwidth vehicular communications. However, frequent channel estimation and beamforming required to provide a satisfactory quality of service limits mmWave for vehicular communications. In this paper, we propose a novel channel estimation and beam tracking framework for mmWave communications in a vehicular network setting. For channel estimation, we propose an algorithm termed robust adaptive multi-feedback (RAF) that achieves comparable estimation performance as existing channel estimation algorithms, with a significantly smaller number of feedback bits. We derive upper and lower bounds on the probability of estimation error (PEE) of the RAF algorithm, given a number of channel estimations, whose accuracy is verified through Monte Carlo simulations. For beam tracking, we propose a new practical model for mmWave vehicular communications. In contrast to the prior works, the model is based on position, velocity, and channel coefficient, which allows a significant improvement of the tracking performance. Focused on the new beam tracking model, we re-derive the equations for Jacobian matrices, reducing the complexity for vehicular communications. An extensive number of simulations is conducted to show the superiority of our proposed channel estimation method and beam tracking algorithm in comparison with the existing algorithms and models. Our simulations suggest that the RAF algorithm can achieve the desired PEE, while on average, reducing the feedback overhead by 75.5% and the total channel estimation time by 14%. The beam tracking algorithm is also shown to significantly improve beam tracking performance, allowing more room for data transmission.
