Among various promising candidate technologies for the sixth-generation (6G) wireless communications, recent advances in microwave metasurfaces have sparked a new research area of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). By controllably reprogramming the wireless propagation channel, RISs are envisioned to achieve low-cost wireless capacity boosting, coverage extension, and enhanced energy efficiency. To reprogram the channel, each meta-atom on RIS needs an external control signal, which is usually generated by base station (BS). However, BS-controlled RISs require complicated control cables, which hamper their massive deployments. Here, we eliminate the need for BS control by proposing a self-controlled RIS (SC-RIS), which is inspired by the optical holography principle. Different from the existing BS-controlled RISs, each meta-atom of SC-RIS is integrated with an additional power detector for holographic recording. By applying the classical Fourier-transform processing to the measured hologram, SC-RIS is capable of retrieving the user's channel state information required for beamforming, thus enabling autonomous RIS beamforming without control cables. Owing to this WiFi-like plug-and-play capability without the BS control, SC-RISs are expected to enable easy and massive deployments in the future 6G systems.

In wireless communications, electromagnetic theory and information theory constitute a pair of fundamental theories, bridged by antenna theory and wireless propagation channel modeling theory. Up to the fifth generation (5G) wireless communication networks, these four theories have been develo** relatively independently. However, in sixth generation (6G) space-air-ground-sea wireless communication networks, seamless coverage is expected in the three-dimensional (3D) space, potentially necessitating the acquisition of channel state information (CSI) and channel capacity calculation at anywhere and any time. Additionally, the key 6G technologies such as ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and holographic MIMO achieves intricate interaction of the antennas and wireless propagation environments, which necessitates the joint modeling of antennas and wireless propagation channels. To address the challenges in 6G, the integration of the above four theories becomes inevitable, leading to the concept of the so-called electromagnetic information theory (EIT). In this article, a suite of 6G key technologies is highlighted. Then, the concepts and relationships of the four theories are unveiled. Finally, the necessity and benefits of integrating them into the EIT are revealed.

Passive human sensing using wireless signals has attracted increasing attention due to its superiorities of non-contact and robustness in various lighting conditions. However, when multiple human individuals are present, their reflected signals could be intertwined in the time, frequency and spatial domains, making it challenging to separate them. To address this issue, this paper proposes a novel system for multiperson detection and monitoring of vital signs (i.e., respiration and heartbeat) with the assistance of space-time-coding (STC) reconfigurable intelligent metasurfaces (RISs). Specifically, the proposed system scans the area of interest (AoI) for human detection by using the harmonic beams generated by the STC RIS. Simultaneously, frequencyorthogonal beams are assigned to each detected person for accurate estimation of their respiration rate (RR) and heartbeat rate (HR). Furthermore, to efficiently extract the respiration signal and the much weaker heartbeat signal, we propose an improved variational mode decomposition (VMD) algorithm to accurately decompose the complex reflected signals into a smaller number of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). We build a prototype to validate the proposed multiperson detection and vital-sign monitoring system. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system can simultaneously monitor the vital signs of up to four persons. The errors of RR and HR estimation using the improved VMD algorithm are below 1 RPM (respiration per minute) and 5 BPM (beats per minute), respectively. Further analysis reveals that the flexible beam controlling mechanism empowered by the STC RIS can reduce the noise reflected from other irrelative objects on the physical layer, and improve the signal-to-noise ratio of echoes from the human chest.

Electromagnetic information theory (EIT) is an emerging interdisciplinary subject that integrates classical Maxwell electromagnetics and Shannon information theory. The goal of EIT is to uncover the information transmission mechanisms from an electromagnetic (EM) perspective in wireless systems. Existing works on EIT are mainly focused on the analysis of EM channel characteristics, degrees-of-freedom, and system capacity. However, these works do not clarify whether EIT can improve wireless communication systems. To fill in this gap, in this paper, we provide a novel example that EIT can improve the performance of classical minimum mean squared error (MMSE) channel estimators by replacing the channel covariance matrix with an EM correlation function (EMCF). Specifically, by averaging the solutions of Maxwell's equations over a tunable angular distribution, we obtain a spatio-temporal correlation function (STCF) of the EM channel, which we name as the EMCF. Since classical MMSE estimators can exploit prior information contained in the channel covariance matrix, the substitution of EMCF for the covariance matrix introduces EM side information into MMSE estimators. Furthermore, we dynamically tune the EMCF parameters to better fit the channel observations. Simulation results show that the proposed EIT-MMSE channel estimator outperforms traditional MMSE estimators, thus proving that EIT is beneficial to wireless communication systems.

Achieving integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) via uplink transmission is challenging due to the unknown waveform and the coupling of communication and sensing echoes. In this paper, a joint uplink communication and imaging system is proposed for the first time, where a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is used to manipulate the electromagnetic signals for echo decoupling at the base station (BS). Aiming to enhance the transmission gain in desired directions and generate required radiation pattern in the region of interest (RoI), a phase optimization problem for RIS is formulated, which is high dimensional and nonconvex with discrete constraints. To tackle this problem, a back propagation based phase design scheme for both continuous and discrete phase models is developed. Moreover, the echo decoupling problem is tackled using the Bayesian method with the factor graph technique, where the problem is represented by a graph model which consists of difficult local functions. Based on the graph model, a message-passing algorithm is derived, which can efficiently cooperate with the adaptive sparse Bayesian learning (SBL) to achieve joint communication and imaging. Numerical results show that the proposed method approaches the relevant lower bound asymptotically, and the communication performance can be enhanced with the utilization of imaging echoes.

The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has received a lot of interest because of its capacity to reconfigure the wireless communication environment in a cost- and energy-efficient way. However, the realistic power consumption modeling and measurement validation of RIS has received far too little attention. Therefore, in this work, we model the power consumption of RIS and conduct measurement validations using various RISs to fill this vacancy. Firstly, we propose a practical power consumption model of RIS. The RIS hardware is divided into three basic parts: the FPGA control board, the drive circuits, and the RIS unit cells. The power consumption of the first two parts is modeled as $P_{\text {static}}$ and that of the last part is modeled as $P_{\text {units}}$. Expressions of $P_{\text {static}}$ and $P_{\text {units}}$ vary amongst different types of RISs. Secondly, we conduct measurements on various RISs to validate the proposed model. Five different RISs including the PIN diode, varactor diode, and RF switch types are measured, and measurement results validate the generality and applicability of the proposed power consumption model of RIS. Finally, we summarize the measurement results and discuss the approaches to achieve the low-power-consumption design of RIS-assisted wireless communication systems.

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are envisioned as a potentially transformative technology for future wireless communications. However, RISs' inability to process signals and the attendant increased channel dimension have brought new challenges to RIS-assisted systems, including significantly increased pilot overhead required for channel estimation. To address these problems, several prior contributions that enhance the hardware architecture of RISs or develop algorithms to exploit the channels' mathematical properties have been made, where the required pilot overhead is reduced to be proportional to the number of RIS elements. In this paper, we propose a dimension-independent channel state information (CSI) acquisition approach in which the required pilot overhead is independent of the number of RIS elements. Specifically, in contrast to traditional signal transmission methods, where signals from the base station (BS) and the users are transmitted in different time slots, we propose a novel method in which signals are transmitted from the BS and the user simultaneously during CSI acquisition. With this method, an electromagnetic interference random field (IRF) will be induced on the RIS, and we propose the structure of sensing RIS to capture its features. Moreover, we develop three algorithms for parameter estimation in this system, in which one of the proposed vM-EM algorithm is analyzed with the fixed-point perturbation method to obtain an asymptotic achievable bound. In addition, we also derive the Cramér-Rao lower bound (CRLB) and an asymptotic expression for characterizing the best possible performance of the proposed algorithms. Simulation results verify that our proposed signal transmission method and the corresponding algorithms can achieve dimension-independent CSI acquisition for beamforming.

Here, we report a compact and wireless sensor within a printed circuit board size of 18 mm * 12 mm, tracking the resonance frequency shift of a microwave plasmonic resonator via a software-defined scheme. The microwave plasmonic resonator yields a deep-subwavelength size, enhanced sensitivity, and a good electromagnetic compatibility performance. The software-defined resonance tracking scheme minimalizes the hardware circuit and the consumed spectrum resources, and makes the detection intelligently adaptive to the target resonance, with a signal-to-noise ratio of 69 dB and a data rate of 2272 measuring points per second. This work explores the potential for reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) deployment to mitigate non-line of sight effects in indoor wireless communications. In a single transmitter, single receiver non-line of sight link, received power improvement of as much as 40 dB is shown to be achievable by suitable placement of a RIS, with an instantaneous bandwidth of at least 100 MHz possible over a 3 to 4.5 GHz range. A reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is capable of manipulating electromagnetic waves with its flexibly configurable unit cells, thus is an appealing technology to resist fast fading caused by multi-path in wireless communications. In this paper, a two-path propagation model for RIS-assisted wireless communications is proposed by considering both the direct path from the transmitter to the receiver and the assisted path provided by the RIS. The proposed propagation model unveils that the phase shifts of RISs can be optimized by appropriate configuration for multi-path fading mitigation. In particular, four types of RISs with different configuration capabilities are introduced and their performances on improving received signal power in virtue of the assisted path to resist fast fading are compared through extensive simulation results. In addition, an RIS operating at 35 GHz is used for experimental measurement. The experimental results verify that an RIS has the ability to combat fast fading and thus improves the receiving performance, which may lay a foundation for further researches.

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) provide an interface between the electromagnetic world of wireless propagation environments and the digital world of information science. Simple yet sufficiently accurate path loss models for RISs are an important basis for theoretical analysis and optimization of RIS-assisted wireless communication systems. In this paper, we refine our previously proposed free-space path loss model for RISs to make it simpler, more applicable, and easier to use. The impact of the antenna's directivity of the transmitter, receiver, and the unit cells of the RIS on the path loss is explicitly formulated as an angle-dependent loss factor. The refined model gives more accurate estimates of the path loss of RISs comprised of unit cells with a deep sub-wavelength size. Based on the proposed model, the properties of a single unit cell are evaluated in terms of scattering performance, power consumption, and area, which allows us to unveil fundamental considerations for deploying RISs in high frequency bands. Two fabricated RISs operating in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) band are utilized to carry out a measurement campaign. The measurement results are shown to be in good agreement with the proposed path loss model. In addition, the experimental results suggest an effective form to characterize the power radiation pattern of the unit cell for path loss modeling.

The existing phase shifter models adopted for reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have ignored the electromagnetic (EM) waves propagation behavior, thus cannot reveal practical effects of RIS on wireless communication systems. Based on the equivalent circuit, this paper introduces an angle-dependent phase shifter model for varactor-based RISs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first phase shifter model which reveals that the incident angle of EM waves has influence on the reflection coefficient of RIS. In addition, the angle-reciprocity on RIS is investigated and further proved to be tenable when the reflection phase difference of adjacent RIS unit cells is invariant for an im**ing EM wave and its reverse incident one. The angle-dependent characteristic of RIS is verified through full-wave simulation. According to our analysis and the simulation results, we find that the angle-reciprocity of varactor-based RIS only holds under small incident angles of both forward and reverse incident EM waves, thus limits the channel reciprocity in RIS-assisted TDD systems.

Electromagnetic (EM) sensing is a wide-spread contactless examination technique in science, engineering and military. However, conventional sensing systems are mostly lack of intelligence, which not only require expensive hardware and complicated computational algorithms, but also pose important challenges for advanced in-situ sensing. To address this shortcoming, we propose the concept of intelligent sensing by designing a programmable metasurface for data-driven learnable data acquisition, and integrating it into a data-driven learnable data processing pipeline. This strategy allows to learn an optimal sensing chain in systematic sense of variational autoencoder, i.e., to jointly learn an optimal measurement strategy along with matching data post processing schemes. A three-port deep artificial neural network (ANN) is designed to characterize the measurement process, such that an optimal measurement strategy is adaptive to the subject of interest by controlling the programmable metasurface for manipulating the EM illuminations. We design and fabricate a proof-of-principle sensing system in microwave, and demonstrate experimentally its significance on the high-quality imaging and high-accuracy object recognition from a remarkably reduced number of measurements. We faithfully expect that the presented methodology will provide us with a fundamentally new perspective on the design of intelligent sensing architectures at various frequencies, and beyond.

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) comprised of tunable unit cells have recently drawn significant attention due to their superior capability in manipulating electromagnetic waves. In particular, RIS-assisted wireless communications have the great potential to achieve significant performance improvement and coverage enhancement in a cost-effective and energy-efficient manner, by properly programming the reflection coefficients of the unit cells of RISs. In this paper, free-space path loss models for RIS-assisted wireless communications are developed for different scenarios by studying the physics and electromagnetic nature of RISs. The proposed models, which are first validated through extensive simulation results, reveal the relationships between the free-space path loss of RIS-assisted wireless communications and the distances from the transmitter/receiver to the RIS, the size of the RIS, the near-field/far-field effects of the RIS, and the radiation patterns of antennas and unit cells. In addition, three fabricated RISs (metasurfaces) are utilized to further corroborate the theoretical findings through experimental measurements conducted in a microwave anechoic chamber. The measurement results match well with the modeling results, thus validating the proposed free-space path loss models for RIS, which may pave the way for further theoretical studies and practical applications in this field.

It is ever-increasingly demanded to remotely monitor people in daily life using radio-frequency probing signals. However, conventional systems can hardly be deployed in real-world settings since they typically require objects to either deliberately cooperate or carry a wireless active device or identification tag. To accomplish the complicated successive tasks using a single device in real time, we propose a smart metasurface imager and recognizer simultaneously, empowered by a network of artificial neural networks (ANNs) for adaptively controlling data flow. Here, three ANNs are employed in an integrated hierarchy: transforming measured microwave data into images of whole human body; classifying the specifically designated spots (hand and chest) within the whole image; and recognizing human hand signs instantly at Wi-Fi frequency of 2.4 GHz. Instantaneous in-situ imaging of full scene and adaptive recognition of hand signs and vital signs of multiple non-cooperative people have been experimentally demonstrated. We also show that the proposed intelligent metasurface system work well even when it is passively excited by stray Wi-Fi signals that ubiquitously exist in our daily lives. The reported strategy could open a new avenue for future smart cities, smart homes, human-device interactive interfaces, healthy monitoring, and safety screening free of visual privacy issues.

Many emerging technologies, such as ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output (UM-MIMO), terahertz (THz) communications are under active discussion as promising technologies to support the extremely high access rate and superior network capacity in the future sixth-generation (6G) mobile communication systems. However, such technologies are still facing many challenges for practical implementation. In particular, UM-MIMO and THz communication require extremely large number of radio frequency (RF) chains, and hence suffering from prohibitive hardware cost and complexity. In this article, we introduce a new paradigm to address the above issues, namely wireless communication enabled by programmable metasurfaces, by exploiting the powerful capability of metasurfaces in manipulating electromagnetic waves. We will first introduce the basic concept of programmable metasurfaces, followed by the promising paradigm shift in future wireless communication systems enabled by programmable metasurfaces. In particular, we propose two prospective paradigms of applying programmable metasurfaces in wireless transceivers: namely RF chain-free transmitter and space-down-conversion receiver, which both have great potential to simplify the architecture and reduce the hardware cost of future wireless transceivers. Furthermore, we present the design architectures, preliminary experimental results and main advantages of these new paradigms and discuss their potential opportunities and challenges toward ultra-massive 6G communications with low hardware complexity, low cost, and high energy efficiency.

In this letter, a wireless transmitter using the new architecture of programmable metasurface is presented. The proposed transmitter does not require any filter, nor wideband mixer or wideband power amplifier, thereby making it a promising hardware architecture for cost-effective wireless communications systems in the future. Using experimental results, we demonstrate that a programmable metasurface-based 8-phase shift-keying (8PSK) transmitter with 8*32 phase adjustable unit cells can achieve 6.144 Mbps data rate over the air at 4.25 GHz with a comparable bit error rate (BER) performance as the conventional approach without channel coding, but with less hardware complexity.

Metasurfaces have drawn significant attentions due to their superior capability in tailoring electromagnetic waves with a wide frequency range, from microwave to visible light. Recently, programmable metasurfaces have demonstrated the ability of manipulating the amplitude or phase of electromagnetic waves in a programmable manner in real time, which renders them especially appealing in the applications of wireless communications. To practically demonstrate the feasibility of programmable metasurfaces in future communication systems, in this paper, we design and realize a novel metasurface-based wireless communication system. By exploiting the dynamically controllable property of programmable metasurface, we firstly introduce the fundamental principle of the metasurface-based wireless communication system design. We then present the design, implementation and experimental evaluation of the proposed metasurface-based wireless communication system with a prototype, which realizes single carrier quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) transmission over the air. In the developed prototype, the phase of the reflected electromagnetic wave of programmable metasurface is directly manipulated in real time according to the baseband control signal, which achieves 2.048 Mbps data transfer rate with video streaming transmission over the air. Experimental result is provided to compare the performance of the proposed metasurface-based architecture against the conventional one. With the slight increase of the transmit power by 5 dB, the same bit error rate (BER) performance can be achieved as the conventional system in the absence of channel coding. Such a result is encouraging considering that the metasurface-based system has the advantages of low hardware cost and simple structure, thus leading to a promising new architecture for wireless communications.
