Abstract:
Current-steering (CS) digital-to-analog converters (DACs) generate analog signals by combining weighted current sources. Ideally, the current sources are combined at each switching instant simultaneously. However, this is not true in practice due to timing mismatch, resulting in nonlinear distortion. This work uses the equivalent timing error model, introduced by previous work, to analyze the sign…

Current-steering (CS) digital-to-analog converters (DACs) generate analog signals by combining weighted current sources. Ideally, the current sources are combined at each switching instant simultaneously. However, this is not true in practice due to timing mismatch, resulting in nonlinear distortion. This work uses the equivalent timing error model, introduced by previous work, to analyze the signal-to-distortion ratio (SDR) resulting from these timing errors. Using a behavioral simulation model we demonstrate that our analysis is significantly more accurate than the previous methods. We also use our simulation model to investigate the effect of timing mismatch in partially-segmented CS-DACs, i.e., those comprised of both equally-weighted and binary-weighted current sources.

Linearization for High-Speed Current-Steering DACs Using Neural Networks
Authors:
Daniel Beauchamp,
Keith M. Chugg
Abstract:
This paper proposes a novel foreground linearization scheme for a high-speed CS-DAC. The technique leverages neural networks (NNs) to derive a LUT that maps the inverse of the DAC transfer characteristic onto the input codes. The algorithm is shown to improve conventional methods by at least 6dB in terms of intermodulation (IM) performance for frequencies up to 9GHz on a state-of-the-art 10-bit CS…

In this paper, we propose a novel image calibration algorithm for a twofold time-interleaved DAC (TIDAC). The algorithm is based on simulated annealing, which is often used in the field of machine learning to solve derivative free optimization (DFO) problems. The DAC under consideration is part of a digital transceiver core that contains a high speed ADC, microcontroller, and digital control via a serial peripheral interface (SPI). These are used as tools for designing an algorithm which suppresses the interleave image to the noise floor. The algorithm is supported with experimental results in silicon on a 10-bit twofold TIDAC operating at a sample rate of 50 GS/s in 14nm CMOS technology.
