Digital twins have become popular for their ability to monitor and optimize a process or a machine, ideally through its complete life cycle using simulations and sensor data. In this paper, we focus on the challenge of accurate and real-time simulations for digital twins in the context of electrical machines. To build such a digital twin involves not only computational models for the electromagnetic aspects, but also mechanical and thermal effects need to be taken into account. We address mathematical tools that can be employed to carry out the required simulations based on physical laws as well as surrogate or data-driven models. One of those tools is a model hierarchy of very fine to very coarse models as well as reduced order models for obtaining real-time simulations. The required software tools to carry out simulations in the digital twin are also discussed. The simulation models are implemented in a pipeline that allows for the automatic modeling of new machines and the automatic configuration of new digital twins. Finally, the overall implemented digital twin is tested and implemented in a physical demonstrator.

Mathematical models are essential to analyze and understand the dynamics of complex systems. Recently, data-driven methodologies have got a lot of attention which is leveraged by advancements in sensor technology. However, the quality of obtained data plays a vital role in learning a good and reliable model. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an efficient heuristic methodology to collect data both in the frequency domain and time-domain, aiming at the best possible information gain from limited experimental data. The efficiency of the proposed methodology is illustrated by means of several examples, and also, its robustness in the presence of noisy data is shown.

Port-Hamiltonian systems have gained a lot of attention in recent years due to their inherent valuable properties in modeling and control. In this paper, we are interested in constructing linear port-Hamiltonian systems from time-domain input-output data. We discuss a non-intrusive methodology that is comprised of two main ingredients -- (a) inferring frequency response data from time-domain data and (b) constructing an underlying port-Hamiltonian realization using the inferred frequency response data. We illustrate the proposed methodology by means of two numerical examples and also compare it with two other system identification methods to infer the frequency response from the input-output data.

Model order reduction is the approximation of dynamical systems into equivalent systems with smaller order. Model reduction has been studied extensively for different types of systems. In this paper, we present two methods for multi input multi output linear systems. These methods are based on solvents, also called block poles. These methods are particularly suitable if the given system is in matrix transfer function form. The first method eliminates solvents one by one whereas, the second method can eliminate multiple solvents at the same time. The two presented methods are implemented in MATLAB in order to provide a systematic method for the model order reduction of MIMO linear systems.
