In this paper, we study efficient multi-beam training design for near-field communications to reduce the beam training overhead of conventional single-beam training methods. In particular, the array-division based multi-beam training method, which is widely used in far-field communications, cannot be directly applied to the near-field scenario, since different sub-arrays may observe different user angles and there exist coverage holes in the angular domain. To address these issues, we first devise a new near-field multi-beam codebook by sparsely activating a portion of antennas to form a sparse linear array (SLA), hence generating multiple beams simultaneously by effective exploiting the near-field grating-lobs. Next, a two-stage near-field beam training method is proposed, for which several candidate user locations are identified firstly based on multi-beam swee** over time, followed by the second stage to further determine the true user location with a small number of single-beam swee**. Finally, numerical results show that our proposed multi-beam training method significantly reduces the beam training overhead of conventional single-beam training methods, yet achieving comparable rate performance in data transmission.

Free-space optical (FSO) communication is a promising solution to support wireless backhaul links in emerging 6G non-terrestrial networks. At the link level, pointing errors in FSO links can significantly impact capacity, making accurate modeling of these errors essential for both assessing and enhancing communication performance. In this paper, we introduce a novel model for FSO pointing errors in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that incorporates three-dimensional (3D) jitter, including roll, pitch, and yaw angle jittering. We derive a probability density function for the pointing error angle based on the relative position and posture of the UAV to the ground station. This model is then integrated into a trajectory optimization problem designed to maximize energy efficiency while meeting constraints on speed, acceleration, and elevation angle. Our proposed optimization method significantly improves energy efficiency by adjusting the UAV's flight trajectory to minimize exposure to directions highly affected by jitter. The simulation results emphasize the importance of using UAV-specific 3D jitter models in achieving accurate performance measurements and effective system optimization in FSO communication networks. Utilizing our generalized model, the optimized trajectories achieve up to 11.8 percent higher energy efficiency compared to those derived from conventional Gaussian pointing error models.

This paper investigates the optimization of the long-standing probabilistically robust transmit beamforming problem with channel uncertainties in the multiuser multiple-input single-output (MISO) downlink transmission. This problem poses significant analytical and computational challenges. Currently, the state-of-the-art optimization method relies on convex restrictions as tractable approximations to ensure robustness against Gaussian channel uncertainties. However, this method not only exhibits high computational complexity and suffers from the rank relaxation issue but also yields conservative solutions. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised deep learning-based approach that incorporates the sampling of channel uncertainties in the training process to optimize the probabilistic system performance. We introduce a model-driven learning approach that defines a new beamforming structure with trainable parameters to account for channel uncertainties. Additionally, we employ a graph neural network to efficiently infer the key beamforming parameters. We successfully apply this approach to the minimum rate quantile maximization problem subject to outage and total power constraints. Furthermore, we propose a bisection search method to address the more challenging power minimization problem with probabilistic rate constraints by leveraging the aforementioned approach. Numerical results confirm that our approach achieves non-conservative robust performance, higher data rates, greater power efficiency, and faster execution compared to state-of-the-art optimization methods.

Fluid antenna system (FAS) has recently surfaced as a promising technology for the upcoming sixth generation (6G) wireless networks. Unlike traditional antenna system (TAS) with fixed antenna location, FAS introduces a flexible component where the radiating element can switch its position within a predefined space. This capability allows FAS to achieve additional diversity and multiplexing gains. Nevertheless, to fully reap the benefits of FAS, obtaining channel state information (CSI) over the predefined space is crucial. In this paper, we explore the interaction between a transmitter equipped with a traditional antenna and a receiver with a fluid antenna over an electromagnetic-compliant channel model. We address the challenges of channel estimation and reconstruction using Nyquist sampling and maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) methods. Our analysis reveals a fundamental tradeoff between the accuracy of the reconstructed channel and the number of estimated channels, indicating that half-wavelength sampling is insufficient for perfect reconstruction and that oversampling is essential to enhance accuracy. Despite its advantages, oversampling can introduce practical challenges. Consequently, we propose a suboptimal sampling distance that facilitates efficient channel reconstruction. In addition, we employ the MLE method to bound the channel estimation error by $ε$, with a specific confidence interval (CI). Our findings enable us to determine the minimum number of estimated channels and the total number of pilot symbols required for efficient channel reconstruction in a given space. Lastly, we investigate the rate performance of FAS and TAS and demonstrate that FAS with imperfect CSI can outperform TAS with perfect CSI.

This paper investigates the performance of physical layer security (PLS) in fluid antenna-aided communication systems under arbitrary correlated fading channels. In particular, it is considered that a single fixed-antenna transmitter aims to send confidential information to a legitimate receiver equipped with a planar fluid antenna system (FAS), while an eavesdropper, also taking advantage of a planar FAS, attempts to decode the desired message. For this scenario, we first present analytical expressions of the equivalent channel distributions at the legitimate user and eavesdropper by using copula, so that the obtained analytical results are valid for any arbitrarily correlated fading distributions. Then, with the help of Gauss-Laguerre quadrature, we derive compact analytical expressions for the average secrecy capacity (ASC), the secrecy outage probability (SOP), and the secrecy energy efficiency (SEE) for the FAS wiretap channel. Moreover, for exemplary purposes, we also obtain the compact expression of ASC, SOP, and SEE by utilizing the Gaussian copula under correlated Rayleigh fading channels as a special case. Eventually, numerical results indicate that applying the fluid antenna with only one active port to PLS can guarantee more secure and reliable transmission, when compared to traditional antenna systems (TAS) exploiting maximal ratio combining (MRC).

Full-duplex (FD) technology is gaining popularity for integration into a wide range of wireless networks due to its demonstrated potential in recent studies. In contrast to half-duplex (HD) technology, the implementation of FD in networks necessitates considering inter-node interference (INI) from various network perspectives. When deploying FD technology in networks, several critical factors must be taken into account. These include self-interference (SI) and the requisite SI cancellation (SIC) processes, as well as the selection of multiple user equipment (UE) per time slot. Additionally, inter-node interference (INI), including cross-link interference (CLI) and inter-cell interference (ICI), become crucial issues during concurrent uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) transmission and reception, similar to SI. Since most INI is challenging to eliminate, a comprehensive investigation that covers radio resource control (RRC), medium access control (MAC), and the physical layer (PHY) is essential in the context of FD network design, rather than focusing on individual network layers and types. This paper covers state-of-the-art studies, including protocols and documents from 3GPP for FD, MAC protocol, user scheduling, and CLI handling. The methods are also compared through a network-level system simulation based on 3D ray-tracing.

The next-generation MIMO technology is now being developed to cater to the new data traffic and performance expectations generated by new user devices and services in the next decade. The evolution towards "ultra-massive MIMO (UM-MIMO)" is not only about adding more antennas but will also uncover new propagation and hardware phenomena that can only be treated by jointly utilizing insights from the communication, electromagnetic (EM), and circuit theory areas. This article offers a comprehensive overview of the key benefits of the UM-MIMO technology and the associated challenges. It explores massive multiplexing facilitated by radiative near-field effects, characterizes the spatial degrees-of-freedom, and practical channel estimation schemes tailored for massive arrays. Moreover, we provide a tutorial on EM theory and circuit theory, and how it is used to obtain physically consistent antenna and channel models. Subsequently, the article describes different ways to implement massive and dense antenna arrays, and how to co-design antennas with signal processing. This letter investigates the challenge of channel estimation in a multiuser millimeter-wave (mmWave) time-division duplexing (TDD) system. In this system, the base station (BS) employs a multi-antenna uniform linear array (ULA), while each mobile user is equipped with a fluid antenna system (FAS). Accurate channel state information (CSI) plays a crucial role in the precise placement of antennas in FAS. Traditional channel estimation methods designed for fixed-antenna systems are inadequate due to the high dimensionality of FAS. To address this issue, we propose a low-sample-size sparse channel reconstruction (L3SCR) method, capitalizing on the sparse propagation paths characteristic of mmWave channels. In this approach, each fluid antenna only needs to switch and measure the channel at a few specific locations. By observing this reduced-dimensional data, we can effectively extract angular and gain information related to the sparse channel, enabling us to reconstruct the full CSI. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed method allows us to obtain precise CSI with minimal hardware switching and pilot overhead. As a result, the system sum-rate approaches the upper bound achievable with perfect CSI.

Different from conventional reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), a recent innovation called simultaneous transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) has emerged, aimed at achieving complete 360-degree coverage in communication networks. Additionally, fullduplex (FD) technology is recognized as a potent approach for enhancing spectral efficiency by enabling simultaneous transmission and reception within the same time and frequency resources. In this study, we investigate the performance of a STAR-RIS-assisted FD communication system. The STAR-RIS is strategically placed at the cell-edge to facilitate communication for users located in this challenging region, while cell-center users can communicate directly with the FD base station (BS). We employ a non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) pairing scheme and account for system impairments, such as self-interference at the BS and imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC). We derive closed-form expressions for the ergodic rates in both the up-link and down-link communications and extend our analysis to bidirectional communication between cell-center and cell-edge users. Furthermore, we formulate an optimization problem aimed at maximizing the ergodic sum-rate. This optimization involves adjusting the amplitudes and phase-shifts of the STAR-RIS elements and allocating total transmit power efficiently. In particular, we consider a K-user dirty multiple access channel (DMAC) with non-causally known SI at the transmitters, where K users send independent messages to a common receiver with a FA capable of changing its location depending on the channel condition. By connecting Jakes' model to copula theory through Spearman's ρ rank correlation coefficient, we accurately describe the spatial correlation between the FA channels, and derive a closed-form expression for the outage probability (OP) under Fisher-Snedecor F fading. Numerical results illustrate how considering FA can improve the performance of multiuser communication systems in terms of the OP and also support a large number of users using only one FA at the common receiver in a few wavelengths of space.

This paper investigates the performance of a singleuser fluid antenna system (FAS), by exploiting a class of elliptical copulas to describe the structure of dependency amongst the fluid antenna ports. By expressing Jakes' model in terms of the Gaussian copula, we consider two cases: (i) the general case, i.e., any arbitrary correlated fading distribution; and (ii) the specific case, i.e., correlated Nakagami-m fading. For both scenarios, we first derive analytical expressions for the cumulative distribution function (CDF) and probability density function (PDF) of the equivalent channel in terms of multivariate normal distribution. Then, we obtain the outage probability (OP) and the delay outage rate (DOR) to analyze the performance of the FAS. By employing the popular rank correlation coefficients such as Spearman's \{rho} and Kendall's τ, we measure the degree of dependency in correlated arbitrary fading channels and illustrate how the Gaussian copula can be accurately connected to Jakes' model in FAS without complicated mathematical analysis. Numerical results show that increasing the fluid antenna size provides lower OP and DOR, but the system performance saturates as the number of antenna ports increases. In addition, our results indicate that FAS provides better performance compared to conventional single-fixed antenna systems even when the size of fluid antenna is small.

Therefore, this paper derives the theoretical limits of estimation for the position and orientation of vehicles in a cooperative vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) scenario, using a lens-based multiple-input multiple-output (lens-MIMO) system. Following this, we analyze the Cram$\acute{\text{e}}$r-Rao lower bounds (CRLBs) of the position and orientation estimation and explore a received signal model of a lens-MIMO for the particular angle of arrival (AoA) estimation with a V2V geometric model. Further, we propose a lower complexity AoA estimation technique exploiting the unique characteristics of the lens-MIMO for a single target vehicle; as a result, its estimation scheme is effectively extended by the successive interference cancellation (SIC) method for multiple target vehicles. Given these AoAs, we investigate the lens-MIMO estimation capability for the positions and orientations of vehicles. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) as a smart reflector is revolutionizing research for next-generation wireless communications. Complementing this is a concept of using RIS as an efficient propagation medium for potentially superior path loss characteristics. Motivated by a recent porous surface architecture that facilitates reconfigurable pathways with cavities filled with fluid metal, this paper studies the propagation characteristics of different pathway configurations in different lossy materials on the reconfigurable surface wave platform by using a commercial full electromagnetic simulation software and S-parameters experiments. This paper also looks into the best scheme to switch between a straight pathway and a $90^\circ$-bend and attempts to quantify the additional path loss when making a turn. Our experimental results verify the simulation results, showing the effectiveness of the proposed reconfigurable surface wave platform for a wide-band, low path loss and highly programmable communications.

The use of in-band full-duplex (FD) enables nodes to simultaneously transmit and receive on the same frequency band, which challenges the traditional assumption in wireless network design. The full-duplex capability enhances spectral efficiency and decreases latency, which are two key drivers pushing the performance expectations of next-generation mobile networks. In less than ten years, in-band FD has advanced from being demonstrated in research labs to being implemented in standards, presenting new opportunities to utilize its foundational concepts. Some of the most significant opportunities include using FD to enable wireless networks to sense the physical environment, integrate sensing and communication applications, develop integrated access and backhaul solutions, and work with smart signal propagation environments powered by reconfigurable intelligent surfaces. However, these new opportunities also come with new challenges for large-scale commercial deployment of FD technology, such as managing self-interference, combating cross-link interference in multi-cell networks, and coexistence of dynamic time division duplex, subband FD and FD networks.

In this correspondence, we propose a diversity-achieving retroreflector-based fine tracking system for free-space optical (FSO) communications. We show that multiple retroreflectors deployed around the communication telescope at the aerial vehicle save the payload capacity and enhance the outage performance of the fine tracking system. Through the analysis of the joint-pointing loss of the multiple retroreflectors, we derive the ordered moments of the received power. Our analysis can be further utilized for studies on multiple input multiple output (MIMO)-FSO. After the moment-based estimation of the received power distribution, we numerically analyze the outage performance. The greatest challenge of retroreflector-based FSO communication is a significant decrease in power. Still, our selected numerical results show that, from an outage perspective, the proposed method can surpass conventional methods.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been recognized as a promising technique for the sixth generation (6G) of mobile communication networks. The key feature of RIS is to reconfigure the propagation environment via smart signal reflections. In addition, active RIS schemes have been recently proposed to overcome the deep path loss attenuation inherent in the RIS-aided communication systems. Accordingly, this paper considers the secrecy performance of up-link RIS-aided multiple users multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) communication systems, in the presence of multiple passive eavesdroppers. In contrast to the existing works, we investigate the impact of the RIS phase shift errors on the secrecy performance. Taking into account the complex environment, where a general Rician channel model is adopted for all the communication links, closed-form approximate expressions for the ergodic secrecy rate are derived for three RIS configurations, namely, i) passive RIS, ii) active RIS, iii) active RIS with energy harvesting (EH RIS). Then, based on the derived expressions, we optimize the phase shifts at the RIS to enhance the system performance. In addition, the best RIS configuration selection is considered for a given target secrecy rate and amount of the power available at the users. Finally, Monte-Carlo simulations are provided to verify the accuracy of the analysis, and the impact of different system parameters on the secrecy performance is investigated. The results in this paper show that, an active RIS scheme can be implemented to enhance the secrecy performance of RIS-aided communication systems with phase shift errors, especially when the users have limited transmission power.

In this paper, we investigate the Internet of Bio-Nano Things (IoBNT) which relates to networks formed by molecular communications. By providing a means of communication through the ubiquitously connected blood vessels (arteries, veins, and capillaries), molecular communication-based IoBNT enables a host of new eHealth applications. For example, an organ monitoring sensor can transfer internal body signals through the IoBNT for health monitoring applications. We empirically show that blood vessel channels introduce a new set of challenges for the design of molecular communication systems in comparison to free-space channels. We then propose cylindrical duct channel models and discuss the corresponding system designs conforming to the channel characteristics. Furthermore, based on prototype implementations, we confirm that molecular communication techniques can be utilized for composing the IoBNT. We believe that the promising results presented in this work, together with the rich research challenges that lie ahead, are strong indicators that IoBNT with molecular communications can drive novel applications for emerging eHealth systems.

Numerous researchers have studied innovations in future sixth-generation (6G) wireless communications. Indeed, a critical issue that has emerged is to contend with society's insatiable demand for high data rates and massive 6G connectivity. Some scholars consider one innovation to be a breakthrough--the application of free-space optical (FSO) communication. Owing to its exceedingly high carrier frequency/bandwidth and the potential of the unlicensed spectrum domain, FSO communication provides an excellent opportunity to develop ultrafast data links that can be applied in a variety of 6G applications, including heterogeneous networks with enormous connectivity and wireless backhauls for cellular systems. In this study, we perform video signal transmissions via an FPGA-based FSO communication prototype to investigate the feasibility of an FSO link with a distance of up to 20~km. We use a channel emulator to reliably model turbulence, scintillation, and power attenuation of the long-range FSO channel. We use the FPGA-based real-time SDR prototype to process the transmitted and received video signals. Our study also presents the channel-generation process of a given long-distance FSO link. To enhance the link quality, we apply spatial selective filtering to suppress the background noise generated by sunlight. To measure the misalignment of the transceiver, we use sampling-based pointing, acquisition, and tracking to compensate for it by improving the signal-to-noise ratio. For the main video signal transmission testbed, we consider various environments by changing the amount of turbulence and wind speed. We demonstrate that the testbed even permits the successful transmission of ultra-high-definition (UHD: 3840 x 2160 resolution) 60 fps videos under severe turbulence and high wind speeds.

The recent attempts to realize full-duplex (FD) communications in millimeter wave (mmWave) systems have garnered a significant amount of interest for its potential. In this paper, we present a cost-efficient design of mmWave FD systems, where the system dynamically reduces the RF beam codebook in a computationally efficient manner, so that it is comprised of the RF beams that will prevent the Rx receive chain from saturating due to the self-interference (SI). The analog beamformer will suppress the SI to the level that the residual SI can be completely removed with digital SI cancellation, allowing the digital beamformer to concentrate on the desired channel, free of the SI. To reduce the computation required for the proposed method, we propose two sufficient conditions that prevent the Rx side saturations, which are practically tight. Through performance valuations conducted in realistically modeled mmWave FD scenarios, we demonstrate that the proposed design achieves comparable performance with the ideal FD and other benchmarks with significantly lower costs.

One of the main obstacles in full-duplex radios is analog-to-digital converter (ADC) saturation on a receiver due to the strong self-interference (SI). To solve this issue, researchers have proposed two different types of analog self-interference cancellation (SIC) methods -- i) passive suppression and ii) regeneration-and-subtraction of SI. For the latter case, the tunable RF component, such as a multi-tap circuit, reproduces and subtracts the SI. The resolutions of such RF components constitute the key factor of the analog SIC. Indeed, they are directly related to how well the SI is imitated. Another major issue in analog SIC is the inaccurate estimation of the SI channel due to the nonlinear distortions, which mainly come from the power amplifier (PA). In this paper, we derive a closed-form expression for the SIC performance of the multi-tap circuit; we consider how the RF components must overcome such practical impairments as digitally-controlled attenuators, phase shifters, and PA. For a realistic performance analysis, we exploit the measured PA characteristics and carry out a 3D ray-tracing-based, system-level throughput analysis. Our results confirm that the non-idealities of the RF components significantly affect the analog SIC performance. We believe our study provides insight into the design of the practical full-duplex system.

In this article, we discuss the potential of radio frequency (RF) lens for ultra-wideband millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems. In terms of the beam squint, we compare the proposed RF lens antenna with the phase shifter-based array for hybrid beamforming. To reduce the complexities for fully digital beamforming, researchers have come up with RF lens-based hybrid beamforming. The use of mmWave systems, however, causes an increase in bandwidth, which gives rise to the beam squint phenomenon. We first find the causative factors for beam squint in the dielectric RF lens antenna. Based on the beamforming gain at each frequency, we verify that, in a specific situation, RF lens can be free of the beam squint effect. We use 3D electromagnetic analysis software to numerically interpret the beam squint of each antenna type. Based on the results, we present the degraded spectral efficiency by system-level simulations with 3D indoor ray tracing. Finally, to verify our analysis, we fabricate an actual RF lens antenna and demonstrate the real performance using a mmWave, NI PXIe, software-defined radio system.

It can, however, give rise to major system difficulties concerning alignment between two terminals. During the link-acquisition step (a.k.a. coarse pointing), a ground station can be prevented from acquiring optical links due to pointing errors and insufficient information about unmanned aerial vehicle locations. We propose, in this letter, a radio-frequency (RF) lens antenna array to increase the performance of coarse pointing in hybrid RF/FSO communications. The proposed algorithm using a novel closed-form angle estimator, compared to conventional methods, reduces the minimum outage probability by over a thousand times.

Conventional stereoscopic displays suffer from vergence-accommodation conflict and cause visual fatigue. Integral-imaging-based displays resolve the problem by directly projecting the sub-aperture views of a light field into the eyes using a microlens array or a similar structure. However, such displays have an inherent trade-off between angular and spatial resolutions. In this paper, we propose a novel coded time-division multiplexing technique that projects encoded sub-aperture views to the eyes of a viewer with correct cues for vergence-accommodation reflex. Given sparse light field sub-aperture views, our pipeline can provide a perception of high-resolution refocused images with minimal aliasing by jointly optimizing the sub-aperture views for display and the coded aperture pattern. This is achieved via deep learning in an end-to-end fashion by simulating light transport and image formation with Fourier optics. To our knowledge, this work is among the first that optimize the light field display pipeline with deep learning. We verify our idea with objective image quality metrics (PSNR, SSIM, and LPIPS) and perform an extensive study on various customizable design variables in our display pipeline. Experimental results show that light fields displayed using the proposed technique indeed have higher quality than that of baseline display designs.

In this paper, we propose a novel wireless architecture, mounted on a high-altitude aerial platform, which is enabled by reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). By installing RIS on the aerial platform, rich line-of-sight and full-area coverage can be achieved, thereby, overcoming the limitations of the conventional terrestrial RIS. We consider a scenario where a sudden increase in traffic in an urban area triggers authorities to rapidly deploy unmanned-aerial vehicle base stations (UAV-BSs) to serve the ground users. In this scenario, since the direct backhaul link from the ground source can be blocked due to several obstacles from the urban area, we propose reflecting the backhaul signal using aerial-RIS so that it successfully reaches the UAV-BSs. We jointly optimize the placement and array-partition strategies of aerial-RIS and the phases of RIS elements, which leads to an increase in energy-efficiency of every UAV-BS. We show that the complexity of our algorithm can be bounded by the quadratic order, thus implying high computational efficiency. We verify the performance of the proposed algorithm via extensive numerical evaluations and show that our method achieves an outstanding performance in terms of energy-efficiency compared to benchmark schemes.

Gross tumor volume (GTV) delineation on tomography medical imaging is crucial for radiotherapy planning and cancer diagnosis. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) has been predominated on automatic 3D medical segmentation tasks, including contouring the radiotherapy target given 3D CT volume. While CNNs may provide feasible outcome, in clinical scenario, double-check and prediction refinement by experts is still necessary because of CNNs' inconsistent performance on unexpected patient cases. To provide experts an efficient way to modify the CNN predictions without retrain the model, we propose 3D-fused context propagation, which propagates any edited slice to the whole 3D volume. By considering the high-level feature maps, the radiation oncologists would only required to edit few slices to guide the correction and refine the whole prediction volume. Specifically, we leverage the backpropagation for activation technique to convey the user editing information backwardly to the latent space and generate new prediction based on the updated and original feature. During the interaction, our proposed approach reuses the extant extracted features and does not alter the existing 3D CNN model architectures, avoiding the perturbation on other predictions. The proposed method is evaluated on two published radiotherapy target contouring datasets of nasopharyngeal and esophageal cancer. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method is able to further effectively improve the existing segmentation prediction from different model architectures given oncologists' interactive inputs.

The multi-sensory XR devices introduce several new types of traffic with unique quality-of-service (QoS) requirements, which are usually defined by three measures---human perception, corresponding sensors, and present devices. To fulfil these requirements, cellular-supported wireless connectivity can be a promising solution that can largely benefit the Robot-to-XR and the XR-to-Robot links. Finding, identifying and segmenting suspicious cancer metastasized lymph nodes from 3D multi-modality imaging is a clinical task of paramount importance. In radiotherapy, they are referred to as Lymph Node Gross Tumor Volume (GTVLN). Determining and delineating the spread of GTVLN is essential in defining the corresponding resection and irradiating regions for the downstream workflows of surgical resection and radiotherapy of various cancers. In this work, we propose an effective distance-based gating approach to simulate and simplify the high-level reasoning protocols conducted by radiation oncologists, in a divide-and-conquer manner. GTVLN is divided into two subgroups of tumor-proximal and tumor-distal, respectively, by means of binary or soft distance gating. This is motivated by the observation that each category can have distinct though overlap** distributions of appearance, size and other LN characteristics. A novel multi-branch detection-by-segmentation network is trained with each branch specializing on learning one GTVLN category features, and outputs from multi-branch are fused in inference. The proposed method is evaluated on an in-house dataset of $141$ esophageal cancer patients with both PET and CT imaging modalities. Our results validate significant improvements on the mean recall from $72.5\%$ to $78.2\%$, as compared to previous state-of-the-art work. The highest achieved GTVLN recall of $82.5\%$ at $20\%$ precision is clinically relevant and valuable since human observers tend to have low sensitivity (around $80\%$ for the most experienced radiation oncologists, as reported by literature).

Integrated access and backhaul (IAB) frameworks for 5G new radio (NR) as a cost-effective alternative to the wired backhaul have been investigated by 3GPP. A promising solution for this framework is the integration of full duplex (FD) technologies to enhance the spectral efficiency and make an efficient use of the network resources-termed FD IAB. However, FD IAB presents significant technical challenges, such as self-interference (SI) in the IAB framework, which may cast doubt over the feasibility of FD IAB. In this article, we present a brief tutorial of the FD IAB framework and its enabling technologies. We then numerically evaluate and discuss the link-level SI reduction and the system-level downlink throughput performance of the FD IAB. Finally, we validate the feasibility of FD IAB using 28 GHz hardware prototype measurements of propagation-domain SI suppression. Furthermore, in conventional phase-shift MIMO, beam-squint, a problem caused by the wideband of mmWave communication, is estimated with the fabricated RF lens antenna.

The demand for future wireless communication systems is being satisfied for various circumstances through unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), which act as flying base stations (BSs). In this letter, we propose an ellipse clustering algorithm that maximizes the user coverage probability of UAV- BSs and avoids inter-cell interference with minimal transmit power. We obtain the coverage of each UAV by adjusting its antenna half-power beamwidth, orientation, and 3D location by minimizing the path loss of the cell-edge user. Simulation results confirm that the proposed algorithm achieves high system throughput and coverage probability with lower transmit power compared to conventional algorithms.

This paper presents novel ultrareliable and low-latency communication (URLLC) techniques for URLLC services, such as Tactile Internet services. Among typical use-cases of URLLC services are tele-operation, immersive virtual reality, cooperative automated driving, and so on. In such URLLC services, new kinds of traffic such as haptic information including kinesthetic information and tactile information need to be delivered in addition to high-quality video and audio traffic in traditional multimedia services. Further, such a variety of traffic has various characteristics in terms of packet sizes and data rates with a variety of requirements of latency and reliability. Furthermore, some traffic may occur in a sporadic manner but require reliable delivery of packets of medium to large sizes within a low latency, which is not supported by current state-of-the-art wireless communication systems and is very challenging for future wireless communication systems. Thus, to meet such a variety of tight traffic requirements in a wireless communication system, novel technologies from the physical layer to the network layer need to be devised. In this paper, some novel physical layer technologies such as waveform multiplexing, multiple access scheme, channel code design, synchronization, and full-duplex transmission for spectrally-efficient URLLC are introduced. In addition, a novel performance evaluation approach, which combines a ray-tracing tool and system-level simulation, is suggested for evaluating the performance of the proposed schemes. Simulation results show the feasibility of the proposed schemes providing realistic URLLC services in realistic geographical environments, which encourages further efforts to substantiate the proposed work.

How well the digital cancellation works depends on the results of analog cancellation. Therefore, to analyze overall SIC performance, one should do so in an integrated manner. In this paper, we build a simulator that can analyze the performance of analog and digital SIC techniques. Through this simulator, we can analyze the overall SIC performance within various system parameters such as the resolution of an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and/or nonlinearity of a power amplifier (PA). With our simulator, we expect that configurations and tuning algorithms of an active analog canceller can be optimized before real hardware implementation.

Two new asynchronous modulation techniques for molecular timing (MT) channels are proposed. One based on modulating information on the time between two consecutive releases of indistinguishable information particles, and one based on using distinguishable particles. For comparison, we consider the synchronized modulation scheme where information is encoded in the time of release and decoded from the time of arrival of particles. We show that all three modulation techniques result in a system that can be modeled as an additive noise channel, and we derive the expression for the probability density function of the noise. Next, we focus on binary communication and derive the associated optimal detection rules for each modulation. Since the noise associated with these modulations has an infinite variance, geometric power is used as a measure for the noise power, and we derive an expression for the geometric SNR (G-SNR) for each modulation scheme. Numerical evaluations indicate that for these systems the bit error rate (BER) is constant at a given G-SNR, similar to the relation between BER and SNR in additive Gaussian noise channels. We also demonstrate that the asynchronous modulation based on two distinguishable particles can achieve a BER performance close to the synchronized modulation scheme.

The requirement of high data-rate in the fifth generation wireless systems (5G) calls for the ultimate utilization of the wide bandwidth in the mmWave frequency band. Researchers seeking to compensate for mmWave's high path loss and to achieve both gain and directivity have proposed that mmWave multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems make use of beamforming systems. Hybrid beamforming in mmWave demonstrates promising performance in achieving high gain and directivity by using phase shifters at the analog processing block. What remains a problem, however, is the actual implementation of mmWave beamforming systems; to fabricate such a system is costly and complex. With the aim of reducing such cost and complexity, this article presents actual prototypes of the lens antenna as an effective device to be used in the future 5G mmWave hybrid beamforming systems. Using a lens as a passive phase shifter enables beamforming without the heavy network of active phase shifters, while gain and directivity are achieved by the energy-focusing property of the lens. Proposed in this article are two types of lens antennas, one for static and the other for mobile usage. Their performance is evaluated using measurements and simulation data along with link-level analysis via a software defined radio (SDR) platform. Results show the promising potential of the lens antenna for its high gain and directivity, and its improved beam-switching feasibility compared to when a lens is not used. System-level evaluations reveal the significant throughput enhancement in both real indoor and outdoor environments. Moreover, the lens antenna's design issues are also discussed by evaluating different lens sizes.

To communicate at the nanoscale, researchers have proposed molecular communication as an energy-efficient solution. The drawback to this solution is that the histogram of the molecules' hitting times, which constitute the molecular signal at the receiver, has a heavy tail. Reducing the effects of this heavy tail, inter-symbol interference (ISI), has been the focus of most prior research. In this paper, a novel way of decreasing the ISI by defining a counting region on the spherical receiver's surface facing towards the transmitter node is proposed. The beneficial effect comes from the fact that the molecules received from the back lobe of the receiver are more likely to be coming through longer paths that contribute to ISI. In order to justify this idea, the joint distribution of the arrival molecules with respect to angle and time is derived. Using this distribution, the channel model function is approximated for the proposed system, i.e., the partially counting absorbing spherical receiver. After validating the channel model function, the characteristics of the molecular signal are investigated and improved performance is presented. Moreover, the optimal counting region in terms of bit error rate is found analytically.

Compared to the current wireless communication systems, millimeter wave (mm-Wave) promises a wide range of spectrum. As viable alternatives to existing mm-Wave channel models, various map-based channel models with different modeling methods have been widely discussed. Map-based channel models are based on a ray-tracing algorithm and include realistic channel parameters in a given map. Such parameters enable researchers to accurately evaluate novel technologies in the mm-Wave range. Diverse map-based modeling methods result in different modeling objectives, including the characteristics of channel parameters and different complexities of the modeling procedure. This article outlines an overview of map-based mm-Wave channel models and proposes a concept of how they can be utilized to integrate a hardware testbed/sounder with a software testbed/sounder. In addition, we categorize map-based channel parameters and provide guidelines for hybrid modeling. Next, we share the measurement data and the map-based channel parameters with the public. Lastly, we evaluate a machine learning-based beam selection algorithm through the shared database. We expect that the offered guidelines and the shared database will enable researchers to readily design a map-based channel model.
