Efficient thermal management in high-power electronics cooling can be achieved using phase-change heat transfer devices, such as vapor chambers. Traditional vapor chambers use wicks to transport condensate for efficient thermal exchange and to prevent "dry-out" of the evaporator. However, wicks in vapor chambers present significant design challenges arising out of large pressure drops across the wicking material, which slows down condensate transport rates and increases the chances for dry-out. Thicker wicks add to overall thermal resistance, while deterring the development of thinner devices by limiting the total thickness of the vapor chamber. Wickless vapor chambers eliminate the use of metal wicks entirely, by incorporating complementary wettability-patterned flat plates on both the evaporator and the condenser side. Such surface modifications enhance fluid transport on the evaporator side, while allowing the chambers to be virtually as thin as imaginable, thereby permitting design of thermally efficient thin electronic cooling devices. While wick-free vapor chambers have been studied and efficient design strategies have been suggested, we delve into real-life applications of wick-free vapor chambers in forced air cooling of high-power electronics. An experimental setup is developed wherein two Si-based MOSFETs of TO-247-3 packaging having high conduction resistance, are connected in parallel and switched at 100 kHz, to emulate high frequency power electronics operations. A rectangular copper wick-free vapor chamber spreads heat laterally over a surface 13 times larger than the heating area. This chamber is cooled externally by a fan that circulates air at room temperature. The present experimental setup extends our previous work on wick-free vapor chambers, while demonstrating the effectiveness of low-cost air cooling in vapor-chamber enhanced high-power electronics applications.

In target speaker extraction, many studies rely on the speaker embedding which is obtained from an enrollment of the target speaker and employed as the guidance. However, solely using speaker embedding may not fully utilize the contextual information contained in the enrollment. In this paper, we directly exploit this contextual information in the time-frequency (T-F) domain. Specifically, the T-F representations of the enrollment and the mixed signal are interacted to compute the weighting matrices through an attention mechanism. These weighting matrices reflect the similarity among different frames of the T-F representations and are further employed to obtain the consistent T-F representations of the enrollment. These consistent representations are served as the guidance, allowing for better exploitation of the contextual information. Furthermore, the proposed method achieves the state-of-the-art performance on the benchmark dataset and shows its effectiveness in the complex scenarios.

Dynamic parameterization of acoustic environments has drawn widespread attention in the field of audio processing. Precise representation of local room acoustic characteristics is crucial when designing audio filters for various audio rendering applications. Key parameters in this context include reverberation time (RT60) and geometric room volume. In recent years, neural networks have been extensively applied in the task of blind room parameter estimation. However, there remains a question of whether pure attention mechanisms can achieve superior performance in this task. To address this issue, this study employs blind room parameter estimation based on monaural noisy speech signals. Various model architectures are investigated, including a proposed attention-based model. This model is a convolution-free Audio Spectrogram Transformer, utilizing patch splitting, attention mechanisms, and cross-modality transfer learning from a pretrained Vision Transformer. Experimental results suggest that the proposed attention mechanism-based model, relying purely on attention mechanisms without using convolution, exhibits significantly improved performance across various room parameter estimation tasks, especially with the help of dedicated pretraining and data augmentation schemes. Additionally, the model demonstrates more advantageous adaptability and robustness when handling variable-length audio inputs compared to existing methods.

Since the next-generation satellite network consisting of various service function domains, such as communication, observation, navigation, etc., is moving towards large-scale, using single-domain resources is difficult to provide satisfied and timely service guarantees for the rapidly increasing mission demands of each domain. Breaking the barriers of independence of resources in each domain, and realizing the cross-domain transmission of missions to efficiently collaborate inter-domain resources is a promising solution. However, the hybrid scheduling of different missions and the continuous increase in the number of service domains have strengthened the differences and dynamics of mission demands, making it challenging for an efficient cross-domain mission scheduling (CMS). To this end, this paper first accurately characterizes the communication resource state of inter-satellite in real-time exploiting the sparse resource representation scheme, and systematically characterizes the differentiation of mission demands by conducting the mission priority model. Based on the information of resources and missions, we construct the top- and bottom-layer mission scheduling models of reward association exploiting the correlation of intra- and inter-domain mission scheduling and formulate the Markov decision process-based hierarchical CMS problem. Further, to achieve higher adaptability and autonomy of CMS and efficiently mitigate the impact of network scale, a hierarchical intelligent CMS algorithm is developed to dynamically adjust and efficiently match the CMS policy according to different mission demands. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm has significant performance gain compared with independent domains and the existing CMS algorithms, and can still guarantee high service performance under different network scales.

Methods for status monitoring with consideration to the weather condition and forecasting with the use of in-service data from ships requires accurate and complete models for predicting the energy efficiency of a ship. The models need to effectively process all the operational data in real-time. This paper presents models that can predict fuel consumption using in-service data collected from a passenger ship. Statistical and domain-knowledge methods were used to select the proper input variables for the models. These methods prevent over-fitting, missing data, and multicollinearity while providing practical applicability. Prediction models that were investigated include multiple linear regression (MLR), decision tree approach (DT), an artificial neural network (ANN), and ensemble methods. In recent years, dynamic parameterization of acoustic environments has raised increasing attention in the field of audio processing. One of the key parameters that characterize the local room acoustics in isolation from orientation and directivity of sources and receivers is the geometric room volume. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been widely selected as the main models for conducting blind room acoustic parameter estimation, which aims to learn a direct map** from audio spectrograms to corresponding labels. With the recent trend of self-attention mechanisms, this paper introduces a purely attention-based model to blindly estimate room volumes based on single-channel noisy speech signals. We demonstrate the feasibility of eliminating the reliance on CNN for this task and the proposed Transformer architecture takes Gammatone magnitude spectral coefficients and phase spectrograms as inputs. To enhance the model performance given the task-specific dataset, cross-modality transfer learning is also applied. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed model outperforms traditional CNN models across a wide range of real-world acoustics spaces, especially with the help of the dedicated pretraining and data augmentation schemes.

Music is essential when editing videos, but selecting music manually is difficult and time-consuming. Thus, we seek to automatically generate background music tracks given video input. This is a challenging task since it requires music-video datasets, efficient architectures for video-to-music generation, and reasonable metrics, none of which currently exist. To close this gap, we introduce a complete recipe including dataset, benchmark model, and evaluation metric for video background music generation. We present SymMV, a video and symbolic music dataset with various musical annotations. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first video-music dataset with rich musical annotations. We also propose a benchmark video background music generation framework named V-MusProd, which utilizes music priors of chords, melody, and accompaniment along with video-music relations of semantic, color, and motion features. To address the lack of objective metrics for video-music correspondence, we design a retrieval-based metric VMCP built upon a powerful video-music representation learning model. Experiments show that with our dataset, V-MusProd outperforms the state-of-the-art method in both music quality and correspondence with videos. We believe our dataset, benchmark model, and evaluation metric will boost the development of video background music generation. Our dataset and code are available at https://github.com/zhuole1025/SymMV.

Collecting paired training data is difficult in practice, but the unpaired samples broadly exist. Current approaches aim at generating synthesized training data from unpaired samples by exploring the relationship between the corrupted and clean data. This work proposes LUD-VAE, a deep generative method to learn the joint probability density function from data sampled from marginal distributions. Our approach is based on a carefully designed probabilistic graphical model in which the clean and corrupted data domains are conditionally independent. Using variational inference, we maximize the evidence lower bound (ELBO) to estimate the joint probability density function. Furthermore, we show that the ELBO is computable without paired samples under the inference invariant assumption. This property provides the mathematical rationale of our approach in the unpaired setting. Finally, we apply our method to real-world image denoising, super-resolution, and low-light image enhancement tasks and train the models using the synthetic data generated by the LUD-VAE. Experimental results validate the advantages of our method over other approaches.

In the scenario with reverberation, the experience of human-machine interaction will become worse. In order to solve this problem, many methods for the dereverberation have emerged. At present, how to update the parameters of the Kalman filter in the existing dereverberation methods based on multichannel linear prediction (MCLP) is a challenging task, especially, accurate power spectral density (PSD) estimation of target speech. In this paper, minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) beamformer and MCLP are effectively fused in the dereverberation, where the PSD of target speech used for Kalman filter is modified in the MCLP. In order to construct a MVDR beamformer, the PSD of late reverberation and the PSD of the noise are estimated simultaneously by the blocking-based PSD estimator. Thus, the PSD of target speech used for Kalman filter can be obtained by subtracting the PSD of late reverberation and the PSD of the noise from the PSD of observation signal. Compared to the reference methods, the proposed method shows an outstanding performance.

In this paper, a new multi-source wideband direction of arrival (MSW-DOA) estimation method is proposed for the signal with non-uniform distribution using the sub-array of uniform linear array. Different from conventional methods, based on the free far-field model, the proposed method mainly makes two contributions. One is that the sub-array decomposition is adopted to improve the accuracy of MSW-DOA estimation by minimizing the weighted error, and the other one is that the frequency focusing procedure is optimized according to the presence probability of sound sources for reducing the influence of the sub-bands with low signal to noise ratio (SNR). Simulation results show that the proposed method can effectively improve the performance of wideband DOA estimation in the case of multiple sound sources.

In this paper, we investigated online receiver-based packet loss concealment which is much more portable and applicable. For ensuring the speech naturalness, rather than directly processing time-domain waveforms or separately reconstructing amplitudes and phases in frequency domain, a flow-based neural vocoder is adopted to generate the substitution waveform of lost packet from Mel-spectrogram which is generated from history contents by a well-designed neural predictor. Furthermore, a waveform similarity-based smoothing post-process is created to mitigate the discontinuity of speech and avoid the artifacts. Speaker-independent speech separation has achieved remarkable performance in recent years with the development of deep neural network (DNN). Various network architectures, from traditional convolutional neural network (CNN) and recurrent neural network (RNN) to advanced transformer, have been designed sophistically to improve separation performance. However, the state-of-the-art models usually suffer from several flaws related to the computation, such as large model size, huge memory consumption and computational complexity. To find the balance between the performance and computational efficiency and to further explore the modeling ability of traditional network structure, we combine RNN and a newly proposed variant of convolutional network to cope with speech separation problem. By embedding two RNNs into basic block of this variant with the help of dual-path strategy, the proposed network can effectively learn the local information and global dependency. Besides, a four-staged structure enables the separation procedure to be performed gradually at finer and finer scales as the feature dimension increases. The experimental results on various datasets have proven the effectiveness of the proposed method and shown that a trade-off between the separation performance and computational efficiency is well achieved.

The multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) detection problem, a fundamental problem in modern digital communications, is to detect a vector of transmitted symbols from the noisy outputs of a fading MIMO channel. The maximum likelihood detector can be formulated as a complex least-squares problem with discrete variables, which is NP-hard in general. Various semidefinite relaxation (SDR) methods have been proposed in the literature to solve the problem due to their polynomial-time worst-case complexity and good detection error rate performance. In this paper, we consider two popular classes of SDR-based detectors and study the conditions under which the SDRs are tight and the relationship between different SDR models. For the enhanced complex and real SDRs proposed recently by Lu et al., we refine their analysis and derive the necessary and sufficient condition for the complex SDR to be tight, as well as a necessary condition for the real SDR to be tight. In contrast, we also show that another SDR proposed by Mobasher et al. is not tight with high probability under mild conditions. Moreover, we establish a general theorem that shows the equivalence between two subsets of positive semidefinite matrices in different dimensions by exploiting a special "separable" structure in the constraints. Our theorem recovers two existing equivalence results of SDRs defined in different settings and has the potential to find other applications due to its generality.

Existing domain adaptation methods aim at learning features that can be generalized among domains. These methods commonly require to update source classifier to adapt to the target domain and do not properly handle the trade off between the source domain and the target domain. In this work, instead of training a classifier to adapt to the target domain, we use a separable component called data calibrator to help the fixed source classifier recover discrimination power in the target domain, while preserving the source domain's performance. When the difference between two domains is small, the source classifier's representation is sufficient to perform well in the target domain and outperforms GAN-based methods in digits. Otherwise, the proposed method can leverage synthetic images generated by GANs to boost performance and achieve state-of-the-art performance in digits datasets and driving scene semantic segmentation. Our method empirically reveals that certain intriguing hints, which can be mitigated by adversarial attack to domain discriminators, are one of the sources for performance degradation under the domain shift.

Sound event detection (SED) is typically posed as a supervised learning problem requiring training data with strong temporal labels of sound events. However, the production of datasets with strong labels normally requires unaffordable labor cost. It limits the practical application of supervised SED methods. The recent advances in SED approaches focuses on detecting sound events by taking advantages of weakly labeled or unlabeled training data. In this paper, we propose a joint framework to solve the SED task using large-scale unlabeled in-domain data. In particular, a state-of-the-art general audio tagging model is first employed to predict weak labels for unlabeled data. On the other hand, a weakly supervised architecture based on the convolutional recurrent neural network (CRNN) is developed to solve the strong annotations of sound events with the aid of the unlabeled data with predicted labels. It is found that the SED performance generally increases as more unlabeled data is added into the training. To address the noisy label problem of unlabeled data, an ensemble strategy is applied to increase the system robustness. The proposed system is evaluated on the SED dataset of DCASE 2018 challenge. It reaches a F1-score of 21.0%, resulting in an improvement of 10% over the baseline system.

Microwave phased array antennas (PAAs) are very attractive to defense applications and high-speed wireless communications for their abilities of fast beam scanning and complex beam pattern control. However, traditional PAAs based on phase shifters suffer from the beam-squint problem and have limited bandwidths. True-time-delay (TTD) beamforming based on low-loss photonic delay lines can solve this problem. But it is still quite challenging to build large-scale photonic TTD beamformers due to their high hardware complexity. In this paper, we demonstrate a photonic TTD beamforming network based on a miniature microresonator frequency comb (microcomb) source and dispersive time delay. A method incorporating optical phase modulation and programmable spectral sha** is proposed for positive and negative apodization weighting to achieve arbitrary microwave beam pattern control. The experimentally demonstrated TTD beamforming network can support a PAA with 21 elements. The microwave frequency range is $\mathbf{8\sim20\ {GHz}}$, and the beam scanning range is $\mathbf{\pm 60.2^\circ}$. Detailed measurements of the microwave amplitudes and phases are performed. The beamforming performances of Gaussian, rectangular beams and beam notch steering are evaluated through simulations by assuming a uniform radiating antenna array. The scheme can potentially support larger PAAs with hundreds of elements by increasing the number of comb lines with broadband microcomb generation.
