Wearable fitness devices are widely used to track an individual's health and physical activities to improve the quality of health services. These devices sense a considerable amount of sensitive data processed by a centralized third party. While many researchers have thoroughly evaluated privacy issues surrounding wearable fitness trackers, no study has addressed privacy issues in trackers by giving control of the data to the user. Blockchain is an emerging technology with outstanding advantages in resolving consent management privacy concerns. As there are no fully transparent, legally compliant solutions for sharing personal fitness data, this study introduces an architecture for a human-centric, legally compliant, decentralized and dynamic consent system based on blockchain and smart contracts. Algorithms and sequence diagrams of the proposed system's activities show consent-related data flow among various agents, which are used later to prove the system's trustworthiness by formalizing the security requirements. The security properties of the proposed system were evaluated using the formal security modeling framework SeMF, which demonstrates the feasibility of the solution at an abstract level based on formal language theory. As a result, we have empirically proven that blockchain technology is suitable for mitigating the privacy issues of fitness providers by recording individuals' consent using blockchain and smart contracts.

The development of highly accurate deep learning methods for indoor localization is often hindered by the unavailability of sufficient data measurements in the desired environment to perform model training. To overcome the challenge of collecting costly measurements, this paper proposes a cross-environment approach that compensates for insufficient labelled measurements via a joint semi-supervised and transfer learning technique to transfer, in an appropriate manner, the model obtained from a rich-data environment to the desired environment for which data is limited. This is achieved via a sequence of operations that exploit the similarity across environments to enhance unlabelled data model training of the desired environment. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed cross-environment approach outperforms the conventional method, convolutional neural network (CNN), with a significant increase in localization accuracy, up to 43%. Moreover, with only 40% data measurements, the proposed cross-environment approach compensates for data inadequacy and replicates the localization accuracy of the conventional method, CNN, which uses 75% data measurements.

Evolving Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications often require the use of sensor-based indoor tracking and positioning, for which the performance is significantly improved by identifying the type of the surrounding indoor environment. This identification is of high importance since it leads to higher localization accuracy. This paper presents a novel method based on a cascaded two-stage machine learning approach for highly-accurate and robust localization in indoor environments using adaptive selection and combination of RF features. In the proposed method, machine learning is first used to identify the type of the surrounding indoor environment. Then, in the second stage, machine learning is employed to identify the most appropriate selection and combination of RF features that yield the highest localization accuracy. Analysis is based on k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN) machine learning algorithm applied on a real dataset generated from practical measurements of the RF signal in realistic indoor environments. Received Signal Strength, Channel Transfer Function, and Frequency Coherence Function are the primary RF features being explored and combined. Numerical investigations demonstrate that prediction based on the concatenation of primary RF features enhanced significantly as the localization accuracy improved by at least 50% to more than 70%.

The report focuses on three areas in particular: the first is the Received Signal Strength indicator technique, Direction of Arrival technique, and the integration of two algorithms, RSS and DOA, in order to build a hybrid, more robust algorithms.
In the Received Signal Strength (RSS), the unknown node location is estimated using trilateration. This report examines the performance of different estimators such as Least Square, Weighted Least Square, and Huber robustness in order to obtain the most robust performance.
In the direction of arrival (DOA) method, the estimation is carried out using Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC), Root-MUSIC, and Estimation of Signal Parameters Via Rotational Invariance Technique (ESPRIT) algorithms. We investigate multiple signal scenarios utilizing various antenna geometries, which includes uniform linear array (ULA) and uniform circular array (UCA). Specific attention is given for multipath scenarios in which signals become spatially correlated (or coherent). This required the use of pre-processing techniques, which include phase mode excitation (PME), spatial smoothing (SS), and Toeplitz.
Further improvements of existing localization techniques are demonstrated through the use of a hybrid approach in which various combinations of RSS and DOA are explored, simulated, and analyzed. This has led to two major contributions: the first contribution is a combined RSS/DOA method, based on UCA, which has the tolerance of detecting both uncorrelated and coherent signals simultaneously. The second major contribution is a combined Root-MUSIC/Toepltiz method, based on UCA, which is outperforms other techniques in terms of increased number of detected signals and reduced computationally load.
