Although semantic communication (SC) has shown its potential in efficiently transmitting multi-modal data such as text, speeches and images, SC for videos has focused primarily on pixel-level reconstruction. However, these SC systems may be suboptimal for downstream intelligent tasks. Moreover, SC systems without pixel-level video reconstruction present advantages by achieving higher bandwidth efficiency and real-time performance of various intelligent tasks. The difficulty in such system design lies in the extraction of task-related compact semantic representations and their accurate delivery over noisy channels. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end SC system for video question answering (VideoQA) tasks called VideoQA-SC. Our goal is to accomplish VideoQA tasks directly based on video semantics over noisy or fading wireless channels, bypassing the need for video reconstruction at the receiver. To this end, we develop a spatiotemporal semantic encoder for effective video semantic extraction, and a learning-based bandwidth-adaptive deep joint source-channel coding (DJSCC) scheme for efficient and robust video semantic transmission. Experiments demonstrate that VideoQA-SC outperforms traditional and advanced DJSCC-based SC systems that rely on video reconstruction at the receiver under a wide range of channel conditions and bandwidth constraints. In particular, when the signal-to-noise ratio is low, VideoQA-SC can improve the answer accuracy by 5.17% while saving almost 99.5% of the bandwidth at the same time, compared with the advanced DJSCC-based SC system. Our results show the great potential of task-oriented SC system design for video applications.

Extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) is crucial for satisfying the high data rate requirements of the sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks. In this context, ensuring accurate acquisition of channel state information (CSI) with low complexity becomes imperative. Moreover, deploying an extremely large antenna array at the base station (BS) might result in some scatterers being located in near-field, while others are situated in far-field, leading to a hybrid-field communication scenario. To address these challenges, this paper introduces two stochastic gradient pursuit (SGP)-based schemes for the hybrid-field channel estimation in two scenarios. For the first scenario in which the prior knowledge of the specific proportion of the number of near-field and far-field channel paths is known, the scheme can effectively leverage the angular-domain sparsity of the far-field channels and the polar-domain sparsity of the near-field channels such that the channel estimation in these two fields can be performed separately. For the second scenario which the proportion is not available, we propose an off-grid SGP-based channel estimation scheme, which iterates through the values of the proportion parameter based on a criterion before performing the hybrid-field channel estimation. We demonstrate numerically that both of the proposed channel estimation schemes achieve superior performance in terms of both estimation accuracy and achievable rates while enjoying lower computational complexity compared with existing schemes. Additionally, we reveal that as the number of antennas at the UE increases, the normalized mean square error (NMSE) performances of the proposed schemes remain basically unchanged, while the NMSE performances of existing ones improve. Remarkably, even in this scenario, the proposed schemes continue to outperform the existing ones.

The orthogonal delay-Doppler (DD) division multiplexing(ODDM) modulation has been recently proposed as a promising modulation scheme for next-generation communication systems with high mobility. Despite its benefits, ODDM modulation and other DD domain modulation schemes face the challenge of excessive equalization complexity. To address this challenge, we propose time domain Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) for the ODDM transmitter, to make the DD domain single-tap equalizer feasible, thereby reducing the equalization complexity. In our design, we first pre-cancel the inter-symbolinterference (ISI) using the linear time-varying (LTV) channel information. Second, different from classical THP designs, we introduce a modified modulo operation with an adaptive modulus, by which the joint DD domain data multiplexing and timedomain ISI pre-cancellation can be realized without excessively increasing the bit errors. We then analytically study the losses encountered in this design, namely the power loss, the modulo noise loss, and the modulo signal loss. Based on this analysis, BER lower bounds of the ODDM system with time domain THP are derived when 4-QAM or 16-QAM modulations are adopted for symbol map** in the DD domain. Finally, through numerical results, we validate our analysis and then demonstrate that the ODDM system with time domain THP is a promising solution to realize better BER performance over LTV channels compared to orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems with single-tap equalizer and ODDM systems with maximum ratio combining.

Terahertz (THz) cell-free massive multiple-input-multiple-output (mMIMO) networks have been envisioned as a prospective technology for achieving higher system capacity, improved performance, and ultra-high reliability in 6G networks. However, due to severe attenuation and limited scattering in THz transmission, as well as high power consumption for increased number of access points (APs), further improvement of network capacity becomes challenging. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been introduced as a low-cost solution to reduce AP deployment and assist in data transmission. However, due to the ultra-wide bandwidth and frequency-dependent characteristics of RISs, beam split effect has become an unavoidable obstacle. To compensate the severe performance degradation caused by beam split effect, we introduce additional time delay (TD) layers at both access points (APs) and RISs. Accordingly, we propose a joint precoding framework at APs and RISs to fully unleash the potential of the considered network. Specifically, we first formulate the joint precoding as a non-convex optimization problem. Then, given the location of unchanged RISs, we adjust the time delays (TDs) of APs to align the generated beams towards RISs. After that, with knowledge of the optimal TDs of APs, we decouple the optimization problem into three subproblems of optimizing the baseband beamformers, RISs and TDs of RISs, respectively. Exploiting multidimensional complex quadratic transform, we transform the subproblems into convex forms and solve them under alternate optimizing framework. Numerical results verify that the proposed method can effectively mitigate beam split effect and significantly improve the achievable rate compared with conventional cell-free mMIMO networks.

The use of deep learning (DL) for channel state information (CSI) feedback has garnered widespread attention across academia and industry. The mainstream DL architectures, e.g., CsiNet, deploy DL models on the base station (BS) side and the user equipment (UE) side, which are highly coupled and need to be trained jointly. However, two-sided DL models require collaborations between different network vendors and UE vendors, which entails considerable challenges in order to achieve consensus, e.g., model maintenance and responsibility. Furthermore, DL-based CSI feedback design invokes DL to reduce only the CSI feedback error, whereas jointly optimizing several modules at the transceivers would provide more significant gains. This article presents DL-based CSI feedback from the perspectives of one-sided model and joint multi-module learning. We herein introduce various novel one-sided CSI feedback architectures. In particular, the recently proposed CSI-PPPNet provides a one-sided one-for-all framework, which allows a DL model to deal with arbitrary CSI compression ratios. We review different joint multi-module learning methods, where the CSI feedback module is learned jointly with other modules including channel coding, channel estimation, pilot design and precoding design. Finally, future directions and challenges for DL-based CSI feedback are discussed, from the perspectives of inherent limitations of artificial intelligence (AI) and practical deployment issues.

The design of precoding plays a crucial role in achieving a high downlink sum-rate in multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. In this correspondence, we propose a deep learning based joint CSI feedback and multiuser precoding method in frequency division duplex systems, aiming at maximizing the downlink sum-rate performance in an end-to-end manner. Specifically, the eigenvectors of the CSI matrix are compressed using deep joint source-channel coding techniques. This compression method enhances the resilience of the feedback CSI information against degradation in the feedback channel. A joint multiuser precoding module and a power allocation module are designed to adjust the precoding direction and the precoding power for users based on the feedback CSI information. Experimental results demonstrate that the downlink sum-rate can be significantly improved by using the proposed method, especially in scenarios with low signal-to-noise ratio and low feedback overhead.

Groundbreaking applications such as ChatGPT have heightened research interest in generative artificial intelligence (GAI). Essentially, GAI excels not only in content generation but also in signal processing, offering support for wireless sensing. Hence, we introduce a novel GAI-assisted human flow detection system (G-HFD). Rigorously, G-HFD first uses channel state information (CSI) to estimate the velocity and acceleration of propagation path length change of the human-induced reflection (HIR). Then, given the strong inference ability of the diffusion model, we propose a unified weighted conditional diffusion model (UW-CDM) to denoise the estimation results, enabling the detection of the number of targets. Next, we use the CSI obtained by a uniform linear array with wavelength spacing to estimate the HIR's time of flight and direction of arrival (DoA). In this process, UW-CDM solves the problem of ambiguous DoA spectrum, ensuring accurate DoA estimation. Finally, through clustering, G-HFD determines the number of subflows and the number of targets in each subflow, i.e., the subflow size. The evaluation based on practical downlink communication signals shows G-HFD's accuracy of subflow size detection can reach 91%. This validates its effectiveness and underscores the significant potential of GAI in the context of wireless sensing.

Cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) is a promising technique for achieving high spectral efficiency (SE) using multiple distributed access points (APs). However, harsh propagation environments often lead to significant communication performance degradation due to high penetration loss. To overcome this issue, we introduce the reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) into the CF mMIMO system as a low-cost and power-efficient solution. In this paper, we focus on optimizing the joint precoding design of the RIS-aided CF mMIMO system to maximize the sum SE. This involves optimizing the precoding matrix at the APs and the reflection coefficients at the RIS. To tackle this problem, we propose a fully distributed multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) algorithm that incorporates fuzzy logic (FL). Unlike conventional approaches that rely on alternating optimization techniques, our FL-based MARL algorithm only requires local channel state information, which reduces the need for high backhaul capacity. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed FL-MARL algorithm effectively reduces computational complexity while achieving similar performance as conventional MARL methods.

GNN-based models are shown to be able to learn the structural information about graphs representing the wireless networks to adapt to the time-varying channel state information and dynamics of network topology. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of applying GNNs to optimize wireless networks via answering three fundamental questions, i.e., how to input the wireless network data into GNNs, how to improve the performance of GNNs, and how to evaluate GNNs. Particularly, two graph representations are given to transform wireless network parameters into graph-structured data. Then, we focus on the architecture design of the GNN-based models via introducing the basic message passing as well as model improvement methods including multi-head attention mechanism and residual structure. At last, we give task-oriented evaluation metrics for DL-enabled wireless resource allocation. We also highlight certain challenges and potential research directions for the application of GNNs in wireless networks.

However, due to the typical employment of hybrid beamforming architecture in THz systems, as well as the passive nature of RIS which lacks the capability to process pilot signals, obtaining channel state information (CSI) is facing significant challenges. To accurately estimate the cascaded channel, we propose a novel low-complexity channel estimation scheme, which includes three steps. Specifically, we first estimate full CSI within a small subset of subcarriers (SCs). Then, we acquire angular information at base station and RIS based on the full CSI. Finally, we derive spatial directions and recover full-CSI for the remaining SCs. Theoretical analysis and simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can achieve superior performance in terms of normalized mean-square-error and exhibit a lower computational complexity compared with the existing algorithms.

Millimeter wave (mmWave) communications are sensitive to blockage over radio propagation paths. The emerging paradigm of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has the potential to overcome this issue by its ability to arbitrarily reflect the incident signals toward desired directions. This paper proposes a Neyman-Pearson (NP) criterion-based blockage-aware algorithm to improve communication resilience against blockage in mobile mmWave multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems. By virtue of this pragmatic blockage-aware technique, we further propose an outage-constrained beamforming design for downlink mmWave MIMO transmission to achieve outage probability minimization and achievable rate maximization. To minimize the outage probability, a robust RIS beamformer with variant beamwidth is designed to combat uncertain channel state information (CSI). For the rate maximization problem, an accelerated projected gradient descent (PGD) algorithm is developed to solve the computational challenge of high-dimensional RIS phase-shift matrix (PSM) optimization. Particularly, we leverage a subspace constraint to reduce the scope of the projection operation and formulate a new Nesterov momentum acceleration scheme to speed up the convergence process of PGD. Extensive experiments confirm the effectiveness of the proposed blockage-aware approach, and the proposed accelerated PGD algorithm outperforms a number of representative baseline algorithms in terms of the achievable rate.

Within ISAC emerging application scenarios, vehicular ISAC technologies have the potential to enhance traffic efficiency and safety through integration of communication and synchronized perception abilities. To establish a foundational theoretical support for vehicular ISAC system design and standardization, it is necessary to conduct channel measurements, and modeling to obtain a deep understanding of the radio propagation. The emerging 6G network envisions integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) as a promising solution to meet growing demand for native perception ability. To optimize and evaluate ISAC systems and techniques, it is crucial to have an accurate and realistic wireless channel model. However, some important features of ISAC channels have not been well characterized, for example, most existing ISAC channel models consider communication channels and sensing channels independently, whereas ignoring correlation under the consistent environment. Moreover, sensing channels have not been well modeled in the existing standard-level channel models. Therefore, in order to better model ISAC channel, a cluster-based statistical channel model is proposed in this paper, which is based on measurements conducted at 28 GHz. In the proposed model, a new framework based on 3GPP standard is proposed, which includes communication clusters and sensing clusters. Clustering and tracking algorithms are used to extract and analyze ISAC channel characteristics. Furthermore, some special sensing cluster structures such as shared sensing cluster, newborn sensing cluster, etc., are defined to model correlation and difference between communication and sensing channels. Emerging industrial applications involving robotic collaborative operations and mobile robots require a more reliable and precise wireless network for deterministic data transmission. To meet this demand, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is promoting the integration of 5th Generation Mobile Communication Technology (5G) and Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN). Time synchronization is essential for deterministic data transmission. Based on the 3GPP's vision of the 5G and TSN integrated networking with interoperability, we improve the time synchronization of TSN to conquer the multi-gNB competition, re-transmission, and mobility problems for the integrated 5G time synchronization. We implemented the improvement mechanisms and systematically validated the performance of 5G+TSN time synchronization. Based on the simulation in 500m x 500m industrial environments, the improved time synchronization achieved a precision of 1 microsecond with interoperability between 5G nodes and TSN nodes.

In this paper, we develop an effective degrees of freedom (EDoF) performance analysis framework specifically tailored for near-field XL-MIMO systems. We explore five representative distinct XL-MIMO hardware designs, including uniform planar array (UPA)-based with point antennas, two-dimensional (2D) continuous aperture (CAP) plane-based, UPA-based with patch antennas, uniform linear array (ULA)-based, and one-dimensional (1D) CAP line segment-based XL-MIMO systems. Our analysis encompasses two near-field channel models: the scalar and dyadic Green's function-based channel models. More importantly, when applying the scalar Green's function-based channel, we derive EDoF expressions in the closed-form, characterizing the impacts of the physical size of the transceiver, the transmitting distance, and the carrier frequency. In our numerical results, we evaluate and compare the EDoF performance across all examined XL-MIMO designs, confirming the accuracy of our proposed closed-form expressions. Furthermore, we observe that with an increasing number of antennas, the EDoF performance for both UPA-based and ULA-based systems approaches that of 2D CAP plane and 1D CAP line segment-based systems, respectively. Moreover, we unveil that the EDoF performance for near-field XL-MIMO systems is predominantly determined by the array aperture size rather than the sheer number of antennas.

However, the increasing number of transmit antennas aggravates the feedback overhead of CSI. Recently, deep learning (DL) has shown considerable potential to reduce CSI feedback overhead. In this paper, we propose a Swin Transformer-based autoencoder network called SwinCFNet for the CSI feedback task. In particular, the proposed method can effectively capture the long-range dependence information of CSI. Moreover, we explore the impact of the number of Swin Transformer blocks and the dimension of feature channels on the performance of SwinCFNet. Experimental results show that SwinCFNet significantly outperforms other DL-based methods with comparable model sizes, especially for the outdoor scenario.

This paper proposes a novel three-dimensional (3D) theoretical regular-shaped geometry-based stochastic model (RS-GBSM) and the corresponding sum-of-sinusoids (SoS) simulation model for non-isotropic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) Ricean fading channels. The proposed RS-GBSM, combining line-of-sight (LoS) components, a two-sphere model, and an elliptic-cylinder model, has the ability to study the impact of the vehicular traffic density (VTD) on channel statistics, and jointly considers the azimuth and elevation angles by using the von Mises Fisher distribution. Moreover, a novel parameter computation method is proposed for jointly calculating the azimuth and elevation angles in the SoS channel simulator. Based on the proposed 3D theoretical RS-GBSM and its SoS simulation model, statistical properties are derived and thoroughly investigated. The impact of the elevation angle in the 3D model on key statistical properties is investigated by comparing with those of the corresponding two-dimensional (2D) model. It is demonstrated that the 3D model is more accurate to characterize real V2V channels, in particular for pico cell scenarios. Finally, close agreement is achieved between the theoretical model, SoS simulation model, and simulation results, demonstrating the utility of the proposed models.

With the increasing demands from passengers for data-intensive services, millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication is considered as an effective technique to release the transmission pressure on high speed train (HST) networks. However, mmWave signals ncounter severe losses when passing through the carriage, which decreases the quality of services on board. In this paper, we investigate an intelligent refracting surface (IRS)-assisted HST communication system. Herein, an IRS is deployed on the train window to dynamically reconfigure the propagation environment, and a hybrid time division multiple access-nonorthogonal multiple access scheme is leveraged for interference mitigation. We aim to maximize the overall throughput while taking into account the constraints imposed by base station beamforming, IRS discrete phase shifts and transmit power. To obtain a practical solution, we employ an alternating optimization method and propose a two-stage algorithm. In the first stage, the successive convex approximation method and branch and bound algorithm are leveraged for IRS phase shift design. In the second stage, the Lagrangian multiplier method is utilized for power allocation. Simulation results demonstrate the benefits of IRS adoption and power allocation for throughput improvement in mmWave HST networks.

The amalgamation of cell-free networks and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has become a prospective technique for future sixth-generation wireless communication systems. In this paper, we focus on the precoding and beamforming design for a downlink RIS-aided cell-free network. The design is formulated as a non-convex optimization problem by jointly optimizing the combining vector, active precoding, and passive RIS beamforming for minimizing the weighted sum of users' mean square error. A novel joint distributed precoding and beamforming framework is proposed to decentralize the alternating optimization method for acquiring a suboptimal solution to the design problem. The concept of age of information (AoI) has been proposed to quantify information freshness, which is crucial for time-sensitive applications. However, in millimeter wave (mmWave) communication systems, the link blockage caused by obstacles and the severe path loss greatly impair the freshness of information received by the user equipments (UEs). In this paper, we focus on reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted mmWave communications, where beamforming is performed at transceivers to provide directional beam gain and a RIS is deployed to combat link blockage. We aim to maximize the system sum rate while satisfying the information freshness requirements of UEs by jointly optimizing the beamforming at transceivers, the discrete RIS reflection coefficients, and the UE scheduling strategy. To facilitate a practical solution, we decompose the problem into two subproblems. For the first per-UE data rate maximization problem, we further decompose it into a beamforming optimization subproblem and a RIS reflection coefficient optimization subproblem. Considering the difficulty of channel estimation, we utilize the hierarchical search method for the former and the local search method for the latter, and then adopt the block coordinate descent (BCD) method to alternately solve them. For the second scheduling strategy design problem, a low-complexity heuristic scheduling algorithm is designed. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively improve the system sum rate while satisfying the information freshness requirements of all UEs.

In this paper, we propose two deep joint source and channel coding (DJSCC) structures with attention modules for the multi-input multi-output (MIMO) channel, including a serial structure and a parallel structure. With singular value decomposition (SVD)-based precoding scheme, the MIMO channel can be decomposed into various sub-channels, and the feature outputs will experience sub-channels with different channel qualities. In the serial structure, one single network is used at both the transmitter and the receiver to jointly process data streams of all MIMO subchannels, while data steams of different MIMO subchannels are processed independently via multiple sub-networks in the parallel structure. The attention modules in both serial and parallel architectures enable the system to adapt to varying channel qualities and adjust the quantity of information outputs in accordance with the channel qualities. Experimental results demonstrate the proposed DJSCC structures have improved image transmission performance, and reveal the phenomenon via non-parameter entropy estimation that the learned DJSCC transceivers tend to transmit more information over better sub-channels.

The advantages of graph neural networks (GNNs) in leveraging the graph topology of wireless networks have drawn increasing attentions. This paper studies the GNN-based learning approach for the sum-rate maximization in multiple-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) networks subject to the users' individual data rate requirements and the power budget of the base station. By modeling the MU-MISO network as a graph, a GNN-based architecture named CRGAT is proposed to directly map the channel state information to the beamforming vectors. The attention-enabled aggregation and the residual-assisted combination are adopted to enhance the learning capability and avoid the oversmoothing issue. Furthermore, a novel activation function is proposed for the constraint due to the limited power budget at the base station. The CRGAT is trained in an unsupervised learning manner with two proposed loss functions. An evaluation method is proposed for the learning-based approach, based on which the effectiveness of the proposed CRGAT is validated in comparison with several convex optimization and learning based approaches. Numerical results are provided to reveal the advantages of the CRGAT including the millisecond-level response with limited optimality performance loss, the scalability to different number of users and power budgets, and the adaptability to different system settings.

Extremely large-scale multiple-input-multiple output (XL-MIMO) is a promising technology to achieve high spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) in future wireless systems. The larger array aperture of XL-MIMO makes communication scenarios closer to the near-field region. Therefore, near-field resource allocation is essential in realizing the above key performance indicators (KPIs). Moreover, the overall performance of XL-MIMO systems heavily depends on the channel characteristics of the selected users, eliminating interference between users through beamforming, power control, etc. The above resource allocation issue constitutes a complex joint multi-objective optimization problem since many variables and parameters must be optimized, including the spatial degree of freedom, rate, power allocation, and transmission technique. In this article, we review the basic properties of near-field communications and focus on the corresponding "resource allocation" problems. First, we identify available resources in near-field communication systems and highlight their distinctions from far-field communications. Then, we summarize optimization tools, such as numerical techniques and machine learning methods, for addressing near-field resource allocation, emphasizing their strengths and limitations. Finally, several important research directions of near-field communications are pointed out for further investigation.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) emerges as an efficient and promising technology for the next wireless generation networks and has attracted a lot of attention owing to the capability of extending wireless coverage by reflecting signals toward targeted receivers. In this paper, we consider a RIS-assisted high-speed train (HST) communication system to enhance wireless coverage and improve coverage probability. First, coverage performance of the downlink single-input-single-output system is investigated, and the closed-form expression of coverage probability is derived. Moreover, travel distance maximization problem is formulated to facilitate RIS discrete phase design and RIS placement optimization, which is subject to coverage probability constraint. Simulation results validate that better coverage performance and higher travel distance can be achieved with deployment of RIS. The impacts of some key system parameters including transmission power, signal-to-noise ratio threshold, number of RIS elements, number of RIS quantization bits, horizontal distance between base station and RIS, and speed of HST on system performance are investigated. In addition, it is found that RIS can well improve coverage probability with limited power consumption for HST communications.

Most DJSCC work considers discrete-time analog transmission, while combining it with orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) creates serious high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) problem. This paper conducts a comprehensive analysis on the use of various OFDM PAPR reduction techniques in the DJSCC system, including both conventional techniques such as clip**, companding, SLM and PTS, and deep learning-based PAPR reduction techniques such as PAPR loss and clip** with retraining. Our investigation shows that although conventional PAPR reduction techniques can be applied to DJSCC, their performance in DJSCC is different from the conventional split source channel coding. Moreover, we observe that for signal distortion PAPR reduction techniques, clip** with retraining achieves the best performance in terms of both PAPR reduction and recovery accuracy. It is also noticed that signal non-distortion PAPR reduction techniques can successfully reduce the PAPR in DJSCC without compromise to signal reconstruction.

Semantic communication (SemCom) holds promise for reducing network resource consumption while achieving the communications goal. However, the computational overheads in jointly training semantic encoders and decoders-and the subsequent deployment in network devices-are overlooked. Recent advances in Generative artificial intelligence (GAI) offer a potential solution. The robust learning abilities of GAI models indicate that semantic decoders can reconstruct source messages using a limited amount of semantic information, e.g., prompts, without joint training with the semantic encoder. A notable challenge, however, is the instability introduced by GAI's diverse generation ability. This instability, evident in outputs like text-generated images, limits the direct application of GAI in scenarios demanding accurate message recovery, such as face image transmission. To solve the above problems, this paper proposes a GAI-aided SemCom system with multi-model prompts for accurate content decoding. Moreover, in response to security concerns, we introduce the application of covert communications aided by a friendly jammer. The system jointly optimizes the diffusion step, jamming, and transmitting power with the aid of the generative diffusion models, enabling successful and secure transmission of the source messages.

Extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) is a promising technique to enable versatile applications for future wireless communications. To realize the huge potential performance gain, accurate channel state information is a fundamental technical prerequisite. In conventional massive MIMO, the channel is often modeled by the far-field planar-wavefront with rich sparsity in the angular domain that facilitates the design of low-complexity channel estimation. However, this sparsity is not conspicuous in XL-MIMO systems due to the non-negligible near-field spherical-wavefront. To address the inherent performance loss of the angular-domain channel estimation schemes, we first propose the polar-domain multiple residual dense network (P-MRDN) for XL-MIMO systems based on the polar-domain sparsity of the near-field channel by improving the existing MRDN scheme. Furthermore, a polar-domain multi-scale residual dense network (P-MSRDN) is designed to improve the channel estimation accuracy. Finally, simulation results reveal the superior performance of the proposed schemes compared with existing benchmark schemes and the minimal influence of the channel sparsity on the proposed schemes.

One technology that has the potential to improve wireless communications in years to come is integrated sensing and communication (ISAC). In this study, we take advantage of reconfigurable intelligent surface's (RIS) potential advantages to achieve ISAC while using the same frequency and resources. Specifically, by using the reflecting elements, the RIS dynamically modifies the radio waves' strength or phase in order to change the environment for radio transmission and increase the ISAC systems' transmission rate. We investigate a single cell downlink communication situation with RIS assistance. Combining the ISAC base station's (BS) beamforming with RIS's discrete phase shift optimization, while guaranteeing the sensing signal, The aim of optimizing the sum rate is specified. We take advantage of alternating maximization to find practical solutions with dividing the challenge into two minor issues. The first power allocation subproblem is non-convex that CVX solves by converting it to convex. A local search strategy is used to solve the second subproblem of phase shift optimization. Scalability is a major concern in implementing deep learning (DL) based methods in wireless communication systems. Given various channel reconstruction tasks, applying one DL model for one specific task is costly in both model training and model storage. In this paper, we propose a novel unsupervised deep plug-and-play prior method for three channel reconstruction tasks in the downlink of massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, including channel estimation, antenna extrapolation and channel state information (CSI) feedback. The proposed method corresponding to these three channel reconstruction tasks employs a common DL model, which greatly reduces the overhead of model training and storage. Unlike general multi-task learning, the DL model of the proposed method does not require further fine-tuning for specific channel reconstruction tasks. Extensive experiments are conducted on the DeepMIMO dataset to demonstrate the convergence, performance, and storage overhead of the proposed method for the three channel reconstruction tasks.

This paper investigates the system model and the transmit beamforming design for the Cell-Free massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system. The impact of the uncertainty of the target locations on the propagation of wireless signals is considered during both uplink and downlink phases, and especially, the main statistics of the MIMO channel estimation error are theoretically derived in the closed-form fashion. A fundamental performance metric, termed communication-sensing (C-S) region, is defined for the considered system via three cases, i.e., the sensing-only case, the communication-only case and the ISAC case. The transmit beamforming design problems for the three cases are respectively carried out through different reformulations, e.g., the Lagrangian dual transform and the quadratic fractional transform, and some combinations of the block coordinate descent method and the successive convex approximation method. Numerical results present a 3-dimensional C-S region with a dynamic number of access points to illustrate the trade-off between communication and radar sensing. The advantage for radar sensing of the Cell-Free massive MIMO system is also studied via a comparison with the traditional cellular system. Finally, the efficacy of the proposed beamforming scheme is validated in comparison with zero-forcing and maximum ratio transmission schemes.

Extremely large-scale multiple-input-multiple-output (XL-MIMO), which offers vast spatial degrees of freedom, has emerged as a potentially pivotal enabling technology for the sixth generation (6G) of wireless mobile networks. With its growing significance, both opportunities and challenges are concurrently manifesting. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of research on XL-MIMO wireless systems. In particular, we introduce four XL-MIMO hardware architectures: uniform linear array (ULA)-based XL-MIMO, uniform planar array (UPA)-based XL-MIMO utilizing either patch antennas or point antennas, and continuous aperture (CAP)-based XL-MIMO. We comprehensively analyze and discuss their characteristics and interrelationships. Following this, we introduce several electromagnetic characteristics and general distance boundaries in XL-MIMO. Given the distinct electromagnetic properties of near-field communications, we present a range of channel models to demonstrate the benefits of XL-MIMO. We further discuss and summarize signal processing schemes for XL-MIMO. It is worth noting that the low-complexity signal processing schemes and deep learning empowered signal processing schemes are reviewed and highlighted to promote the practical implementation of XL-MIMO. Furthermore, we explore the interplay between XL-MIMO and other emergent 6G technologies. Finally, we outline several compelling research directions for future XL-MIMO wireless communication systems.

Cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) and extremely large-scale MIMO (XL-MIMO) are regarded as promising innovations for the forthcoming generation of wireless communication systems. Their significant advantages in augmenting the number of degrees of freedom have garnered considerable interest. In this article, we first review the essential opportunities and challenges induced by XL-MIMO systems. We then propose the enhanced paradigm of cell-free XL-MIMO, which incorporates multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) to provide a distributed strategy for tackling the problem of high-dimension signal processing and costly energy consumption. Based on the unique near-field characteristics, we propose two categories of the low-complexity design, i.e., antenna selection and power control, to adapt to different cell-free XL-MIMO scenarios and achieve the maximum data rate. For inspiration, several critical future research directions pertaining to green cell-free XL-MIMO systems are presented.

Cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) are two promising technologies for realizing future beyond-fifth generation (B5G) networks. In this paper, we consider a practical spatially correlated RIS-aided CF massive MIMO system with multi-antenna access points (APs) over spatially correlated fading channels. Different from previous work, the electromagnetic interference (EMI) at RIS is considered to further characterize the system performance of the actual environment. Then, we derive the closed-form expression for the system spectral efficiency (SE) with the maximum ratio (MR) combining at the APs and the large-scale fading decoding (LSFD) at the central processing unit (CPU). Moreover, to counteract the near-far effect and EMI, we propose practical fractional power control (FPC) and max-min power control algorithms to further improve the system performance. We unveil the impact of EMI, channel correlations, and different signal processing methods on the uplink SE of user equipments (UEs). The accuracy of our derived analytical results is verified by extensive Monte-Carlo simulations. Our results show that the EMI can substantially degrade the SE, especially for those UEs with unsatisfactory channel conditions. Besides, increasing the number of RIS elements is always beneficial in terms of the SE, but with diminishing returns when the number of RIS elements is sufficiently large. Furthermore, the existence of spatial correlations among RIS elements can deteriorate the system performance when RIS is impaired by EMI.

The explosive growth of data results in more scarce spectrum resources. It is important to optimize the system performance under limited resources. In this paper, we investigate how to achieve weighted throughput (WTP) maximization for cell-free (CF) multiuser MIMO (MU-MIMO) multicarrier (MC) systems through resource allocation (RA), in the cases of finite blocklength (FBL) and infinite blocklength (INFBL) regimes. To ensure the quality of service (QoS) of each user, particularly for the block error rate (BLER) and latency in the FBL regime, the WTP gets maximized under the constraints of total power consumption and required QoS metrics. Since the channels vary in different subcarriers (SCs) and inter-user interference strengths, the WTP can be maximized by scheduling the best users in each time-frequency (TF) resource and advanced beamforming design, while the resources can be fully utilized. With this motivation, we propose a joint user scheduling (US) and beamforming design algorithm based on the successive convex approximation (SCA) and gene-aided (GA) algorithms, to address a mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed RA outperforms the comparison schemes. And the CF system in our scenario is capable of achieving higher spectral efficiency than the centralized antenna systems (CAS).

CANDECOMP/PARAFAC (CP) decomposition is the mostly used model to formulate the received tensor signal in a multi-domain massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, as the receiver generally sums the components from different paths or users. To achieve accurate and low-latency channel estimation, good and fast CP decomposition algorithms are desired. The CP alternating least squares (CPALS) is the workhorse algorithm for calculating the CP decomposition. However, its performance depends on the initializations, and good starting values can lead to more efficient solutions. Existing initialization strategies are decoupled from the CPALS and are not necessarily favorable for solving the CP decomposition. To enhance the algorithm's speed and accuracy, this paper proposes a deep-learning-aided CPALS (DL-CPALS) method that uses a deep neural network (DNN) to generate favorable initializations. The proposed DL-CPALS integrates the DNN and CPALS to a model-based deep learning paradigm, where it trains the DNN to generate an initialization that facilitates fast and accurate CP decomposition. Moreover, benefiting from the CP low-rankness, the proposed method is trained using noisy data and does not require paired clean data. The proposed DL-CPALS is applied to millimeter wave MIMO orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (mmWave MIMO-OFDM) channel estimation. Experimental results demonstrate the significant improvements of the proposed method in terms of both speed and accuracy for CP decomposition and channel estimation.

Extremely large-scale multiple-input-multipleoutput (XL-MIMO) has been reviewed as a promising technology for future sixth-generation (6G) networks to achieve higher performance. In practice, various linear precoding schemes, such as zero-forcing (ZF) and regularized ZF (RZF) precoding, are sufficient to achieve near-optimal performance in traditional massive MIMO (mMIMO) systems. It is critical to note that in large-scale antenna arrays the operation of channel matrix inversion poses a significant computational challenge for these precoders. Therefore, we explore several iterative methods for determining the precoding matrix for XL-MIMO systems instead of direct matrix inversion. Taking into account small- and large-scale fading as well as spatial correlation between antennas, we study their computational complexity and convergence rate. Furthermore, we propose the Jacobi-Preconditioning Conjugate Gradient (Jac-PCG) iterative inversion method, which enjoys a faster convergence speed than the CG method. Besides, the closed-form expression of spectral efficiency (SE) considering the interference between subarrays in downlink XL-MIMO systems is derived. In the numerical results, it is shown that the complexity given by the Jac-PCG algorithm has about 54% reduction than the traditional RZF algorithm at basically the same SE performance.

Semantic communication, an intelligent communication paradigm that aims to transmit useful information in the semantic domain, is facilitated by deep learning techniques. Robust semantic features can be learned and transmitted in an analog fashion, but it poses new challenges to hardware, protocol, and encryption. In this paper, we propose a digital semantic communication system, which consists of an encoding network deployed on a resource-limited device and a decoding network deployed at the edge. To acquire better semantic representation for digital transmission, a novel non-linear quantization module is proposed to efficiently quantize semantic features with trainable quantization levels. Additionally, structured pruning is incorporated to reduce the dimension of the transmitted features. We also introduce a semantic learning loss (SLL) function to reduce semantic error. To adapt to various channel conditions and inputs under constraints of communication and computing resources, a policy network is designed to adaptively choose the split point and the dimension of the transmitted semantic features. Experiments using the CIFAR-10 and ImageNet dataset for image classification are employed to evaluate the proposed digital semantic communication network, and ablation studies are conducted to assess the proposed quantization module, structured pruning and SLL.

Grant-free non-orthogonal multiple access has been regarded as a viable approach to accommodate access for a massive number of machine-type devices with small data packets. The sporadic activation of the devices creates a multiuser setup where it is suitable to use compressed sensing in order to detect the active devices and decode their data. We consider asynchronous access of machine-type devices that send data packets of different frame sizes, leading to data length diversity. We address the composite problem of activity detection, channel estimation, and data recovery by posing it as a structured sparse recovery, having three-level sparsity caused by sporadic activity, symbol delay, and data length diversity. We approach the problem through approximate message passing with a backward propagation algorithm (AMP-BP), tailored to exploit the sparsity, and in particular the data length diversity. Moreover, we unfold the proposed AMP-BP into a model-driven network, termed learned AMP-BP (LAMP-BP), which enhances detection performance. The results show that the proposed LAMP-BP outperforms existing methods in activity detection and data recovery accuracy.

In this paper, we investigate the uplink transmit power optimization problem in cell-free (CF) extremely large-scale multiple-input multiple-output (XL-MIMO) systems. Instead of applying the traditional methods, we propose two signal processing architectures: the centralized training and centralized execution with fuzzy logic as well as the centralized training and decentralized execution with fuzzy logic, respectively, which adopt the amalgamation of multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) and fuzzy logic to solve the design problem of power control for the maximization of the system spectral efficiency (SE). Furthermore, the uplink performance of the system adopting maximum ratio (MR) combining and local minimum mean-squared error (L-MMSE) combining is evaluated. Our results show that the proposed methods with fuzzy logic outperform the conventional MARL-based method and signal processing methods in terms of computational complexity. Also, the SE performance under MR combining is even better than that of the conventional MARL-based method.
