Max-pressure (MP) is a decentralized adaptive traffic signal control approach that has been shown to maximize throughput for private vehicles. However, MP-based signal control algorithms do not differentiate the movement of transit vehicles from private vehicles or between high and single-occupancy private vehicles. Prioritizing the movement of transit or other high occupancy vehicles (HOVs) is vital to reduce congestion and improve the reliability and efficiency of transit operations. This study proposes OCC-MP: a novel MP-based algorithm that considers both vehicle queues and passenger occupancies in computing the weights of movements. By weighing movements with higher passenger occupancies more heavily, transit and other HOVs are implicitly provided with priority, while accounting for any negative impacts of that priority on single occupancy vehicles. And, unlike rule-based transit signal priority (TSP) strategies, OCC-MP more naturally also accommodates conflicting transit routes at a signalized intersection and facilitates their movement, even in mixed traffic without dedicated lanes. Simulations on a grid network under varying demands and transit configurations demonstrate the effectiveness of OCC-MP at providing TSP while simultaneously reducing the negative impact imparted onto lower occupancy private vehicles. Furthermore, OCC-MP is shown to have a larger stable region for demand compared to rule-based TSP strategies integrated into the MP framework. The performance of OCC-MP is also shown to be robust to errors in passenger occupancy information from transit vehicles and can be applied when passenger occupancies of private vehicles are not available. Finally, OCC-MP can be applied in a partially connected vehicle (CV) environment when a subset of vehicles is able to provide information to the signal controller, outperforming baseline methods at low CV penetration rates.

As the demand for food surges and the agricultural sector undergoes a transformative shift towards sustainability and efficiency, the need for precise and proactive measures to ensure the health and welfare of livestock becomes paramount. In the context of the broader agricultural landscape outlined, the application of Hyperspectral Imaging (HSI) takes on profound significance. HSI has emerged as a cutting-edge, non-destructive technique for fast and accurate egg quality analysis, including the detection of chick embryo mortality. However, the high cost and operational complexity compared to conventional RGB imaging are significant bottlenecks in the widespread adoption of HSI technology. To overcome these hurdles and unlock the full potential of HSI, a promising solution is hyperspectral image reconstruction from standard RGB images. This study aims to reconstruct hyperspectral images from RGB images for non-destructive early prediction of chick embryo mortality. Firstly, the performance of different image reconstruction algorithms, such as HRNET, MST++, Restormer, and EDSR were compared to reconstruct the hyperspectral images of the eggs in the early incubation period. Later, the reconstructed spectra were used to differentiate live from dead chick-producing eggs using the XGBoost and Random Forest classification methods. Among the reconstruction methods, HRNET showed impressive reconstruction performance with MRAE of 0.0955, RMSE of 0.0159, and PSNR of 36.79 dB. This study motivated that harnessing imaging technology integrated with smart sensors and data analytics has the potential to improve automation, enhance biosecurity, and optimize resource management towards sustainable agriculture 4.0.

Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) has become a key technology for non-invasive quality evaluation in various fields, offering detailed insights through spatial and spectral data. Despite its efficacy, the complexity and high cost of HSI systems have hindered their widespread adoption. This study addressed these challenges by exploring deep learning-based hyperspectral image reconstruction from RGB (Red, Green, Blue) images, particularly for agricultural products. Specifically, different hyperspectral reconstruction algorithms, such as Hyperspectral Convolutional Neural Network - Dense (HSCNN-D), High-Resolution Network (HRNET), and Multi-Scale Transformer Plus Plus (MST++), were compared to assess the dry matter content of sweet potatoes. Among the tested reconstruction methods, HRNET demonstrated superior performance, achieving the lowest mean relative absolute error (MRAE) of 0.07, root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.03, and the highest peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of 32.28 decibels (dB). Some key features were selected using the genetic algorithm (GA), and their importance was interpreted using explainable artificial intelligence (XAI). Partial least squares regression (PLSR) models were developed using the RGB, reconstructed, and ground truth (GT) data. The visual and spectra quality of these reconstructed methods was compared with GT data, and predicted maps were generated. The results revealed the prospect of deep learning-based hyperspectral image reconstruction as a cost-effective and efficient quality assessment tool for agricultural and biological applications.

Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) has recently emerged as a promising tool for many agricultural applications; however, the technology cannot be directly used in a real-time system due to the extensive time needed to process large volumes of data. Consequently, the development of a simple, compact, and cost-effective imaging system is not possible with the current HSI systems. Therefore, the overall goal of this study was to reconstruct hyperspectral images from RGB images through deep learning for agricultural applications. Specifically, this study used Hyperspectral Convolutional Neural Network - Dense (HSCNN-D) to reconstruct hyperspectral images from RGB images for predicting soluble solid content (SSC) in sweet potatoes. The algorithm accurately reconstructed the hyperspectral images from RGB images, with the resulting spectra closely matching the ground-truth. The partial least squares regression (PLSR) model based on reconstructed spectra outperformed the model using the full spectral range, demonstrating its potential for SSC prediction in sweet potatoes. These findings highlight the potential of deep learning-based hyperspectral image reconstruction as a low-cost, efficient tool for various agricultural uses.

Nuclei instance segmentation is crucial in oncological diagnosis and cancer pathology research. H&E stained images are commonly used for medical diagnosis, but pre-processing is necessary before using them for image processing tasks. Two principal pre-processing methods are formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded samples (FFPE) and frozen tissue samples (FS). While FFPE is widely used, it is time-consuming, while FS samples can be processed quickly. Analyzing H&E stained images derived from fast sample preparation, staining, and scanning can pose difficulties due to the swift process, which can result in the degradation of image quality. This paper proposes a method that leverages the unique optical characteristics of H&E stained images. A three-branch U-Net architecture has been implemented, where each branch contributes to the final segmentation results. The process includes applying watershed algorithm to separate overlap** regions and enhance accuracy. The Triple U-Net architecture comprises an RGB branch, a Hematoxylin branch, and a Segmentation branch. This study focuses on a novel dataset named CryoNuSeg. The results obtained through robust experiments outperform the state-of-the-art results across various metrics. The benchmark score for this dataset is AJI 52.5 and PQ 47.7, achieved through the implementation of U-Net Architecture. However, the proposed Triple U-Net architecture achieves an AJI score of 67.41 and PQ of 50.56. The proposed architecture improves more on AJI than other evaluation metrics, which further justifies the superiority of the Triple U-Net architecture over the baseline U-Net model, as AJI is a more strict evaluation metric. The use of the three-branch U-Net model, followed by watershed post-processing, significantly surpasses the benchmark scores, showing substantial improvement in the AJI score

The heart is one of the most vital organs in the human body. It supplies blood and nutrients in other parts of the body. Therefore, maintaining a healthy heart is essential. As a heart disorder, arrhythmia is a condition in which the heart's pum** mechanism becomes aberrant. The Electrocardiogram is used to analyze the arrhythmia problem from the ECG signals because of its fewer difficulties and cheapness. The heart peaks shown in the ECG graph are used to detect heart diseases, and the R peak is used to analyze arrhythmia disease. Arrhythmia is grouped into two groups - Tachycardia and Bradycardia for detection. In this paper, we discussed many different techniques such as Deep CNNs, LSTM, SVM, NN classifier, Wavelet, TQWT, etc., that have been used for detecting arrhythmia using various datasets throughout the previous decade. This work shows the analysis of some arrhythmia classification on the ECG dataset. Here, Data preprocessing, feature extraction, classification processes were applied on most research work and achieved better performance for classifying ECG signals to detect arrhythmia. Automatic arrhythmia detection can help cardiologists make the right decisions immediately to save human life. In addition, this research presents various previous research limitations with some challenges in detecting arrhythmia that will help in future research.

The recent monkeypox outbreak has become a public health concern due to its rapid spread in more than 40 countries outside Africa. Clinical diagnosis of monkeypox in an early stage is challenging due to its similarity with chickenpox and measles. In cases where the confirmatory Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests are not readily available, computer-assisted detection of monkeypox lesions could be beneficial for surveillance and rapid identification of suspected cases. Deep learning methods have been found effective in the automated detection of skin lesions, provided that sufficient training examples are available. However, as of now, such datasets are not available for the monkeypox disease. In the current study, we first develop the ``Monkeypox Skin Lesion Dataset (MSLD)" consisting skin lesion images of monkeypox, chickenpox, and measles. The images are mainly collected from websites, news portals, and publicly accessible case reports. Data augmentation is used to increase the sample size, and a 3-fold cross-validation experiment is set up. In the next step, several pre-trained deep learning models, namely, VGG-16, ResNet50, and InceptionV3 are employed to classify monkeypox and other diseases. An ensemble of the three models is also developed. ResNet50 achieves the best overall accuracy of $82.96(\pm4.57\%)$, while VGG16 and the ensemble system achieved accuracies of $81.48(\pm6.87\%)$ and $79.26(\pm1.05\%)$, respectively. A prototype web-application is also developed as an online monkeypox screening tool. While the initial results on this limited dataset are promising, a larger demographically diverse dataset is required to further enhance the generalizability of these models.

Persistent coughs are a major symptom of respiratory-related diseases. Increasing research attention has been paid to detecting coughs using wearables, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Among all types of sensors utilized, microphone is most widely used to detect coughs. However, the intense power consumption needed to process audio signals hinders continuous audio-based cough detection on battery-limited commercial wearable products, such as earbuds. We present CoughTrigger, which utilizes a lower-power sensor, an inertial measurement unit (IMU), in earbuds as a cough detection activator to trigger a higher-power sensor for audio processing and classification. It is able to run all-the-time as a standby service with minimal battery consumption and trigger the audio-based cough detection when a candidate cough is detected from IMU. Besides, the use of IMU brings the benefit of improved specificity of cough detection. Experiments are conducted on 45 subjects and our IMU-based model achieved 0.77 AUC score under leave one subject out evaluation. We also validated its effectiveness on free-living data and through on-device implementation.

Cough is a major symptom of respiratory-related diseases. There exists a tremendous amount of work in detecting coughs from audio but there has been no effort to identify coughs from solely inertial measurement unit (IMU). Coughing causes motion across the whole body and especially on the neck and head. Therefore, head motion data during coughing captured by a head-worn IMU sensor could be leveraged to detect coughs using a template matching algorithm. In time series template matching problems, K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) combined with elastic distance measurement (esp. Dynamic Time War** (DTW)) achieves outstanding performance. However, it is often regarded as prohibitively time-consuming. Nearest Centroid Classifier is thereafter proposed. But the accuracy is comprised of only one centroid obtained for each class. Centroid-based Classifier performs clustering and averaging for each cluster, but requires manually setting the number of clusters. We propose a novel self-tuning multi-centroid template-matching algorithm, which can automatically adjust the number of clusters to balance accuracy and inference time. Through experiments conducted on synthetic datasets and a real-world earbud-based cough dataset, we demonstrate the superiority of our proposed algorithm and present the result of cough detection with a single accelerometer sensor on the earbuds platform.

As recurrent neural network (RNN) models are best suited for predicting sequential data. In this work, an RNN language model is trained using alternate batches from only monolingual English and Spanish data and the perplexity of the language model is computed. From the results, it is concluded that using alternate batches of monolingual data in training reduced the perplexity of a CS language model. The results were consistently improved using mean square error (MSE) in the output embeddings of RNN based language model. By combining both methods, perplexity is reduced from 299.63 to 80.38. The proposed methods were comparable to the language model fine tune with code-switch training data.

Climate change has been a common interest and the forefront of crucial political discussion and decision-making for many years. Shallow clouds play a significant role in understanding the Earth's climate, but they are challenging to interpret and represent in a climate model. By classifying these cloud structures, there is a better possibility of understanding the physical structures of the clouds, which would improve the climate model generation, resulting in a better prediction of climate change or forecasting weather update. Clouds organise in many forms, which makes it challenging to build traditional rule-based algorithms to separate cloud features. In this paper, classification of cloud organization patterns was performed using a new scaled-up version of Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) named as EfficientNet as the encoder and UNet as decoder where they worked as feature extractor and reconstructor of fine grained feature map and was used as a classifier, which will help experts to understand how clouds will shape the future climate. By using a segmentation model in a classification task, it was shown that with a good encoder alongside UNet, it is possible to obtain good performance from this dataset. Dice coefficient has been used for the final evaluation metric, which gave the score of 66.26\% and 66.02\% for public and private (test set) leaderboard on Kaggle competition respectively.

This paper studies a tensor-structured linear regression model with a scalar response variable and tensor-structured predictors, such that the regression parameters form a tensor of order $d$ (i.e., a $d$-fold multiway array) in $\mathbb{R}^{n_1 \times n_2 \times \cdots \times n_d}$. It focuses on the task of estimating the regression tensor from $m$ realizations of the response variable and the predictors where $m\ll n = \prod \nolimits_{i} n_i$. Despite the seeming ill-posedness of this problem, it can still be solved if the parameter tensor belongs to the space of sparse, low Tucker-rank tensors. Accordingly, the estimation procedure is posed as a non-convex optimization program over the space of sparse, low Tucker-rank tensors, and a tensor variant of projected gradient descent is proposed to solve the resulting non-convex problem. In addition, mathematical guarantees are provided that establish the proposed method linearly converges to an appropriate solution under a certain set of conditions. Further, an upper bound on sample complexity of tensor parameter estimation for the model under consideration is characterized for the special case when the individual (scalar) predictors independently draw values from a sub-Gaussian distribution. The sample complexity bound is shown to have a polylogarithmic dependence on $\bar{n} = \max \big\{n_i: i\in \{1,2,\ldots,d \} \big\}$ and, orderwise, it matches the bound one can obtain from a heuristic parameter counting argument. Finally, numerical experiments demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed tensor model and estimation method on a synthetic dataset and a collection of neuroimaging datasets pertaining to attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Specifically, the proposed method exhibits better sample complexities on both synthetic and real datasets, demonstrating the usefulness of the model and the method in settings where $n \gg m$.

Ultrasound Shear Wave Elastography (USWE) with conventional B-mode imaging demonstrates better performance in lesion segmentation and classification problems. In this article, we propose SHEAR-net, an end-to-end deep neural network, to reconstruct USWE images from tracked tissue displacement data at different time instants induced by a single acoustic radiation force (ARF) with 100% or 50% of the energy in conventional use. The SHEAR-net consists of a localizer called the S-net to first localize the lesion location and then uses recurrent layers to extract temporal correlations from wave patterns using different time frames, and finally, with an estimator, it reconstructs the shear modulus image from the concatenated outputs of S-net and recurrent layers. The network is trained with 800 simulation and a limited number of CIRS tissue mimicking phantom data and is optimized using a multi-task learning loss function where the tasks are: inclusion localization and modulus estimation. The efficacy of the proposed SHEAR-net is extensively evaluated both qualitatively and quantitatively on 125 test set of motion data obtained from simulation and CIRS phantoms. We show that the proposed approach consistently outperforms the current state-of-the-art method and achieves overall 4-5 dB improvement in PSNR and SNR. In addition, an average gain of 0.15 in DSC and SSIM values indicate that the SHEAR-net has a better inclusion coverage area and structural similarity of the two approaches. The proposed real-time deep learning based technique can accurately estimate shear modulus for a minimum tissue displacement of 0.5$μ$m and image multiple inclusions with a single push ARF.

The task of heart rate estimation using photoplethysmographic (PPG) signal is challenging due to the presence of various motion artifacts in the recorded signals. In this paper, a fast algorithm for heart rate estimation based on modified SPEctral subtraction scheme utilizing Composite Motion Artifacts Reference generation (SPECMAR) is proposed using two-channel PPG and three-axis accelerometer signals. First, the preliminary noise reduction is obtained by filtering unwanted frequency components from the recorded signals. Next, a composite motion artifacts reference generation method is developed to be employed in the proposed SPECMAR algorithm for motion artifacts reduction. The heart rate is then computed from the noise and motion artifacts reduced PPG signal. Finally, a heart rate tracking algorithm is proposed considering neighboring estimates. The performance of the SPECMAR algorithm has been tested on publicly available PPG database. The average heart rate estimation error is found to be 2.09 BPM on 23 recordings. The Pearson correlation is 0.9907. Due to low computational complexity, the method is faster than the comparing methods. The low estimation error, smooth and fast heart rate tracking makes SPECMAR an ideal choice to be implemented in wearable devices.
