The proliferation of 5G technology presents an unprecedented challenge in managing the energy consumption of densely deployed network infrastructures, particularly Base Stations (BSs), which account for the majority of power usage in mobile networks. The O-RAN architecture, with its emphasis on open and intelligent design, offers a promising framework to address the Energy Efficiency (EE) demands of modern telecommunication systems. This paper introduces two xApps designed for the O-RAN architecture to optimize power savings without compromising the Quality of Service (QoS). Utilizing a commercial RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) simulator, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed xApps through extensive simulations that reflect real-world operational conditions. Our results show a significant reduction in power consumption, achieving up to 50% power savings with a minimal number of User Equipments (UEs), by intelligently managing the operational state of Radio Cards (RCs), particularly through switching between active and sleep modes based on network resource block usage conditions.

Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) emerges as a prime solution for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) trajectory planning, offering proficiency in navigating high-dimensional spaces, adaptability to dynamic environments, and making sequential decisions based on real-time feedback. Despite these advantages, the use of DRL for UAV trajectory planning requires significant retraining when the UAV is confronted with a new environment, resulting in wasted resources and time. Therefore, it is essential to develop techniques that can reduce the overhead of retraining DRL models, enabling them to adapt to constantly changing environments. This paper presents a novel method to reduce the need for extensive retraining using a double deep Q network (DDQN) model as a pretrained base, which is subsequently adapted to different urban environments through Continuous Transfer Learning (CTL). Our method involves transferring the learned model weights and adapting the learning parameters, including the learning and exploration rates, to suit each new environment specific characteristics. The effectiveness of our approach is validated in three scenarios, each with different levels of similarity. CTL significantly improves learning speed and success rates compared to DDQN models initiated from scratch. For similar environments, Transfer Learning (TL) improved stability, accelerated convergence by 65%, and facilitated 35% faster adaptation in dissimilar settings.

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) is a key enabler for next-generation transportation systems. However, in an urban city scenario, mmWave is highly susceptible to blockages and shadowing. Therefore, base station (BS) placement is a crucial task in the infrastructure design where coverage requirements need to be met while simultaneously supporting localisation. This work assumes a pre-deployed BS and another BS is required to be added to support both localisation accuracy and coverage rate in an urban city scenario. To solve this complex multi-objective optimisation problem, we utilise deep reinforcement learning (DRL). Concretely, this work proposes: 1) a three-layered grid for state representation as the input of the DRL, which enables it to adapt to the changes in the wireless environment represented by changing the position of the pre-deployed BS, and 2) the design of a suitable reward function for the DRL agent to solve the multi-objective problem. Numerical analysis shows that the proposed deep Q-network (DQN) model can learn/adapt from the complex radio environment represented by the terrain map and provides the same/similar solution to the exhaustive search, which is used as a benchmark. In addition, we show that an exclusive optimisation of coverage rate does not result in improved localisation accuracy, and thus there is a trade-off between the two solutions.

The connectivity-aware path design is crucial in the effective deployment of autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Recently, Reinforcement Learning (RL) algorithms have become the popular approach to solving this type of complex problem, but RL algorithms suffer slow convergence. In this paper, we propose a Transfer Learning (TL) approach, where we use a teacher policy previously trained in an old domain to boost the path learning of the agent in the new domain. As the exploration processes and the training continue, the agent refines the path design in the new domain based on the subsequent interactions with the environment. We evaluate our approach considering an old domain at sub-6 GHz and a new domain at millimeter Wave (mmWave). The teacher path policy, previously trained at sub-6 GHz path, is the solution to a connectivity-aware path problem that we formulate as a constrained Markov Decision Process (CMDP). We employ a Lyapunov-based model-free Deep Q-Network (DQN) to solve the path design at sub-6 GHz that guarantees connectivity constraint satisfaction. We empirically demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach for different urban environment scenarios. The results demonstrate that our proposed approach is capable of reducing the training time considerably at mmWave.

The choice of the transmitting frequency to provide cellular-connected Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) reliable connectivity and mobility support introduce several challenges. Conventional sub-6 GHz networks are optimized for ground Users (UEs). Operating at the millimeter Wave (mmWave) band would provide high-capacity but highly intermittent links. To reach the destination while minimizing a weighted function of traveling time and number of radio failures, we propose in this paper a UAV joint trajectory and band switch approach. By leveraging Double Deep Q-Learning we develop two different approaches to learn a trajectory besides managing the band switch. A first blind approach switches the band along the trajectory anytime the UAV-UE throughput is below a predefined threshold. In addition, we propose a smart approach for simultaneous learning-based path planning of UAV and band switch. The two approaches are compared with an optimal band switch strategy in terms of radio failure and band switches for different thresholds. Results reveal that the smart approach is able in a high threshold regime to reduce the number of radio failures and band switches while reaching the desired destination.

In this paper, cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (C-NOMA) is considered in short packet communications with finite blocklength (FBL) codes. The performance of a decode-and-forward (DF) relaying along with selection combining (SC) and maximum ratio combining (MRC) strategies at the receiver side is examined. We explore joint user pairing and resource allocation to maximize fair throughput in a downlink (DL) scenario. In each pair, the user with a stronger channel (strong user) acts as a relay for the other one (weak user), and optimal power and blocklength are allocated to achieve max-min throughput. To this end, first, only one pair is considered, and optimal resource allocation is explored. Also, a suboptimal algorithm is suggested, which converges to a near-optimal solution. Finally, the problem is extended to a general scenario, and a suboptimal C-NOMA-based user pairing is proposed. Numerical results show that the proposed C-NOMA scheme in both SC and MRC strategies significantly improves the users' fair throughput compared to the NOMA and OMA. It is also investigated that the proposed pairing scheme based on C-NOMA outperforms the Hybrid NOMA/OMA scheme from the average throughput perspective, while the fairness index degrades slightly.

In this study, machine learning methods of artificial neural networks (ANNs), least squares support vector machines (LSSVM), and neuro-fuzzy are used for advancing prediction models for the thermal performance of a photovoltaic-thermal solar collector (PV/T). In the proposed models, the inlet temperature, flow rate, heat, solar radiation, and the sun heat have been considered as the inputs variables. Data set has been extracted through experimental measurements from a novel solar collector system. Different analyses are performed to examine the credibility of the introduced approaches and evaluate their performance. The proposed LSSVM model outperformed ANFIS and ANNs models. LSSVM model is reported suitable when the laboratory measurements are costly and time-consuming, or achieving such values requires sophisticated interpretations.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) aided wireless networks have been recently envisioned as a solution to provide a reliable, low latency cellular link for search and rescue operations over the sea. We propose three different network architectures, based on the technology deployed on the UAV: a flying relay, a flying Base Station (BS) and a flying Remote Radio Head (RRH). We describe the challenges and highlight the benefits of the proposed architectures from the perspective of search and rescue operations over the sea. We compare the performance in term of data rate and latency, analyzing different solutions to provide a Backhaul (BH)/Fronthaul (FH) link for long coverage over the sea. Results show that a system architecture is not outperforming over the others. A cost function is thus indicated as a tool to find a suboptimal solution.

We consider a binary hypothesis testing problem in an inhomogeneous wireless sensor network, where a fusion center (FC) makes a global decision on the underlying hypothesis. We assume sensors observations are correlated Gaussian and sensors are unaware of this correlation when making decisions. Sensors send their modulated decisions over fading channels, subject to individual and/or total transmit power constraints. For parallel-access channel (PAC) and multiple-access channel (MAC) models, we derive modified deflection coefficient (MDC) of the test statistic at the FC with coherent reception. We propose a transmit power allocation scheme, which maximizes MDC of the test statistic, under three different sets of transmit power constraints: total power constraint, individual and total power constraints, individual power constraints only. When analytical solutions to our constrained optimization problems are elusive, we discuss how these problems can be converted to convex ones. We study how correlation among sensors observations, reliability of local decisions, communication channel model and channel qualities and transmit power constraints affect the reliability of the global decision and power allocation of inhomogeneous sensors.
