Condition monitoring of industrial systems is crucial for ensuring safety and maintenance planning, yet notable challenges arise in real-world settings due to the limited or non-existent availability of fault samples. This paper introduces an innovative solution to this problem by proposing a new method for fault detection and condition monitoring for unseen data. Adopting an approach inspired by zero-shot learning, our method can identify faults and assign a relative health index to various operational conditions. Typically, we have plenty of data on normal operations, some data on compromised conditions, and very few (if any) samples of severe faults. We use a variational autoencoder to capture the probabilistic distribution of previously seen and new unseen conditions. The health status is determined by comparing each sample's deviation from a normal operation reference distribution in the latent space. Faults are detected by establishing a threshold for the health indexes, allowing the model to identify severe, unseen faults with high accuracy, even amidst noise. We validate our approach using the run-to-failure IMS-bearing dataset and compare it with other methods. The health indexes generated by our model closely match the established descriptive model of bearing wear, attesting to the robustness and reliability of our method. These findings highlight the potential of our methodology in augmenting fault detection capabilities within industrial domains, thereby contributing to heightened safety protocols and optimized maintenance practices.

Condition monitoring plays a significant role in the safety and reliability of modern industrial systems. Artificial intelligence (AI) approaches are gaining attention from academia and industry as a growing subject in industrial applications and as a powerful way of identifying faults. This paper provides an overview of intelligent condition monitoring and fault detection and diagnosis methods for industrial plants with a focus on the open-source benchmark Tennessee Eastman Process (TEP). In this survey, the most popular and state-of-the-art deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML) algorithms for industrial plant condition monitoring, fault detection, and diagnosis are summarized and the advantages and disadvantages of each algorithm are studied. Challenges like imbalanced data, unlabelled samples and how deep learning models can handle them are also covered. Finally, a comparison of the accuracies and specifications of different algorithms utilizing the Tennessee Eastman Process (TEP) is conducted. This research will be beneficial for both researchers who are new to the field and experts, as it covers the literature on condition monitoring and state-of-the-art methods alongside the challenges and possible solutions to them.

The Auto-ICell system, a novel, and cost-effective integrated droplet microfluidic system, is introduced for real-time analysis of single-cell morphology and apoptosis. This system integrates a 3D-printed microfluidic chip with image analysis algorithms, enabling the generation of uniform droplet reactors and immediate image analysis. The system employs a color-based image analysis algorithm in the bright field for droplet content analysis. Meanwhile, in the fluorescence field, cell apoptosis is quantitatively measured through a combination of deep-learning-enabled multiple fluorescent channel analysis and a live/dead cell stain kit. Breast cancer cells are encapsulated within uniform droplets, with diameters ranging from 70 μm to 240 μm, generated at a high throughput of 1,500 droplets per minute. Real-time image analysis results are displayed within 2 seconds on a custom graphical user interface (GUI). The system provides an automatic calculation of the distribution and ratio of encapsulated dyes in the bright field, and in the fluorescent field, cell blebbing and cell circularity are observed and quantified respectively. The Auto-ICell system is non-invasive and provides online detection, offering a robust, time-efficient, user-friendly, and cost-effective solution for single-cell analysis. It significantly enhances the detection throughput of droplet single-cell analysis by reducing setup costs and improving operational performance. This study highlights the potential of the Auto-ICell system in advancing biological research and personalized disease treatment, with promising applications in cell culture, biochemical microreactors, drug carriers, cell-based assays, synthetic biology, and point-of-care diagnostics.

Blinding eye diseases are often correlated with altered retinal morphology, which can be clinically identified by segmenting retinal structures in fundus images. However, current methodologies often fall short in accurately segmenting delicate vessels. Although deep learning has shown promise in medical image segmentation, its reliance on repeated convolution and pooling operations can hinder the representation of edge information, ultimately limiting overall segmentation accuracy. In this paper, we propose a lightweight pixel-level CNN named LMBiS-Net for the segmentation of retinal vessels with an exceptionally low number of learnable parameters \textbf{(only 0.172 M)}. The network used multipath feature extraction blocks and incorporates bidirectional skip connections for the information flow between the encoder and decoder. Additionally, we have optimized the efficiency of the model by carefully selecting the number of filters to avoid filter overlap. This optimization significantly reduces training time and enhances computational efficiency. To assess the robustness and generalizability of LMBiS-Net, we performed comprehensive evaluations on various aspects of retinal images. Specifically, the model was subjected to rigorous tests to accurately segment retinal vessels, which play a vital role in ophthalmological diagnosis and treatment. By focusing on the retinal blood vessels, we were able to thoroughly analyze the performance and effectiveness of the LMBiS-Net model. The results of our tests demonstrate that LMBiS-Net is not only robust and generalizable but also capable of maintaining high levels of segmentation accuracy. These characteristics highlight the potential of LMBiS-Net as an efficient tool for high-speed and accurate segmentation of retinal images in various clinical applications.

Time Series Classification (TSC) is an important and challenging task for many visual computing applications. Despite the extensive range of methods developed for TSC, relatively few utilized Deep Neural Networks (DNNs). In this paper, we propose two novel attention blocks (Global Temporal Attention and Temporal Pseudo-Gaussian augmented Self-Attention) that can enhance deep learning-based TSC approaches, even when such approaches are designed and optimized for a specific dataset or task. We validate this claim by evaluating multiple state-of-the-art deep learning-based TSC models on the University of East Anglia (UEA) benchmark, a standardized collection of 30 Multivariate Time Series Classification (MTSC) datasets. We show that adding the proposed attention blocks improves base models' average accuracy by up to 3.6%. Additionally, the proposed TPS block uses a new injection module to include the relative positional information in transformers. As a standalone unit with less computational complexity, it enables TPS to perform better than most of the state-of-the-art DNN-based TSC methods. The source codes for our experimental setups and proposed attention blocks are made publicly available.

This paper summarizes an investigation around millimeter-wave (mmWave) multimode circular antenna array based beamformer capable of specially encoded data transmission in a wide coverage area. The circular antenna array is capable of an entire 360 deg. azimuth sector coverage where broadcast, uni-cast and multi-cast radio transmissions are possible. Orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode transmission along the elevation axis, i.e., perpendicular to the azimuth plane, can also be achieved. These two types of spatially encoded beamforming makes coverage in almost an entire hemisphere possible. The circular array is developed using twelve multilayer patch antennas with unique radiation performance aiding in both azimuth and elevation radiation. The proposed array architecture and its radiation performance makes it a good candidate for spatially encoded beamforming for mmWave 5G.

This paper investigates multi-mode and orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode data transmission techniques by a using a circular antenna array, operating at 28 GHz. The classical mode excitation of the latter is modified such that in the horizontal plane the antenna array operates as multimode transmitter (i.e., it provides broad- , uni- and/or multi-cast transmission), while in the vertical direction OAM transmission occurs: this dual-functionality by a single antenna-array at 28 GHz is presented for the first time. Specifically, it can transmit/receive in either broad-, uni-, multi-cast mode in the horizontal plane and also, it is capable of generating up to 15 spatially orthogonal OAM modes in the vertical direction. The proposed circular array is designed using twelve, low-complexity, multi-layer microstrip patch antennas with high radiation efficiency. It was tested through full electromagnetic analysis in terms of impedance matching, mutual coupling and radiation pattern. It was, also, fabricated and measured: good agreement between simulated and measurement results was observed. The proposed antenna array is perfect candidate for high spectral efficiency data transmission for 5G and beyond wireless applications.

Towards realizing an intelligent networked society, enabling low-cost low-energy connectivity for things, also known as Internet of Things (IoT), is of crucial importance. While the existing wireless access networks require centralized signaling for managing network resources, this approach is of less interest for future generations of wireless networks due to the energy consumption in such signaling and the expected increase in the number of IoT devices. Then, in this work we investigate leveraging machine learning for distributed control of IoT communications. Towards this end, first we investigate low-complex learning schemes which are applicable to resource-constrained IoT communications. Then, we propose a lightweight learning scheme which enables the IoT devices to adapt their communication parameters to the environment. Further, we investigate analytical expressions presenting performance of a centralized control scheme for adapting communication parameters of IoT devices, and compare the results with the results from the proposed distributed learning approach. The simulation results confirm that the reliability and energy efficiency of IoT communications could be significantly improved by leveraging the proposed learning approach.

New constraints based on practical hardware are introduced in compressive sensing (CS) based rectangular antenna array thinning technique. In a standard CS array sparsity enforcement, antenna elements are considered as ideal point sources which do not comply with the practical hardware. It also does not consider the impact of mutual coupling of neighbouring antenna elements on the impedance mismatch. In this work, we propose a combination of constraints based on physical antenna array specifications, mutual coupling and practical antenna element radiation performance in the CS-based array thinning enforcement. Analytical modelling along with a design example is presented and discussed. Array performance based on full-wave electromagnetic simulations shows the reliability of the proposed approach.

In this paper, a novel objective evaluation metric for image fusion is presented. Remarkable and attractive points of the proposed metric are that it has no parameter, the result is probability in the range of [0, 1] and it is free from illumination dependence. This metric is easy to implement and the result is computed in four steps: (1) Smoothing the images using Gaussian filter. (2) Transforming images to a vector field using Del operator. (3) Computing the normal distribution function (μ,σ) for each corresponding pixel, and converting to the standard normal distribution function. (4) Computing the probability of being well-behaved fusion method as the result. To judge the quality of the proposed metric, it is compared to thirteen well-known non-reference objective evaluation metrics, where eight fusion methods are employed on seven experiments of multimodal medical images. The experimental results and statistical comparisons show that in contrast to the previously objective evaluation metrics the proposed one performs better in terms of both agreeing with human visual perception and evaluating fusion methods that are not performed at the same level.

This work demonstrates the sensitivity of lens antenna arrays operating at millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequencies. Considering a Rotman lens array in receive mode, our investigation focuses on its most imperative defect: aberration of electromagnetic (EM) energy. Aberration leads to spillover of electric fields to neighboring ports, reducing the lens' ability to focus the EM energy to a desired port. With full EM simulations, we design a 28 GHz, 13 beam and 13 array port Rotman lens array to characterize its performance with the aforementioned impairment. Our findings show that the impact of aberration is more pronounced when the beam angles are close to the array end-fire. More critically, the corresponding impact of aberration on the desired signal and interference powers is also investigated for an uplink multiuser cellular system operating at 28 GHz. The presented results can be used as a reference to re-calibrate our expectations for Rotman lens arrays at mmWave frequencies.
