As the services and requirements of next-generation wireless networks become increasingly diversified, it is estimated that the current frequency bands of mobile network operators (MNOs) will be unable to cope with the immensity of anticipated demands. Due to spectrum scarcity, there has been a growing trend among stakeholders toward identifying practical solutions to make the most productive use of the exclusively allocated bands on a shared basis through spectrum sharing mechanisms. However, due to the technical complexities of these mechanisms, their design presents challenges, as it requires coordination among multiple entities. To address this challenge, in this paper, we begin with a detailed review of the recent literature on spectrum sharing methods, classifying them on the basis of their operational frequency regime that is, whether they are implemented to operate in licensed bands (e.g., licensed shared access (LSA), spectrum access system (SAS), and dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS)) or unlicensed bands (e.g., LTE-unlicensed (LTE-U), licensed assisted access (LAA), MulteFire, and new radio-unlicensed (NR-U)). Then, in order to narrow the gap between the standardization and vendor-specific implementations, we provide a detailed review of the potential implementation scenarios and necessary amendments to legacy cellular networks from the perspective of telecom vendors and regulatory bodies. Next, we analyze applications of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques for facilitating spectrum sharing mechanisms and leveraging the full potential of autonomous sharing scenarios. Finally, we conclude the paper by presenting open research challenges, which aim to provide insights into prospective research endeavors.

This paper investigates the problem of age of information (AoI) aware radio resource management for a platooning system. Multiple autonomous platoons exploit the cellular wireless vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) communication technology to disseminate the cooperative awareness messages (CAMs) to their followers while ensuring timely delivery of safety-critical messages to the Road-Side Unit (RSU). Due to the challenges of dynamic channel conditions, centralized resource management schemes that require global information are inefficient and lead to large signaling overheads. Hence, we exploit a distributed resource allocation framework based on multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL), where each platoon leader (PL) acts as an agent and interacts with the environment to learn its optimal policy. Existing MARL algorithms consider a holistic reward function for the group's collective success, which often ends up with unsatisfactory results and cannot guarantee an optimal policy for each agent. Consequently, motivated by the existing literature in RL, we propose a novel MARL framework that trains two critics with the following goals: A global critic which estimates the global expected reward and motivates the agents toward a cooperating behavior and an exclusive local critic for each agent that estimates the local individual reward. Furthermore, based on the tasks each agent has to accomplish, the individual reward of each agent is decomposed into multiple sub-reward functions where task-wise value functions are learned separately. Numerical results indicate our proposed algorithm's effectiveness compared with the conventional RL methods applied in this area.

This paper summarizes an investigation around millimeter-wave (mmWave) multimode circular antenna array based beamformer capable of specially encoded data transmission in a wide coverage area. The circular antenna array is capable of an entire 360 deg. azimuth sector coverage where broadcast, uni-cast and multi-cast radio transmissions are possible. Orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode transmission along the elevation axis, i.e., perpendicular to the azimuth plane, can also be achieved. These two types of spatially encoded beamforming makes coverage in almost an entire hemisphere possible. The circular array is developed using twelve multilayer patch antennas with unique radiation performance aiding in both azimuth and elevation radiation. The proposed array architecture and its radiation performance makes it a good candidate for spatially encoded beamforming for mmWave 5G.

This paper investigates multi-mode and orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode data transmission techniques by a using a circular antenna array, operating at 28 GHz. The classical mode excitation of the latter is modified such that in the horizontal plane the antenna array operates as multimode transmitter (i.e., it provides broad- , uni- and/or multi-cast transmission), while in the vertical direction OAM transmission occurs: this dual-functionality by a single antenna-array at 28 GHz is presented for the first time. Specifically, it can transmit/receive in either broad-, uni-, multi-cast mode in the horizontal plane and also, it is capable of generating up to 15 spatially orthogonal OAM modes in the vertical direction. The proposed circular array is designed using twelve, low-complexity, multi-layer microstrip patch antennas with high radiation efficiency. It was tested through full electromagnetic analysis in terms of impedance matching, mutual coupling and radiation pattern. It was, also, fabricated and measured: good agreement between simulated and measurement results was observed. The proposed antenna array is perfect candidate for high spectral efficiency data transmission for 5G and beyond wireless applications.

New constraints based on practical hardware are introduced in compressive sensing (CS) based rectangular antenna array thinning technique. In a standard CS array sparsity enforcement, antenna elements are considered as ideal point sources which do not comply with the practical hardware. It also does not consider the impact of mutual coupling of neighbouring antenna elements on the impedance mismatch. In this work, we propose a combination of constraints based on physical antenna array specifications, mutual coupling and practical antenna element radiation performance in the CS-based array thinning enforcement. Analytical modelling along with a design example is presented and discussed. Array performance based on full-wave electromagnetic simulations shows the reliability of the proposed approach.

This work demonstrates the sensitivity of lens antenna arrays operating at millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequencies. Considering a Rotman lens array in receive mode, our investigation focuses on its most imperative defect: aberration of electromagnetic (EM) energy. Aberration leads to spillover of electric fields to neighboring ports, reducing the lens' ability to focus the EM energy to a desired port. With full EM simulations, we design a 28 GHz, 13 beam and 13 array port Rotman lens array to characterize its performance with the aforementioned impairment. Our findings show that the impact of aberration is more pronounced when the beam angles are close to the array end-fire. More critically, the corresponding impact of aberration on the desired signal and interference powers is also investigated for an uplink multiuser cellular system operating at 28 GHz. The presented results can be used as a reference to re-calibrate our expectations for Rotman lens arrays at mmWave frequencies.
