This paper studies the effect of antitrust enforcement on venture capital (VC) investments and VC-backed companies. To establish causality, I exploit the DOJ's decision to close several antitrust field offices in 2013, which reduced the antitrust enforcement in areas near the closed offices. I find that the reduction in antitrust enforcement causes a significant decrease in VC investments in startups located in the affected areas. Furthermore, these affected VC-backed startups exhibit a reduced likelihood of successful exits and diminished innovation performance. These negative results are mainly driven by startups in concentrated industries, where incumbents tend to engage in anticompetitive behaviors more frequently. To mitigate the adverse effect, startups should innovate more to differentiate their products. This paper sheds light on the importance of local antitrust enforcement in fostering competition and innovation.

Realized ecosystem services (ES) are the actual use of ES by societies, which is more directly linked to human well-being than potential ES. However, there is a lack of a general analysis framework to understand how much ES was realized. In this study, we first proposed a Supply-Demand-Flow-Use (SDFU) framework that integrates the supply, demand, flow, and use of ES and differentiates these concepts into different aspects (e.g., potential vs. actual ES demand, export and import flows of supply, etc.). Then, we applied the framework to three examples of ES that can be found in typical urban green parks (i.e., wild berry supply, pollination, and recreation). We showed how the framework could assess the actual use of ES and identify the supply-limited, demand-limited, and supply-demand-balanced types of realized ES. We also discussed the scaling features, temporal dynamics, and spatial characteristics of realized ES, as well as some critical questions for future studies. Although facing challenges, we believe that the applications of the SDFU framework can provide a systematic way to accurately assess the actual use of ES and better inform management and policy-making for sustainable use of nature's benefits. Therefore, we hope that our study will stimulate more research on realized ES and contribute to a deeper understanding of their roles in enhancing human well-being.

To estimate the causal effects of beliefs on actions, researchers often run information provision experiments. We consider the causal interpretation of two-stage least squares (TSLS) estimators in these experiments. We characterize common TSLS estimators as weighted averages of causal effects, and interpret these weights under general belief updating conditions that nest parametric models from the literature. Our framework accommodates TSLS estimators for both passive and active control designs. Notably, we find that some passive control estimators allow for negative weights, which compromises their causal interpretation. We give practical guidance on such issues, and illustrate our results in two empirical applications.

Social media use data is widely being used in health, psychology, and marketing research to analyze human behavior. However, we have very limited knowledge on social media use among American Indians. In this context, this study was designed to assess preferences and perceptions of social media use among American Indians during COVID-19. We collected data from American Indians in South Dakota using online survey. Results show that Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat are the most preferred social media platforms. Most of the participants reported that the use of social media increased tremendously during COVID-19 and had perceptions of more negative effects than positive effects. Hate/harassment/extremism, misinformation/made up news, and people getting one point of view were the top reasons for negative effects.

Their prior valuations are independently and identically distributed. Each bidder may observe an independently and identically distributed signal about her prior valuation. The seller knows the distribution of the prior valuation profile and knows that signals are independently and identically distributed, but does not know the signal distribution. In addition, the seller knows that bidders play undominated strategies. I find that a second-price auction with a random reserve maximizes the worst-case expected revenue over all possible signal distributions and all equilibria in undominated strategies.

I consider a mechanism design problem of selling multiple goods to multiple bidders when the designer has minimal amount of information. I assume that the designer only knows the upper bounds of bidders' values for each good and has no additional distributional information. The designer takes a minimax regret approach. The expected regret from a mechanism given a joint distribution over value profiles and an equilibrium is defined as the difference between the full surplus and the expected revenue. The designer seeks a mechanism, referred to as a minimax regret mechanism, that minimizes her worst-case expected regret across all possible joint distributions over value profiles and all equilibria. I find that a separate second-price auction with random reserves is a minimax regret mechanism for general upper bounds. Under this mechanism, the designer holds a separate auction for each good; the formats of these auctions are second-price auctions with random reserves.

Advances in estimating heterogeneous treatment effects enable firms to personalize marketing mix elements and target individuals at an unmatched level of granularity, but feasibility constraints limit such personalization. In practice, firms choose which unique treatments to offer and which individuals to offer these treatments with the goal of maximizing profits: we call this the coarse personalization problem. We propose a two-step solution that makes segmentation and targeting decisions in concert. First, the firm personalizes by estimating conditional average treatment effects. Second, the firm discretizes by utilizing treatment effects to choose which unique treatments to offer and who to assign to these treatments. We show that a combination of available machine learning tools for estimating heterogeneous treatment effects and a novel application of optimal transport methods provides a viable and efficient solution. With data from a large-scale field experiment for promotions management, we find that our methodology outperforms extant approaches that segment on consumer characteristics or preferences and those that only search over a prespecified grid. Using our procedure, the firm recoups over 99.5% of its expected incremental profits under fully granular personalization while offering only five unique treatments. We conclude by discussing how coarse personalization arises in other domains.

We study the mechanism design problem of selling a public good to a group of agents by a principal in the correlated private value environment. We assume the principal only knows the expectations of the agents' values, but does not know the joint distribution of the values. The principal evaluates a mechanism by the worst-case expected revenue over joint distributions that are consistent with the known expectations. We characterize maxmin public good mechanisms among dominant-strategy incentive compatible and ex-post individually rational mechanisms for the two-agent case and for a special $N$-agent ($N>2$) case.

I construct a novel random double auction as a robust bilateral trading mechanism for a profit-maximizing intermediary who facilitates trade between a buyer and a seller. It works as follows. The intermediary publicly commits to charging a fixed commission fee and randomly drawing a spread from a uniform distribution. Then the buyer submits a bid price and the seller submits an ask price simultaneously. If the difference between the bid price and the ask price is greater than the realized spread, then the asset is transacted at the midpoint price, and each pays the intermediary half of the fixed commission fee. Otherwise, no trade takes place, and no one pays or receives anything. I show that the random double auction maximizes the worst-case expected profit across all dominant-strategy incentive compatible and ex-post individually rational mechanisms for the symmetric case. I also construct a robust trading mechanism with similar properties for the asymmetric case.

I study the design of auctions in which the auctioneer is assumed to have information only about the marginal distribution of a generic bidder's valuation, but does not know the correlation structure of the joint distribution of bidders' valuations. I assume that a generic bidder's valuation is bounded and $\bar{v}$ is the maximum valuation of a generic bidder. The performance of a mechanism is evaluated in the worst case over the uncertainty of joint distributions that are consistent with the marginal distribution. For the two-bidder case, the second-price auction with the uniformly distributed random reserve maximizes the worst-case expected revenue across all dominant-strategy mechanisms under certain regularity conditions. For the $N$-bidder ($N\ge3$) case, the second-price auction with the $\bar{v}-$scaled $Beta (\frac{1}{N-1},1)$ distributed random reserve maximizes the worst-case expected revenue across standard (a bidder whose bid is not the highest will never be allocated) dominant-strategy mechanisms under certain regularity conditions. When the probability mass condition (part of the regularity conditions) does not hold, the second-price auction with the $s^*-$scaled $Beta (\frac{1}{N-1},1)$ distributed random reserve maximizes the worst-case expected revenue across standard dominant-strategy mechanisms, where $s^*\in (0,\bar{v})$.

Considering the risk aversion for gains and the risk seeking for losses of venture capitalists, the TODIM has been chosen as the decision-making method. Moreover, group decision is an available way to avoid the limited ability and knowledge etc. of venture capitalists.Simultaneously, venture capitalists may be hesitant among several assessed values with different probabilities to express their real perceptionbecause of the uncertain decision-making environment. However, the probabilistic hesitant fuzzy information can solve such problems effectively. Therefore, the TODIM has been extended to probabilistic hesitant fuzzy circumstance for the sake of settling the decision-making problem of venture capitalists in this paper. Moreover, due to the uncertain investment environment, the criteria weights are considered as probabilistic hesitant fuzzyinformation as well. Then, a case study has been used to verify the feasibility and validity of the proposed TODIM.Also, the TODIM with hesitant fuzzy information has been carried out to analysis the same case. From the comparative analysis, the superiority of the proposed TODIM in this paper has already appeared.

Crowdfunding is gradually becoming a modern marketing pattern. By noting that the success of crowdfunding depends on network externalities, our research aims to utilize them to provide an applicable referral mechanism in a crowdfunding-based marketing pattern. In the context of network externalities, measuring the value of leading customers is chosen as the key to co** with the research problem by considering that leading customers take a critical stance in forming a referral network. Accordingly, two sequential-move game models (i.e., basic model and extended model) were established to measure the value of leading customers, and a skill of matrix transformation was adopted to solve the model by transforming a complicated multi-sequence game into a simple simultaneous-move game. Based on the defined value of leading customers, a network-based referral mechanism was proposed by exploring exactly how many awards are allocated along the customer sequence to encourage the leading customers' actions of successful recommendation and by demonstrating two general rules of awarding the referrals in our model setting. Moreover, the proposed solution approach helps deepen an understanding of the effect of the leading position, which is meaningful for designing more numerous referral approaches.
