The study is motivated by structural discrete choice models that use the control function methodology to correct for endogeneity bias. In this scenario, the first stage estimates the control function using some frequentist parametric or nonparametric approach. The structural equation in the second stage, associated with certain complicated likelihood functions, can be more conveniently dealt with using a Bayesian approach. This paper studies the asymptotic properties of the quasi-posterior distributions obtained from the second stage. We prove that the corresponding quasi-Bayesian credible set does not have the desired coverage in large samples. Nonetheless, the quasi-Bayesian point estimator remains consistent and is asymptotically equivalent to a frequentist two-stage estimator. Double Robust Bayesian Inference on Average Treatment Effects

Our robust Bayesian approach involves two important modifications: first, we adjust the prior distributions of the conditional mean function; second, we correct the posterior distribution of the resulting ATE. Both adjustments make use of pilot estimators motivated by the semiparametric influence function for ATE estimation. We prove asymptotic equivalence of our Bayesian procedure and efficient frequentist ATE estimators by establishing a new semiparametric Bernstein-von Mises theorem under double robustness; i.e., the lack of smoothness of conditional mean functions can be compensated by high regularity of the propensity score and vice versa. Consequently, the resulting Bayesian credible sets form confidence intervals with asymptotically exact coverage probability. In simulations, our double robust Bayesian procedure leads to significant bias reduction of point estimation over conventional Bayesian methods and more accurate coverage of confidence intervals compared to existing frequentist methods. To arrive at this conclusion, they constructed predicted mortality as an instrumental variable based on the WHO international disease interventions to analyse this problem. I replicate the process of their research and eliminate some biases in their estimate. In addition, and more importantly, we argue that the construction of their instrumental variable contains a violation of the exclusion restriction of their instrumental variable. This negative correlation between health improvement and income growth still lacks an accurate causal explanation, according to which the instrumental variable they constructed increases reverse causality bias instead of eliminating it. △ Less

Market Design for Tradable Mobility Credits

This paper proposes and analyzes alternative market models for a TMC system -- focusing on market design aspects such as allocation/expiration of tokens, rules governing trading, transaction fees, and regulator intervention -- and develops a methodology to explicitly model the dis-aggregate behavior of individuals within the market. Extensive simulation experiments are conducted within a combined mode and departure time context for the morning commute problem to compare the performance of the alternative designs relative to congestion pricing and a no-control scenario. The simulation experiments employ a day-to-day assignment framework wherein transportation demand is modeled using a logit-mixture model with income effects and supply is modeled using a standard bottleneck model. The results indicate that small fixed transaction fees can effectively mitigate undesirable behavior in the market without a significant loss in efficiency (total welfare) whereas proportional transaction fees are less effective both in terms of efficiency and in avoiding undesirable market behavior. Further, an allocation of tokens in continuous time can be beneficial in dealing with non-recurrent events and avoiding concentrated trading activity. In the presence of income effects, despite small fixed transaction fees, the TMC system yields a marginally higher social welfare than congestion pricing while attaining revenue neutrality. Further, it is more robust in the presence of forecasting errors and non-recurrent events due to the adaptiveness of the market. Finally, as expected, the TMC scheme is more equitable (when revenues from congestion pricing are not redistributed) although it is not guaranteed to be Pareto-improving when tokens are distributed equally. △ Less

Statistical Inference on Partially Linear Panel Model under Unobserved Linearity

When compared to existing methods… ▽ More A new statistical procedure, based on a modified spline basis, is proposed to identify the linear components in the panel data model with fixed effects. Under some mild assumptions, the proposed procedure is shown to consistently estimate the underlying regression function, correctly select the linear components, and effectively conduct the statistical inference. When compared to existing methods for detection of linearity in the panel model, our approach is demonstrated to be theoretically justified as well as practically convenient. We provide a computational algorithm that implements the proposed procedure along with a path-based solution method for linearity detection, which avoids the burden of selecting the tuning parameter for the penalty term. Monte Carlo simulations are conducted to examine the finite sample performance of our proposed procedure with detailed findings that confirm our theoretical results in the paper. Applications to Aggregate Production and Environmental Kuznets Curve data also illustrate the necessity for detecting linearity in the partially linear panel model. △ Less
