The current body of research on terahertz (THz) wireless communications predominantly focuses on its application for single-user backhaul/fronthaul connectivity at sub-THz frequencies. First, we develop a generalized statistical model for signal propagation at THz frequencies encompassing physical layer impairments, including random path-loss with Gamma distribution for the molecular absorption coefficient, short-term fading characterized by the $α$-$η$-$κ$-$μ$ distribution, antenna misalignment errors, and transceiver hardware impairments. Next, we propose random access protocols for a cell-free wireless network, ensuring successful transmission for multiple users with limited delay and energy loss, exploiting the combined effect of random atmospheric absorption, non-linearity of fading, hardware impairments, and antenna misalignment errors. We consider two schemes: a fixed transmission probability (FTP) scheme where the transmission probability (TP) of each user is updated at the beginning of the data transmission and an adaptive transmission probability (ATP) scheme where the TP is updated with each successful reception of the data. We analyze the performance of both protocols using delay, energy consumption, and outage probability with scaling laws for the transmission of a data frame consisting of a single packet from users at a predefined quality of service (QoS).

Transceiver hardware impairment (THI) is inevitable for high-date rate terahertz (THz) communication. Existing statistical analysis either neglects THI's effect or provides approximate results when analyzing the performance of the THz system combined with channel fading and antenna misalignment. In this paper, we develop exact analytical expressions for the average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), ergodic capacity, and average bit-error-rate (BER) performance of a THz wireless link under the combined effect of $α$-$μ$ fading channel, zero-boresight pointing errors, and the Gaussian distributed THI. We also derive asymptotic expressions for the outage probability and average BER, which shows that the diversity order of the THz link is independent of THI's parameters. Simulations validate the derived analytical results and demonstrate the impact of the THI parameters on the THz performance.

Single aperture reception for underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) is insufficient to deal with oceanic turbulence caused by the combined effect of temperature gradient and air bubbles. This paper analyzes the performance of multi-aperture reception for UWOC under channel irradiance fluctuations characterized by the mixture exponential generalized gamma (EGG) distribution. We analyze the system performance by employing both selection combining (SC) and maximum ratio combining (MRC) receivers. In particular, we derive the exact outage probability expression for the SC-based multi-aperture UWOC receiver and obtain an upper bound on the outage probability for the MRC-based multi-aperture UWOC receiver. With the help of the derived results, we analytically obtain the diversity order of the considered multi-aperture UWOC system.

Existing research works on reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) based terahertz (THz) system ignores the effect of phase noise and employ the zero-boresight pointing errors model of the free-space optics channel in performance analysis. In this paper, we analyze the performance of RIS-THz transmission under the combined effect of channel fading, THz pointing error (TPE), and statistical phase noise due to imperfect phase compensation at each RIS element. First, we derive statistical results of the double $α$-$μ$ fading combined with the TPE and phase noise at individual RIS elements using single-variate Fox's function. Next, we use the multi-variate Fox's H-function representation to develop exact analytical expressions for the density and distribution functions of the resultant signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the RIS-THz link considering the accumulating propagation effect from all RIS elements. Using the derived statistical results, we analyze the exact and asymptotic expressions for the considered system's outage probability and average bit-error rate (BER). The analytical results show that the diversity order of the system is independent of phase noise, depends on the channel fading parameters $α$ and $μ$, and depends on the $β$ parameter of the TPE.

The $α$-$η$-$κ$-$μ$ is one of the most generalized and flexible channel models having an excellent fit to experimental data from diverse propagation environments. The existing statistical results on the envelope of $α$-$η$-$κ$-$μ$ model contain an infinite series involving regularized hypergeometric function and generalized Laguerre polynomial, prohibiting its widespread application in the performance analysis of wireless systems. In this paper, we employ a novel approach to derive density and distribution functions of the envelope of the $α$-$η$-$κ$-$μ$ fading channel without an infinite series approximation. The derived statistical results are presented using a single Fox's H-function for tractable performance analysis and efficient numerical computations, especially for high-frequency mmWave and terahertz wireless transmissions. To gain insight into the distribution of channel envelope, we develop an asymptotic analysis using a more straightforward Gamma function converging to the exact within a reasonable range of channel parameters. To further substantiate the proposed analysis, we present the exact outage probability and average bit-error-rate (BER) performance of a wireless link subjected to the $α$-$η$-$κ$-$μ$ fading model using a single tri-variate Fox's H-function. We obtain the diversity order of the system by analyzing the outage probability at a high signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio. We use numerical and simulation analysis to demonstrate the significance of the developed statistical results compared with the existing infinite series representation for the envelope of the $α$-$η$-$κ$-$μ$ model.

Recent research provides an approximation on the performance for reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted systems over generalized fading channels with phase noise resulting from imperfect phase compensation at the RIS. In this paper, we developed exact analysis and upper bounds on the performance of RIS-assisted vehicular communication system considering phase noise with mobility over asymmetric fading channels by coherently combining received signals reflected by RIS elements and direct transmissions from the source terminal. Multihop relaying is a potential technique to mitigate channel impairments in optical wireless communications (OWC). In this paper, multiple fixed-gain amplify-and-forward (AF) relays are employed to enhance the OWC performance under the combined effect of atmospheric turbulence, pointing errors, and fog. We consider a long-range OWC link by modeling the atmospheric turbulence by the Fisher-Snedecor ${\cal{F}}$ distribution, pointing errors by the generalized non-zero boresight model, and random path loss due to fog. We also consider a short-range OWC system by ignoring the impact of atmospheric turbulence. We derive novel upper bounds on the probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for both short and long-range multihop OWC systems by develo** exact statistical results for a single-hop OWC system under the combined effect of ${\cal{F}}$-turbulence channels, non-zero boresight pointing errors, and fog-induced fading. Based on these expressions, we present analytical expressions of outage probability (OP) and average bit-error-rate (ABER) performance for the considered OWC systems involving single-variate Fox's H and Meijer's G functions. Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is an excellent use case for line-of-sight (LOS) based technologies such as free-space optical (FSO) communications. In this paper, we analyze the performance of RIS-empowered FSO (RISE-FSO) systems by unifying Fisher-Snedecor (F), Gamma-Gamma (GG), and Malaga (M) distributions for atmospheric turbulence with zero-boresight pointing errors over deterministic as well as random path-loss in foggy conditions with heterodyne detection (HD) and intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) methods. By deriving the probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the direct-link (DL) with the statistical effect of atmospheric turbulence, pointing errors, and random fog, we develop exact expressions of PDF and CDF of the resultant channel for the RISE-FSO system. Using the derived statistical results, we present exact expressions of outage probability, average bit-error-rate (BER), ergodic capacity, and moments of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for both DL-FSO and RISE-FSO systems. We also develop an asymptotic analysis of the outage probability and average BER and derive the diversity order of the considered systems. We validate the analytical expressions using Monte-Carlo simulations and demonstrate the performance scaling of the FSO system with the number of RIS elements for various turbulence channels, detection techniques, and weather conditions.

Optical wireless communication (OWC) over atmospheric turbulence and pointing errors is a well-studied topic. Still, there is limited research on signal fading due to random fog in an outdoor environment for terrestrial wireless communications. In this paper, we analyze the performance of a decode-and-forward (DF) relaying under the combined effect of random fog, pointing errors, and atmospheric turbulence with a negligible line-of-sight (LOS) direct link. We consider a generalized model for the end-to-end channel with independent and not identically distributed (i.ni.d.) pointing errors, random fog with Gamma distributed attenuation coefficient, double generalized gamma (DGG) atmospheric turbulence, and asymmetrical distance between the source and destination. We develop density and distribution functions of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) under the combined effect of random fog, pointing errors, and atmospheric turbulence (FPT) channel and distribution function for the combined channel with random fog and pointing errors (FP). Using the derived statistical results, we present analytical expressions of the outage probability, average SNR, ergodic rate, and average bit error rate (BER) for both FP and FPT channels in terms of OWC system parameters. We also develop simplified and asymptotic performance analysis to provide insight on the system behavior analytically under various practically relevant scenarios. We demonstrate the mutual effects of channel impairments and pointing errors on the OWC performance, and show that the relaying system provides significant performance improvement compared with the direct transmissions, especially when pointing errors and fog becomes more pronounced.

In this paper, we analyze the performance of a dual-hop THz-RF wireless system where an AP facilitates data transmission between a core network and user equipment (UE). We consider a generalized model for the end-to-end channel with an independent and not identically distributed (i.ni.d.) fading model for THz and RF links using the $α$-$μ$ distribution, the THz link with pointing errors, and asymmetrical relay position. We derive a closed-form expression of the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the end-to-end signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the THz-RF link, which is valid for continuous values of $μ$ for a generalized performance analysis over THz fading channels. Using the derived CDF, we analyze the performance of the THz-RF relayed system using decode-and-forward (DF) protocol by deriving analytical expressions of diversity order, moments of SNR, ergodic capacity, and average BER in terms of system parameters. We also analyze the considered system with an i.i.d. model and develop simplified performance to provide insight on the system behavior analytically under various practically relevant scenarios. Simulation and numerical analysis show a significant effect of fading parameters of the THz link and a nominal effect of normalized beam-width on the performance of the relay-assisted THz-RF system.

The use of Terahertz (THz) frequency bands for data transmissions between the core network and an access point can be promising for next generation wireless systems. In this paper, we analyze the performance of a dual-hop relaying for THz-RF wireless link for backhaul applications. Considering the $α-μ$ fading channel and a statistical model of pointing errors, we derive a novel closed-form expression of the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the THz link, which is also valid for non-integer values of $μ$. Using the CDF, we derive analytical expressions of the end-to-end SNR and lower bound on ergodic capacity of a decode-and-forward (DF) assisted THz-RF relaying in terms of system parameters. Using analytical results of the direct link and computer simulations, we demonstrate that the THz-RF relaying is a viable technology for wireless backhaul, providing a significant increase of almost $25 \%$ in the spectral efficiency, compared to the direct transmissions.

Channel allocation is the task of assigning channels to users such that some objective (e.g., sum-rate) is maximized. In centralized networks such as cellular networks, this task is carried by the base station which gathers the channel state information (CSI) from the users and computes the optimal solution. In distributed networks such as ad-hoc and device-to-device (D2D) networks, no base station exists and conveying global CSI between users is costly or simply impractical. When the CSI is time varying and unknown to the users, the users face the challenge of both learning the channel statistics online and converge to a good channel allocation. This introduces a multi-armed bandit (MAB) scenario with multiple decision makers. If two users or more choose the same channel, a collision occurs and they all receive zero reward. We propose a distributed channel allocation algorithm that each user runs and converges to the optimal allocation while achieving an order optimal regret of O\left(\log T\right). The algorithm is based on a carrier sensing multiple access (CSMA) implementation of the distributed auction algorithm. It does not require any exchange of information between users. Users need only to observe a single channel at a time and sense if there is a transmission on that channel, without decoding the transmissions or identifying the transmitting users. We demonstrate the performance of our algorithm using simulated LTE and 5G channels.

Energy consumption is a major limitation of low power and mobile devices. Efficient transmission protocols are required to minimize an energy consumption of the mobile devices for ubiquitous connectivity in the next generation wireless networks. Opportunistic schemes select a single relay using the criteria of the best channel and achieve a near-optimal diversity performance in a cooperative wireless system. In this paper, we study the energy efficiency of the opportunistic schemes for device-to-device communication. In the opportunistic approach, an energy consumed by devices is minimized by selecting a single neighboring device as a relay using the criteria of minimum consumed energy in each transmission in the uplink of a wireless network. We derive analytical bounds and scaling laws on the expected energy consumption when the devices experience log-normal shadowing with respect to a base station considering both the transmission as well as circuit energy consumptions. We show that the protocol improves the energy efficiency of the network comparing to the direct transmission even if only a few devices are considered for relaying. We also demonstrate the effectiveness of the protocol by means of simulations in realistic scenarios of the wireless network.

Signal processing played an important role in improving the quality of communications over copper cables in earlier DSL technologies. Even more powerful signal processing techniques are required to enable a gigabit per second data rate in the upcoming G.fast standard. This new standard is different from its predecessors in many respects. In particular, G.fast will use a significantly higher bandwidth. At such a high bandwidth, crosstalk between different lines in a binder will reach unprecedented levels, which are beyond the capabilities of most efficient techniques for interference mitigation. In this article, we survey the state of the art and research challenges in the design of signal processing algorithms for the G.fast system, with a focus on novel research approaches and design considerations for efficient interference mitigation in G.fast systems. We also detail relevant VDSL techniques and points out their strengths and limitations for the G.fast system.

Design of energy efficient protocols for modern wireless systems has become an important area of research. In this paper, we propose a distributed optimization algorithm for the channel assignment problem for multiple interfering transceiver pairs that cannot communicate with each other. We first modify the auction algorithm for maximal energy efficiency and show that the problem can be solved without explicit message passing using the carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) protocols. We then develop a novel scheme by converting the channel assignment problem into perfect matchings on bipartite graphs. The proposed scheme improves the energy efficiency and does not require any explicit message passing or a shared memory between the users. We derive bounds on the convergence rate and show that the proposed algorithm converges faster than the distributed auction algorithm and achieves near-optimal performance under Rayleigh fading channels. We also present an asymptotic performance analysis of the fast matching algorithm for energy efficient resource allocation and prove the optimality for large enough number of users and number of channels. Finally, we provide numerical assessments that confirm the energy efficiency gains compared to the state of the art.
