This paper investigates the shift in crowdsourcing towards self-managed enterprises of crowdworkers (SMECs), diverging from traditional platform-controlled models. It reviews the literature to understand the foundational aspects of this shift, focusing on identifying key factors that may explain the rise of SMECs, particularly concerning power dynamics and tensions between Online Labor Platforms (OLPs) and crowdworkers. The study aims to guide future research and inform policy and platform development, emphasizing the importance of fair labor practices in this evolving landscape.

Context: While most research shows positive effects of gamification, the focus on its adverse effects is considerably smaller and further understanding is needed. Objective: To provide a comprehensive overview on research reporting negative effects of game design elements and to provide insights into the awareness of developers on these effects and into how they could be considered in practice. Method: We conducted a systematic map** study of the negative effects of game design elements on education/learning systems. We also held a focus group discussion with developers of a gamified software, discussing the map** study results with regard to their awareness and perceptions on the reported negative effects in practice. Results: The map** study revealed 87 papers reporting undesired effects of game design elements. We found that badges, leaderboards, competitions, and points are the game design elements most often reported as causing negative effects. The most cited negative effects were lack of effect, worsened performance, motivational issues, lack of understanding, and irrelevance. The ethical issues of gaming the system and cheating were also often reported. As part of our results, we map the relations between game design elements and the negative effects that they may cause. The focus group revealed that developers were not aware of many of the possible negative effects and that they consider this type of information useful. The discussion revealed their agreement on some of those potential negative effects and also some positive counterparts. Conclusions: Gamification, when properly applied, can have positive effects on education/learning software. However, gamified software is also prone to generate harmful effects. Revealing and discussing potentially negative effects can help to make more informed decisions considering their trade-off with respect to the expected benefits.

Future wireless applications such as high definition video streaming, wireless cloud radio access networks, and cellular data offload are bandwidth-hungry, which highlights the need for Wi-Fi links exceeding 1 Gb/s. This article discusses coding schemes and, in particular, the use of Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes as Forward Error Correction (FEC) in future Wi-Fi standards. Moreover, we consider advanced design strategies such as root-check LDPC structures, computer-aided design for short blocks and high-performance decoding algorithms with low latency. We then conclude the article with a discussion of FEC challenges for future Wi-FI applications.

In this work, we propose structured Root-Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes and design techniques for block-fading channels. In particular, Quasi-Cyclic Root-LDPC codes, Irregular repeat-accumulate Root-LDPC codes and Controlled Do** Root-LDPC codes based on Progressive Edge Growth (PEG) techniques for block-fading channels are proposed. The proposed Root-LDPC codes are both suitable for channels under $F = 2, 3$ and $4$ independent fading per codeword. The performance of the proposed codes is investigated in terms of Frame Error Rate (FER). The proposed Root-LDPC codes are capable of achieving the channel diversity and outperform standard LDPC codes. For block-fading channel with $F = 2$ our proposed PEG-based Root-LDPC codes outperform PEG-based LDPC codes by $7.5$dB at a FER close to $10^{-3}$.

We propose iterative detection and decoding (IDD) algorithms with Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes for Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems operating in block-fading and fast Rayleigh fading channels. Soft-input soft-output minimum mean-square error receivers with successive interference cancellation are considered. In particular, we devise a novel strategy to improve the bit error rate (BER) performance of IDD schemes, which takes into account the soft \textit{a posteriori} output of the decoder in a block-fading channel when Root-Check LDPC codes are used. A MIMO IDD receiver with soft information processing that exploits the code structure and the behavior of the log likelihood ratios is also developed. Moreover, we present a scheduling algorithm for decoding LDPC codes in block-fading channels. Simulations show that the proposed techniques result in significant gains in terms of BER for both block-fading and fast-fading channels.

We propose an Iterative Detection and Decoding (IDD) scheme with Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes for Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) systems for block-fading $F = 2$ and fast fading Rayleigh channels. An IDD receiver with soft information processing that exploits the code structure and the behaviour of the log likelihood ratios (LLR)'s is developed. Minimum Mean Square Error (MMSE) with Successive Interference Cancellation (SIC) and with Parallel Interference Cancellation (PIC) schemes are considered. The soft \textit{a posteriori} output of the decoder in a block-fading channel with Root-Check LDPC codes has allowed us to create a new strategy to improve the Bit Error Rate (BER) of a MIMO IDD scheme. Our proposed strategy in some scenarios has resulted in up to 3dB of gain in terms of BER for block-fading channels and up to 1dB in fast fading channels.
