Many modern manufacturing companies have evolved from a single production site to a multi-factory production environment that must handle both geographically dispersed production orders and their multi-site production steps. The availability of a range of machines in different locations capable of performing the same operation and ship** times between factories have transformed planning systems from the classic Job Shop Scheduling Problem (JSSP) to Distributed Flexible Job Shop Scheduling Problem (DFJSP). As a result, the complexity of production planning has increased significantly. In our work, we use Quantum Annealing (QA) to solve the DFJSP. In addition to the assignment of production orders to production sites, the assignment of production steps to production sites also takes place. This requirement is based on a real use case of a wool textile manufacturer. To investigate the applicability of this method to large problem instances, problems ranging from 50 variables up to 250 variables, the largest problem that could be embedded into a D-Wave quantum annealer Quantum Processing Unit (QPU), are formulated and solved. Special attention is dedicated to the determination of the Lagrange parameters of the Quadratic Unconstrained Binary Optimization (QUBO) model and the QPU configuration parameters, as these factors can significantly impact solution quality. The obtained solutions are compared to solutions obtained by Simulated Annealing (SA), both in terms of solution quality and calculation time. The results demonstrate that QA has the potential to solve large problem instances specific to the industry.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can cause cognitive, communication, and psychological challenges that profoundly limit independence in everyday life. Conversational Agents (CAs) can provide individuals with TBI with cognitive and communication support, although little is known about how they make use of CAs to address injury-related needs. In this study, we gave nine adults with TBI an at-home CA for four weeks to investigate use patterns, challenges, and design requirements, focusing particularly on injury-related use. The findings revealed significant gaps between the current capabilities of CAs and accessibility challenges faced by TBI users. We also identified 14 TBI-related activities that participants engaged in with CAs. We categorized those activities into four groups: mental health, cognitive activities, healthcare and rehabilitation, and routine activities. Design implications focus on accessibility improvements and functional designs of CAs that can better support the day-to-day needs of people with TBI.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can result in chronic sensorimotor, cognitive, psychosocial, and communication challenges that can limit social participation. Social media can be a useful outlet for social participation for individuals with TBI, but there are barriers to access. While research has drawn attention to the nature of access barriers, few studies have investigated technological solutions to address these barriers, particularly considering the perspectives of individuals with TBI. To address this gap in knowledge, we used a participatory approach to engage 10 adults with TBI in conceptualizing tools to address their challenges accessing Facebook. Participants described multifaceted challenges in using social media, including interface overload, social comparisons, and anxiety over self-presentation and communication after injury. They discussed their needs and preferences and generated ideas for design solutions. Our work contributes to designing assistive and accessibility technology to facilitate an equal access to the benefits of social media for individuals with TBI.

A Comparison of I/O-Efficient Algorithms for Visibility Computation on Massive Grid Terrains

Given a grid terrain T and a viewpoint v, the viewshed of v is the set of grid points of T that are visible from v. To decide whether a point p is visible one needs to interpolate the elevation of the terrain along the line-of-sight vp. Existing viewshed algorithms differ widely in what points they chose to interpolate and how they interpolate the terrain. These choices crucially affect the running time and accuracy of the algorithms. This paper describes I/O-efficient algorithms for computing visibility maps in a couple of different models.
First, we describe two algorithms that sweep the terrain by rotating a ray around the viewpoint while maintaining the terrain profile along the ray. Second, we describe an algorithm which sweeps the terrain centrifugally, growing a star-shaped region around the viewpoint while maintaining the approximate visible horizon of the terrain within the swept region. Our last two algorithms are based on computing and merging horizons. All algorithms are I/O-efficient in the I/O-model of Aggarwal and Vitter. We present an experimental analysis on large terrains obtained from NASA SRTM data. All our algorithms are scalable to volumes of data that are over 50 times larger than main memory. Our main finding is that, in practice, horizons are significantly smaller than their theoretical worst case bound, which makes horizon-based approaches very fast. Our last two algorithms, which compute the most accurate viewshed, turn out to be very fast in practice, although their worst-case bound is inferior.
