Purpose: Common to most MRSI techniques, the spatial resolution and the minimal scan duration of Deuterium Metabolic Imaging (DMI) are limited by the achievable SNR. This work presents a deep learning method for sensitivity enhancement of DMI.
Methods: A convolutional neural network (CNN) was designed to estimate the 2H-labeled metabolite concentrations from low SNR and distorted DMI FIDs. The CNN was trained with synthetic data that represent a range of SNR levels typically encountered in vivo. The estimation precision was further improved by fine-tuning the CNN with MRI-based edge-preserving regularization for each DMI dataset. The proposed processing method, PReserved Edge ConvolutIonal neural network for Sensitivity Enhanced DMI (PRECISE-DMI), was applied to simulation studies and in vivo experiments to evaluate the anticipated improvements in SNR and investigate the potential for inaccuracies.
Results: PRECISE-DMI visually improved the metabolic maps of low SNR datasets, and quantitatively provided higher precision than the standard Fourier reconstruction. Processing of DMI data acquired in rat brain tumor models resulted in more precise determination of 2H-labeled lactate and glutamate + glutamine levels, at increased spatial resolution (from >8 to 2 $μ$L) or shortened scan time (from 32 to 4 min) compared to standard acquisitions. However, rigorous SD-bias analyses showed that overuse of the edge-preserving regularization can compromise the accuracy of the results.
Conclusion: PRECISE-DMI allows a flexible trade-off between enhancing the sensitivity of DMI and minimizing the inaccuracies. With typical settings, the DMI sensitivity can be improved by 3-fold while retaining the capability to detect local signal variations.

To safely deploy deep learning models in the clinic, a quality assurance framework is needed for routine or continuous monitoring of input-domain shift and the models' performance without ground truth contours. In this work, cardiac substructure segmentation was used as an example task to establish a QA framework. A benchmark dataset consisting of Computed Tomography (CT) images along with manual cardiac delineations of 241 patients were collected, including one 'common' image domain and five 'uncommon' domains. Segmentation models were tested on the benchmark dataset for an initial evaluation of model capacity and limitations. An image domain shift detector was developed by utilizing a trained Denoising autoencoder (DAE) and two hand-engineered features. Another Variational Autoencoder (VAE) was also trained to estimate the shape quality of the auto-segmentation results. Using the extracted features from the image/segmentation pair as inputs, a regression model was trained to predict the per-patient segmentation accuracy, measured by Dice coefficient similarity (DSC). The framework was tested across 19 segmentation models to evaluate the generalizability of the entire framework.
As results, the predicted DSC of regression models achieved a mean absolute error (MAE) ranging from 0.036 to 0.046 with an averaged MAE of 0.041. When tested on the benchmark dataset, the performances of all segmentation models were not significantly affected by scanning parameters: FOV, slice thickness and reconstructions kernels. For input images with Poisson noise, CNN-based segmentation models demonstrated a decreased DSC ranging from 0.07 to 0.41, while the transformer-based model was not significantly affected.

Edge computing is changing the face of many industries and services. Common edge computing models offload computing which is prone to security risks and privacy violation. However, advances in deep learning enabled Internet of Things (IoTs) to take decisions and run cognitive tasks locally. This research introduces a decentralized-control edge model where most computation and decisions are moved to the IoT level. The model aims at decreasing communication to the edge which in return enhances efficiency and decreases latency. The model also avoids data transfer which raises security and privacy risks. To examine the model, we developed SAFEMYRIDES, a scene-aware ridesharing monitoring system where smart phones are detecting violations at the runtime. Current real-time monitoring systems are costly and require continuous network connectivity. The system uses optimized deep learning that run locally on IoTs to detect violations in ridesharing and record violation incidences. The system would enhance safety and security in ridesharing without violating privacy.

Cognitive Computing (COC) aims to build highly cognitive machines with low computational resources that respond in real-time. However, scholarly literature shows varying research areas and various interpretations of COC. This calls for a cohesive architecture that delineates the nature of COC. We argue that if Herbert Simon considered the design science is the science of artificial, cognitive systems are the products of cognitive science or 'the newest science of the artificial'. Therefore, building a conceptual basis for COC is an essential step into prospective cognitive computing-based systems. This paper proposes an architecture of COC through analyzing the literature on COC using a myriad of statistical analysis methods. Then, we compare the statistical analysis results with previous qualitative analysis results to confirm our findings. The study also comprehensively surveys the recent research on COC to identify the state of the art and connect the advances in varied research disciplines in COC. The study found that there are three underlaying computing paradigms, Von-Neuman, Neuromorphic Engineering and Quantum Computing, that comprehensively complement the structure of cognitive computation. The research discuss possible applications and open research directions under the COC umbrella.

Ontologies have been known for their semantic representation of knowledge. ontologies cannot automatically evolve to reflect updates that occur in respective domains. To address this limitation, researchers have called for automatic ontology generation from unstructured text corpus. Unfortunately, systems that aim to generate ontologies from unstructured text corpus are domain-specific and require manual intervention. In addition, they suffer from uncertainty in creating concept linkages and difficulty in finding axioms for the same concept. Knowledge Graphs (KGs) has emerged as a powerful model for the dynamic representation of knowledge. However, KGs have many quality limitations and need extensive refinement. This research aims to develop a novel domain-independent automatic ontology generation framework that converts unstructured text corpus into domain consistent ontological form. The framework generates KGs from unstructured text corpus as well as refine and correct them to be consistent with domain ontologies. The power of the proposed automatically generated ontology is that it integrates the dynamic features of KGs and the quality features of ontologies.

In traffic engineering, vehicle detectors are trained on limited datasets resulting in poor accuracy when deployed in real world applications. Annotating large-scale high quality datasets is challenging. Typically, these datasets have limited diversity; they do not reflect the real-world operating environment. There is a need for a large-scale, cloud based positive and negative mining (PNM) process and a large-scale learning and evaluation system for the application of traffic event detection. The proposed positive and negative mining process addresses the quality of crowd sourced ground truth data through machine learning review and human feedback mechanisms. The proposed learning and evaluation system uses a distributed cloud computing framework to handle data-scaling issues associated with large numbers of samples and a high-dimensional feature space. The system is trained using AdaBoost on $1,000,000$ Haar-like features extracted from $70,000$ annotated video frames. The trained real-time vehicle detector achieves an accuracy of at least $95\%$ for $1/2$ and about $78\%$ for $19/20$ of the time when tested on approximately $7,500,000$ video frames. At the end of 2015, the dataset is expect to have over one billion annotated video frames.
