5G led to a digital revolution for networks by leveraging virtualisation techniques to manage software-based network functions through provided standard interfaces, which have matured recently for cloud infrastructure that is widely employed across domains and sectors. This undiscovered potential to adequately respond to concurrent and specialised traffic demands is promising for a wide spectrum of industries. Moreover, it exposes the networking ecosystem to prospects beyond the traditional value chain. However, the configuration, deployment and operation of a 5G network are challenging. Thus, different scientific and research entities have built their own open, evolvable and updateable testbed infrastructure that can be used for experimentation purposes. Such testbeds enable different stakeholders to integrate new systems or features exploiting new technologies, assess the performance of innovative services, and customise operation policies to find optimal setups from a cost-effective perspective. Furthermore, federations of infrastructure allow for wider and more complex experiments to be performed in distributed domains. However, numerous technical and procedural obstacles exist during the building of 5G network testbeds. In addition, some technical barriers persist despite the testing of alternatives and ongoing efforts within open-source systems and commercial equipment portfolios. All these limitations and challenges are relevant for experimenters and stakeholders as they attempt to determine the scope of 5G set expectations.

The use of dual polarization in mobile satellite systems is very promising for increasing the channel capacity. Polarized Modulation is proposed in this paper for use in practical systems, by providing simple equations for computing its capacity and featuring a link adaptation algorithm. This scheme shows remarkable gains in the spectral efficiency when compared with single polarization and other multi-antenna techniques such as V-BLAST. Polarized Modulation is a particular instance of more general Index Modulations, which are being considered for 5G networks. Thus, the proposed link adaptation algorithm could find synergies with current activities for future terrestrial networks.

Abstract:
Mutual Information is the metric that is used to perform link adaptation, which allows to achieve rates near capacity. The computation of adaptive transmission modes is achieved by employing the map** between the Signal to Noise Ratio and the Mutual Information. Mutual Information is the metric that is used to perform link adaptation, which allows to achieve rates near capacity. The computation of adaptive transmission modes is achieved by employing the map** between the Signal to Noise Ratio and the Mutual Information. Due to the high complexity of the computation of the Mutual Information, this process is performed off-line via Monte Carlo simulations, whose results are stored in look-up tables. However, in Index Modulations, such as Spatial Modulation or Polarized Modulation, this is not feasible since the constellation and the Mutual Information are channel dependent and it would require to compute this metric at each time instant if the channel is time varying. In this paper, we propose different approximations in order to obtain a simple closed-form expression that allows to compute the Mutual Information at each time instant and thus, making feasible the link adaptation.

The use of dual polarization in mobile satellite systems is very promising as a means for increasing the transmission capacity. In this paper we study a system which uses simultaneously two orthogonal polarizations in order to communicate with the users. The application of MIMO signal processing techniques along with Adaptive Coding and Modulation in the forward link can provide remarkable throughput gains up to 100 % when compared with the single polarization system. The gateway is allowed to vary the MIMO and Modulation and Coding Schemes for each frame. The selection is done by means of a link adaptation algorithm which uses a tunable margin to achieve a prede ned target Frame Error Rate.

Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL) are two technologies used to extract representations of the data for a specific purpose. ML algorithms take a set of data as input to generate one or several predictions. To define the final version of one model, usually there is an initial step devoted to train the algorithm (get the right final values of the parameters of the model). There are several techniques, from supervised learning to reinforcement learning, which have different requirements. On the market, there are some frameworks or APIs that reduce the effort for designing a new ML model. In this report, using the benchmark DLBENCH, we will analyse the performance and the execution modes of some well-known ML frameworks on the Finis Terrae II supercomputer when supervised learning is used. The report will show that placement of data and allocated hardware can have a large influence on the final timeto-solution.
