The task-based dataflow programming model has emerged as an alternative to the process-centric programming model for extreme-scale applications. However, load balancing is still a challenge in task-based dataflow runtimes. In this paper, we present extensions to the PaR-SEC runtime to demonstrate that distributed work stealing is an effective load-balancing method for task-based dataflow runtimes. In contrast to shared-memory work stealing, we find that each process should consider future tasks and the expected waiting time for execution when determining whether to steal. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed work-stealing policies for a sparse Cholesky factorization, which shows a speedup of up to 35% compared to a static division of work.

A disruptive technology that is influencing not only computing paradigm but every other business is the rise of big data. Internet of Things (IoT) applications are considered to be a major source of big data. Such IoT applications are in general supported through clouds where data is stored and processed by big data processing systems. In order to improve the efficiency of cloud infrastructure so that they can efficiently support IoT big data applications, it is important to understand how these applications and the corresponding big data processing systems will perform in cloud computing environments. However, given the scalability and complex requirements of big data processing systems, an empirical evaluation on actual cloud infrastructure can hinder the development of timely and cost effective IoT solutions. Therefore, a simulator supporting IoT applications in cloud environment is highly demanded, but such work is still in its infancy. To fill this gap, we have designed and implemented IOTSim which supports and enables simulation of IoT big data processing using MapReduce model in cloud computing environment. A real case study validates the efficacy of the simulator.

Internet of Things (IoT) has gained substantial attention recently and play a significant role in smart city application deployments. A number of such smart city applications depend on sensor fusion capabilities in the cloud from diverse data sources. We introduce the concept of IoT and present in detail ten different parameters that govern our sensor data fusion evaluation framework. We then evaluate the current state-of-the art in sensor data fusion against our sensor data fusion framework. Our main goal is to examine and survey different sensor data fusion research efforts based on our evaluation framework. The major open research issues related to sensor data fusion are also presented.

Proliferation of cloud computing has revolutionized hosting and delivery of Internet-based application services. However, with the constant launch of new cloud services and capabilities almost every month by both big (e.g., Amazon Web Service, Microsoft Azure) and small companies (e.g. Rackspace, Ninefold), decision makers (e.g. application developers, CIOs) are likely to be overwhelmed by choices available. The decision making problem is further complicated due to heterogeneous service configurations and application provisioning Quality of Service (QoS) constraints. To address this hard challenge, in our previous work we developed a semi-automated, extensible, and ontology-based approach to infrastructure service discovery and selection based on only design time constraints (e.g., renting cost, datacentre location, service feature, etc.). In this paper, we extend our approach to include the real-time (run-time) QoS (endto- end message latency, end-to-end message throughput) in the decision making process. Hosting of next generation applications in domain of on-line interactive gaming, large scale sensor analytics, and real-time mobile applications on cloud services necessitates optimization of such real-time QoS constraints for meeting Service Level Agreements (SLAs). To this end, we present a real-time QoS aware multi-criteria decision making technique that builds over well known Analytics Hierarchy Process (AHP) method. The proposed technique is applicable to selecting Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) cloud offers, and it allows users to define multiple design-time and real-time QoS constraints or requirements. These requirements are then matched against our knowledge base to compute possible best fit combinations of cloud services at IaaS layer. We conducted extensive experiments to prove the feasibility of our approach.

Electronic Health (e-Health) technology has brought the world with significant transformation from traditional paper-based medical practice to Information and Communication Technologies (ICT)-based systems for automatic management (storage, processing, and archiving) of information. Traditionally e-Health systems have been designed to operate within stovepipes on dedicated networks, physical computers, and locally managed software platforms that make it susceptible to many serious limitations including: 1) lack of on-demand scalability during critical situations; 2) high administrative overheads and costs; and 3) in-efficient resource utilization and energy consumption due to lack of automation. In this paper, we present an approach to migrate the ICT systems in the e-Health sector from traditional in-house Client/Server (C/S) architecture to the virtualised cloud computing environment. To this end, we developed two cloud-based e-Health applications (Medical Practice Management System and Telemedicine Practice System) for demonstrating how cloud services can be leveraged for develo** and deploying such applications. The Windows Azure cloud computing platform is selected as an example public cloud platform for our study. We conducted several performance evaluation experiments to understand the Quality Service (QoS) tradeoffs of our applications under variable workload on Azure.
