The paper contributes to strengthening the relation between machine learning and the theory of differential equations. In this context, the inverse problem of fitting the parameters, and the initial condition of a differential equation to some measurements constitutes a key issue. The paper explores an abstraction that can be used to construct a family of loss functions with the aim of fitting the solution of an initial value problem to a set of discrete or continuous measurements. It is shown, that an extension of the adjoint equation can be used to derive the gradient of the loss function as a continuous analogue of backpropagation in machine learning. Numerical evidence is presented that under reasonably controlled circumstances the gradients obtained this way can be used in a gradient descent to fit the solution of an initial value problem to a set of continuous noisy measurements, and a set of discrete noisy measurements that are recorded at uncertain times.

Abstract:
We present a fixed-parameter tractable algorithm for first-order model checking on interpretations of graph classes with bounded local cliquewidth. Notably, this includes interpretations of planar graphs, and more generally, of classes of bounded genus. We consider hereditary classes of graphs equipped with a total order. We provide multiple equivalent characterisations of those classes which have bounded twin-width. In particular, we prove a grid theorem for classes of ordered graphs which have unbounded twin-width. From this we derive that the model-checking problem for first-order logic is fixed-parameter tractable over a hereditary class of ordered graphs if, and -- under common complexity-theoretic assumptions -- only if the class has bounded twin-width. For hereditary classes of ordered graphs, we show that bounded twin-width is equivalent to the NIP property from model theory, as well as the smallness condition from enumerative combinatorics. We prove the existence of a gap in the growth of hereditary classes of ordered graphs. Furthermore, we provide a grid theorem which applies to all monadically NIP classes of structures (ordered or unordered), or equivalently, classes which do not transduce the class of all finite graphs.

Abstract:
We establish a list of characterizations of bounded twin-width for hereditary, totally ordered binary structures. This has several consequences. First, it allows us to show that a (hereditary) class of matrices over a finite alphabet either contains at least $n!$ matrices of size $n \times n$, or at most $c^n$ for some constant $c$. This generalizes the celebrated Stanley-Wilf conjecture/Marcus-Ta…

This generalizes the celebrated Stanley-Wilf conjecture/Marcus-Tardos theorem from permutation classes to any matrix class over a finite alphabet, answers our small conjecture [SODA '21] in the case of ordered graphs, and with more work, settles a question first asked by Balogh, Bollobás, and Morris [Eur. J. Comb. '06] on the growth of hereditary classes of ordered graphs. Second, it gives a fixed-parameter approximation algorithm for twin-width on ordered graphs. Third, it yields a full classification of fixed-parameter tractable first-order model checking on hereditary classes of ordered binary structures. Fourth, it provides a model-theoretic characterization of classes with bounded twin-width.

Reducing youth tobacco use is critical for improving child health since tobacco use is associated with respiratory problems, and nicotine may interfere with healthy brain development. While tobacco regulation has contributed to declines in cigarette use among youth, these declines have occurred more quickly for youth of high socioeconomic status (SES) compared to youth of low SES. A major barrier to smoking cessation for adolescents of low SES is coordination of access and transportation to in-person treatment sessions. Low-SES youth may have family obligations that limit their ability to access in-person treatment. At the same time, mobile use among adolescents is high: 85% have smartphones. Additionally, adolescents engage in texting at high rates, suggesting that they are well-suited for mobile instant messaging interventions. Mobile interventions have shown promise for youth, but their use remains low. Thus, more research is needed to develop effective and engaging mobile interventions to increase quit rates. In this paper, we provide a brief review of approaches to adolescent smoking cessation and describe the promise of chatbots for smoking cessation.

Abstract:
A realistic Chinese word segmentation tool must adapt to textual variations with minimal training input and yet robust enough to yield reliable segmentation result for all variants. Various lexicon-driven approaches to Chinese segmentation, e.g. [1,16], achieve high f-scores yet require massive training for any variation. Text-driven approach, e.g. [12], can be easily adapted for domain and genre changes yet has difficulty matching the high f-scores of the lexicon-driven approaches. In this paper, we refine and implement an innovative text-driven word boundary decision (WBD) segmentation model proposed in [15]. The WBD model treats word segmentation simply and efficiently as a binary decision on whether to realize the natural textual break between two adjacent characters as a word boundary. The WBD model allows simple and quick training data preparation converting characters as contextual vectors for learning the word boundary decision. Machine learning experiments with four different classifiers show that training with 1,000 vectors and 1 million vectors achieve comparable and reliable results. In addition, when applied to SigHAN Bakeoff 3 competition data, the WBD model produces OOV recall rates that are higher than all published results. Unlike all previous work, our OOV recall rate is comparable to our own F-score. Both experiments support the claim that the WBD model is a realistic model for Chinese word segmentation as it can be easily adapted for new variants with the robust result. In conclusion, we will discuss linguistic ramifications as well as future implications for the WBD approach.

Abstract:
Mean-field models are often used to approximate Markov processes with large state-spaces. One-step processes, also known as birth-death processes, are an important class of such processes and are processes with state space $\{0,1,\ldots,N\}$ and where each transition is of size one. One-step processes, also known as birth-death processes, are an important class of such processes and are processes with state space $\{0,1,\ldots,N\}$ and where each transition is of size one. We derive explicit bounds on the expected value of such a process, bracketing it between the mean-field model and another simple ODE. Our bounds require that the Markov transition rates are density dependent polynomials that satisfy a sign condition. We illustrate the tightness of our bounds on the SIS epidemic process and the voter model.

Experimental results shows that the proposed method, WAMM obtained better results in NSCT domain than the wavelet domain as it preserves more edges and keeps the visual quality intact in the fused image.

Iterating between a router and a traffic micro-simulation is an increasibly accepted method for doing traffic assignment. This paper, after pointing out that the analytical theory of simulation-based assignment to-date is insufficient for some practical cases, presents results of simulation studies from a real world study. Specifically, we look into the issues of uniqueness, variability, and robustness and validation. Regarding uniqueness, despite some cautionary notes from a theoretical point of view, we find no indication of ``meta-stable'' states for the iterations. Variability however is considerable. By variability we mean the variation of the simulation of a given plan set by just changing the random seed. We show then results from three different micro-simulations under the same iteration scenario in order to test for the robustness of the results under different implementations. We find the results encouraging, also when comparing to reality and with a traditional assignment result.
