On the other hand, Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTNs) offer unprecedented possibilities for global connectivity. Moreover, the NTN can also support the upsurge in the number of Internet of Things (IoT) devices by providing reliable and ubiquitous connectivity. Although NTNs have shown promising results, there are several challenges associated with their usage, such as signal propagation delays, interference, security, etc. In this article, we have discussed the possibilities of integrating RIS with an NTN platform to overcome the issues associated with NTN. Furthermore, through experimental validation, we have demonstrated that the RIS-assisted NTN can play a pivotal role in improving the performance of the entire communication system.

Fifth generation (5G) and beyond-5G (B5G) systems expect coverage and capacity enhancements along with the consideration of limited power, cost and spectrum. Densification of small cells (SCs) is a promising approach to cater these demands of 5G and B5G systems. However, such an ultra dense network of SCs requires provision of smart backhaul and fronthaul networks. In this paper, we employ a scalable idea of using networked flying platforms (NFPs) as aerial hubs to provide fronthaul connectivity to the SCs. We consider the association problem of SCs and NFPs in a SC network and study the effect of practical constraints related to the system and NFPs. Mainly, we show that the association problem is related to the generalized assignment problem (GAP). Using this relation with the GAP, we show the NP-hard complexity of the association problem and further derive an upper bound for the maximum achievable sum data rate. Linear Programming relaxation of the problem is also studied to compare the results with the derived bounds. Finally, two efficient (less complex) greedy solutions of the association problem are presented, where one of them is a distributed solution and the other one is its centralized version. Numerical results show a favorable performance of the presented algorithms with respect to the exhaustive search and derived bounds. The computational complexity comparison of the algorithms with the exhaustive search is also presented to show that the presented algorithms can be practically implemented.

The two schemes are based on a threshold received signal strength (RSS) and an average threshold D2D distance between two given users to select the D2D mode. While one scheme triggers the D2D mode based on distance values only, the other scheme can trigger D2D mode for larger distances if a minimum RSS value is received, for it to maximize connectivity regions. Numerical results show the advantage of the presented schemes in offloading traffic from aerial platforms and the effect of the environment on the performance of D2D enabled aerial networks.

Network Flying Platforms (NFPs) such as unmanned aerial vehicles, unmanned balloons or drones flying at low/medium/high altitude can be employed to enhance network coverage and capacity by deploying a swarm of flying platforms that implement novel radio resource management techniques. In this paper, we propose a novel layered architecture where NFPs, of various types and flying at low/medium/high layers in a swarm of flying platforms, are considered as an integrated part of the future cellular networks to inject additional capacity and expand the coverage for exceptional scenarios (sports events, concerts, etc.) and hard-to-reach areas (rural or sparsely populated areas). Successful roll-out of the proposed architecture depends on several factors including, but are not limited to: network optimisation for NFP placement and association, safety operations of NFP for network/equipment security, and reliability for NFP transport and control/signaling mechanisms. In this work, we formulate the optimum placement of NFP at a Lower Layer (LL) by exploiting the airborne Self-organising Network (SON) features. Our initial simulations show the NFP-LL can serve more User Equipment (UE)s using this placement technique.

5G+ systems expect enhancement in data rate and coverage area under limited power constraint. Such requirements can be fulfilled by the densification of small cells (SCs). However, a major challenge is the management of fronthaul links connected with an ultra dense network of SCs. A cost effective and scalable idea of using network flying platforms (NFPs) is employed here, where the NFPs are used as fronthaul hubs that connect the SCs to the core network. The association problem of NFPs and SCs is formulated considering a number of practical constraints such as backhaul data rate limit, maximum supported links and bandwidth by NFPs and quality of service requirement of the system. The network centric case of the system is considered that aims to maximize the number of associated SCs without any biasing, i.e., no preference for high priority SCs. Then, two new efficient greedy algorithms are designed to solve the presented association problem. Numerical results show a favorable performance of our proposed methods in comparison to exhaustive search.

The densification of small-cell base stations in a 5G architecture is a promising approach to enhance the coverage area and facilitate the ever increasing capacity demand of end users. However, the bottleneck is an intelligent management of a backhaul/fronthaul network for these small-cell base stations. This involves efficient association and placement of the backhaul hubs that connects these small-cells with the core network. Terrestrial hubs suffer from an inefficient non line of sight link limitations and unavailability of a proper infrastructure in an urban area. Seeing the popularity of flying platforms, we employ here an idea of using networked flying platform (NFP) such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), drones, unmanned balloons flying at different altitudes, as aerial backhaul hubs. The association problem of these NFP-hubs and small-cell base stations is formulated considering backhaul link and NFP related limitations such as maximum number of supported links and bandwidth. Then, this paper presents an efficient and distributed solution of the designed problem, which performs a greedy search in order to maximize the sum rate of the overall network. A favorable performance is observed via a numerical comparison of our proposed method with optimal exhaustive search algorithm in terms of sum rate and run-time speed.

Emerging device centric systems (DCS) such as device-to-device (D2D) communications are considered as a standard part of future mobile networks, where operators/consumers involve the devices in direct communication to improve the cellular system throughput, latency, fairness, and energy efficiency. However, battery life of mobile devices involved in such communications is crucial for 5G smartphone users to explore the emerging applications in DCS. It is anticipated that the owners of 5G-enabled smartphones use their devices more extensively to talk, text, email, and surf the Web more often than do customers with 4G smartphones or traditional handsets, which puts a significantly higher demand on the battery life. Smartphones are currently equipped with multiple radio interfaces that enable them to access different types of wireless networks including LTE-direct and Wi-Fi-direct, besides cellular networks. Such a capability is not well explored within the context of DCS. This article proposes a new scheme to support the emerging features in DCS where a D2D-enabled mobile device (sink device or a file/content requester) aggregates the radio resources of multiple mobile devices (source devices or file/content providers) via its multiple radio interfaces such that the scheme is referred to as devices-to-device (Ds2D) communications. Ds2D communication scheme ensures an optimal packet split among the source mobile devices to improve the file/content transfer latency (FTL), energy efficiency, and battery life. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed optimal packet split scheme among multiple source devices participating in Ds2D communication scheme guarantees an improvement in mobile battery life over wide range of data rate levels in comparison with the random packet split strategy and traditional D2D communication paradigm between the sink and source mobile devices.

Using drones as flying base stations is a promising approach to enhance the network coverage and area capacity by moving supply towards demand when required. However deployment of such base stations can face some restrictions that need to be considered. One of the limitations in drone base stations (drone-BSs) deployment is the availability of reliable wireless backhaul link. This paper investigates how different types of wireless backhaul offering various data rates would affect the number of served users. Two approaches, namely, network-centric and user-centric, are introduced and the optimal 3D backhaul-aware placement of a drone-BS is found for each approach. To this end, the total number of served users and sum-rates are maximized in the network-centric and user-centric frameworks, respectively. Moreover, as it is preferred to decrease drone-BS movements to save more on battery and increase flight time and to reduce the channel variations, the robustness of the network is examined as how sensitive it is with respect to the users displacements.

The presence of a super high rate, but also cost-efficient, easy-to-deploy, and scalable, backhaul/fronthaul framework is essential in the upcoming fifth-generation (5G) wireless networks \& beyond. Motivated by the mounting interest in the unmanned flying platforms of various types including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), drones, balloons, and high-altitude/medium-altitude/low-altitude platforms (HAPs/MAPs/LAPs), which we refer to as the networked flying platforms (NFPs), for providing communications services and the recent advances in free-space optics (FSO), this article investigates the feasibility of a novel vertical backhaul/fronthaul framework where the NFPs transport the backhaul/fronthaul traffic between the access and core networks via point-to-point FSO links. The performance of the proposed innovative approach is investigated under different weather conditions and a broad range of system parameters. Simulation results demonstrate that the FSO-based vertical backhaul/fronthaul framework can offer data rates higher than the baseline alternatives, and thus can be considered as a promising solution to the emerging backhaul/fronthaul requirements of the 5G+ wireless networks, particularly in the presence of ultra-dense heterogeneous small cells. The homogeneous Poisson point process (PPP) is widely used to model spatial distribution of base stations and mobile terminals. The same process can be used to model underlay device-to-device (D2D) network, however, neglecting homophilic relation for D2D pairing presents underestimated system insights. In this paper, we model both spatial and social distributions of interfering D2D nodes as proximity based independently marked homogeneous Poisson point process. The proximity considers physical distance between D2D nodes whereas social relationship is modeled as Zipf based marks. We apply these two paradigms to analyze the effect of interference on coverage probability of distance-proportional power-controlled cellular user. Effectively, we apply two type of functional map**s (physical distance, social marks) to Laplace functional of PPP. The resulting coverage probability has no closed-form expression, however for a subset of social marks, the mark summation converges to digamma and polygamma functions. This subset constitutes the upper and lower bounds on coverage probability. We present numerical evaluation of these bounds on coverage probability by varying number of different parameters. The results show that by imparting simple power control on cellular user, ultra-dense underlay D2D network can be realized without compromising the coverage probability of cellular user.

Hybrid precoding can significantly reduce the number of required radio frequency (RF) chains and relieve the huge energy consumption in mmWave massive MIMO systems, thus attracting much interests from academic and industry. However, most existing hybrid precoding schemes are based on singular value decomposition (SVD). Due to the very different sub-channel signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) after SVD, complicated bit allocations is usually required to match the sub-channel SNRs. To solve this problem, we propose a geometric mean decomposition (GMD)-based hybrid precoding scheme to avoid the complicated bit allocation. Its basic idea is to seek a pair of analog and digital precoding matrices that are sufficiently close to the optimal unconstrained GMD precoding matrix. Specifically, we design the analog (digital) precoding matrix while kee** the digital (analog) precoding matrix fixed. Further, the principle of basis pursuit is utilized in the design of analog precoding matrix, while we obtain the digital precoding matrix by projecting the GMD operation on the digital precoding matrix. Simulation results verify that the proposed GMD-based hybird precoding scheme outperforms conventional SVD-based hybrid precoding schemes and achieves much better bit error rate (BER) performance with low complexity.

Soaring capacity and coverage demands dictate that future cellular networks need to soon migrate towards ultra-dense networks. However, network densification comes with a host of challenges that include compromised energy efficiency, complex interference management, cumbersome mobility management, burdensome signaling overheads and higher backhaul costs. Interestingly, most of the problems, that beleaguer network densification, stem from legacy networks' one common feature i.e., tight coupling between the control and data planes regardless of their degree of heterogeneity and cell density. Consequently, in wake of 5G, control and data planes separation architecture (SARC) has recently been conceived as a promising paradigm that has potential to address most of aforementioned challenges. In this article, we review various proposals that have been presented in literature so far to enable SARC. More specifically, we analyze how and to what degree various SARC proposals address the four main challenges in network densification namely: energy efficiency, system level capacity maximization, interference management and mobility management. We then focus on two salient features of future cellular networks that have not yet been adapted in legacy networks at wide scale and thus remain a hallmark of 5G, i.e., coordinated multipoint (CoMP), and device-to-device (D2D) communications. After providing necessary background on CoMP and D2D, we analyze how SARC can particularly act as a major enabler for CoMP and D2D in context of 5G. This article thus serves as both a tutorial as well as an up to date survey on SARC, CoMP and D2D. Most importantly, the article provides an extensive outlook of challenges and opportunities that lie at the crossroads of these three mutually entangled emerging technologies.

The homogeneous poisson point process (PPP) is widely used to model temporal, spatial or both topologies of base stations (BSs) and mobile terminals (MTs). However, negative spatial correlation in BSs, due to strategical deployments, and positive spatial correlations in MTs, due to homophilic relations, cannot be captured by homogeneous spatial PPP (SPPP). In this paper, we assume doubly stochastic poisson process, a generalization of homogeneous PPP, with intensity measure as another stochastic process. To this end, we assume Permanental Cox Process (PCP) to capture positive spatial correlation in MTs. We consider product density to derive closed-form approximation (CFA) of spatial summary statistics. We propose Euler Characteristic (EC) based novel approach to approximate intractable random intensity measure and subsequently derive nearest neighbor distribution function. We further propose the threshold and spatial extent of excursion set of chi-square random field as interference control parameters to select different cluster sizes for device-to-device (D2D) communication. The spatial extent of clusters is controlled by nearest neighbor distribution function which is incorporated into Laplace functional of SPPP to analyze the effect of D2D interfering clusters on average coverage probability of cellular user. The CFA and empirical results are in good agreement and its comparison with SPPP clearly shows spatial correlation between D2D nodes.

To realize UDN, a reliable, Gigahertz bandwidth, and cost-effective backhaul connecting ultra-dense small-cell base stations (BSs) and macro-cell BS is prerequisite. Millimeter-wave (mmWave) can provide the potential Gbps traffic for wireless backhaul. Moreover, mmWave can be easily integrated with massive MIMO for the improved link reliability. In this article, we discuss the feasibility of mmWave massive MIMO based wireless backhaul for 5G UDN, and the benefits and challenges are also addressed. Especially, we propose a digitally-controlled phase-shifter network (DPSN) based hybrid precoding/combining scheme for mmWave massive MIMO, whereby the low-rank property of mmWave massive MIMO channel matrix is leveraged to reduce the required cost and complexity of transceiver with a negligible performance loss. One key feature of the proposed scheme is that the macro-cell BS can simultaneously support multiple small-cell BSs with multiple streams for each smallcell BS, which is essentially different from conventional hybrid precoding/combining schemes typically limited to single-user MIMO with multiple streams or multi-user MIMO with single stream for each user. Based on the proposed scheme, we further explore the fundamental issues of develo** mmWave massive MIMO for wireless backhaul, and the associated challenges, insight, and prospect to enable the mmWave massive MIMO based wireless backhaul for 5G UDN are discussed.

For this purpose, different energy efficient MAC protocols with their respective energy optimization techniques; Low Power Listening (LPL), Scheduled Contention and Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA), are elaborated. We also analytically compared path loss models for In-body, On-body and Off-body communications in WBASNs. These three path loss scenarios are simulated in MATLAB and results shown that path loss is more in In-body communication because of less energy level to take care of tissues and organs located inside human body. Secondly, power model for WBASNs of Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance (CSMA/CA) and beacon mode is also presented. MATLAB simulations results shown that power of CSMA/CA mode is less as compared to beacon mode. Finally, we suggested that hybrid mode is more useful to achieve optimization in power consumption, which consequently results in high energy efficiency.

In the past few years considerable attention has been given to the design of Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) Eigenmode Transmission Systems (EMTS). This paper presents an in-depth analysis of a new MIMO eigenmode transmission strategy. The non-linear decomposition technique called Geometric Mean Decomposition (GMD) is employed for the formation of eigenmodes over MIMO flatfading channel. Exploiting GMD technique, identical, parallel and independent transmission pipes are created for data transmission at higher rate. The system based on such decomposition technique is referred to as MIMO Identical Eigenmode Transmission System (IETS). The comparative analysis of the MIMO transceiver design exploiting nonlinear and linear decomposition techniques for variable constellation is presented in this paper. The new transmission strategy is tested in combination with the Vertical Bell Labs Layered Space Time (V-BLAST) decoding scheme using different number of antennas on both sides of the communication link.
