Abstract:
Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most frequent neurodegenerative disease with prevalence among general population reaching 0.1-1 %, and an annual incidence between 1.3-2.0/10000 inhabitants. The mean age at diagnosis of PD is 55 and most patients are between 50 and 80 years old. The most obvious symptoms are movement-related; these include tremor, rigidity, slowness of movement and walking difficulties. Frequently these are the symptoms that lead to the PD diagnoses. Later, thinking and behavioral problems may arise, and other symptoms include cognitive impairment and sensory, sleep and emotional problems. In this paper we will present an ongoing project that will evaluate if voice and handwriting analysis can be reliable predictors/indicators of swallowing and balance impairments in PD. An important advantage of voice and handwritten analysis is its low intrusiveness and easy implementation in clinical practice. Thus, if a significant correlation between these simple analyses and the gold standard video-fluoroscopic analysis will imply simpler and less stressing diagnostic test for the patients as well as the use of cheaper analysis systems.

Abstract:
An algorithm for detecting tonal vocalizations from estuarine dolphin (Sotalia guianensis) specimens without interference of a human operator is developed. The raw audio data collected from a passive monitoring sensor in the Cananéia underwater soundscape is converted to spectrogram images, containing the desired acoustic event (whistle) as a linear pattern in the images. Detection is a four-step method: first, ridge maps are obtained from the spectrogram images; second, a probabilistic Hough transform algorithm is applied to detect roughly linear ridges, which are adjusted to the true corresponding shape of the whistles via an active contour algorithm; third, feature vectors are built from the geometry of each detected curve; and fourth, the detections are fed to a random forest classifier to parse out false positives. We develop a system capable of reliably classifying roughly 97% of the characteristic patterns detected as Sotalia guianensis whistles or random empty detections.

Abstract:
Dyslexia is a specific learning disorder related to school failure. Detection is both crucial and challenging, especially in languages with transparent orthographies, such as Spanish. Dyslexia is a specific learning disorder related to school failure. Detection is both crucial and challenging, especially in languages with transparent orthographies, such as Spanish. To make detecting dyslexia easier, we designed an online gamified test and a predictive machine learning model. In a study with more than 3,600 participants, our model correctly detected over 80% of the participants with dyslexia. To check the robustness of the method we tested our method using a new data set with over 1,300 participants with age customized tests in a different environment -- a tablet instead of a desktop computer -- reaching a recall of over 72% for the class with dyslexia for children 9 years old or older. Our work shows that dyslexia can be screened using a machine learning approach. An online screening tool based on our methods has already been used by more than 200,000 people.
