Computed tomography (CT) serves as an effective tool for lung cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis, providing a rich source of features to quantify temporal and spatial tumor changes. Nonetheless, the diversity of CT scanners and customized acquisition protocols can introduce significant inconsistencies in texture features, even when assessing the same patient. This variability poses a fundamental challenge for subsequent research that relies on consistent image features. Existing CT image standardization models predominantly utilize GAN-based supervised or semi-supervised learning, but their performance remains limited. We present DiffusionCT, an innovative score-based DDPM model that operates in the latent space to transform disparate non-standard distributions into a standardized form. The architecture comprises a U-Net-based encoder-decoder, augmented by a DDPM model integrated at the bottleneck position. First, the encoder-decoder is trained independently, without embedding DDPM, to capture the latent representation of the input data. Second, the latent DDPM model is trained while kee** the encoder-decoder parameters fixed. Finally, the decoder uses the transformed latent representation to generate a standardized CT image, providing a more consistent basis for downstream analysis. Empirical tests on patient CT images indicate notable improvements in image standardization using DiffusionCT. Additionally, the model significantly reduces image noise in SPAD images, further validating the effectiveness of DiffusionCT for advanced imaging tasks.

Computed tomography (CT) is one of the modalities for effective lung cancer screening, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. The features extracted from CT images are now used to quantify spatial and temporal variations in tumors. However, CT images obtained from various scanners with customized acquisition protocols may introduce considerable variations in texture features, even for the same patient. This presents a fundamental challenge to downstream studies that require consistent and reliable feature analysis. Existing CT image harmonization models rely on GAN-based supervised or semi-supervised learning, with limited performance. This work addresses the issue of CT image harmonization using a new diffusion-based model, named DiffusionCT, to standardize CT images acquired from different vendors and protocols. DiffusionCT operates in the latent space by map** a latent non-standard distribution into a standard one. DiffusionCT incorporates an Unet-based encoder-decoder, augmented by a diffusion model integrated into the bottleneck part. The model is designed in two training phases. The encoder-decoder is first trained, without embedding the diffusion model, to learn the latent representation of the input data. The latent diffusion model is then trained in the next training phase while fixing the encoder-decoder. Finally, the decoder synthesizes a standardized image with the transformed latent representation. The experimental results demonstrate a significant improvement in the performance of the standardization task using DiffusionCT.

Reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms can achieve state-of-the-art performance in decision-making and continuous control tasks. However, applying RL algorithms on safety-critical systems still needs to be well justified due to the exploration nature of many RL algorithms, especially when the model of the robot and the environment are unknown. To address this challenge, we propose a data-driven safety layer that acts as a filter for unsafe actions. The safety layer uses a data-driven predictive controller to enforce safety guarantees for RL policies during training and after deployment. The RL agent proposes an action that is verified by computing the data-driven reachability analysis. If there is an intersection between the reachable set of the robot using the proposed action, we call the data-driven predictive controller to find the closest safe action to the proposed unsafe action. The safety layer penalizes the RL agent if the proposed action is unsafe and replaces it with the closest safe one. In the simulation, we show that our method outperforms state-of-the-art safe RL methods on the robotics navigation problem for a Turtlebot 3 in Gazebo and a quadrotor in Unreal Engine 4 (UE4).

5G network operators consider the dense deployment of small base-stations (SBSs) to increase network coverage and capacity. Hence, operators face the challenge of X-hauling, i.e., backhauling or fronthauling, their traffic to the core network. Also, SBSs densification will increase the possibility of failure of these X-haul links. To cope with this problem, an X-haul outage compensation scheme with the assistance of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) is proposed to mitigate or at least alleviate the effect of X-haul failure. The RIS is a newly adopted technology that is able to improve the performance of wireless networks. In this paper, we present and evaluate an X-haul outage compensation scheme based on placing a number of RIS panels in pre-planned locations to mitigate the effect of X-haul failure. This evaluation is done using frequencies below and beyond 6 GHz. Based on our analytical results, the proposed RIS scheme shows that placing a sufficient number of RIS elements in proximity to the failed SBS under certain conditions can help acquire the same X-haul rate before the occurrence of the failure. Also, we show that for high X-haul spectral density, the RIS-assisted transmission with a certain number of elements can be more energy-efficient than line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight transmissions. Finally, the system's energy efficiency is addressed with and without RIS, and the optimal number of RIS reflecting elements is derived.

However, state-of-the-art deep RL approaches typically lack safety guarantees, especially when the robot and environment models are unknown. To justify widespread deployment, robots must respect safety constraints without sacrificing performance. Thus, we propose a Black-box Reachability-based Safety Layer (BRSL) with three main components: (1) data-driven reachability analysis for a black-box robot model, (2) a trajectory rollout planner that predicts future actions and observations using an ensemble of neural networks trained online, and (3) a differentiable polytope collision check between the reachable set and obstacles that enables correcting unsafe actions. In simulation, BRSL outperforms other state-of-the-art safe RL methods on a Turtlebot 3, a quadrotor, a trajectory-tracking point mass, and a hexarotor in wind with an unsafe set adjacent to the area of highest reward.

We also propose a VGG feature-based domain loss to effectively extract texture properties from unpaired image data to learn the scanner-based texture distributions. The experimental results show that CVH-CT is clearly better than the baselines because of the use of the proposed domain loss, and CVH-CT can effectively reduce the scanner-related variability in terms of radiomic features.

The ever-evolving internet of things (IoT) has led to the growth of numerous wireless sensors, communicating through the internet infrastructure. When designing a network using these sensors, one critical aspect is the longevity and self-sustainability of these devices. For extending the lifetime of these sensors, radio frequency energy harvesting (RFEH) technology has proved to be promising. In this paper, we propose CURE, a novel framework for RFEH that effectively combines the benefits of cell-free massive MIMO (CFmMIMO), unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) to provide seamless energy harvesting to IoT devices. We consider UAV as an access point (AP) in the CFmMIMO framework. To enhance the signal strength of the RFEH and information transfer, we leverage RISs owing to their passive reflection capability. Based on an extensive simulation, we validate our framework's performance by comparing the max-min fairness (MMF) algorithm for the amount of harvested energy.

RadiomicGAN is developed to effectively mitigate the discrepancy caused by using non-standard reconstruction kernels. RadiomicGAN consists of hybrid neural blocks including both pre-trained and trainable layers adopted to learn radiomic feature distributions efficiently. A novel training approach, called Dynamic Window-based Training, has been developed to smoothly transform the pre-trained model to the medical imaging domain. Model performance evaluated using 1401 radiomic features show that RadiomicGAN clearly outperforms the state-of-art image standardization models.

Recently, there has been a flurry of research on the use of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) in wireless networks to create dynamic radio environments. In this paper, we investigate the use of an RIS panel to improve bi-directional communications. Assuming that the RIS will be located on the facade of a building, we propose to connect it to a solar panel that harvests energy to be used to power the RIS panel's smart controller and reflecting elements. Therefore, we present a novel framework to optimally decide the transmit power of each user and the number of elements that will be used to reflect the signal of any two communicating pair in the system (user-user or base station-user). An optimization problem is formulated to jointly minimize a scalarized function of the energy of the communicating pair and the RIS panel and to find the optimal number of reflecting elements used by each user. Although the formulated problem is a mixed-integer non-linear problem, the optimal solution is found by linearizing the non-linear constraints. Besides, a more efficient close to the optimal solution is found using Bender decomposition. Simulation results show that the proposed model is capable of delivering the minimum rate of each user even if line-of-sight communication is not achievable.

Computed tomography (CT) plays an important role in lung malignancy diagnostics and therapy assessment and facilitating precision medicine delivery. However, the use of personalized imaging protocols poses a challenge in large-scale cross-center CT image radiomic studies. We present an end-to-end solution called STAN-CT for CT image standardization and normalization, which effectively reduces discrepancies in image features caused by using different imaging protocols or using different CT scanners with the same imaging protocol. STAN-CT consists of two components: 1) a novel Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) model that is capable of effectively learning the data distribution of a standard imaging protocol with only a few rounds of generator training, and 2) an automatic DICOM reconstruction pipeline with systematic image quality control that ensure the generation of high-quality standard DICOM images. Experimental results indicate that the training efficiency and model performance of STAN-CT have been significantly improved compared to the state-of-the-art CT image standardization and normalization algorithms.

To facilitate UaaS, we introduce a novel framework, dubbed D3S, which consists of four phases: demand, decision, deployment, and service. The main objective of this framework is to develop efficient and realistic solutions to implement these four phases. The technical problems include determining the type and number of UAVs to be deployed, and also their final locations (e.g., hovering or on-ground), which is important for serving certain applications. These questions will be part of the decision phase. They also include trajectory planning of UAVs when they have to travel between charging stations and deployment locations and may have to do this several times. These questions will be part of the deployment phase. The service phase includes the implementation of the backbone communication and data routing between UAVs and between UAVs and ground control stations.

This is why the wide deployment of drone-based communications has the potential to be integrated in the 5G standard. In this paper, we utilize a grid of drones to provide cellular coverage to disaster-struck regions where the terrestrial infrastructure is totally damaged due to earthquake, flood, etc. We propose solutions for the most challenging issues facing drone networks which are limited battery energy and limited backhauling. Our proposed solution based mainly on using three types of drones; tethered backhaul drone (provides high capacity backhauling), untethered powering drone (provides on the fly battery charging) and untethered communication drone (provides cellular connectivity). Hence, an optimization problem is formulated to minimize the energy consumption of drones in addition to determining the placement of these drones and guaranteeing a minimum rate for the users. The simulation results show that we can provide unlimited cellular service to the disaster-affected region under certain conditions with a guaranteed minimum rate for each user.

This is why wide deployment of UAVs has the potential to be integrated in the upcoming 5G standard. Within our framework, outage compensation is done with the assistance of sky BSs (UAVs). The potential benefit of migrating software design from Structured to Object Oriented Paradigm is manifolded including modularity, manageability and extendability. This design migration should be automated as it will reduce the time required in manual process. Our previous work has addressed this issue in terms of optimal graph clustering problem formulated by a quadratic Integer Program (IP). However, it has been realized that solution to the IP is computationally hard and thus heuristic based methods are required to get a near optimal solution. This paper presents a Genetic Algorithm (GA) for optimal clustering with an objective of maximizing intra-cluster edges whereas minimizing the inter-cluster ones. The proposed algorithm relies on fitness based parent selection and cross-overing cluster elements to reach an optimal solution step by step. The scheme was implemented and tested against a set of real and synthetic data. The experimental results show that GA outperforms our previous works based on Greedy and Monte Carlo approaches by 40% and 49.5%.
