Sixth generation (6G) wireless networks are envisioned to include aspects of energy footprint reduction (sustainability), besides those of network capacity and connectivity, at the design stage. This paradigm change requires radically new physical layer technologies. Notably, the integration of large-aperture arrays and the transmission over high frequency bands, such as the sub-terahertz spectrum, are two promising options. In many communication scenarios of practical interest, the use of large antenna arrays in the sub-terahertz frequency range often results in short-range transmission distances that are characterized by line-of-sight channels, in which pairs of transmitters and receivers are located in the (radiating) near field of one another. These features make the traditional designs, based on the far-field approximation, for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems sub-optimal in terms of spatial multiplexing gains. To overcome these limitations, new designs for MIMO systems are required, which account for the spherical wavefront that characterizes the electromagnetic waves in the near field, in order to ensure the highest spatial multiplexing gain without increasing the power expenditure. In this paper, we introduce an analytical framework for optimizing the deployment of antenna arrays in line-of-sight channels, which can be applied to paraxial and non-paraxial network deployments. In the paraxial setting, we devise a simpler analytical framework, which, compared to those available in the literature, provides explicit information about the impact of key design parameters. In the non-paraxial setting, we introduce a novel analytical framework that allows us to identify a set of sufficient conditions to be fulfilled for achieving the highest spatial multiplexing gain. The proposed designs are validated with numerical simulations.

The integration of Smart Surfaces in 6G communication networks, also dubbed as Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs), is a promising paradigm change gaining significant attention given its disruptive features. RISs are a key enabler in the realm of 6G Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) systems where novel services can be offered together with the future mobile networks communication capabilities. This paper addresses the critical challenge of precisely localizing users within a communication network by leveraging the controlled-reflective properties of RIS elements without relying on more power-hungry traditional methods, e.g., GPS, adverting the need of deploying additional infrastructure and even avoiding interfering with communication efforts. Moreover, we go one step beyond: we build COLoRIS, an Opportunistic ISAC approach that leverages localization agnostic RIS configurations to accurately position mobile users via trained learning models. Extensive experimental validation and simulations in large-scale synthetic scenarios show 5% positioning errors (with respect to field size) under different conditions. Further, we show that a low-complexity version running in a limited off-the-shelf (embedded, low-power) system achieves positioning errors in the 11% range at a negligible +2% energy expense with respect to the classical RIS.

This paper presents a theoretical and mathematical framework for the design of a conformal reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) that adapts to non-planar geometries, which is a critical advancement for the deployment of RIS on non-planar and irregular surfaces as envisioned in smart radio environments. Previous research focused mainly on the optimization of RISs assuming a predetermined shape, while neglecting the intricate interplay between shape optimization, phase optimization, and mutual coupling effects. Our contribution, the T3DRIS framework, addresses this fundamental problem by integrating the configuration and shape optimization of RISs into a unified model and design framework, thus facilitating the application of RIS technology to a wider spectrum of environmental objects. The mathematical core of T3DRIS is rooted in optimizing the 3D deployment of the unit cells and tuning circuits, aiming at maximizing the communication performance. Through rigorous full-wave simulations and a comprehensive set of numerical analyses, we validate the proposed approach and demonstrate its superior performance and applicability over contemporary designs. This study-the first of its kind-paves the way for a new direction in RIS research, emphasizing the importance of a theoretical and mathematical perspective in tackling the challenges of conformal RISs.

The tremendous hype around autonomous driving is eagerly calling for emerging and novel technologies to support advanced mobility use cases. As car manufactures keep develo** SAE level 3+ systems to improve the safety and comfort of passengers, traffic authorities need to establish new procedures to manage the transition from human-driven to fully-autonomous vehicles while providing a feedback-loop mechanism to fine-tune envisioned autonomous systems. Thus, a way to automatically profile autonomous vehicles and differentiate those from human-driven ones is a must. In this paper, we present a fully-fledged framework that monitors active vehicles using camera images and state information in order to determine whether vehicles are autonomous, without requiring any active notification from the vehicles themselves. Essentially, it builds on the cooperation among vehicles, which share their data acquired on the road feeding a machine learning model to identify autonomous cars. We extensively tested our solution and created the NexusStreet dataset, by means of the CARLA simulator, employing an autonomous driving control agent and a steering wheel maneuvered by licensed drivers. Experiments show it is possible to discriminate the two behaviors by analyzing video clips with an accuracy of 80%, which improves up to 93% when the target state information is available. Lastly, we deliberately degraded the state to observe how the framework performs under non-ideal data collection conditions.

This paper introduces the distributed and intelligent integrated sensing and communications (DISAC) concept, a transformative approach for 6G wireless networks that extends the emerging concept of integrated sensing and communications (ISAC). DISAC addresses the limitations of the existing ISAC models and, to overcome them, it introduces two novel foundational functionalities for both sensing and communications: a distributed architecture and a semantic and goal-oriented framework. The distributed architecture enables large-scale and energy-efficient tracking of connected users and objects, leveraging the fusion of heterogeneous sensors. The semantic and goal-oriented intelligent and parsimonious framework, enables the transition from classical data fusion to the composition of semantically selected information, offering new paradigms for the optimization of resource utilization and exceptional multi-modal sensing performance across various use cases. This article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of wireless communication technologies, from the foundations to the recent wireless advances. Specifically, we take a neutral look at the state-of-the-art technologies for 5G and the ongoing evolutions towards 6G, reviewing the recommendations of the International Mobile Communication vision for 2030 (IMT-2030). We first highlight specific features of IMT 2030, including three IMT-2020 extensions (URLLC+, eMBB+, and mMTC+) and three new innovations (Ubiquitous connectivity and integrating the new capabilities of sensing & AI with communication functionality). Then, we delve into three major challenges in implementing 6G, along with global standardization efforts. Besides, a proof of concept is provided by demonstrating terahertz (THz) signal transmission using Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) multiplexing, which is one of the potential candidates for 6G and beyond. To inspire further potential research, we conclude by identifying research opportunities and future visions on IMT-2030 recommendations.

The Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN)-compliant solutions lack crucial details to perform effective control loops at multiple time scales. In this vein, we propose ORANUS, an O-RAN-compliant mathematical framework to allocate radio resources to multiple ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication (uRLLC) services. In the near-RT control loop, ORANUS relies on a novel Stochastic Network Calculus (SNC)-based model to compute the amount of guaranteed radio resources for each uRLLC service. Unlike traditional approaches as queueing theory, the SNC-based model allows ORANUS to ensure the probability the packet transmission delay exceeds a budget, i.e., the violation probability, is below a target tolerance. ORANUS also utilizes a RT control loop to monitor service transmission queues, dynamically adjusting the guaranteed radio resources based on detected traffic anomalies. To the best of our knowledge, ORANUS is the first O-RAN-compliant solution which benefits from SNC to carry out near-RT and RT control loops. Simulation results show that ORANUS significantly improves over reference solutions, with an average violation probability 10x lower.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) have emerged as a disruptive technology with the potential to revolutionize wireless communication systems. In this paper, we present RIShield, a novel application of RIS technology specifically designed for radiation-sensitive environments. The aim of RIShield is to enable electromagnetic blackouts, preventing radiation leakage from target areas. We propose a comprehensive framework for RIShield deployment, considering the unique challenges and requirements of radiation-sensitive environments. By strategically positioning RIS panels, we create an intelligent shielding mechanism that selectively absorbs and reflects electromagnetic waves, effectively blocking radiation transmission. To achieve optimal performance, we model the corresponding channel and design a dynamic control that adjusts the RIS configuration based on real-time radiation monitoring. By leveraging the principles of reconfiguration and intelligent control, RIShield ensures adaptive and efficient protection while minimizing signal degradation. Through full-wave and ray-tracing simulations, we demonstrate the effectiveness of RIShield in achieving significant electromagnetic attenuation. Our results highlight the potential of RIS technology to address critical concerns in radiation-sensitive environments, paving the way for safer and more secure operations in industries such as healthcare, nuclear facilities, and defense.

Ensuring the precision of channel modeling plays a pivotal role in the development of wireless communication systems, and this requirement remains a persistent challenge within the realm of networks supported by Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS). Achieving a comprehensive and reliable understanding of channel behavior in RIS-aided networks is an ongoing and complex issue that demands further exploration. In this paper, we empirically validate a recently-proposed impedance-based RIS channel model that accounts for the mutual coupling at the antenna array and precisely models the presence of scattering objects within the environment as a discrete array of loaded dipoles. To this end, we exploit real-life channel measurements collected in an office environment to demonstrate the validity of such a model and its applicability in a practical scenario. Finally, we provide numerical results demonstrating that designing the RIS configuration based upon such model leads to superior performance as compared to reference schemes.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) are expected to be massively deployed in future beyond-5th generation wireless networks, thanks to their ability to programmatically alter the propagation environment, inherent low-cost and low-maintenance nature. Indeed, they are envisioned to be implemented on the facades of buildings or on moving objects. However, such an innovative characteristic may potentially turn into an involuntary negative behavior that needs to be addressed: an undesired signal scattering. In particular, RIS elements may be prone to experience failures due to lack of proper maintenance or external environmental factors. While the resulting Signal-to-Noise-Ratio (SNR) at the intended User Equipment (UE) may not be significantly degraded, we demonstrate the potential risks in terms of unwanted spreading of the transmit signal to non-intended UE. In this regard, we consider the problem of mitigating such undesired effect by proposing two simple yet effective algorithms, which are based on maximizing the Signal-to-Leakage- and-Noise-Ratio (SLNR) over a predefined two-dimensional (2D) area and are applicable in the case of perfect channel-state-information (CSI) and partial CSI, respectively. Numerical and full-wave simulations demonstrate the added gains compared to leakage-unaware and reference schemes.

The advent of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces(RISs) brings along significant improvements for wireless technology on the verge of beyond-fifth-generation networks (B5G).The proven flexibility in influencing the propagation environment opens up the possibility of programmatically altering the wireless channel to the advantage of network designers, enabling the exploitation of higher-frequency bands for superior throughput overcoming the challenging electromagnetic (EM) propagation properties at these frequency bands.
However, RISs are not magic bullets. Their employment comes with significant complexity, requiring ad-hoc deployments and management operations to come to fruition. In this paper, we tackle the open problem of bringing RISs to the field, focusing on areas with little or no coverage. In fact, we present a first-of-its-kind deep reinforcement learning (DRL) solution, dubbed as D-RISA, which trains a DRL agent and, in turn, obtain san optimal RIS deployment. We validate our framework in the indoor scenario of the Rennes railway station in France, assessing the performance of our algorithm against state-of-the-art (SOA) approaches. Our benchmarks showcase better coverage, i.e., 10-dB increase in minimum signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), at lower computational time (up to -25 percent) while improving scalability towards denser network deployments.

To obviate the control of reflective intelligent surfaces (RISs) and the related control overhead, recent works envisioned autonomous and self-configuring RISs that do not need explicit use of control channels. Instead, these devices, named hybrid RISs (HRISs), are equipped with receiving radio-frequency (RF) chains and can perform sensing operations to act independently and in parallel to the other network entities. A natural problem then emerges: as the HRIS operates concurrently with the communication protocols, how should its operation modes be scheduled in time such that it helps the network while minimizing any undesirable effects? In this paper, we propose an orchestration framework that answers this question revealing an engineering trade-off, called the self-configuring trade-off, that characterizes the applicability of self-configuring HRISs under the consideration of massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) networks. We evaluate our proposed framework considering two different HRIS hardware architectures, the power- and signal-based HRISs that differ in their hardware complexity. The numerical results show that the self-configuring HRIS can offer significant performance gains when adopting our framework.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RISs) are expected to play a crucial role in reaching the key performance indicators (KPIs) for future 6G networks. Their competitive edge over conventional technologies lies in their ability to control the wireless environment propagation properties at will, thus revolutionizing the traditional communication paradigm that perceives the communication channel as an uncontrollable black box. As RISs transition from research to market, practical deployment issues arise. Major roadblocks for commercially viable RISs are i) the need for a fast and complex control channel to adapt to the ever-changing wireless channel conditions, and ii) an extensive grid to supply power to each deployed RIS. In this paper, we question the established RIS practices and propose a novel RIS design combining self-configuration and energy self-sufficiency capabilities. We analyze the feasibility of devising fully-autonomous RISs that can be easily and seamlessly installed throughout the environment, following the new Internet-of-Surfaces (IoS) paradigm, requiring modifications neither to the deployed mobile network nor to the power distribution system. In particular, we introduce ARES, an Autonomous RIS with Energy harvesting and Self-configuration solution. ARES achieves outstanding communication performance while demonstrating the feasibility of energy harvesting (EH) for RISs power supply in future deployments.

The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is an emerging technology that changes how wireless networks are perceived, therefore its potential benefits and applications are currently under intense research and investigation. In this letter, we focus on electromagnetically consistent models for RISs inheriting from a recently proposed model based on mutually coupled loaded wire dipoles. While existing related research focuses on free-space wireless channels thereby ignoring interactions between RIS and scattering objects present in the propagation environment, we introduce an RIS-aided channel model that is applicable to more realistic scenarios, where the scattering objects are modeled as loaded wire dipoles. By adjusting the parameters of the wire dipoles, the properties of general natural and engineered material objects can be modeled. Based on this model, we introduce a provably convergent and efficient iterative algorithm that jointly optimizes the RIS and transmitter configurations to maximize the system sum-rate. Extensive numerical results show the net performance improvement provided by the proposed method compared with existing optimization algorithms.

The pandemic outbreak has profoundly changed our life, especially our social habits and communication behaviors. While this dramatic shock has heavily impacted human interaction rules, novel localization techniques are emerging to help society in complying with new policies, such as social distancing. Wireless sensing and machine learning are well suited to alleviate viruses propagation in a privacy-preserving manner. However, its wide deployment requires cost-effective installation and operational solutions. In public environments, individual localization information-such as social distancing-needs to be monitored to avoid safety threats when not properly observed. To this end, the high penetration of wireless devices can be exploited to continuously analyze-and-learn the propagation environment, thereby passively detecting breaches and triggering alerts if required. In this paper, we describe a novel passive and privacy-preserving human localization solution that relies on the directive transmission properties of mmWave communications to monitor social distancing and notify people in the area in case of violations. Thus, addressing the social distancing challenge in a privacy-preserving and cost-efficient manner. Our solution provides an overall accuracy of about 99% in the tested scenarios.

Aerial communication is gradually taking an assertive role within common societal behaviors by means of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), high-altitude platforms (HAPs), and fixed-wing aircrafts (FWAs). Such devices can assist general operations in a diverse set of heterogeneous applications, such as video-surveillance, remote delivery and connectivity provisioning in crowded events and emergency scenarios. Given their increasingly higher technology penetration rate, telco operators started looking at the sky as a new potential direction to enable a three-dimensional (3D) communication paradigm. However, designing flying mobile stations involves addressing a daunting number of challenges, such as an excessive on-board control overhead, variable battery drain and advanced antenna design. To this end, the newly-born Smart Surfaces technology may come to help: reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) may be flexibly installed on-board to control the terrestrial propagation environment from an elevated viewpoint by involving low-complex and battery-limited solutions. In this paper, we shed light on novel RIS-based use-cases, corresponding requirements, and potential solutions that might be adopted in future aerial communication infrastructures.

The disruptive reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology is steadily gaining relevance as a key element in future 6G networks. However, a one-size-fits-all RIS hardware design is yet to be defined due to many practical considerations. A major roadblock for currently available RISs is their inability to concurrently operate at multiple carrier frequencies, which would lead to redundant installations to support multiple radio access technologies (RATs). In this paper, we introduce FABRIS, a novel and practical multi-frequency RIS design. FABRIS is able to dynamically operate across different radio frequencies (RFs) by means of frequency-tunable antennas as unit cells with virtually no performance degradation when conventional approaches to RIS design and optimization fail. Remarkably, our design preserves a sufficiently narrow beamwidth as to avoid generating signal leakage in unwanted directions and a sufficiently high antenna efficiency in terms of scattering parameters. Indeed, FABRIS selects the RIS configuration that maximizes the signal at the intended target user equipment (UE) while minimizing leakage to non-intended neighboring UEs. Numerical results and full-wave simulations validate our proposed approach against a naive implementation that does not consider signal leakage resulting from multi-frequency antenna arrays.

Future generations of wireless networks will offer newfangled performance via unprecedented solutions: the metasurface innovation will drive such a revolution by posing control onto the surrounding propagation environment, always portrayed as a tamper-proof black-box. The RIS technology, envisioned as the discrete version of a metasurface, can be dynamically configured to alter the propagation properties of the im**ing signals by, e.g., steering the corresponding beams towards defined directions. This will unlock new application opportunities and deliver advanced end-user services. However, this fascinating solution comes at not negligible costs: RIS require ad-hoc design, deployment and management operations to be fully exploited. In this paper, we tackle the RIS placement problem from a theoretical viewpoint, showcasing a large-scale solution on synthetic topologies to improve communication performance while solving the "dead-zone" problem. Additionally, our mathematical framework is empirically validated within a realistic indoor scenario, the Rennes railway station, showing how a complex indoor propagation environment can be fully disciplined by an advanced RIS installation.

The roll-out phase of the next generation of mobile networks (5G) has started and operators are required to devise deployment solutions while pursuing localization accuracy maximization. Enabling location-based services is expected to be a unique selling point for service providers now able to deliver critical mobile services, e.g., autonomous driving, public safety, remote operations. In this paper, we propose a novel roll-out base station placement solution that, given a Throughput-Positioning Ratio (TPR) target, selects the location of new-generation base stations (among available candidate sites) such that the throughput and localization accuracy are jointly maximized. Moving away from the canonical position error bound (PEB) analysis, we develop a realistic framework in which each positioning measurement is affected by errors depending upon the actual wireless channel between the measuring base station and the target device. Our solution, referred to as LOKO, is a fast-converging algorithm that can be readily applied to current 5G (or future) roll-out processes. LOKO is validated by means of an exhaustive simulation campaign considering real existing deployments of a major European network operator as well as synthetic scenarios.

RISs revolutionize the traditional wireless communication paradigm by controlling the wave propagation properties of the im**ing signals as required. A major roadblock for RIS is though the need for a fast and complex control channel to continuously adapt to the ever-changing wireless channel conditions. In this paper, we ask ourselves the question: Would it be feasible to remove the need for control channels for RISs? We analyze the feasibility of devising Self-Configuring Smart Surfaces that can be easily and seamlessly installed throughout the environment, following the new Internet-of-Surfaces (IoS) paradigm, without requiring modifications of the deployed mobile network. To this aim, we design MARISA, a self-configuring metasurfaces absorption and reflection solution, and show that it can achieve a better-than-expected performance rivaling with control channel-driven RISs.

Various visions on the forthcoming sixth Generation (6G) networks point towards flexible connect-and-compute technologies to support future innovative services and the corresponding use cases. 6G should be capable to accommodate ever-evolving and heterogeneous applications, future regulations, and diverse user-, service-, and location-based requirements. A key element towards building smart and energy sustainable wireless systems beyond 5G is the Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (RIS), which offers programmable control and sha** of the wireless propagation environment.
Capitalizing on this technology potential, in this article we introduce two new concepts: i) wireless environment as a service, which leverages a novel RIS-empowered networking paradigm to trade off diverse, and usually conflicting, connectivity objectives; and ii) performance-boosted areas enabled by RIS-based connectivity, representing competing service provisioning areas that are highly spatially and temporally focused. We discuss the key technological enablers and research challenges with the proposed networking paradigm, and highlight the potential profound role of RISs in the recent Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) architecture.

The adoption of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) for public safety applications has skyrocketed in the last years. Leveraging on Physical Random Access Channel (PRACH) preambles, in this paper we pioneer a novel localization technique for UAVs equipped with cellular base stations used in emergency scenarios. We exploit the new concept of Orthogonal Time Frequency Space (OTFS) modulation (tolerant to channel Doppler spread caused by UAVs motion) to build a fully standards-compliant OTFS-modulated PRACH transmission and reception scheme able to perform time-of-arrival (ToA) measurements. First, we analyze such novel ToA ranging technique, both analytically and numerically, to accurately and iteratively derive the distance between localized users and the points traversed by the UAV along its trajectory. Then, we determine the optimal UAV speed as a trade-off between the accuracy of the ranging technique and the power needed by the UAV to reach and keep its speed during emergency operations. Finally, we demonstrate that our solution outperforms standard PRACH-based localization techniques in terms of Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) by about 20% in quasi-static conditions and up to 80% in high-mobility conditions.

Multi-access edge computing (MEC) emerges as an essential part of the upcoming Fifth Generation (5G) and future beyond-5G mobile communication systems. It adds computational power towards the edge of cellular networks, much closer to energy-constrained user devices, and therewith allows the users to offload tasks to the edge computing nodes for low-latency applications with very-limited battery consumption. However, due to the high dynamics of user demand and server load, task congestion may occur at the edge nodes resulting in long queuing delay. Such delays can significantly degrade the quality of experience (QoE) of some latency-sensitive applications, raise the risk of service outage, and cannot be efficiently resolved by conventional queue management solutions.
In this article, we study a latency-outage critical scenario, where users intend to limit the risk of latency outage. We propose an impatience-based queuing strategy for such users to intelligently choose between MEC offloading and local computation, allowing them to rationally renege from the task queue. The proposed approach is demonstrated by numerical simulations to be efficient for generic service model, when a perfect queue status information is available. For the practical case where the users obtain only imperfect queue status information, we design an optimal online learning strategy to enable its application in Poisson service scenarios.

Emerging wireless control applications demand for extremely high closed-loop reliability under strict latency constraints, which the conventional Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) solutions with static schedules fail to provide. To overcome this issue and enable data-link layer error control for ultra reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) services, we propose a novel protocol: the Closed-Loop ARQ (CLARQ), which forces to accomplish an information exchange round within a fixed loop-back latency, and dynamically re-allocates the remaining resource between uplink and downlink slots upon the result of last uplink transmission. The proposed method guarantees to meet the latency requirement, while delivering high communication reliability and power efficiency. It can be efficiently offline optimized by means of dynamic programming techniques, and is capable of real-time deployment with a low-cost implementation based on look-up tables. Numerical evaluations have verified that CLARQ outperforms baselines with significantly improved closed-loop reliability and reduced energy consumption. Especially, over a Rayleigh channel with 0dB mean SNR, it is able to provide a closed-loop error rate below 1e-7 within 10ms loop-back latency, which makes our proposal competitive for practical URLLC applications in future 5G-and-beyond networks.

Next generation mobile networks need to expand towards uncharted territories in order to enable the digital transformation of society. In this context, aerial devices such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are expected to address this gap in hard-to-reach locations. However, limited battery-life is an obstacle for the successful spread of such solutions. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) represent a promising solution addressing this challenge since on-board passive and lightweight controllable devices can efficiently reflect the signal propagation from the ground BSs towards specific target areas. In this paper, we focus on air-to-ground networks where UAVs equipped with RIS can fly over selected areas to provide connectivity. In particular, we study how to optimally compensate flight effects and propose RiFe as well as its practical implementation Fair-RiFe that automatically configure RIS parameters accounting for undesired UAV oscillations due to adverse atmospheric conditions. Dedicated \emph{network slices} are envisioned to satisfy the stringent requirements of advanced V2X services, such as autonomous driving, aimed at drastically reducing road casualties. However, as V2X services become more mission-critical, new solutions need to be devised to guarantee their successful service delivery even in exceptional situations, e.g. road accidents, congestion, etc. In this context, we propose $π$-ROAD, a \emph{deep learning} framework to automatically learn regular mobile traffic patterns along roads, detect non-recurring events and classify them by severity level. $π$-ROAD enables operators to \emph{proactively} instantiate dedicated \emph{Emergency Network Slices (ENS)} as needed while re-dimensioning the existing slices according to their service criticality level. Our framework is validated by means of real mobile network traces collected within $400~km$ of a highway in Europe and augmented with publicly available information on related road events. Network Slicing is expected to become a game changer in the upcoming 5G networks and beyond, enlarging the telecom business ecosystem through still-unexplored vertical industry profits. This implies that heterogeneous service level agreements (SLAs) must be guaranteed per slice given the multitude of predefined requirements. In this paper, we pioneer a novel radio slicing orchestration solution that simultaneously provides-latency and throughput guarantees in a multi-tenancy environment. Leveraging on a solid mathematical framework, we exploit the exploration-vs-exploitation paradigm by means of a multi-armed-bandit-based(MAB) orchestrator, LACO, that makes adaptive resource slicing decisions with no prior knowledge on the traffic demand or channel quality statistics. As opposed to traditional MAB methods that are blind to the underlying system, LACO relies on system structure information to expedite decisions. With the advent of revolutionary technologies, such as virtualization and softwarization, a novel concept for 5G networks and beyond has been unveiled: Network Slicing. Initially driven by the research community, standardization bodies as 3GPP have embraced it as a promising solution to revolutionize the traditional mobile telecommunication market by enabling new business models opportunities. Network Slicing is envisioned to open up the telecom market to new players such as Industry Verticals, e.g. automotive, smart factories, e-health, etc. Given the large number of potential new business players, dubbed as network tenants, novel solutions are required to accommodate their needs in a cost-efficient and secure manner. In this paper, we propose NSBchain, a novel network slicing brokering (NSB) solution, which leverages on the widely adopted Blockchain technology to address the new business models needs beyond traditional network sharing agreements. NSBchain defines a new entity, the Intermediate Broker (IB), which enables Infrastructure Providers (InPs) to allocate network resources to IBs through smart contracts and IBs to assign and re-distribute their resources among tenants in a secure, automated and scalable manner. We conducted an extensive performance evaluation by means of an open-source blockchain platform that proves the feasibility of our proposed framework considering a large number of tenants and two different consensus algorithms.

Natural disasters affect millions of people every year. Finding missing persons in the shortest possible time is of crucial importance to reduce the death toll. This task is especially challenging when victims are sparsely distributed in large and/or difficult-to-reach areas and cellular networks are down. In this paper we present SARDO, a drone-based search and rescue solution that exploits the high penetration rate of mobile phones in the society to localize missing people. SARDO is an autonomous, all-in-one drone-based mobile network solution that does not require infrastructure support or mobile phones modifications. It builds on novel concepts such as pseudo-trilateration combined with machine-learning techniques to efficiently locate mobile phones in a given area. Our results, with a prototype implementation in a field-trial, show that SARDO rapidly determines the location of mobile phones (~3 min/UE) in a given area with an accuracy of few tens of meters and at a low battery consumption cost (~5%). State-of-the-art localization solutions for disaster scenarios rely either on mobile infrastructure support or exploit onboard cameras for human/computer vision, IR, thermal-based localization. To the best of our knowledge, SARDO is the first drone-based cellular search-and-rescue solution able to accurately localize missing victims through mobile phones.

The combination of recent emerging technologies such as network function virtualization (NFV) and network programmability (SDN) gave birth to the novel Network Slicing paradigm. 5G networks consist of multi-tenant infrastructures capable of offering leased network "slices" to new customers (e.g., vertical industries) enabling a new telecom business model: Slice-as-a-Service (SlaaS). However, as the service demand gets increasingly dense, slice requests congestion may occur leading to undesired waiting periods. This may turn into impatient tenant behaviors that increase potential loss of the business attractiveness to customers. In this paper, we aim to i study the slicing admission control problem by means of a multi-queuing system for heterogeneous tenant requests, ii) derive its statistical behavior model, iii) find out the rational strategy of impatient tenants waiting in queue-based slice admission control systems, iv) prove mathematically and empirically the benefits of allowing infrastructure providers to share its information with the upcoming tenants, and v) provide a utility model for network slices admission optimization. Our results analyze the capability of the proposed SlaaS system to be approximately Markovian and evaluate its performance as compared to a baseline solution.

NFV management and orchestration (MANO) systems are being developed to meet the agile and flexible management requirements of virtualized network services in the 5G era and beyond. In this regard, ETSI ISG NFV has specified a standard NFV MANO system that is being used as a reference by MANO system vendors as well as open-source MANO projects. However, in the absence of MANO specific KPIs, it is difficult for users to make an informed decision on the choice of the MANO system better suited to meet their needs. Given the absence of any formal MANO specific KPIs on the basis of which a performance of a MANO system can be quantified, benchmarked and compared, users are left with simply comparing the claimed feature set. It is thus the motivation of this paper to highlight the challenges of testing and validating MANO systems in general, and propose MANO specific KPIs. Based on the proposed KPIs, we analyze and compare the performance of the two most popular open-source MANO projects, namely ONAP and OSM, using a complex open-source vCPE VNF and identify the features/performance gaps. In addition, we also provide a sketch of a test-jig that has been designed for benchmarking MANO systems.

Future wireless networks are expected to constitute a distributed intelligent wireless communications, sensing, and computing platform, which will have the challenging requirement of interconnecting the physical and digital worlds in a seamless and sustainable manner.
Currently, two main factors prevent wireless network operators from building such networks: 1) the lack of control of the wireless environment, whose impact on the radio waves cannot be customized, and 2) the current operation of wireless radios, which consume a lot of power because new signals are generated whenever data has to be transmitted.
In this paper, we challenge the usual "more data needs more power and emission of radio waves" status quo, and motivate that future wireless networks necessitate a smart radio environment: A transformative wireless concept, where the environmental objects are coated with artificial thin films of electromagnetic and reconfigurable material (that are referred to as intelligent reconfigurable meta-surfaces), which are capable of sensing the environment and of applying customized transformations to the radio waves. Smart radio environments have the potential to provide future wireless networks with uninterrupted wireless connectivity, and with the capability of transmitting data without generating new signals but recycling existing radio waves.
This paper overviews the current research efforts on smart radio environments, the enabling technologies to realize them in practice, the need of new communication-theoretic models for their analysis and design, and the long-term and open research issues to be solved towards their massive deployment. In a nutshell, this paper is focused on discussing how the availability of intelligent reconfigurable meta-surfaces will allow wireless network operators to redesign common and well-known network communication paradigms.

Recently released 5G networks empower the novel Network Slicing concept. %which enables novel business models; Network slicing introduces new business models such as allowing telecom providers to lease a virtualized slice of their infrastructure to tenants such as industry verticals, e.g. automotive, e-health, factories, etc. However, this new paradigm poses a major challenge when applied to Radio Access Networks (RAN): how to achieve revenue maximization while meeting the diverse service level agreements (SLAs) requested by the infrastructure tenants?
In this paper, we propose a new analytical framework, based on stochastic geometry theory, to model realistic RANs that leverage the business opportunities offered by network slicing. We mathematically prove the benefits of slicing radio access networks as compared to non-sliced infrastructures. Based on this, we design a new admission control functional block, STORNS, which takes decisions considering per slice SLA guaranteed average experienced throughput. A radio resource allocation strategy is introduced to optimally allocate transmit power and bandwidth (i.e., a slice of radio access resources) to the users of each infrastructure tenant. Numerical results are illustrated to validate our proposed solution in terms of potential spectral efficiency, and compare it against a non-slicing benchmark.

Time-domain Inter-Cell Interference Coordination (ICIC) is recognized as the main driver towards efficient and effective ultra-dense network deployments. Almost Blank Subframe (ABS), as key-example of ICIC, has been recently standardized so as to achieve high spectral efficiency. As we show in this article, adopting ABS implies non-trivial complexity to be effective in multicellular environments with heterogeneous cell coverage and user density. Nonetheless, no fairness determinism is guaranteed by ICIC and ABS in particular. Instead, we analytically show that a compound exploitation of ABS with outband sidelinks used for Device-to-Device (D2D) communications on unlicensed bands not only allows to abate the complexity of operating ABS, but also results in unexpectedly high levels of fairness. Based on the analysis, we formulate a convex optimization problem to stochastically make ABS decisions while providing proportional fairness guarantees. Our results prove that, compared to a legacy system, stochastically orchestration of ABS largely boosts fairness while retaining a notable throughput gain offered by mmWave outband sidelinks used for relay.

Recently, the specifications of the fifth generation (5G) of mobile networks have been released witnessing the industrial interest around the novel network slicing concept. This context is further enriched by the evolution of an emerging type of public cloud environment: the Slice-as-a-Service (SlaaS). Infrastructure providers or network operators deploy different admission strategy while processing network slice requests issued by infrastructure tenants based on service level agreements (SLAs) and current (and predicted) resource availability.
However, when the service demand will reasonably get dense, congestions of slice requests may occur leading to long waiting periods. This may turn into impatient tenant behaviors that mitigate potential loss. This paper studies the rational strategies of impatient tenants waiting in queue-based slice admission control system, proving mathematically and empirically the benefits of allowing infrastructure provider to share its information with the upcoming tenants.

Autonomous management and orchestration (MANO) of virtualized resources and services, especially in large-scale Network Function Virtualization (NFV) environments, is a big challenge owing to the stringent delay and performance requirements expected of a variety of network services. The Quality-of-Decisions (QoD) of a Management and Orchestration (MANO) system depends on the quality and timeliness of the information received from the underlying monitoring system. The data generated by monitoring systems is a significant contributor to the network and processing load of MANO systems, impacting thus their performance. This raises a unique challenge: how to jointly optimize the QoD of MANO systems while at the same minimizing their monitoring loads at runtime? This is the main focus of this paper.
In this context, we propose a novel automated NFV orchestration solution, namely z-TORCH (zero Touch Orchestration) that jointly optimizes the orchestration and monitoring processes by exploiting machine-learning-based techniques. The objective is to enhance the QoD of MANO systems achieving a near-optimal placement of Virtualized Network Functions (VNFs) at minimum monitoring costs.

The automotive and telco industries have taken an investment bet on the connected car market, pushing for the digital transformation of the sector by exploiting recent Information and Communication Technology (ICT) progress. As ICT developments continue, it is expected that the technology advancements will be able to fulfill the sophisticated requirements for vehicular use cases, such as low latency and reliable communications for safety, high computing power to process large amount of sensed data, and increased bandwidth for on-board infotainment.
The aforementioned requirements have received significant focus during the ongoing definition of the 3GPP 5G mobile standards, where there has been a drive to facilitate vertical industries such as automotive, in addition to providing the core aspects of the communication infrastructure. Of the technology enablers for 5G, Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) can be considered essential. That is, a cloud environment located at the edge of the network, in proximity of the end-users and coupled with the service provider's network infrastructure. Even before 5G is rolled out, current mobile networks can already target support for these challenging use cases using MEC technology. This is because MEC is able to fulfill low latency and high bandwidth requirements, and, in addition, it lends itself to be deployed at the vertical industrial sector premises such as road infrastructure, air/sea ports, smart factories, etc., thus, bringing computing power where it is needed most.
This work showcases the automotive use cases that are relevant for MEC, providing insights into the technologies specified and investigated by the ETSI MEC Industry Specification Group (ISG), who were the pioneer in creating a standardized computing platform for advanced mobile networks with regards to network edge related use cases.
