Recently, we have seen growing interest among patients with chronic conditions to track their health-related data. There are many wearable devices available to track different health data. However, tracking pain is mostly done by using pen and paper or mobile apps. In collaboration with a healthcare professional we designed a portable pain tracker, PainBit. To gain an understanding of patients' perspectives on our tracker, we conducted two case studies with patients living with chronic pain. We asked patients to use PainBit for two weeks and later conducted semi-structured interviews with them. Patients found PainBit useful for tracking their pain and they preferred using a physical device, PainBit, to track their pain over using a mobile phone. Patients suggested reducing the size and weight of PainBit in the next iterations. We report on the lessons learnt through our design process and the evaluation studies.

Tiny Object Detection is challenging due to small size, low resolution, occlusion, background clutter, lighting conditions and small object-to-image ratio. Further, object detection methodologies often make underlying assumption that both training and testing data remain congruent. However, this presumption often leads to decline in performance when model is applied to out-of-domain(unseen) data. Techniques like synthetic image generation are employed to improve model performance by leveraging variations in input data. Such an approach typically presumes access to 3D-rendered datasets. In contrast, we propose a novel two-stage methodology Synthetic Randomized Image Augmentation (SRIA), carefully devised to enhance generalization capabilities of models encountering 2D datasets, particularly with lower resolution which is more practical in real-world scenarios. The first stage employs a weakly supervised technique to generate pixel-level segmentation masks. Subsequently, the second stage generates a batch-wise synthesis of artificial images, carefully designed with an array of diverse augmentations. The efficacy of proposed technique is illustrated on challenging foreign object debris (FOD) detection. We compare our results with several SOTA models including CenterNet, SSD, YOLOv3, YOLOv4, YOLOv5, and Outer Vit on a publicly available FOD-A dataset. We also construct an out-of-distribution test set encompassing 800 annotated images featuring a corpus of ten common categories. Notably, by harnessing merely 1.81% of objects from source training data and amalgamating with 29 runway background images, we generate 2227 synthetic images. Subsequent model retraining via transfer learning, utilizing enriched dataset generated by domain randomization, demonstrates significant improvement in detection accuracy. We report that detection accuracy improved from an initial 41% to 92% for OOD test set.

AAC can be observed on Vertebral Fracture Assessment (VFA) scans acquired using Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) machines. Thus, the automatic quantification of AAC on VFA DXA scans may be used to screen for CVD risks, allowing early interventions. In this research, we formulate the quantification of AAC as an ordinal regression problem. We propose a novel Supervised Contrastive Ordinal Loss (SCOL) by incorporating a label-dependent distance metric with existing supervised contrastive loss to leverage the ordinal information inherent in discrete AAC regression labels. We develop a Dual-encoder Contrastive Ordinal Learning (DCOL) framework that learns the contrastive ordinal representation at global and local levels to improve the feature separability and class diversity in latent space among the AAC-24 genera. We evaluate the performance of the proposed framework using two clinical VFA DXA scan datasets and compare our work with state-of-the-art methods. Furthermore, for predicted AAC scores, we provide a clinical analysis to predict the future risk of a Major Acute Cardiovascular Event (MACE). Our results demonstrate that this learning enhances inter-class separability and strengthens intra-class consistency, which results in predicting the high-risk AAC classes with high sensitivity and high accuracy.

One perspective to view the economic development of cities is through the presence of multinational firms; how subsidiaries of various organizations are set up throughout the globe and how cities are connected to each other through these networks of multinational firms. Analysis of these networks can reveal interesting economical and spatial trends, as well as help us understand the importance of cities in national and regional economic development. This paper aims to study networks of cities formed due to the linkages of multinational firms over a decade (from 2010 to 2019). More specifically we are interested in analyzing the growth and stability of various cities in terms of the connections they form with other cities over time. Our results can be summarized into two key findings: First, we ascertain the central position of several cities due to their economically stable connections; Second, we successfully identify cities that have evolved over the past decade as the presence of multinational firms has increased in these cities.

Accurate segmentation of mandibular canals in lower jaws is important in dental implantology. Medical experts determine the implant position and dimensions manually from 3D CT images to avoid damaging the mandibular nerve inside the canal. In this paper, we propose a novel dual-stage deep learning-based scheme for the automatic segmentation of the mandibular canal. Particularly, we first enhance the CBCT scans by employing the novel histogram-based dynamic windowing scheme, which improves the visibility of mandibular canals. After enhancement, we design 3D deeply supervised attention U-Net architecture for localizing the volumes of interest (VOIs), which contain the mandibular canals (i.e., left and right canals). Finally, we employed the multi-scale input residual U-Net architecture (MS-R-UNet) to segment the mandibular canals using VOIs accurately. The proposed method has been rigorously evaluated on 500 scans. The results demonstrate that our technique outperforms the current state-of-the-art segmentation performance and robustness methods.

In this paper, we address the issue of privacy in 5th generation (5G) driven Internet of Things (IoT) and related technologies while presenting a comparison with previous technologies for communication and unaddressed issues in 5G. Initially, an overview of 5G driven IoT is presented with details about both technologies and eventually leading to problems that 5th generation will face. Details about 5G are also presented while comparing them with previous technologies. The architecture of 5G is presented hence explaining layers of 5G and technologies like SDN, NFV and cloud computing that compose these layers. The architecture for 5g based IoT is also presented for providing visual understanding as well as explained based on how this addresses the issues present in 4G. Privacy is highlighted in 5G driven IoT while providing details about how SDN, NFV and cloud computing helps in elimination of this issue. The issues presented will be compared with 4G based IoT and solutions are provided about mitigation of these issues particularly bandwidth and security. Moreover, techniques used by 4G and 5G technologies for handling the issues of privacy in IoT are presented in a nutshell as a table. Paper also presents a detailed overview of technologies making 5G possible meanwhile giving an explanation about how these technologies resolve privacy issues in 5G.

This paper argues that there are three fundamental challenges that need to be overcome in order to foster the adoption of big data technologies in non-computer science related disciplines: addressing issues of accessibility of such technologies for non-computer scientists, supporting the ad hoc exploration of large data sets with minimal effort and the availability of lightweight web-based frameworks for quick and easy analytics. In this paper, we address the above three challenges through the development of 'BigExcel', a three tier web-based framework for exploring big data to facilitate the management of user interactions with large data sets, the construction of queries to explore the data set and the management of the infrastructure. The feasibility of BigExcel is demonstrated through two Yahoo Sandbox datasets. The first dataset is the Yahoo Buzz Score data set we use for quantitatively predicting trending technologies and the second is the Yahoo n-gram corpus we use for qualitatively inferring the coverage of important events.
