Stable partitioned techniques for simulating unsteady fluid-structure interaction (FSI) are known to be computationally expensive when high added-mass is involved. Multiple coupling strategies have been developed to accelerate these simulations, but often use predictors in the form of simple finite-difference extrapolations. In this work, we propose a non-intrusive data-driven predictor that couples reduced-order models of both the solid and fluid subproblems, providing an initial guess for the nonlinear problem of the next time step calculation. Each reduced order model is composed of a nonlinear encoder-regressor-decoder architecture and is equipped with an adaptive update strategy that adds robustness for extrapolation. In doing so, the proposed methodology leverages physics-based insights from high-fidelity solvers, thus establishing a physics-aware machine learning predictor. Using three strongly coupled FSI examples, this study demonstrates the improved convergence obtained with the new predictor and the overall computational speedup realized compared to classical approaches.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is pivotal in radiology, offering non-invasive and high-quality insights into the human body. Precise segmentation of MRIs into different organs and tissues would be highly beneficial since it would allow for a higher level of understanding of the image content and enable important measurements, which are essential for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment planning. Specifically, segmenting bones in MRI would allow for more quantitative assessments of musculoskeletal conditions, while such assessments are largely absent in current radiological practice. The difficulty of bone MRI segmentation is illustrated by the fact that limited algorithms are publicly available for use, and those contained in the literature typically address a specific anatomic area. In our study, we propose a versatile, publicly available deep-learning model for bone segmentation in MRI across multiple standard MRI locations. The proposed model can operate in two modes: fully automated segmentation and prompt-based segmentation. Our contributions include (1) collecting and annotating a new MRI dataset across various MRI protocols, encompassing over 300 annotated volumes and 8485 annotated slices across diverse anatomic regions; (2) investigating several standard network architectures and strategies for automated segmentation; (3) introducing SegmentAnyBone, an innovative foundational model-based approach that extends Segment Anything Model (SAM); (4) comparative analysis of our algorithm and previous approaches; and (5) generalization analysis of our algorithm across different anatomical locations and MRI sequences, as well as an external dataset. The main goal of this work is to develop a data-driven Reduced Order Model (ROM) strategy from high-fidelity simulation result data of a Full Order Model (FOM). The goal is to predict at lower computational cost the time evolution of solutions of Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) problems.
For some FSI applications, the elastic solid FOM (often chosen as quasi-static) can take far more computational time than the fluid one. In this context, for the sake of performance one could only derive a ROM for the structure and try to achieve a partitioned FOM fluid solver coupled with a ROM solid one. In this paper, we present a data-driven partitioned ROM on two study cases: (i) a simplified 1D-1D FSI problem representing an axisymmetric elastic model of an arterial vessel, coupled with an incompressible fluid flow; (ii) an incompressible 2D wake flow over a cylinder facing an elastic solid with two flaps. We evaluate the accuracy and performance of the proposed ROM-FOM strategy on these cases while investigating the effects of the model's hyperparameters. We demonstrate a high prediction accuracy and significant speedup achievements using this strategy.

Wordnets are indispensable tools for various natural language processing applications. Unfortunately, wordnets get outdated, and producing or updating wordnets can be slow and costly in terms of time and resources. This problem intensifies for low-resource languages. This study proposes a method for word sense induction and synset induction using only two linguistic resources, namely, an unlabeled corpus and a sentence embeddings-based language model. The resulting sense inventory and synonym sets can be used in automatically creating a wordnet. We applied this method on a corpus of Filipino text. The sense inventory and synsets were evaluated by matching them with the sense inventory of the machine translated Princeton WordNet, as well as comparing the synsets to the Filipino WordNet. This study empirically shows that the 30% of the induced word senses are valid and 40% of the induced synsets are valid in which 20% are novel synsets.

Research ethics in Information and Communications Technology has seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years. Although a number of general ethics standards have been issued, cyber security specifically has yet to see one. Furthermore, such standards are often abstract, lacking in guidance on specific practices. In this paper we compare peer-reviewed ethical analyses of condemned research papers to analyses derived from a knowledge base (KB) of concrete cyber security research ethics best practices. The KB we employ was compiled in prior work from a large random survey of research papers. We demonstrate preliminary evidence that such a KB can be used to yield comparable or more extensive ethical analyses of published cyber security research than expert application of standards like the Menlo Report. We extend the ethical analyses of the reviewed manuscripts, and calculate measures of the efficiency with which the expert versus KB methods yield ethical insights.
