Human tissues are highly organized structures with specific collagen fiber arrangements varying from point to point. The effects of such heterogeneity play an important role for tissue function, and hence it is of critical to discover and understand the distribution of such fiber orientations from experimental measurements, such as the digital image correlation data. To this end, we introduce the heterogeneous peridynamic neural operator (HeteroPNO) approach, for data-driven constitutive modeling of heterogeneous anisotropic materials. The goal is to learn both a nonlocal constitutive law together with the material microstructure, in the form of a heterogeneous fiber orientation field, from loading field-displacement field measurements. To this end, we propose a two-phase learning approach. Firstly, we learn a homogeneous constitutive law in the form of a neural network-based kernel function and a nonlocal bond force, to capture complex homogeneous material responses from data. Then, in the second phase we reinitialize the learnt bond force and the kernel function, and training them together with a fiber orientation field for each material point. Owing to the state-based peridynamic skeleton, our HeteroPNO-learned material models are objective and have the balance of linear and angular momentum guaranteed. Moreover, the effects from heterogeneity and nonlinear constitutive relationship are captured by the kernel function and the bond force respectively, enabling physical interpretability. As a result, our HeteroPNO architecture can learn a constitutive model for a biological tissue with anisotropic heterogeneous response undergoing large deformation regime. Moreover, the framework is capable to provide displacement and stress field predictions for new and unseen loading instances.

Smart healthcare, an integral element of connected living, plays a pivotal role in fulfilling a fundamental human need. The burgeoning field of smart healthcare is poised to generate substantial revenue in the foreseeable future. Its multifaceted framework encompasses vital components such as the Internet of Things (IoT), medical sensors, artificial intelligence (AI), edge and cloud computing, as well as next-generation wireless communication technologies. Many research papers discuss smart healthcare and healthcare more broadly. Numerous nations have strategically deployed the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) alongside other measures to combat the propagation of COVID-19. This combined effort has not only enhanced the safety of frontline healthcare workers but has also augmented the overall efficacy in managing the pandemic, subsequently reducing its impact on human lives and mortality rates. Remarkable strides have been made in both applications and technology within the IoMT domain. However, it is imperative to acknowledge that this technological advancement has introduced certain challenges, particularly in the realm of security. The rapid and extensive adoption of IoMT worldwide has magnified issues related to security and privacy. These encompass a spectrum of concerns, ranging from replay attacks, man-in-the-middle attacks, impersonation, privileged insider threats, remote hijacking, password guessing, and denial of service (DoS) attacks, to malware incursions. In this comprehensive review, we undertake a comparative analysis of existing strategies designed for the detection and prevention of malware in IoT environments.

Blockchain technology has revolutionized the financial landscape, with cryptocurrencies gaining widespread adoption for their decentralized and transparent nature. As the sentiment expressed on social media platforms can significantly influence cryptocurrency discussions and market movements, sentiment analysis has emerged as a crucial tool for understanding public opinion and predicting market trends. Motivated by the aim to enhance sentiment analysis accuracy in the cryptocurrency domain, this paper investigates fine-tuning techniques on large language models. This paper also investigates the efficacy of supervised fine-tuning and instruction-based fine-tuning on large language models for unseen tasks. Experimental results demonstrate a significant average zero-shot performance gain of 40% after fine-tuning, highlighting the potential of this technique in optimizing pre-trained language model efficiency. Additionally, the impact of instruction tuning on models of varying scales is examined, revealing that larger models benefit from instruction tuning, achieving the highest average accuracy score of 75.16%. In contrast, smaller-scale models may experience reduced generalization due to the complete utilization of model capacity. To gain deeper insight about how instruction works with these language models, this paper presents an experimental investigation into the response of an instruction-based model under different instruction tuning setups. The investigation demonstrates that the model achieves an average accuracy score of 72.38% for short and simple instructions. This performance significantly outperforms its accuracy under long and complex instructions by over 12%, thereby effectively highlighting the profound significance of instruction characteristics in maximizing model performance.

Blockchain technology is among the fastest-growing technologies in the world today. It has been adopted in diverse areas but mostly in financial systems, such as Bitcoin cryptocurrency. Therefore, it is a niche that has attracted interest from researchers from various fields, including computer science. Other areas where Blockchain is being embraced are the Smart Grid and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, among others. While it is all good and improving many areas of applications, Blockchain still has some shortcomings. For example, it is not designed for high scalability when accommodating normal transactions. On the other hand, a parallel technology that has diverse applications in distributed networks better known as edge computing has emerged. Its main advantage is that it increases the speed of pf processes within those networks. However, like Blockchain, edge computing has its shortcomings. Its security systems and management systems have been found to be wanting. Hence the idea to integrate the two technologies and take advantage of their strengths. A blend of the two would lead to advanced network servers, huge data storage, and heightened security in transactions. However, this integration will best happen when some measures are taken. For example, there is a need to address scalability, resource management satisfactorily, and the security of the systems. To solve the integration problem, a decentralized Blockchain-based model of Edge computing is proposed in this paper.

Head-mounted device-based human-computer interaction often requires egocentric recognition of hand gestures and fingertips detection. In this paper, a unified approach of egocentric hand gesture recognition and fingertip detection is introduced. The proposed algorithm uses a single convolutional neural network to predict the probabilities of finger class and positions of fingertips in one forward propagation. Instead of directly regressing the positions of fingertips from the fully connected layer, the ensemble of the position of fingertips is regressed from the fully convolutional network. Subsequently, the ensemble average is taken to regress the final position of fingertips. Since the whole pipeline uses a single network, it is significantly fast in computation. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms the existing fingertip detection approaches including the Direct Regression and the Heatmap-based framework. The effectiveness of the proposed method is also shown in-the-wild scenario as well as in a use-case of virtual reality.

In this study, we present a non-intrusive reduced order modeling (ROM) framework for large-scale quasi-stationary systems. The framework proposed herein exploits the time series prediction capability of long short-term memory (LSTM) recurrent neural network such that: (i) in the training phase, the LSTM model is trained on the modal coefficients extracted from the high-resolution data using proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) transform, and (ii) in the testing phase, the trained model predicts the modal coefficients for the total time recursively based on the initial time history. To illustrate the predictive performance of the proposed framework, the mean flow fields and time series response of the field values are reconstructed from the predicted modal coefficients by using an inverse POD transform. As a representative benchmark test case, we consider a two-dimensional quasi-geostrophic (QG) ocean circulation model which, in general, displays an enormous range of fluctuating spatial and temporal scales. We first illustrate that the conventional Galerkin projection based ROM of such systems requires a high number of POD modes to obtain a stable flow physics. In addition, ROM-GP does not seem to capture the intermittent bursts appearing in the dynamics of the first few most energetic modes. However, the proposed non-intrusive ROM framework based on LSTM (ROM-LSTM) yields a stable solution even for a small number of POD modes. We also observe that the ROM-LSTM model is able to capture quasi-periodic intermittent bursts accurately, and yields a stable and accurate mean flow dynamics using the time history of a few previous time states, denoted as the lookback time-window in this paper. Our findings suggest that the proposed ROM framework is capable of predicting noisy nonlinear fluid flows in an extremely efficient way compared to the conventional projection based ROM.

In the Internet, ubiquitous presence of redundant, unedited, raw videos has made video summarization an important problem. Traditional methods of video summarization employ a heuristic set of hand-crafted features, which in many cases fail to capture subtle abstraction of a scene. This paper presents a deep learning method that maps the context of a video to the importance of a scene similar to that is perceived by humans. In particular, a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based architecture is proposed to mimic the frame-level shot importance for user-oriented video summarization. The weights and biases of the CNN are trained extensively through off-line processing, so that it can provide the importance of a frame of an unseen video almost instantaneously. Experiments on estimating the shot importance is carried out using the publicly available database TVSum50. It is shown that the performance of the proposed network is substantially better than that of commonly referred feature-based methods for estimating the shot importance in terms of mean absolute error, absolute error variance, and relative F-measure.

Automatic prediction of continuous-level emotional state requires selection of suitable affective features to develop a regression system based on supervised machine learning. This paper investigates the performance of features statistically learned using convolutional neural networks for instantaneously predicting the continuous dimensions of emotional states. Features with minimum redundancy and maximum relevancy are chosen by using the mutual information-based selection process. The performance of frame-by-frame prediction of emotional state using the moderate length features as proposed in this paper is evaluated on spontaneous and naturalistic human-human conversation of RECOLA database. Experimental results show that the proposed model can be used for instantaneous prediction of emotional state with an accuracy higher than traditional audio or video features that are used for affective computation.

This paper introduces analogical and deductive methodologies for the design medical processor units (MPUs). From the study of evolution of numerous earlier processors, we derive the basis for the architecture of MPUs. These specialized processors perform unique medical functions encoded as medical operational codes (mopcs). From a pragmatic perspective, MPUs function very close to CPUs. Both processors have unique operation codes that command the hardware to perform a distinct chain of subprocesses upon operands and generate a specific result unique to the opcode and the operand(s). In medical environments, MPU decodes the mopcs and executes a series of medical sub-processes and sends out secondary commands to the medical machine. Whereas operands in a typical computer system are numerical and logical entities, the operands in medical machine are objects such as such as patients, blood samples, tissues, operating rooms, medical staff, medical bills, patient payments, etc. We follow the functional overlap between the two processes and evolve the design of medical computer systems and networks.
