In recent years, there has been a significant expansion in the Internet of Things (IoT), with a growing number of devices being connected to the internet. This has led to an increase in data collection and analysis as well as the development of new technologies and applications. The rise of IoT has also brought about new challenges, such as security concerns and energy efficiency. This study investigates a layered IoT architecture that combines fog and cloud computing, aiming to assess the impact of service placement on energy efficiency. Through simulations, we analyse energy use across Access Fog, Metro Fog, and Cloud Data Centre layers for different IoT request volumes. Findings indicate that Access Fog is optimal for single requests, while Metro Fog efficiently manages higher demands from multiple devices. The study emphasizes the need for adaptive service deployment, responsive to network load variations, to improve energy efficiency. Hence, we propose the implementation of dynamic service placement strategies within Internet of Things (IoT) environments.

In this paper, we propose incorporating Optical Wireless Communication (OWC) and Passive Optical Network (PON) technologies into next generation spine-and-leaf Data Centre Networks (DCNs). In this work, OWC systems are used to connect the Data Centre (DC) racks through Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) Infrared (IR) transceivers. The transceivers are placed on top of the racks and at distributed Access Points (APs) in the ceiling. Each transceiver on a rack is connected to a leaf switch that connects the servers within the rack. We replace the spine switches by Optical Line Terminal (OLT) and Network Interface Cards (NIC) in the APs to achieve the desired connectivity. We benchmark the power consumption of the proposed OWC-PON-based spine-and-leaf DC against traditional spine-and-leaf DC and report 46% reduction in the power consumption when considering eight racks.

Optical Wireless Communication networks (OWC) has emerged as a promising technology that enables high-speed and reliable communication bandwidth for a variety of applications. In this work, we investigated applying Random Linear Network Coding (RLNC) over NOMA-based OWC networks to improve the performance of the proposed high density indoor optical wireless network where users are divided into multicast groups, and each group contains users that slightly differ in their channel gains. Moreover, a fixed power allocation strategy is considered to manage interference among these groups and to avoid complexity. The performance of the proposed RLNC-NOMA scheme is evaluated in terms of average bit error rate and ergodic sum rate versus the power allocation ratio factor. The results show that the proposed scheme is more suitable for the considered network compared to the traditional NOMA and orthogonal transmission schemes.

Recently, Optical wireless communication (OWC) have been considered as a key element in the next generation of wireless communications due to its potential in supporting unprecedented communication speeds. In this paper, infrared lasers referred to as vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) are used as transmitters sending information to multiple users. In OWC, rate-maximization optimization problems are usually complex due to the high number of optical access points (APs) needed to ensure coverage. Therefore, practical solutions with low computational time are essential to cope with frequent updates in user-requirements that might occur. In this context, we formulate an optimization problem to determine the optimal user association and resource allocation in the network, while the serving time is partitioned into a series of time periods. Therefore, cooperative ANN models are designed to estimate and predict the association and resource allocation variables for each user such that sub-optimal solutions can be obtained within a certain period of time prior to its actual starting, which makes the solutions valid and in accordance with the demands of the users at a given time. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed model in maximizing the sum rate of the network compared with counterpart models. Moreover, ANN-based solutions are close to the optimal ones with low computational time.

Optical wireless communication (OWC) has the potential to provide high communication speeds that support the massive use of the Internet that is expected in the near future. In OWC, optical access points (APs) are deployed on the celling to serve multiple users. In this context, efficient multiple access schemes are required to share the resources among the users and align multi-user interference. Recently, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been studied to serve multiple users simultaneously using the same resources, while a different power level is allocated to each user. Despite the acceptable performance of NOMA, users might experience a high packet loss due to high noise, which results from the use of successive interference cancelation (SIC). In this work, random linear network coding (RLNC) is proposed to enhance the performance of NOMA in an optical wireless network where users are divided into multicast groups, and each group contains users that slightly differ in their channel gains. Moreover, a fixed power allocation (FPA) strategy is considered among these groups to avoid complexity. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated in terms of total packet success probability. The results show that the proposed scheme is more suitable for the network considered compared to other benchmark schemes such as traditional NOMA and orthogonal transmission schemes. Moreover, the total packet success probability is highly affected by the level of power allocated to each group in all the scenarios.

Optical wireless communication (OWC) is a promising technology that has the potential to provide Tb/s aggregate rates. In this paper, interference management is studied in a Laser-based optical wireless network where vertical-cavity surface-emitting (VCSEL) lasers are used for data transmission. In particular, rate splitting (RS) and hierarchical rate splitting (HRS) are proposed to align multi-user interference, while maximizing the multiplexing gain of the network. Basically, RS serves multiple users simultaneously by splitting a message of a user into common and private messages, each message with a certain level of power, while on the other side users decode their messages following a specific methodology. The performance of the conventional RS scheme is limited in high density wireless networks. Therefore, the HRS scheme is developed aiming to achieve high rates where users are divided into multiple groups, and a new message called outer common message is used for managing inter-group interference. We formulate an optimization problem that addresses power allocation among the messages of the HRS scheme to further enhance the performance of the network. The results show that the proposed approach provides high achievable rates compared with the conventional RS and HRS schemes in different scenarios.

In recent years, the demand for high speed wireless networking has increased considerably due to the enormous number of devices connected to the Internet. In this context, optical wireless communication (OWC) has received tremendous interest in the context of next generation wireless networks where OWC offers a huge unlicensed bandwidth using optical bands. OWC systems are directional and can naturally provide multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) configurations serving multiple users using a high number of transmitters in the indoor environment to ensure coverage. Therefore, multiuser interference must be managed efficiently to enhance the performance of OWC networks considering different metrics. A transmission scheme referred to as blind interference alignment (BIA) is proposed for OWC systems to maximize the multiplexing gain without the need for channel state information (CSI) at the transmitters, which is difficult to achieve in MIMO scenarios. However, standard BIA avoids the need for CSI at the cost of requiring channel coherence time large enough for transmitting the whole transmission block. Moreover, the methodology of BIA results in increased noise with increase in the number of transmitters and users. Therefore, various network topologies such as network centric (NC) and user centric (UC) designs are proposed to relax the limitations of BIA where these topologies divide the receiving area into multiple clusters. The results show a significant enhancement in the performance of topological BIA compared with standard BIA.

Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) have demonstrated suitability for data transmission in indoor optical wireless communication (OWC) systems due to the high modulation bandwidth and low manufacturing cost of these sources. Specifically, resource allocation is one of the major challenges that can affect the performance of multi-user optical wireless systems. In this paper, an optimisation problem is formulated to optimally assign each user to an optical access point (AP) composed of multiple VCSELs within a VCSEL array at a certain time to maximise the signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR). In this context, a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model is introduced to solve this optimisation problem. Despite the optimality of the MILP model, it is considered impractical due to its high complexity, high memory and full system information requirements. Therefore, reinforcement Learning (RL) is considered, which recently has been widely investigated as a practical solution for various optimization problems in cellular networks due to its ability to interact with environments with no previous experience. In particular, a Q-learning (QL) algorithm is investigated to perform resource management in a steerable VCSEL-based OWC systems. The results demonstrate the ability of the QL algorithm to achieve optimal solutions close to the MILP model. Moreover, the adoption of beam steering, using holograms implemented by exploiting liquid crystal devices, results in further enhancement in the performance of the network considered.

In this paper, laser sources, in particular, vertical-cavity surface-emitting (VCSEL) lasers are used for data transmission due to their high modulation speed compared with light emitting diode (LED) sources. To manage multi-user interference, rate splitting (RS) is implemented where the message of a user is split into common and private parts. However, the performance of RS is limited in high density networks. Therefore, hierarchical rate splitting (HRS) particularly suited in high density networks is considered. The results demonstrate the high data rate achieved by using VCSELs. Moreover, HRS is more suitable for achieving high performance in optical networks compared with RS.

Visible Light Communication (VLC) has been widely investigated during the last decade due to its ability to provide high data rates with low power consumption. In general, resource management is an important issue in cellular networks that can highly effect their performance. In this paper, an optimisation problem is formulated to assign each user to an optimal access point and a wavelength at a given time. This problem can be solved using mixed integer linear programming (MILP). However, using MILP is not considered a practical solution due to its complexity and memory requirements. In addition, accurate information must be provided to perform the resource allocation. Therefore, the optimisation problem is reformulated using reinforcement learning (RL), which has recently received tremendous interest due to its ability to interact with any environment without prior knowledge. In this paper, we investigate solving the resource allocation optimisation problem in VLC systems using the basic Q-learning algorithm. Two scenarios are simulated to compare the results with the previously proposed MILP model. The results demonstrate the ability of the Q-learning algorithm to provide optimal solutions close to the MILP model without prior knowledge of the system.
