Development of a Deep Learning Method to Identify Acute Ischemic Stroke Lesions on Brain CT

Computed Tomography (CT) is commonly used to image acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients, but its interpretation by radiologists is time-consuming and subject to inter-observer variability. Deep learning (DL) techniques can provide automated CT brain scan assessment, but usually require annotated images. Aiming to develop a DL method for AIS using labelled but not annotated CT brain scans from patients with AIS, we designed a convolutional neural network-based DL algorithm using routinely-collected CT brain scans from the Third International Stroke Trial (IST-3), which were not acquired using strict research protocols. The DL model aimed to detect AIS lesions and classify the side of the brain affected. We explored the impact of AIS lesion features, background brain appearances, and timing on DL performance. From 5772 unique CT scans of 2347 AIS patients (median age 82), 54% had visible AIS lesions according to expert labelling. Our best-performing DL method achieved 72% accuracy for lesion presence and side. Lesions that were larger (80% accuracy) or multiple (87% accuracy for two lesions, 100% for three or more), were better detected. Follow-up scans had 76% accuracy, while baseline scans 67% accuracy. Chronic brain conditions reduced accuracy, particularly non-stroke lesions and old stroke lesions (32% and 31% error rates respectively). DL methods can be designed for AIS lesion detection on CT using the vast quantities of routinely-collected CT brain scan data. Ultimately, this should lead to more robust and widely-applicable methods.

We discuss the inadequacy of covariances/correlations and other measures in L2 as relative distance metrics under some conditions. We propose a computationally simple heuristic to transform a map based on standard principal component analysis (PCA) (when the variables are asymptotically Gaussian) into an entropy-based map where distances are based on mutual information (MI). Rescaling Principal Component based distances using MI allows a representation of relative statistical associations when, as in genetics, it is applied on bit measurements between individuals' genomic mutual information.
This entropy rescaled PCA, while preserving order relationships (along a dimension), changes the relative distances to make them linear to information. We show the effect on the entire world population and some subsamples, which leads to significant differences with the results of current research.

COVID-19 has caused thousands of deaths around the world and also resulted in a large international economic disruption. Identifying the pathways associated with this illness can help medical researchers to better understand the properties of the condition. This process can be carried out by analyzing the medical records. It is crucial to develop tools and models that can aid researchers with this process in a timely manner. However, medical records are often unstructured clinical notes, and this poses significant challenges to develo** the automated systems. In this article, we propose a pipeline to aid practitioners in analyzing clinical notes and revealing the pathways associated with this disease. Our pipeline relies on topological properties and consists of three steps: 1) pre-processing the clinical notes to extract the salient concepts, 2) constructing a feature space of the patients to characterize the extracted concepts, and finally, 3) leveraging the topological properties to distill the available knowledge and visualize the result. Our experiments on a publicly available dataset of COVID-19 clinical notes testify that our pipeline can indeed extract meaningful pathways.

Network Structure, Efficiency, and Performance in WikiProjects

The internet has enabled collaborations at a scale never before possible, but the best practices for organizing such large collaborations are still not clear. Wikipedia is a visible and successful example of such a collaboration which might offer insight into what makes large-scale, decentralized collaborations successful. We analyze the relationship between the structural properties of WikiProject coeditor networks and the performance and efficiency of those projects. We confirm the existence of an overall performance-efficiency trade-off, while observing that some projects are higher than others in both performance and efficiency, suggesting the existence factors correlating positively with both. Namely, we find an association between low-degree coeditor networks and both high performance and high efficiency. We also confirm results seen in previous numerical and small-scale lab studies: higher performance with less skewed node distributions, and higher performance with shorter path lengths. We use agent-based models to explore possible mechanisms for degree-dependent performance and efficiency. We present a novel local-majority learning strategy designed to satisfy properties of real-world collaborations. The local-majority strategy as well as a localized conformity-based strategy both show degree-dependent performance and efficiency, but in opposite directions, suggesting that these factors depend on both network structure and learning strategy. Our results suggest possible benefits to decentralized collaborations made of smaller, more tightly-knit teams, and that these benefits may be modulated by the particular learning strategies in use.

Targeted attacks against network infrastructure are notoriously difficult to guard against. In the case of communication networks, such attacks can leave users vulnerable to censorship and surveillance, even when cryptography is used. Much of the existing work on network fault-tolerance focuses on random faults and does not apply to adversarial faults (attacks). Centralized networks have single points of failure by definition, leading to a growing popularity in decentralized architectures and protocols for greater fault-tolerance. However, centralized network structure can arise even when protocols are decentralized. Despite their decentralized protocols, the Internet and World-Wide Web have been shown both theoretically and historically to be highly susceptible to attack, in part due to emergent structural centralization. When single points of failure exist, they are potentially vulnerable to non-technological (i.e., coercive) attacks, suggesting the importance of a structural approach to attack-tolerance. We show how the assumption of partial trust transitivity, while more realistic than the assumption underlying webs of trust, can be used to quantify the effective redundancy of a network as a function of trust transitivity. We also prove that the effective redundancy of the wrap-around butterfly topology increases exponentially with trust transitivity and describe a novel concurrent multipath routing algorithm for constructing paths to utilize that redundancy. When portions of network structure can be dictated our results can be used to create scalable, attack-tolerant infrastructures. More generally, our results provide a theoretical formalism for evaluating the effects of network structure on adversarial fault-tolerance.
