Thanks to recent advancements in numerical methods, computer power, and monitoring technology, seismic ambient noise provides precious information about the structural behavior of old buildings. The measurement of the vibrations produced by anthropic and environmental sources and their use for dynamic identification and structural health monitoring of buildings initiated an emerging, cross-disciplinary field engaging seismologists, engineers, mathematicians, and computer scientists. In this work, we employ recent deep learning techniques for time-series forecasting to inspect and detect anomalies in the large dataset recorded during a long-term monitoring campaign conducted on the San Frediano bell tower in Lucca. We frame the problem as an unsupervised anomaly detection task and train a Temporal Fusion Transformer to learn the normal dynamics of the structure. We then detect the anomalies by looking at the differences between the predicted and observed frequencies.

Abstract:
This paper studies the influence of bending deflections on the structural behaviour of masonry columns. Some explicit solutions are presented, and the combined effects of the constitutive and geometric nonlinearities are investigated through an iterative numerical procedure. The results show that considering second-order effects affects both the collapse load and the dynamical properties of masonr…

On May 12th, 2020, during the course entitled Artificial Intelligence and Jurisdiction Practice organized by the Italian School of Magistracy, more than 70 magistrates followed our demonstration of a Prolog logical judge reasoning on an armed robbery case. Although the implemented logical judge is just an exercise of knowledge representation and simple deductive reasoning, a practical demonstration of an automated reasoning tool to such a large audience of potential end-users represents a first and unique attempt in Italy and, to the best of our knowledge, in the international panorama. In this paper we present the case addressed by the logical judge - a real case already addressed by a human judge in 2015 - and the feedback on the demonstration collected from the attendees.

Finite element model updating of a structure made of linear elastic materials is based on the solution of a minimization problem. The goal is to find some unknown parameters of the finite element model (elastic moduli, mass densities, constraints and boundary conditions) that minimize an objective function which evaluates the discrepancy between experimental and numerical dynamic properties. The objective function depends nonlinearly on the parameters and may have multiple local minimum points. This paper presents a numerical method able to find a global minimum point and assess its reliability. The numerical method has been tested on two simulated examples - a masonry tower and a domed temple - and validated via a generic genetic algorithm and a global sensitivity analysis tool. A real case study monitored under operational conditions has also been addressed, and the structure's experimental modal properties have been used in the model updating procedure to estimate the mechanical properties of its constituent materials.

This paper describes the model updating procedure implemented in NOSA-ITACA, a finite-element code for the structural analysis of masonry constructions of historical interest. The procedure, aimed at matching experimental frequencies and mode shapes, allows fine-tuning calculation of the free parameters in the model. The numerical method is briefly described, and some issues related to its robustness are addressed. The procedure is then applied to a simple case study and two historical structures in Tuscany, the Clock Tower in Lucca and the Maddalena bridge in Borgo a Mozzano.

Authors:

Abstract:
This paper presents a new numerical procedure for evaluating the vibration frequencies and mode shapes of masonry buildings in the presence of cracks. The algorithm has been implemented within the NOSA-ITACA code, which models masonry as a nonlinear elastic material with zero tensile strength. Some case studies are reported, and the differences between linear and nonlinear behavior highlighted.
