A standardised 5G ecosystem will enable adapting 5G to satellite needs. The EU-funded TRANTOR project will seek to develop novel and secure satellite network management solutions that allow scaling up heterogeneous satellite traffic demands and capacities in a cost-effective and highly dynamic way. Researchers also target the development of flexible 6G non-terrestrial access architectures. The focus will be on the design of a multi-orbit and multi-band antenna for satellite user equipment (UE), as well as the development of gNodeB (gNB) and UE 5G non-terrestrial network equipment to support multi-connectivity.

This paper studies the cosine as basis function for the approximation of univariate and continuous functions without memory. This work studies a supervised learning to obtain the approximation coefficients, instead of using the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT). Due to the finite dynamics and orthogonality of the cosine basis functions, simple gradient algorithms, such as the Normalized Least Mean Squares (NLMS), can benefit from it and present a controlled and predictable convergence time and error misadjustment. Due to its simplicity, the proposed technique ranks as the best in terms of learning quality versus complexity, and it is presented as an attractive technique to be used in more complex supervised learning systems. Simulations illustrate the performance of the approach. This paper celebrates the 50th anniversary of the publication of the DCT by Nasir Ahmed in 1973.

Physical layer security is a field of study that continues to gain importance over time. It encompasses a range of algorithms applicable to various aspects of communication systems. While research in the physical layer has predominantly focused on secrecy capacity, which involves logical and digital manipulations to achieve secure communication, there is limited exploration of directly manipulating electromagnetic fields to enhance security against eavesdroppers. In this paper, we propose a novel system that utilizes the Mueller calculation to establish a theoretical framework for manipulating electromagnetic fields in the context of physical layer security. We develop fundamental expressions and introduce new metrics to analyze the system's performance analytically. Additionally, we present three techniques that leverage polarization to enhance physical layer security.

The expressiveness of neural networks highly depends on the nature of the activation function, although these are usually assumed predefined and fixed during the training stage. Under a signal processing perspective, in this paper we present Expressive Neural Network (ENN), a novel model in which the non-linear activation functions are modeled using the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) and adapted using backpropagation during training. This parametrization keeps the number of trainable parameters low, is appropriate for gradient-based schemes, and adapts to different learning tasks. This is the first non-linear model for activation functions that relies on a signal processing perspective, providing high flexibility and expressiveness to the network. We contribute with insights in the explainability of the network at convergence by recovering the concept of bump, this is, the response of each activation function in the output space. Finally, through exhaustive experiments we show that the model can adapt to classification and regression tasks. The performance of ENN outperforms state of the art benchmarks, providing above a 40% gap in accuracy in some scenarios.

In real-time and high-resolution Earth observation imagery, Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites capture images that are subsequently transmitted to ground to create an updated map of an area of interest. Such maps provide valuable information for meteorology or environmental monitoring, but can also be employed in near-real time operation for disaster detection, identification, and management. However, the amount of data generated by these applications can easily exceed the communication capabilities of LEO satellites, leading to congestion and packet drop**. To avoid these problems, the Inter-Satellite Links (ISLs) can be used to distribute the data among the satellites for processing. In this paper, we address an energy minimization problem based on a general satellite mobile edge computing (SMEC) framework for real-time and very-high resolution Earth observation. Our results illustrate that the optimal allocation of data and selection of the compression parameters increase the amount of images that the system can support by a factor of 12 when compared to directly downloading the data. Further, energy savings greater than 11% were observed in a real-life scenario of imaging a volcanic island, while a sensitivity analysis of the image acquisition process demonstrates that potential energy savings can be as high as 92%.

Next-generation satellite systems require more flexibility in resource management such that available radio resources can be dynamically allocated to meet time-varying and non-uniform traffic demands. Considering potential benefits of beam hop** (BH) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), we exploit the time-domain flexibility in multi-beam satellite systems by optimizing BH design, and enhance the power-domain flexibility via NOMA. In this paper, we investigate the synergy and mutual influence of beam hop** and NOMA. We jointly optimize power allocation, beam scheduling, and terminal-timeslot assignment to minimize the gap between requested traffic demand and offered capacity. In the solution development, we formally prove the NP-hardness of the optimization problem. Next, we develop a bounding scheme to tightly gauge the global optimum and propose a suboptimal algorithm to enable efficient resource assignment. Numerical results demonstrate the benefits of combining NOMA and BH, and validate the superiority of the proposed BH-NOMA schemes over benchmarks.

In this paper we present a novel modulation technique for dual polarization communication systems, which reduces the error rate compared with the existent schemes. This modulation places the symbols in a 3D constellation, rather than the classic approach of 2D. Adjusting the phase of these symbols depending on the information bits, we are able to increase the bit rate. Hence, the proposed scheme conveys information by selecting both polarization state and the phase of radiated electromagnetic wave. We also analyse the performance of 3D Polarized Modulation (PMod) for different constellation sizes and we obtain a curve of rate adaptation. Finally, we compare the proposed 3D PMod with other existing schemes such as single polarization Phase Shift Keying (PSK) and double polarization Vertical Bell Laboratories Layer Space-Time (V-BLAST), both carrying the same number of information bits. The results show that 3D PMod always outperforms all other schemes, except for low order modulation. Therefore, we can conclude that 3D PMod is an excellent candidate for medium and high modulation order transmissions.

Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) has potentials to improve the performance of multi-beam satellite systems. The performance optimization in satellite-NOMA systems can be different from that in terrestrial-NOMA systems, e.g., considering distinctive channel models, performance metrics, power constraints, and limited flexibility in resource management. In this paper, we adopt a metric, Offered Capacity to requested Traffic Ratio (OCTR), to measure the requested-offered data (or rate) mismatch in multi-beam satellite systems. In the considered system, NOMA is applied to mitigate intra-beam interference while precoding is implemented to reduce inter-beam interference. We jointly optimize power, decoding orders, and terminal-timeslot assignment to improve the max-min fairness of OCTR. The problem is inherently difficult due to the presence of combinatorial and non-convex aspects. We first fix the terminal-timeslot assignment, and develop an optimal fast-convergence algorithmic framework based on Perron-Frobenius theory (PF) for the remaining joint power-allocation and decoding-order optimization problem. Under this framework, we propose a heuristic algorithm for the original problem, which iteratively updates the terminal-timeslot assignment and improves the overall OCTR performance. Numerical results verify that max-min OCTR is a suitable metric to address the mismatch issue, and is able to improve the fairness among terminals. In average, the proposed algorithm improves the max-min OCTR by 40.2% over Orthogonal Multiple Access (OMA).

Traditionally, interference management has been addressed by proposing signal processing techniques that minimize their effects locally. However, the fast evolution of future communications makes difficult to adapt to new era. In particular, we describe two subsystems capable to detect the presence of interference, even in high Signal to Interference Ratio (SIR), and interference classification in several radio standards. Mutual Information is the metric that is used to perform link adaptation, which allows to achieve rates near capacity. The computation of adaptive transmission modes is achieved by employing the map** between the Signal to Noise Ratio and the Mutual Information. Due to the high complexity of the computation of the Mutual Information, this process is performed off-line via Monte Carlo simulations, whose results are stored in look-up tables. However, in Index Modulations, such as Spatial Modulation or Polarized Modulation, this is not feasible since the constellation and the Mutual Information are channel dependent and it would require to compute this metric at each time instant if the channel is time varying. In this paper, we propose different approximations in order to obtain a simple closed-form expression that allows to compute the Mutual Information at each time instant and thus, making feasible the link adaptation.

Achieving an increase in the spectral efficiency (SE) has always been a major driver in the design of communication systems. The use of MIMO techniques in mobile communications has achieved significant benefits in improving the system throughput. The basic underlying concept of MIMO is to exploit the signal and channel characteristics to eliminate interference between multiple transmissions. Departing from the work carried out under the industrial projects \cite{NGW,Henarejos}, we extend the results provided in their respective reports. The goal is to increase the SE without an increment of radiated energy without any Channel State Information at Transmitter (CSIT) and feedback at the transmitter and maintaining a very low computational complexity at the receiver. Although a priori additional power is required to increase the SE, we demonstrate that the proposed Polarized Modulation (PMod) scheme exploits the polarization diversity reducing the required EbN0 and adding an extra bit. We also introduce two receivers to demodulate this scheme of different computational complexities. We describe a Near Optimal Detector (NOD) which achieves almost the same performance as the optimal detector based on the Maximum Likelihood Detection (MLD), but with lower computational complexity. Finally, the results demonstrate that the PMod requires less EbN0 compared with the single polarization case, guarantees the robustness in the presence of the cross-polarization and validates that PMod can multiplex two streams of different Quality of Service (QoS).

Enabling ultra fast systems has been widely investigated during recent decades. Although polarization has been deployed from the beginning in satellite communications, nowadays it is being exploited to increase the throughput of satellite links. More precisely, the application of diversity techniques to the polarization domain may provide reliable, robust, and fast satellite communications. Better and more flexible spectrum use is also possible if transmission and reception can take place simultaneously in close or even overlap** frequency bands. In this paper we investigate novel signal processing techniques to increase the throughput of satellite communications in fixed and mobile scenarios. First, we investigate four-dimensional (4D) constellations for the forward link. Second, we focus on the mobile scenario and introduce an adaptive algorithm which selects the optimal tuple of modulation order, coding rate, and MIMO scheme that maximizes the throughput constraint to a maximum packet error rate. Finally, we describe the operation of radio transceivers which cancel actively the self-interference posed by the transmit signal when operating in full-duplex mode.

This paper presents the novel application of Polarized Modulation (PMod) for increasing the throughput in mobile satellite transmissions. One of the major drawbacks in mobile satellite communications is the fact that the power budget is often restrictive, making unaffordable to improve the spectral efficiency without an increment of transmitted power. By using dual polarized antennas in the transmitter and receiver, the PMod technique achieves an improvement in throughput of up to $100$\% with respect to existing deployments, with an increase of less than $1$ dB at low \ebn regime. Additionally, the proposed scheme implies minimum hardware modifications with respect to the existing dual polarized systems and does not require additional channel state information at the transmitter; thus it can be used in current deployments. Demodulation (i.e. detection and decoding) alternatives, with different processing complexity and performance, are studied. The results are validated in a typical mobile interactive scenario, the newest version of TS 102 744 standard (Broadband Global Area Network (BGAN)), which aims to provide interactive mobile satellite communications.

The Internet of Things (IoT) will facilitate a wide variety of applications in different domains, such as smart cities, smart grids, industrial automation (Industry 4.0), smart driving, assistance of the elderly, and home automation. Billions of heterogeneous smart devices with different application requirements will be connected to the networks and will generate huge aggregated volumes of data that will be processed in distributed cloud infrastructures. On the other hand, there is also a general trend to deploy functions as software (SW) instances in cloud infrastructures [e.g., network function virtualization (NFV) or mobile edge computing (MEC)]. Thus, the next generation of mobile networks, the fifth-generation (5G), will need not only to develop new radio interfaces or waveforms to cope with the expected traffic growth but also to integrate heterogeneous networks from end to end (E2E) with distributed cloud resources to deliver E2E IoT and mobile services. This article presents the E2E 5G platform that is being developed by the Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC), the first known platform capable of reproducing such an ambitious scenario.

Determining the capacity of a modulation scheme is a fundamental topic of interest. Index Modulations (IM), such as Spatial Modulation (SMod), Polarized Modulation (PMod) or Frequency Index Modulation (FMod), are widely studied in the literature. However, finding a closed-form analytical expression for their capacity still remains an open topic. In this paper, we formulate closed-form expressions for the instantaneous capacity of IM, together with its $2$nd and $4$th order approximations. We show that, in average, the $2$nd approximation error tends to zero for low Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) and is $o\left(\textrm{SNR}\right)$. Also, a detailed analysis of the ergodic capacity over Rayleigh, Rice and Nakagami-$m$ channel distributions is provided. As application of the capacity analysis, we leverage the proposed expressions to compute the ergodic capacities of SMod for different antenna configuration and correlations, PMod for different channel components and conditions, and FMod for different frequency separations.

This paper deals with the problem of precoding in multibeam satellite systems. In contrast to general multiuser multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) cellular schemes, multibeam satellite architectures suffer from different challenges. First, satellite communications standards embed more than one user in each frame in order to increase the channel coding gain. This leads to the different so-called multigroup multicast model, whose optimization requires computationally complex operations. Second, when the data traffic is generated by several Earth stations (gateways), the precoding matrix must be distributively computed and attain additional payload restrictions. Third, since the feedback channel is adverse (large delay and quantization errors), the precoding must be able to deal with such uncertainties. In order to solve the aforementioned problems, we propose a two-stage precoding design in order to both limit the multibeam interference and to enhance the intra-beam minimum user signal power (i.e. the one that dictates the rate allocation per beam). A robust version of the proposed precoder based on a first perturbation model is presented. This mechanism behaves well when the channel state information is corrupted. Furthermore, we propose a per beam user grou** mechanism together with its robust version in order to increase the precoding gain. Finally, a method for dealing with the multiple gateway architecture is presented, which offers high throughputs with a low inter-gateway communication. The conceived designs are evaluated in a close-to-real beam pattern and the latest broadband communication standard for satellite communications.

This paper considers a multigateway multibeam satellite system with multiple feeds per beam. In these systems, each gateway serves a set of beams (cluster) so that the overall data traffic is generated at different geographical areas. Full frequency reuse among beams is considered so that interference mitigation techniques are mandatory. Precisely, this paper aims at designing the precoding scheme which, in contrast to single gateway schemes, entails two main challenges. First, the precoding matrix shall be separated into feed groups assigned to each gateway. Second, complete channel state information (CSI) is required at each gateway, leading to a large communication overhead. In order to solve these problems, a design based on a regularized singular value block decomposition of the channel matrix is presented so that both inter-cluster (i.e. beams of different clusters) and intra-cluster (i.e. beams of the same cluster) interference is minimized. In addition, different gateway cooperative schemes are analysed in order to keep the inter-gateway communication low. Furthermore, the impact of the feeder link interference (i.e. interference between different feeder links) is analysed and it is shown both numerically and analytically that the system performance is reduced severally whenever this interference occurs even though precoding reverts this additional interference. Finally, numerical simulations are shown considering the latest fixed broadband communication standard DVB-S2X so that the quantized feedback effect is evaluated. The proposed precoding technique results to achieve a performance close to the single gateway operation even when the cooperation among gateways is low.

This paper aims at designing an on-board beam generation process for multibeam satellite systems with the goal of reducing the traffic at the feeder link. Full frequency reuse among beams is considered and the beamforming at the satellite is designed for supporting interference mitigation techniques. In addition, in order to reduce the payload cost and complexity, this on-board processing is assumed to be constant and the same for forward and return link transmissions. To meet all these requirements a novel robust minimum mean square error (MMSE) optimization is conceived. The benefits of the considered scheme are evaluated with respect to the current approaches both analytically and numerically. Indeed, we show that with the DVB-RCS and DVB-S2 standards, our proposal allows to increase the total throughput within a range between 6\% and 15\% with respect to other on-board processing techniques in the return and forward link, respectively. Furthermore, the proposed solution presents an implicit feeder link bandwidth reduction with respect to the on-ground beam generation process.

Whenever multibeam satellite systems target very aggressive frequency reuse in their coverage area, inter-beam interference becomes the major obstacle for increasing the overall system throughput. As a matter of fact, users located at the beam edges suffer from a very large interference for even a moderately aggressive planning of reuse-2. Although solutions for inter-beam interference management have been investigated at the satellite terminal, it turns out that the performance improvement does not justify the increased terminal complexity and cost. In this article, we pay attention to interference mitigation techniques that take place at the transmitter (i.e. the gateway). Based on this understanding, we provide our vision on advanced precoding techniques and user clustering methods for multibeam broadband fixed satellite communications. We also discuss practical challenges to deploy precoding schemes and the support introduced in the recently published DVB-S2X standard. Future challenges for novel configurations employing precoding are also provided.
