Concrete workability measure is mostly determined based on subjective assessment of a certified assessor with visual inspections. The potential human error in measuring the workability and the resulting unnecessary adjustments for the workability is a major challenge faced by the construction industry, leading to significant costs, material waste and delay. In this paper, we try to apply computer vision techniques to observe the concrete mixing process and estimate the workability. Specifically, we collected the video data and then built three different deep neural networks for spatial-temporal regression. The pilot study demonstrates a practical application with computer vision techniques to estimate the concrete workability during the mixing process.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is revolutionizing human life with the idea of interconnecting everyday used devices (Things) and making them smart. By establishing a communication network between devices, the IoT system aids in automating tasks and making them efficient and powerful. The sensors and the physical world, connected over a network, involve a massive amount of data. The data collection and sharing possess a critical threat of being stolen and manipulated over the network. These inadequate data security and privacy issues in IoT systems raise concerns about maintaining authentication of IoT data. Blockchain, a tempter-resistant ledger, has emerged as a viable alternative to provide security features. Blockchain technologies with decentralized structures can help resolve IoT structure issues and protect against a single point of failure. While providing robust security features, Blockchain also bears various critical challenges in the IoT environment to adapt. This paper presents a survey on state-of-the-art Blockchain technologies focusing on IoT applications. With Blockchain protocols and data structures, the IoT applications are outlined, along with possible advancements and modifications.

In still image human action recognition, existing studies have mainly leveraged extra bounding box information along with class labels to mitigate the lack of temporal information in still images; however, preparing extra data with manual annotation is time-consuming and also prone to human errors. Moreover, the existing studies have not addressed action recognition with long-tailed distribution. In this paper, we propose a two-phase multi-expert classification method for human action recognition to cope with long-tailed distribution by means of super-class learning and without any extra information. To choose the best configuration for each super-class and characterize inter-class dependency between different action classes, we propose a novel Graph-Based Class Selection (GCS) algorithm. In the proposed approach, a coarse-grained phase selects the most relevant fine-grained experts. Then, the fine-grained experts encode the intricate details within each super-class so that the inter-class variation increases. Extensive experimental evaluations are conducted on various public human action recognition datasets, including Stanford40, Pascal VOC 2012 Action, BU101+, and IHAR datasets. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method yields promising improvements. To be more specific, in IHAR, Sanford40, Pascal VOC 2012 Action, and BU101+ benchmarks, the proposed approach outperforms the state-of-the-art studies by 8.92%, 0.41%, 0.66%, and 2.11 % with much less computational cost and without any auxiliary annotation information. Besides, it is proven that in addressing action recognition with long-tailed distribution, the proposed method outperforms its counterparts by a significant margin.

COVID-19 is a virus with high transmission rate that demands rapid identification of the infected patients to reduce the spread of the disease. The current gold-standard test, Reverse-Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR), has a high rate of false negatives. Diagnosing from CT-scan images as a more accurate alternative has the challenge of distinguishing COVID-19 from other pneumonia diseases. Artificial intelligence can help radiologists and physicians to accelerate the process of diagnosis, increase its accuracy, and measure the severity of the disease. We designed a new interpretable deep neural network to distinguish healthy people, patients with COVID-19, and patients with other pneumonia diseases from axial lung CT-scan images. Our model also detects the infected areas and calculates the percentage of the infected lung volume. We first preprocessed the images to eliminate the batch effects of different devices, and then adopted a weakly supervised method to train the model without having any tags for the infected parts. We trained and evaluated the model on a large dataset of 3359 samples from 6 different medical centers. The model reached sensitivities of 97.75% and 98.15%, and specificities of 87% and 81.03% in separating healthy people from the diseased and COVID-19 from other diseases, respectively. It also demonstrated similar performance for 1435 samples from 6 different medical centers which proves its generalizability. The performance of the model on a large diverse dataset, its generalizability, and interpretability makes it suitable to be used as a reliable diagnostic system.

With great advances in vision and natural language processing, the generation of image captions becomes a need. In a recent paper, Mathews, Xie and He [1], extended a new model to generate styled captions by separating semantics and style. In continuation of this work, here a new captioning model is developed including an image encoder to extract the features, a mixture of recurrent networks to embed the set of extracted features to a set of words, and a sentence generator that combines the obtained words as a stylized sentence. The resulted system that entitled as Mixture of Recurrent Experts (MoRE), uses a new training algorithm that derives singular value decomposition (SVD) from weighting matrices of Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) to increase the diversity of captions. Each decomposition step depends on a distinctive factor based on the number of RNNs in MoRE. Since the used sentence generator gives a stylized language corpus without paired images, our captioning model can do the same. Besides, the styled and diverse captions are extracted without training on a densely labeled or styled dataset. To validate this captioning model, we use Microsoft COCO which is a standard factual image caption dataset. We show that the proposed captioning model can generate a diverse and stylized image captions without the necessity of extra-labeling. The results also show better descriptions in terms of content accuracy.
