Data sharing between online trackers and advertisers is a key component in online behavioral advertising. This sharing can be facilitated through a variety of processes, including those not observable to the user's browser. The unobservability of these processes limits the ability of researchers and auditors seeking to verify compliance with regulations which require complete disclosure of data sharing partners. Unfortunately, the applicability of existing techniques to make inferences about unobservable data sharing relationships is limited due to their dependence on protocol- or case-specific artifacts of the online behavioral advertising ecosystem (e.g., they work only when client-side header bidding is used for ad delivery or when advertisers perform ad retargeting). As behavioral advertising technologies continue to evolve rapidly, the availability of these artifacts and the effectiveness of transparency solutions dependent on them remain ephemeral. In this paper, we propose a generalizable technique, called ATOM, to infer data sharing relationships between online trackers and advertisers. ATOM is different from prior work in that it is universally applicable -- i.e., independent of ad delivery protocols or availability of artifacts. ATOM leverages the insight that by the very nature of behavioral advertising, ad creatives themselves can be used to infer data sharing between trackers and advertisers -- after all, the topics and brands showcased in an ad are dependent on the data available to the advertiser. Therefore, by selectively blocking trackers and monitoring changes in the characteristics of ads delivered by advertisers, ATOM is able to identify data sharing relationships between trackers and advertisers. The relationships discovered by our implementation of ATOM include those not found using prior approaches and are validated by external sources.

Reddit has found its communities playing a prominent role in originating and propagating problematic socio-political discourse. Reddit administrators have generally struggled to prevent or contain such discourse for several reasons including: (1) the inability for a handful of human administrators to track and react to millions of posts and comments per day and (2) fear of backlash as a consequence of administrative decisions to ban or quarantine hateful communities. Consequently, administrative actions (community bans and quarantines) are often taken only when problematic discourse within a community spills over into the real world with serious consequences. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of deploying tools to proactively identify problematic communities on Reddit. Proactive identification strategies show promise for three reasons: (1) they have potential to reduce the manual efforts required to track communities for problematic content, (2) they give administrators a scientific rationale to back their decisions and interventions, and (3) they facilitate early and more nuanced interventions (than banning or quarantining) to mitigate problematic discourse.

In this paper, a 1+1 server protection scheme is considered where two servers, a primary and a secondary processing server are used to serve ECG monitoring applications concurrently. The infrastructure is designed to be resilient against server failure under two scenarios related to the geographic location of primary and secondary servers and resilient against both server and network failures. A Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model is used to optimise the number and locations of both primary and secondary processing servers so that the energy consumption of the networking equipment and processing are minimised. The results show that considering a scenario for server protection without geographical constraints compared to the non-resilient scenario has resulted in both network and processing energy penalty as the traffic is doubled. The results also reveal that increasing the level of resilience to consider geographical constraints compared to case without geographical constraints resulted in higher network energy penalty when the demand is low as more nodes are utilised to place the processing servers under the geographic constraints. Also, increasing the level of resilience to consider network protection with link and node disjoint selection has resulted in a low network energy penalty at high demands due to the activation of a large part of the network in any case due to the demands. However, the results show that the network energy penalty is reduced with the increasing number of processing servers at each candidate node. Meanwhile, the same energy for processing is consumed regardless of the increasing level of resilience as the same number of processing servers are utilised. A heuristic is developed for each resilience scenario for real-time implementation where the results show that the performance of the heuristic is approaching the results of the MILP model.

Recent advances in mobile technologies and cloud computing services have inspired the development of cloud-based real-time health monitoring systems. However, the transfer of health-related data to the cloud contributes to the burden on the networking infrastructures, leading to high latency and increased power consumption. Fog computing is introduced to relieve this burden by bringing services to the users proximity. This study proposes a new fog computing architecture for health monitoring applications based on a Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) access network. An Energy-Efficient Fog Computing (EEFC) model is developed using Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) to optimize the number and location of fog devices at the network edge to process and analyze the health data for energy-efficient fog computing. The performance of the EEFC model at low data rates and high data rates health applications is studied. The outcome of the study reveals that a total energy saving of 36% and 52% are attained via processing and analysis the health data at the fog in comparison to conventional processing and analysis at the central cloud for low data rate application and high data rate application, respectively. We also developed a real-time heuristic; Energy Optimized Fog Computing (EOFC) heuristic, with energy consumption performance approaching the EEFC model. Furthermore, we examined the energy efficiency improvements under different scenarios of devices idle power consumption and traffic volume.

Online social networks support a vibrant ecosystem of third-party apps that get access to personal information of a large number of users. Despite several recent high-profile incidents, methods to systematically detect data misuse by third-party apps on online social networks are lacking. We propose CanaryTrap to detect misuse of data shared with third-party apps. CanaryTrap associates a honeytoken to a user account and then monitors its unrecognized use via different channels after sharing it with the third-party app. We design and implement CanaryTrap to investigate misuse of data shared with third-party apps on Facebook. Specifically, we share the email address associated with a Facebook account as a honeytoken by installing a third-party app. We then monitor the received emails and use Facebook's ad transparency tool to detect any unrecognized use of the shared honeytoken. Our deployment of CanaryTrap to monitor 1,024 Facebook apps has uncovered multiple cases of misuse of data shared with third-party apps on Facebook including ransomware, spam, and targeted advertising.

Fixed edge processing has become a key feature of 5G networks, while playing a key role in reducing latency, improving energy efficiency and introducing flexible compute resource utilization on-demand with added cost savings. Autonomous vehicles are expected to possess significantly more on-board processing capabilities and with improved connectivity. Vehicles continue to be used for a fraction of the day, and as such there is a potential to increase processing capacity by utilizing these resources while vehicles are in short-term and long-term car parks, in roads and at road intersections. Such car parks and road segments can be transformed, through 6G networks, into vehicular fog clusters, or Fogbanks, that can provide processing, storage and sensing capabilities, making use of underutilized vehicular resources. We introduce the Fogbanks concept, outline current research efforts underway in vehicular clouds, and suggest promising directions for 6G in a world where autonomous driving will become commonplace. Moreover, we study the processing allocation problem in cloud-based Fogbank architecture. We solve this problem using Mixed Integer Programming (MILP) to minimize the total power consumption of the proposed architecture, taking into account two allocation strategies, single allocation of tasks and distributed allocation. Finally, we describe additional future directions needed to establish reliability, security, virtualisation, energy efficiency, business models and standardization.

Data centres resources, architectures and conditions define the performance of the applications running on them. One of the main measures of the network efficiency is the latency, which can have a huge effect on resources utilisation, power consumption and the overall performance. In this paper, the performance of a fog network is evaluated by measuring the latency while running a facial recognition software. The network consists of two processing cells, a core network and a PON cell. The results show how network latency is affected by running the facial recognition software in the end-to-end network setup introduced in this paper.

The introduction of cloud data centres has opened new possibilities for the storage and processing of data, augmenting the limited capabilities of peripheral devices. Large data centres tend to be located away from the end users which increases latency and power consumption in the interconnecting networks. These limitations led to the introduction of edge processing where small distributed data centres or fog units are located at the edge of the network close to the end user. Vehicles can have substantial processing capabilities, often un-used, in their on-board-units (OBUs). These can be used to augment the network edge processing capabilities. In this paper we extend our previous work and develop a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulation that optimizes the allocation of networking and processing resources to minimize power consumption. Our edge processing architecture includes vehicular processing nodes, edge processing and cloud infrastructure. Furthermore, in this paper our optimization formulation includes delay. Compared to power minimization, our new formulation reduces delay significantly, while resulting in a very limited increase in power consumption.

In this paper, the entire IoT-fog-cloud architecture is modelled, the service placement problem is optimized through Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) and the total power consumption is jointly minimized for processing and networking. Four aspects of IoT service placements are examined: 1) non-splittable services, 2) splittable services, 3) inter-service processing overhead for sub-service synchronization and 4) deployment of special-purpose cloud data centers (SP-DCs). The results showed that for a capacitated problem, service splitting introduces power consumption savings of up to 86% compared to 46% with non-splittable services in relation to processing in general-purpose data centers (GP-DCs). Moreover, it is observed that the inter sub-service processing overhead has a great influence on the total number of service splits. However much insignificant the ratio of the processing overhead, the results showed that this is not a trivial matter and hence much attention needs to paid to this area in order to make the best use of the resources that are available in the edge of the network. Moreover, the optimization results showed that, for very high demands, power savings of up to 50% could be achieved with SP-DCs compared to 30% with GP-DCs.

We propose network coding as an energy efficient data transmission technique in core networks with non-bypass and bypass routing approaches. The improvement in energy efficiency is achieved through reduction in the traffic flows passing through intermediate nodes. A mixed integer linear program (MILP) is developed to optimize the use of network resources, and the results show that our proposed network coding approach introduces up to 33% power savings for the non-bypass case compared with the conventional architectures. For the bypass case, 28% power savings are obtained considering futuristic network components power consumption. A heuristic based on the minimum hop count routing shows power savings comparable to the MILP results. Furthermore, we study how the change in network topology affects the savings produced by network coding. The results show that the savings are proportional to the average hop count of the network topology. We also derive power consumption analytic bounds and closed form expressions for networks that implement network coding and thus also verify the results obtained by the MILP model.

Reddit administrators have generally struggled to prevent or contain such discourse for several reasons including: (1) the inability for a handful of human administrators to track and react to millions of posts and comments per day and (2) fear of backlash as a consequence of administrative decisions to ban or quarantine hateful communities. Consequently, as shown in our background research, administrative actions (community bans and quarantines) are often taken in reaction to media pressure following offensive discourse within a community spilling into the real world with serious consequences. In this paper, we investigate the feasibility of proactive moderation on Reddit -- i.e., proactively identifying communities at risk of committing offenses that previously resulted in bans for other communities. Proactive moderation strategies show promise for two reasons: (1) they have potential to narrow down the communities that administrators need to monitor for hateful content and (2) they give administrators a scientific rationale to back their administrative decisions and interventions. Our work shows that communities are constantly evolving in their user base and topics of discourse and that evolution into hateful or dangerous (i.e., considered bannable by Reddit administrators) communities can often be predicted months ahead of time. This makes proactive moderation feasible. Further, we leverage explainable machine learning to help identify the strongest predictors of evolution into dangerous communities. This provides administrators with insights into the characteristics of communities at risk becoming dangerous or hateful. Finally, we investigate, at scale, the impact of participation in hateful and dangerous subreddits and the effectiveness of community bans and quarantines on the behavior of members of these communities.

In this paper we propose an architecture that integrates VC with metro fog nodes and the central cloud to ensure service continuity. We tackle the problem of energy efficient resource allocation in this architecture by develo** a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model to minimize power consumption by optimizing the assignment of different tasks to the available resources in this architecture. We study service provisioning considering different assignment strategies under varying application demands and analyze the impact of these strategies on the utilization of the VC resources and therefore, the overall power consumption. The results show that traffic demands have a higher impact on the power consumption, compared to the impact of the processing demands. Integrating metro fog nodes and vehicle edge nodes in the cloud-based architecture can save power, with an average power saving up to 54%. The power savings can increase by 12% by distributing the task assignment among multiple vehicles in the VC level, compared to assigning the whole task to a single processing node.

With the rapid proliferation of connected devices in the Internet of Things (IoT), the centralized cloud solution faces several challenges, out of which, there is an overwhelming consensus to put energy efficiency at the top of the research agenda. In this paper, we evaluate the impact of demand splitting over heterogeneous processing resources in an IoT platform, supported by Fog and Cloud infrastructure. We develop a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model to study the gains of splitting resource intensive demands among IoT nodes, Fog devices and Cloud servers. A surveillance application is considered, which consists of multiple smart cameras capable of capturing and analyzing real-time video streams. The PON access network aggregates IoT layer demands for processing in the Fog, or the Cloud which is accessed through the IP/WDM network. For typical video analysis workloads, the results show that splitting medium demand sizes among IoT and Fog resources yields a total power consumption saving of up to 32%, even if they can host only 10% of the total workload and this can reach 93% for lower number of demands, compared to the centralized cloud solution. However, the gains in power savings from splitting decreases as the number of splits increases. Keywords: IoT surveillance, PON, energy efficiency, fog, distributed processing.

We consider a heart monitoring application where patients send their 30 minute recording of Electrocardiogram (ECG) signal for processing, analysis, and decision making at fog processing units within the time constraint recommended by the American Heart Association (AHA) to save heart patients when an abnormality in the ECG signal is detected. The locations of the processing servers are optimized so that the energy consumption of both the processing and networking equipment are minimised. The results show that processing the ECG signal at fog processing units yields a total energy consumption saving of up to 68% compared to processing the at the central cloud.

Abstract:
This paper focuses on investigating the direct and life cycle assessment (LCA) emissions in core networks, considering British telecom (BT) core network as a case study. We found that on 1st December 2016, the total BT core network emissions were around 22 tCO2e and 25 tCO2e of direct and LCA emissions, respectively.

Abstract:
In this work, we establish analytic bounds for the energy efficiency of 1 + 1 survivable IP over WDM networks using network coding. The analytic bounds are shown to be in close agreement with our previously reported results. In this work, we establish analytic bounds for the energy efficiency of 1 + 1 survivable IP over WDM networks using network coding. The analytic bounds are shown to be in close agreement with our previously reported results. They provide verification of the MILP and heuristics proposed previously, in addition to an efficient, compact means to evaluate network results and allow the performance of large networks to be determined easily.
