Consider a communication system in which a single antenna user equipment exchanges information with a multi-antenna base station via a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) in the presence of spatially correlated channels and electromagnetic interference (EMI). To exploit the attractive advantages of RIS technology, accurate configuration of its reflecting elements is crucial. In this paper, we use statistical knowledge of channels and EMI to optimize the RIS elements for i) accurate channel estimation and ii) reliable data transmission. In both cases, our goal is to determine the RIS coefficients that minimize the mean square error, resulting in the formulation of two non-convex problems that share the same structure. To solve these two problems, we present an alternating optimization approach that reliably converges to a locally optimal solution. The incorporation of the diagonally scaled steepest descent algorithm, derived from Newton's method, ensures fast convergence with manageable complexity. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method under various propagation conditions. Notably, it shows significant advantages over existing alternatives that depend on a sub-optimal configuration of the RIS and are derived on the basis of different criteria.

In real-time and high-resolution Earth observation imagery, Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites capture images that are subsequently transmitted to ground to create an updated map of an area of interest. Such maps provide valuable information for meteorology or environmental monitoring, but can also be employed in near-real time operation for disaster detection, identification, and management. However, the amount of data generated by these applications can easily exceed the communication capabilities of LEO satellites, leading to congestion and packet drop**. To avoid these problems, the Inter-Satellite Links (ISLs) can be used to distribute the data among the satellites for processing. In this paper, we address an energy minimization problem based on a general satellite mobile edge computing (SMEC) framework for real-time and very-high resolution Earth observation. Our results illustrate that the optimal allocation of data and selection of the compression parameters increase the amount of images that the system can support by a factor of 12 when compared to directly downloading the data. Further, energy savings greater than 11% were observed in a real-life scenario of imaging a volcanic island, while a sensitivity analysis of the image acquisition process demonstrates that potential energy savings can be as high as 92%.

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) at radio frequency (RF) has attracted more and more attention as a novel approach of multiplexing a set of orthogonal OAM modes on the same frequency channel to achieve high spectral efficiency (SE). However, the precondition for maintaining the orthogonality among different OAM modes is perfect alignment of the transmit and receive uniform circular arrays (UCAs), which is difficult to be satisfied in practical wireless communication scenario. Therefore, to achieve available multi-mode OAM broadband wireless communication, we first investigate the effect of oblique angles on the transmission performance of the multi-mode OAM broadband system in the non-parallel misalignment case. Then, we compare the UCA-based RF analog and baseband digital transceiver structures and corresponding beam steering schemes. Mathematical analysis and numerical simulations validate that the SE of the misaligned multi-mode OAM broadband system is quite low, while analog and digital beam steering both can significantly improve the SE of the system. However, digital beam steering can obtain higher SE than analog beam steering especially when the bandwidth and the number of array elements are large, which validates that baseband digital transceiver with digital beam steering is more suitable for multi-mode OAM broadband wireless communication systems in practice.

However, classical phase gradient-based OAM mode detection methods require perfect alignment of transmit and receive antennas, which greatly challenges the practical application of OAM communications. In this paper, we first show the effect of non-parallel misalignment on the OAM phase structure, and then propose the OAM mode detection method based on uniform circular array (UCA) samples learning for the more general alignment or non-parallel misalignment case. Specifically, we applied three classifiers: K-nearest neighbor (KNN), support vector machine (SVM), and back-propagation neural network (BPNN) to both single-mode and multi-mode OAM detection. The simulation results validate that the proposed learning-based OAM mode detection methods are robust to misalignment errors and especially BPNN classifier has the best generalization performance.

5G technology allows heterogeneous services to share the wireless spectrum within the same radio access network. In this context, spectrum slicing of the shared radio resources is a critical task to guarantee the performance of each service. We analyze a downlink communication serving two types of traffic: enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC). Due to the nature of low-latency traffic, the base station knows the channel state information (CSI) of the eMBB users while having statistical CSI for the URLLC users. We study the power minimization problem employing orthogonal multiple access (OMA) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) schemes. Based on this analysis, we propose a lookup table-based approach and a block coordinated descent (BCD) algorithm. We show that the BCD is optimal for the URLLC power allocation. The numerical results show that NOMA leads to lower power consumption than OMA, except when the average channel gain of the URLLC user is very high. For the latter case, the optimal approach depends on the channel condition of the eMBB user. Even when OMA attains the best performance, the gap with NOMA is negligible, showing the capability of NOMA to reduce power consumption in practically every condition.

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) at radio frequency (RF) provides a novel approach of multiplexing a set of orthogonal modes on the same frequency channel to achieve high spectral efficiencies (SEs). However, the existing research on OAM wireless communications is mainly focused on pointto-point transmission in the line-of-sight (LoS) scenario. In this paper, we propose an overall scheme of the downlink multi-user OAM (MU-OAM) wireless backhaul based on uniform circular arrays (UCAs) for broadcasting networks, which can achieve the joint spatial division and coaxial multiplexing (JSDCM). A salient feature of the proposed downlink MU-OAM wireless backhaul systems is that the channel matrices are completely characterized by the position of each small base station (SBS), independent of the numbers of subcarriers and antennas, which avoids estimating large channel matrices required by the traditional downlink multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) wireless backhaul systems. Thereafter, we propose an OAM-based multiuser distance and angle of arrival (AoA) estimation method, which is able to simultaneously estimate the positions of multiple SBSs with a flexible number of training symbols. With the estimated distances and AoAs, a MU-OAM preprocessing scheme is applied to eliminate the co-mode and inter-mode interferences in the downlink MU-OAM channel. At last, the proposed methods are extended to the downlink MU-OAM-MIMO wireless backhaul system equipped with uniform concentric circular arrays (UCCAs), for which much higher spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) than traditional MU-MIMO systems can be achieved. Both mathematical analysis and simulation results validate that the proposed scheme can effectively eliminate both interferences of the practical downlink MU-OAM channel and approaches the performance of the ideal MU-OAM channel.

The intelligent information society, which is highly digitized, intelligence inspired and globally data driven, will be deployed in the next decade. The next 6G wireless communication networks are the key to achieve this grand blueprint, which is expected to connect everything, provide full dimensional wireless coverage and integrate all functions to support full-vertical applications. Recent research reveals that intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) with wireless environment control capability is a promising technology for 6G networks. Specifically, IRS can intelligently control the wavefront, e.g., the phase, amplitude, frequency, and even polarization by massive tunable elements, thus achieving fine-grained 3-D passive beamforming. In this paper, we first give a blueprint of the next 6G networks including the vision, typical scenarios and key performance indicators (KPIs). Then, we provide an overview of IRS including the new signal model, hardware architecture and competitive advantages in 6G networks. Besides, we discuss the potential application of IRS in the connectivity of 6G networks in detail, including intelligent and controllable wireless environment, ubiquitous connectivity, deep connectivity and holographic connectivity. At last, we summarize the challenges of IRS application and deployment in 6G networks. As a timely review of IRS, our summary will be of interest to both researchers and practitioners engaging in IRS for 6G networks.

Spectrum slicing of the shared radio resources is a critical task in 5G networks with heterogeneous services, through which each service gets performance guarantees. In this paper, we consider a setup in which a Base Station (BS) should serve two types of traffic in the downlink, enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC), respectively. Two resource allocation strategies are compared: non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and orthogonal multiple access (OMA). A framework for power minimization is presented, in which the BS knows the channel state information (CSI) of the eMBB users only. Nevertheless, due to the resource sharing, it is shown that this knowledge can be used also to the benefit of the URLLC users. The numerical results show that NOMA leads to a lower power consumption compared to OMA for every simulation parameter under test.

The combination of cloud computing capabilities at the network edge and artificial intelligence promise to turn future mobile networks into service- and radio-aware entities, able to address the requirements of upcoming latency-sensitive applications. In this context, a challenging research goal is to exploit edge intelligence to dynamically and optimally manage the Radio Access Network Slicing (that is a less mature and more complex technology than fifth-generation Network Slicing) and Radio Resource Management, which is a very complex task due to the mostly unpredictably nature of the wireless channel. This paper presents a novel architecture that leverages Deep Reinforcement Learning at the edge of the network in order to address Radio Access Network Slicing and Radio Resource Management optimization supporting latency-sensitive applications. The effectiveness of our proposal against baseline methodologies is investigated through computer simulation, by considering an autonomous-driving use-case.

With the advent of 5G and the research into beyond 5G (B5G) networks, a novel and very relevant research issue is how to manage the coexistence of different types of traffic, each with very stringent but completely different requirements. In this paper we propose a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm to slice the available physical layer resources between ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) and enhanced Mobile BroadBand (eMBB) traffic. Specifically, in our setting the time-frequency resource grid is fully occupied by eMBB traffic and we train the DRL agent to employ proximal policy optimization (PPO), a state-of-the-art DRL algorithm, to dynamically allocate the incoming URLLC traffic by puncturing eMBB codewords. Assuming that each eMBB codeword can tolerate a certain limited amount of puncturing beyond which is in outage, we show that the policy devised by the DRL agent never violates the latency requirement of URLLC traffic and, at the same time, manages to keep the number of eMBB codewords in outage at minimum levels, when compared to other state-of-the-art schemes.

The implementation of device-to-device (D2D) underlaying or overlaying pre-existing cellular networks has received much attention due to the potential of enhancing the total cell throughput, reducing power consumption and increasing the instantaneous data rate. In this paper we propose a distributed power allocation scheme for D2D OFDMA communications and, in particular, we consider the two operating modes amenable to a distributed implementation: dedicated and reuse modes. The proposed schemes address the problem of maximizing the users' sum rate subject to power constraints, which is known to be nonconvex and, as such, extremely difficult to be solved exactly. We propose here a fresh approach to this well-known problem, capitalizing on the fact that the power allocation problem can be modeled as a potential game. Exploiting the potential games property of converging under better response dynamics, we propose two fully distributed iterative algorithms, one for each operation mode considered, where each user updates sequentially and autonomously its power allocation. Numerical results, computed for several different user scenarios, show that the proposed methods, which converge to one of the local maxima of the objective function, exhibit performance close to the maximum achievable optimum and outperform other schemes presented in the literature.

Before establishing a communication link in a cellular network, the user terminal must activate a synchronization procedure called initial cell search in order to acquire specific information about the serving base station. To accomplish this task, the primary synchronization signal (PSS) and secondary synchronization signal (SSS) are periodically transmitted in the downlink of a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network.
Since SSS detection can be performed only after successful identification of the primary signal, in this work we present a robust scheme for joint PSS detection, sector index identification and integer frequency offset (IFO) recovery in an LTE system. The proposed algorithm relies on the maximum likelihood (ML) estimation criterion and exploits a suitable reduced-rank representation of the channel frequency response to take multipath distortions into account. We show that some PSS detection methods that were originally introduced through heuristic reasoning can be derived from our ML framework by selecting an appropriate model for the channel gains over the PSS subcarriers.
Numerical simulations indicate that the proposed scheme can be effectively applied in the presence of severe multipath propagation, where existing alternatives provide unsatisfactory performance.

In this work, we deal with resource allocation in the downlink of spatial multiplexing MIMO-OFDMA systems. In particular, we concentrate on the problem of jointly optimizing the transmit and receive processing matrices, the channel assignment and the power allocation with the objective of minimizing the total power consumption while satisfying different quality-of-service requirements. A layered architecture is used in which users are first partitioned in different groups on the basis of their channel quality and then channel assignment and transceiver design are sequentially addressed starting from the group of users with most adverse channel conditions. The multi-user interference among users belonging to different groups is removed at the base station using a Tomlinson-Harashima pre-coder operating at user level. Numerical results are used to highlight the effectiveness of the proposed solution and to make comparisons with existing alternatives.

To cope with the ever increasing demand for bandwidth, future wireless networks will be designed with reuse distance equal to one. This scenario requires the implementation of techniques able to manage the strong multiple access interference each cell generates towards its neighbor cells. In particular, low complexity and reduced feedback are important requirements for practical algorithms. In this paper we study an allocation problem for OFDMA networks formulated with the objective of minimizing the load of each cell in the system subject to the constraint that each user meets its target rate. We decompose resource allocation into two sub-problems: channel allocation under deterministic power assignment and continuous power assignment optimization. Channel allocation is formulated as the problem of finding the maximum weighted independent set (MWIS) in graph theory. In addition, we propose a minimal weighted-degree greedy (MWDG) algorithm of which the approximation factor is analyzed. For power allocation, an iterative power reassignment algorithm (DPRA) is proposed. The control information requested to perform the allocation is limited and the computational burden is shared between the base station and the user equipments. Simulations have been carried out under constant bit rate traffic model and the results have been compared with other allocation schemes of similar complexity. MWDG has excellent performance and outperforms all other techniques.

The computational complexity issues of the resulting model is discussed and proving that the problem is NP-hard in the strong sense. Heuristic approaches, based on network flow models, that finds optima under suitable conditions, or "reasonably good" solutions in the general case are presented. Computational experiences show that, in a comparison with a commercial state-of-the-art optimization solver, the proposed algorithms are effective in terms of solution quality and CPU times.

We propose a novel distributed resource allocation scheme for the up-link of a cellular multi-carrier system based on the message passing (MP) algorithm. In the proposed approach each transmitter iteratively sends and receives information messages to/from the base station with the goal of achieving an optimal resource allocation strategy. The exchanged messages are the solution of small distributed allocation problems. To reduce the computational load, the MP problems at the terminals follow a dynamic programming formulation. The advantage of the proposed scheme is that it distributes the computational effort among all the transmitters in the cell and it does not require the presence of a central controller that takes all the decisions. Numerical results show that the proposed approach is an excellent solution to the resource allocation problem for cellular multi-carrier systems.
