Emotions and other affective states play a pivotal role in cognition and, consequently, the learning process. It is well-established that computer-based learning environments (CBLEs) that can detect and adapt to students' affective states can enhance learning outcomes. However, practical constraints often pose challenges to the deployment of sensor-based affect detection in CBLEs, particularly for large-scale or long-term applications. As a result, sensor-free affect detection, which exclusively relies on logs of students' interactions with CBLEs, emerges as a compelling alternative. This paper provides a comprehensive literature review on sensor-free affect detection. It delves into the most frequently identified affective states, the methodologies and techniques employed for sensor development, the defining attributes of CBLEs and data samples, as well as key research trends. Despite the field's evident maturity, demonstrated by the consistent performance of the models and the application of advanced machine learning techniques, there is ample scope for future research. Potential areas for further exploration include enhancing the performance of sensor-free detection models, amassing more samples of underrepresented emotions, and identifying additional emotions. There is also a need to refine model development practices and methods. This could involve comparing the accuracy of various data collection techniques, determining the optimal granularity of duration, establishing a shared database of action logs and emotion labels, and making the source code of these models publicly accessible. Future research should also prioritize the integration of models into CBLEs for real-time detection, the provision of meaningful interventions based on detected emotions, and a deeper understanding of the impact of emotions on learning.

Preliminary data obtained from a partnership between the Federal University of Campina Grande and an ecommerce company indicates that some applications have issues when dealing with variable demand. This happens because a delay in scaling resources leads to performance degradation and, in literature, is a matter usually treated by improving the auto-scaling. To better understand the current state-of-the-art on this subject, we re-evaluate an auto-scaling algorithm proposed in the literature, in the context of ecommerce, using a long-term real workload. Experimental results show that our proactive approach is able to achieve an accuracy of up to 94 percent and led the auto-scaling to a better performance than the reactive approach currently used by the ecommerce company.

The quantification of fat depots on the surroundings of the heart is an accurate procedure for evaluating health risk factors correlated with several diseases. However, this type of evaluation is not widely employed in clinical practice due to the required human workload. This work proposes a novel technique for the automatic segmentation of cardiac fat pads. The technique is based on applying classification algorithms to the segmentation of cardiac CT images. Furthermore, we extensively evaluate the performance of several algorithms on this task and discuss which provided better predictive models. Experimental results have shown that the mean accuracy for the classification of epicardial and mediastinal fats has been 98.4% with a mean true positive rate of 96.2%. On average, the Dice similarity index, regarding the segmented patients and the ground truth, was equal to 96.8%. Therfore, our technique has achieved the most accurate results for the automatic segmentation of cardiac fats, to date.

The deposits of fat on the surroundings of the heart are correlated to several health risk factors such as atherosclerosis, carotid stiffness, coronary artery calcification, atrial fibrillation and many others. These deposits vary unrelated to obesity, which reinforces its direct segmentation for further quantification. However, manual segmentation of these fats has not been widely deployed in clinical practice due to the required human workload and consequential high cost of physicians and technicians. In this work, we propose a unified method for an autonomous segmentation and quantification of two types of cardiac fats. The segmented fats are termed epicardial and mediastinal, and stand apart from each other by the pericardium. Much effort was devoted to achieve minimal user intervention. The proposed methodology mainly comprises registration and classification algorithms to perform the desired segmentation. We compare the performance of several classification algorithms on this task, including neural networks, probabilistic models and decision tree algorithms. Experimental results of the proposed methodology have shown that the mean accuracy regarding both epicardial and mediastinal fats is 98.5% (99.5% if the features are normalized), with a mean true positive rate of 98.0%. In average, the Dice similarity index was equal to 97.6%.

The fifth-generation mobile evolution enables transformations on Next-Generation Radio Access Networks (NG-RAN). The RAN protocol stack is split into eight disaggregated options combined in three network units, i.e., Central, Distributed, and Radio. Besides that, further advances allow the RAN functions to be virtualized on top of general-purpose hardware, using the concept of virtualized RAN (vRAN). The Combination of NG-RAN and vRAN results in vNG-RAN, which enables the management of the disaggregated units and protocols as a set of radio functions. However, the orchestration-based placement of these radio functions is a challenging issue since the best decision can be determined by multiple constraints involving RAN disaggregation, crosshaul networks requirements, availability of computational resources, etc. This article proposes OPlaceRAN, a vNG-RAN deployment orchestrator framed within the NFV reference architecture and aligned with the Open RAN initiative. OPlaceRAN supports the dynamic placement of radio functions focusing on vNG-RAN planning and is designed to be agnostic to the placement optimization model. To validate OPlaceRAN, we developed a prototype based on up-to-date cloud-native tools to deploy RAN using containerized virtualization using the OpenAirInterface emulator and considering two distinct functional splits (options 2 and 6). The evaluation is tested as proofs-of-concept in a real computing infrastructure using two different placement solutions. Our results reveal that OPlaceRAN is an effective cloud-native solution for containerized network functions placement and agnostic to the optimization model. Additionally, OPlaceRAN is up-to-date with the most advanced vNG-RAN design and development approaches, contributing to the evolution of the fifth-generation of mobile networks.

The fifth-generation mobile evolution enables several transformations on Next Generation Radio Access Networks (NG-RAN). The RAN protocol stack is splitting into eight possible disaggregated options combined into three network units, i.e., Central, Distributed, and Radio. Besides that, further advances allow the RAN software to be virtualized on top of general-purpose vendor-neutral hardware, dealing with the concept of virtualized RAN (vRAN). The disaggregated network units initiatives reach full interoperability based on the Open RAN (O-RAN). The combination of NG-RAN and vRAN results in vNG-RAN, enabling the management of disaggregated units and protocols as a set of radio functions. The placement of these functions is challenging since the best decision can be based on multiple constraints, such as the RAN protocol stack split, routing paths of transport networks with restricted bandwidth and latency requirements, different topologies and link capabilities, asymmetric computational resources, etc. This article proposes the first exact model for the placement optimization of radio functions for vNG-RAN planning, named PlaceRAN. The main objective is to minimize the computing resources and maximize the aggregation of radio functions. The PlaceRAN evaluation considered two realistic network topologies. Our results reveal that the PlaceRAN model achieves an optimized high-performance aggregation level, it is flexible for RAN deployment overcoming the network restrictions, and it is up to date with the most advanced vNG-RAN design and development.

Bitcoin, as well as many of its successors, require the whole transaction record to be reliably acquired by all nodes to prevent double-spending. Recently, many blockchains have been proposed to achieve scale-out throughput by letting nodes only acquire a fraction of the whole transaction set. However, these schemes, e.g., sharding and off-chain techniques, suffer from a degradation in decentralization or the capacity of fault tolerance.
In this paper, we show that the complete set of transactions is not a necessity for the prevention of double-spending if the properties of value transfers is fully explored. In other words, we show that a value-transfer ledger like Bitcoin has the potential to scale-out by its nature without sacrificing security or decentralization. Firstly, we give a formal definition for the value-transfer ledger and its distinct features from a generic database. Then, we introduce an off-chain based scheme with a shared main chain for consensus and an individual chain for each node for recording transactions. A locally executable validation scheme is proposed with uncompromising validity and consistency. A beneficial consequence of our design is that nodes will spontaneously try to reduce their transmission cost by only providing the transactions needed to show that their transactions are double-spending-proof. As a result, the network is sharded as each node only acquires part of the transaction record and a scale-out throughput could be achieved, which we call "spontaneous sharding".
