In this paper, we study the feasibility of coupling the PN ranging with filtered high-order modulations, and investigate the simultaneous demodulation of a high-rate telemetry stream while tracking the PN ranging sequence. Accordingly, we design a receiver scheme that is able to perform a parallel cancellation, in closed-loop, of the ranging and the telemetry signal reciprocally. From our analysis, we find that the non-constant envelope property of the modulation causes an additional jitter on the PN ranging timing estimation that, on the other hand, can be limited by properly sizing the receiver loop bandwidth.
Our study proves that the use of filtered high-order modulations combined with PN ranging outperforms the state-of-the-art in terms of spectral efficiency and achievable data rate, while having comparable ranging performance.

In this paper we propose a simple method for generating short-length rate-compatible codes over $\mathbb{Z}_M$ that are robust to non-coherent detection for $M$-PSK constellations. First, a greedy algorithm is used to construct a family of rotationally invariant codes for a given constellation. Then, by properly modifying such codes we obtain codes that are robust to non-coherent detection. We briefly discuss the optimality of the constructed codes for special cases of BPSK and QPSK constellations. Our method provides an upper bound for the length of optimal codes with a given desired non-coherent distance. We also derive a simple asymptotic upper bound on the frame error rate (FER) of such codes and provide the simulation results for a selected set of proposed codes. Finally, we briefly discuss the problem of designing binary codes that are robust to non-coherent detection for QPSK constellation.

Current State-of-the-Art High Throughput Satellite systems provide wide-area connectivity through multi-beam architectures. However, due to the tremendous system throughput requirements that next generation Satellite Communications expect to achieve, traditional 4-colour frequency reuse schemes, i.e., two frequency bands with two orthogonal polarisations, are not sufficient anymore and more aggressive solutions as full frequency reuse are gaining momentum. These approaches require advanced interference management techniques to cope with the significantly increased inter-beam interference, like multicast precoding and Multi User Detection. With respect to the former, several peculiar challenges arise when designed for SatCom systems. In particular, to maximise resource usage while minimising delay and latency, multiple users are multiplexed in the same frame, thus imposing to consider multiple channel matrices when computing the precoding weights. In this paper, we focus on this aspect by re-formulating it as a clustering problem. After introducing a novel mathematical framework, we design a k-means-based clustering algorithm to group users into simultaneously precoded and served clusters. Two similarity metrics are used to this aim: the users' Euclidean distance and their channel distance, i.e., distance in the multidimensional channel vector space. Through extensive numerical simulations, we substantiate the proposed algorithms and identify the parameters driving the system performance.

Next generation wireless systems will need higher spectral efficiency as the expected traffic volumes per unit bandwidth and dimension will inevitably grow. As a consequence, it is necessary to design coding schemes with performances close to the theoretical limits, having high flexibility and low complexity requirements at transmitter and receiver. In this paper, we point out some of the limitations of the Bit Interleaved Code Modulation (BICM) technique which is the state of the art adopted in several standards and then propose some new lower complexity alternatives. These low complexity alternatives are obtained by applying the recently introduced Analog Digital Belief Propagation (ADBP) algorithm to a two stage encoding scheme embedding a hard decoding stage. First we show that for PAM$^2$ type constellations over the AWGN channel, the performance loss caused by using a hard decoded stage for all modulation bits except the two least protected is negligible. Next, we consider the application of two stage decoders to more challenging Rician channels, showing that in this case the number of bits needed to be soft decoded depends on the Rician factor and increases to a maximum of three bits per dimension for the Rayleigh channel. Finally, we apply the ADBP algorithm to further reduce the detection and decoding complexity.

We present bounds and a closed-form high-SNR expression for the capacity of multiple-antenna systems affected by Wiener phase noise. Our results are developed for the scenario where a single oscillator drives all the radio-frequency circuitries at each transceiver (common oscillator setup), the input signal is subject to a peak-power constraint, and the channel matrix is deterministic. This scenario is relevant for line-of-sight multiple-antenna microwave backhaul links with sufficiently small antenna spacing at the transceivers. For the 2 by 2 multiple-antenna case, for a Wiener phase-noise process with standard deviation equal to 6 degrees, and at the medium/high SNR values at which microwave backhaul links operate, the upper bound reported in the paper exhibits a 3 dB gap from a lower bound obtained using 64-QAM. Furthermore, in this SNR regime the closed-form high-SNR expression is shown to be accurate.

In this paper we use a variation of simulated annealing algorithm for optimizing two-dimensional constellations with 32 signals. The main objective is to maximize the symmetric pragmatic capacity under the peak-power constraint. The method allows the joint optimization of constellation and binary labeling. We also investigate the performance of the optimized constellation over nonlinear satellite channel under additive white Gaussian noise. We consider the performance over systems with and without pre-distorters. In both cases the optimized constellations perform considerably better than the conventional Amplitude Phase Shift Keying (APSK) modulations, used in the current digital video broadcasting standard (DVB-S2) on satellite channels. Based on our optimized constellations, we also propose a new labeling for the 4+12+16-APSK constellation of the DVB-S2 standard which is Gray over all rings.

The pragmatic approach to coded continuous-phase modulation (CPM) is proposed as a capacity-achieving low-complexity alternative to the serially-concatenated CPM (SC-CPM) coding scheme. In this paper, we first perform a selection of the best spectrally-efficient CPM modulations to be embedded into SC-CPM schemes. Then, we consider the pragmatic capacity (a.k.a. BICM capacity) of CPM modulations and optimize it through a careful design of the map** between input bits and CPM waveforms. The so obtained schemes are cascaded with an outer serially-concatenated convolutional code to form a pragmatic coded-modulation system. The resulting schemes exhibit performance very close to the CPM capacity without requiring iterations between the outer decoder and the CPM demodulator. As a result, the receiver exhibits reduced complexity and increased flexibility due to the separation of the demodulation and decoding functions.

A key idea in coding for the broadcast channel (BC) is binning, in which the transmitter encode information by selecting a codeword from an appropriate bin (the messages are thus the bin indexes). This selection is normally done by solving an appropriate (possibly difficult) combinatorial problem. Recently it has been shown that binning for the Blackwell channel --a particular BC-- can be done by iterative schemes based on Survey Propagation (SP). This method uses decimation for SP and suffers a complexity of O(n^2). In this paper we propose a new variation of the Belief Propagation (BP) algorithm, named Reinforced BP algorithm, that turns BP into a solver. Our simulations show that this new algorithm has complexity O(n log n). Using this new algorithm together with a non-linear coding scheme, we can efficiently achieve rates close to the border of the capacity region of the Blackwell channel.

In this paper, we provide a performance analysis of a new class of serial concatenated convolutional codes (SCCC) where the inner encoder can be punctured beyond the unitary rate. The puncturing of the inner encoder is not limited to inner coded bits, but extended to systematic bits. Moreover, it is split into two different puncturings, in correspondence with inner code systematic bits and parity bits. We derive the analytical upper bounds to the error probability of this particular code structure and address suitable design guidelines for the inner code puncturing patterns. We show that the percentile of systematic and parity bits to be deleted strongly depends on the SNR region of interest. In particular, to lower the error floor it is advantageous to put more puncturing on inner systematic bits. Furthermore, we show that puncturing of inner systematic bits should be interleaver dependent. Based on these considerations, we derive design guidelines to obtain well-performing rate-compatible SCCC families. Throughout the paper, the performance of the proposed codes are compared with analytical bounds, and with the performance of PCCC and SCCC proposed in the literature.
