The paper proposes a new approach to minimize the number of relays while maximizing the lifetime of underwater acoustic sensor networks (UASNs). This involves formulating the relay node placement (RNP) problem as a multi-objective optimization problem and employing the multi-objective lexico-graphic method (MOLM) to solve it. To achieve the optimal solution, the MOLM consists of two steps. First, the problem of lifetime maximization is tackled to find RNP solutions. This transforms the RNP into a non-convex optimization problem which is then converted into a convex programming equivalent. The proposed method has the same computational complexity as previous relay-node adjustment (RA) and difference convex algorithm (DCA) methods. The second step introduces a novel relay node selection to reach the optimal number of relays. Simulation results demonstrate that it has superior network lifetime and efficiency compared to RA and DCA.

Distributed quantum computing has been well-known for many years as a system composed of a number of small-capacity quantum circuits. Limitations in the capacity of monolithic quantum computing systems can be overcome by using distributed quantum systems which communicate with each other through known communication links. In our previous study, an algorithm with an exponential complexity was proposed to optimize the number of qubit teleportations required for the communications between two partitions of a distributed quantum circuit. In this work, a genetic algorithm is used to solve the optimization problem in a more efficient way. The results are compared with the previous study and we show that our approach works almost the same with a remarkable speed-up. Moreover, the comparison of the proposed approach based on GA with a random search over the search space verifies the effectiveness of GA.

In this research, an emotion recognition system is developed based on valence/arousal model using electroencephalography (EEG) signals. EEG signals are decomposed into the gamma, beta, alpha and theta frequency bands using discrete wavelet transform (DWT), and spectral features are extracted from each frequency band. Principle component analysis (PCA) is applied to the extracted features by preserving the same dimensionality, as a transform, to make the features mutually uncorrelated. Support vector machine (SVM), K-nearest neighbor (KNN) and artificial neural network (ANN) are used to classify emotional states. The cross-validated SVM with radial basis function (RBF) kernel using extracted features of 10 EEG channels, performs with 91.3% accuracy for arousal and 91.1% accuracy for valence, both in the beta frequency band. Our approach shows better performance compared to existing algorithms applied to the "DEAP" dataset.
