Causal Structure Recovery of Linear Dynamical Systems: An FFT based Approach
Abstract: Learning causal effects from data is a fundamental and well-studied problem across science, especially when the cause-effect relationship is static in nature. However, causal effect is less explored when there are dynamical dependencies, i.e., when dependencies exist between entities across time. Identifying dynamic causal effects from time-series observations is computationally expensive when com… ▽ More

Minimum entropy of a log-concave variable for fixed variance
Abstract: We show that for log-concave real random variables with fixed variance the Shannon differential entropy is minimized for an exponential random variable. We apply this result to derive upper bounds on capacities of additive noise channels with log-concave noise. We also improve constants in the reverse entropy power inequalities for log-concave random variables.

Moments, Concentration, and Entropy of Log-Concave Distributions
Abstract: We utilize and extend a simple and classical mechanism, combining log-concavity and majorization in the convex order to derive moments, concentration, and entropy inequalities for certain classes of log-concave distributions.

A discrete complement of Lyapunov's inequality and its information theoretic consequences
Abstract: We establish a reversal of Lyapunov's inequality for monotone log-concave sequences, settling a conjecture of Havrilla-Tkocz and Melbourne-Tkocz. A strengthened version of the same conjecture is disproved through counter example. We also derive several information theoretic inequalities as consequences. In particular sharp bounds are derived for the varentropy, Rényi entropies, and the concentrati… ▽ More

Quantitative form of Ball's Cube slicing in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and equality cases in the min-entropy power inequality
Abstract: We prove a quantitative form of the celebrated Ball's theorem on cube slicing in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and obtain, as a consequence, equality cases in the min-entropy power inequality. Independently, we also give a quantitative form of Khintchine's inequality in the special case $p=1$.

Bernoulli sums and Rényi entropy inequalities
Abstract: We investigate the Rényi entropy of independent sums of integer valued random variables through Fourier theoretic means, and give sharp comparisons between the variance and the Rényi entropy, for Poisson-Bernoulli variables. As applications we prove that a discrete ``min-entropy power'' is super additive on independent variables up to a universal constant, and give new bounds on an entropic genera… ▽ More

Strongly Convex Divergences
Abstract: We consider a sub-class of the $f$-divergences satisfying a stronger convexity property, which we refer to as strongly convex, or $κ$-convex divergences. We derive new and old relationships, based on convexity arguments, between popular $f$-divergences.

Convex Decreasing Algorithms: Distributed Synthesis and Finite-time Termination in Higher Dimension
Abstract: We introduce a general mathematical framework for distributed algorithms, and a monotonicity property frequently satisfied in application. These properties are leveraged to provide finite-time guarantees for converging algorithms, suited for use in the absence of a central authority. A central application is to consensus algorithms in higher dimension. These pursuits motivate a new peer to peer co… ▽ More

Reversals of Rényi Entropy Inequalities under Log-Concavity
Abstract: We establish a discrete analog of the Rényi entropy comparison due to Bobkov and Madiman. For log-concave variables on the integers, the min entropy is within log e of the usual Shannon entropy. Additionally we investigate the entropic Rogers-Shephard inequality studied by Madiman and Kontoyannis, and establish a sharp Rényi version for certain parameters in both the continuous and discrete cases

An Exact Upper Bound on the $L^p$ Lebesgue Constant and The $\infty$-Rényi Entropy Power Inequality for Integer Valued Random Variables
Abstract: In this paper, we proved an exact asymptotically sharp upper bound of the $L^p$ Lebesgue Constant (i.e. the $L^p$ norm of Dirichlet kernel) for $p\ge 2$. As an application, we also verified the implication of a new $\infty $-Rényi entropy power inequality for integer valued random variables.

Rearrangement and Prekopa-Leindler type inequalities
Abstract: We investigate the interactions of functional rearrangements with Prekopa-Leindler type inequalities. It is shown that that a general class of integral inequalities tighten on rearrangement to "isoperimetric" sets with respect to a relevant measure. Applications to the Borell-Brascamp-Lieb, Borell-Ehrhart, and the recent polar Prekopa-Leindler inequalities are demonstrated. It is also proven that… ▽ More

Error Bounds on a Mixed Entropy Inequality
Abstract: Motivated by the entropy computations relevant to the evaluation of decrease in entropy in bit reset operations, the authors investigate the deficit in an entropic inequality involving two independent random variables, one continuous and the other discrete. On the entropy power inequality for the Rényi entropy of order [0,1]
Abstract: Using a sharp version of the reverse Young inequality, and a Rényi entropy comparison result due to Fradelizi, Madiman, and Wang, the authors are able to derive Rényi entropy power inequalities for log-concave random vectors when Rényi parameters belong to $(0,1)$. Furthermore, the estimates are shown to be sharp up to absolute constants.

Forward and Reverse Entropy Power Inequalities in Convex Geometry
Abstract: The entropy power inequality, which plays a fundamental role in information theory and probability, may be seen as an analogue of the Brunn-Minkowski inequality. Motivated by this connection to Convex Geometry, we survey various recent developments on forward and reverse entropy power inequalities not just for the Shannon-Boltzmann entropy but also more generally for Rényi entropy. In the process,… ▽ More
