Prior studies on the energy efficiency of NOMA overlook the SIC overhead and rely on simplistic power consumption models (PCM). To fill this gap, we first introduce PCM-$κ$ that accounts for SIC-related power expenditure, where $κ$ represents the average power consumption per SIC layer. Then, to investigate the energy efficiency of NOMA and joint transmission (JT)-CoMP NOMA, we formulate a power allocation problem for maximizing the energy efficiency and consequently propose a global approach running at a centralized entity and a local algorithm running at a base station. We evaluate the energy efficiency using PCM-$κ$ and two PCMs commonly used in the literature. Numerical analysis suggests that using simplistic PCMs leads to a few orders of magnitude overestimation of energy efficiency, especially when the receivers have low rate requirements. Despite the superiority of JT-CoMP NOMA over conventional NOMA in finding a feasible power allocation, the difference in their energy efficiency is only marginal. Moreover, when conventional NOMA is feasible, the optimal solution for JT-CoMP NOMA converges to conventional NOMA and NOMA schemes favour the users with the best channel quality.

The steady rise of online shop** goes hand in hand with the development of increasingly complex ML and NLP models. While most use cases are cast as specialized supervised learning problems, we argue that practitioners would greatly benefit from more transferable representations of products. In this work, we build on recent developments in contrastive learning to train FashionCLIP, a CLIP-like model for the fashion industry. We showcase its capabilities for retrieval, classification and grounding, and release our model and code to the community.

Generation of Synthetic Rat Brain MRI scans with a 3D Enhanced Alpha-GAN

Translational brain research using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is becoming increasingly popular as animal models are an essential part of scientific studies and more ultra-high-field scanners are becoming available. Some disadvantages of MRI are the availability of MRI scanners and the time required for a full scanning session (it usually takes over 30 minutes). Privacy laws and the 3Rs ethics rule also make it difficult to create large datasets for training deep learning models. Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) can perform data augmentation with higher quality than other techniques. In this work, the alpha-GAN architecture is used to test its ability to produce realistic 3D MRI scans of the rat brain. As far as the authors are aware, this is the first time that a GAN-based approach has been used for data augmentation in preclinical data. The generated scans are evaluated using various qualitative and quantitative metrics. A Turing test conducted by 4 experts has shown that the generated scans can trick almost any expert. The generated scans were also used to evaluate their impact on the performance of an existing deep learning model developed for segmenting the rat brain into white matter, grey matter and cerebrospinal fluid. The models were compared using the Dice score. The best results for whole brain and white matter segmentation were obtained when 174 real scans and 348 synthetic scans were used, with improvements of 0.0172 and 0.0129, respectively. Using 174 real scans and 87 synthetic scans resulted in improvements of 0.0038 and 0.0764 for grey matter and CSF segmentation, respectively. Thus, by using the proposed new normalisation layer and loss functions, it was possible to improve the realism of the generated rat MRI scans and it was shown that using the generated data improved the segmentation model more than using the conventional data augmentation.

This paper argues that certain ontology design problems are profitably addressed by treating ontologies as theories and by defining a set of operations that create new ontologies, including their constraints, out of other ontologies. The paper first shows how to use the operations in the context of ontology reuse, how to take advantage of the operations to compare different ontologies, or different versions of an ontology, and how the operations may help design mediated schemas in a bottom up fashion. The core of the paper discusses how to compute the operations for lightweight ontologies and addresses the question of minimizing the set of constraints of a lightweight ontology. Finally, the paper describes an implementation of the operations, as a Protégé plug-in.
