Context: To accelerate time-to-market and improve customer satisfaction, software-producing organizations have adopted continuous delivery practices, impacting the relations between development and infrastructure professionals. Yet, no substantial literature has substantially tackled how the software industry structures the organization of development and infrastructure teams.
Objective: In this study, we investigate how software-producing organizations structure their development and infrastructure teams, specifically how is the division of labor among these groups and how they interact.
Method: After brainstorming with 7 DevOps experts to better formulate our research and procedures, we collected and analyzed data from 37 semi-structured interviews with IT professionals, following Grounded Theory guidelines.
Results: After a careful analysis, we identified four common organizational structures: (1) siloed departments, (2) classical DevOps, (3) cross-functional teams, and (4) platform teams. We also observed that some companies are transitioning between these structures.
Conclusion: The main contribution of this study is a theory in the form of a taxonomy that organizes the found structures along with their properties. This theory could guide researchers and practitioners to think about how to better structure development and infrastructure professionals in software-producing organizations.

It is crucial for the wine industry to have methods like electronic nose systems (E-Noses) for real-time monitoring thresholds of acetic acid in wines, preventing its spoilage or determining its quality. In this paper, we prove that the portable and compact self-developed E-Nose, based on thin film semiconductor (SnO2) sensors and trained with an approach that uses deep Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) neural network, can perform early detection of wine spoilage thresholds in routine tasks of wine quality control. To obtain rapid and online detection, we propose a method of rising-window focused on raw data processing to find an early portion of the sensor signals with the best recognition performance. Our approach was compared with the conventional approach employed in E-Noses for gas recognition that involves feature extraction and selection techniques for preprocessing data, succeeded by a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier. The results evidence that is possible to classify three wine spoilage levels in 2.7 seconds after the gas injection point, implying in a methodology 63 times faster than the results obtained with the conventional approach in our experimental setup.

DevOps is a collaborative and multidisciplinary organizational effort to automate continuous delivery of new software updates while guaranteeing their correctness and reliability. The present survey investigates and discusses DevOps challenges from the perspective of engineers, managers, and researchers. We review the literature and develop a DevOps conceptual map, correlating the DevOps automation tools with these concepts. We then discuss their practical implications for engineers, managers, and researchers. Finally, we critically explore some of the most relevant DevOps challenges reported by the literature.

Unusual Events in GitHub Repositories

In large and active software projects, it becomes impractical for a developer to stay aware of all project activity. While it might not be necessary to know about each commit or issue, it is arguably important to know about the ones that are unusual. To investigate this hypothesis, we identified unusual events in 200 GitHub projects using a comprehensive list of ways in which an artifact can be unusual and asked 140 developers responsible for or affected by these events to comment on the usefulness of the corresponding information. Based on 2,096 answers, we identify the subset of unusual events that developers consider particularly useful, including large code modifications and unusual amounts of reviewing activity, along with qualitative evidence on the reasons behind these answers. Our findings provide a means for reducing the amount of information that developers need to parse in order to stay up to date with development activity in their projects.
