In this paper, we develop an accurate closed-form analytic expression of the outage probability for each source-destination (S-D) pair in the two S-D pairs two relays wireless network, where cooperative network coding is applied over Nakagami-$m$ fading channels. For different values of the shape parameter $m$, our analytic relation is validated with Monte-Carlo simulations of the outage probability using the overall equivalent signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) within each source-destination pair. The outage probability is also provided for the extended versions of the network consisting of multiple relays and multiple S-D pairs. Furthermore, we investigate the role of varying the fading factor ($m$ values) on different links in the end-to-end outage probability performance, which yields interesting results that may be crucial for relay selection and power allocation procedures. Moreover, we derive the diversity order for the generalized extended version of cooperative network coded wireless networks.

Space Domain Awareness (SDA) has become increasingly vital with the rapid growth of commercial space activities and the expansion of New Space. This paper stresses the necessity of transitioning from centralized to distributed SDA architectures. The current architecture predominantly relies on individual downhaul, which we propose to transition to on-orbit distribution. Our results demonstrate that the individual downhaul architecture does not scale efficiently with the increasing number of nodes, while on-orbit distribution offers significant improvements. By comparing the centralized architecture with the proposed distributed architecture, we highlight the advantages of enhanced coverage and resilience. Our findings show that on-orbit distribution greatly outperforms individual downhaul in terms of latency and scalability. Specifically, the latency results for on-orbit distribution are substantially lower and more consistent, even as the number of satellites increases. In addition, we address the inherent challenges associated with on-orbit distribution architecture, particularly cybersecurity concerns. We focus on link security to ensure the availability and integrity of data transmission in these advanced SDA systems. Future expectations include further refinement of on-orbit distribution strategies and the development of robust cybersecurity measures to support the scalability and resilience of SDA systems.

Low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite mega constellations are beginning to include laser inter-satellite links (LISLs) to extend the Internet to the most remote locations on Earth. Since the process of establishing these links incurs a setup delay on the order of seconds, a static network topology is generally established well in advance, which is then used for the routing calculations. However, this involves kee** links active even when they are not being used to forward traffic, leading to poor energy efficiency. Motivated by technological advances that are gradually decreasing the LISL setup delays, we foresee scenarios where it will be possible to compute routes and establish dynamic LISLs on demand. This will require considering setup delays as penalties that will affect the end-to-end latency. In this paper, we present a nonlinear optimization model that considers these penalties in the cost function and propose three heuristic algorithms that solve the problem in a tractable way. The algorithms establish different trade-offs in terms of performance and computational complexity. We extensively analyze metrics including average latency, route change rate, outage probability, and jitter in Starlink's Phase I version 2 constellation. The results show the benefit of adaptive routing schemes according to the link setup delay. In particular, more complex schemes can decrease the average end-to-end latency in exchange for an increase in execution time. On the other hand, depending on the maximum tolerated latency, it is possible to use less computationally complex schemes which will be more scalable for the satellite mega constellations of the future.

We address the challenge of develo** an orthogonal time-frequency space (OTFS)-based non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system where each user is modulated using orthogonal pulses in the delay Doppler domain. Building upon the concept of the sufficient (bi)orthogonality train-pulse [1], we extend this idea by introducing Hermite functions, known for their orthogonality properties. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed Hermite functions outperform the traditional OTFS-NOMA schemes, including power-domain (PDM) NOMA and code-domain (CDM) NOMA, in terms of bit error rate (BER) over a high-mobility channel. The algorithm's complexity is minimal, primarily involving the demodulation of OTFS. The spectrum efficiency of Hermite-based OTFS-NOMA is K times that of OTFS-CDM-NOMA scheme, where K is the spreading length of the NOMA waveform.

This study introduces a novel approach to enhance communication networks in the cislunar space by leveraging Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS). Using the ability of RIS to dynamically control electromagnetic waves, this paper tackles the challenges of signal attenuation, directivity, and divergence in cislunar missions, primarily caused by immense distances and that Earth-based station transmitters do not always face the Moon. A new optimization problem is formulated, whose objective is to maximize the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for Earth-to-Moon communications. We derive a closed-form solution to the problem of determining the optimal RIS phase shift configuration based on the effective area of the RIS. Through extensive simulations, this paper demonstrates how optimal adjustments in RIS phase shifts can significantly enhance signal integrity, hinting at the substantial potential of RIS technology to revolutionize long-distance cislunar communication.

Distributed massive multiple-input multiple output (mMIMO) system for low earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks is introduced as a promising technique to provide broadband connectivity. Nevertheless, several challenges persist in implementing distributed mMIMO systems for LEO satellite networks. These challenges include providing scalable massive access implementation as the system complexity increases with network size. Another challenging issue is the asynchronous arrival of signals at the user terminals due to the different propagation delays among distributed antennas in space, which destroys the coherent transmission, and consequently degrades the system performance. In this paper, we propose a scalable distributed mMIMO system for LEO satellite networks based on dynamic user-centric clustering. Aiming to obtain scalable implementation, new algorithms for initial cooperative access, cluster selection, and cluster handover are provided. In addition, phase shift-aware precoding is implemented to compensate for the propagation delay phase shifts. The performance of the proposed user-centric distributed mMIMO is compared with two baseline configurations: the non-cooperative transmission systems, where each user connects to only a single satellite, and the full-cooperative distributed mMIMO systems, where all satellites contribute serving each user. The numerical results show the potential of the proposed distributed mMIMO system to enhance system spectral efficiency when compared to noncooperative transmission systems. Additionally, it demonstrates the ability to minimize the serving cluster size for each user, thereby reducing the overall system complexity in comparison to the full-cooperative distributed mMIMO systems.

The emergence of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite mega-constellations is dynamically transforming the space sector. While free-space optical (FSO) links efficiently facilitate intersatellite data forwarding, they suffer from atmospheric/weather conditions in the space-to-ground link. This study delves into utilizing high-altitude platform stations (HAPS) as elevated relay stations strategically positioned above terrestrial ground stations. We introduce the concept of high-altitude ground stations (HAGS), an innovative approach to enabling the development of all optical LEO satellite constellations. The first contribution is an analysis of the HAGS-based network architecture where the LEO spacecraft only hosts FSO transceivers. Secondly, we execute an extensive simulation campaign to determine the gain of HAGS, including a new equivalency model with the traditional ground station approach. There is no doubt that the Moon has become the center of interest for commercial and international actors. Over the past decade, the number of planned long-term missions has increased dramatically. This makes the establishment of cislunar space networks (CSNs) crucial to orchestrate uninterrupted communications between the Moon and Earth. However, there are numerous challenges, unknowns, and uncertainties associated with cislunar communications that may pose various risks to lunar missions. In this study, we aim to address these challenges for cislunar communications by proposing a machine learning-based cislunar space domain awareness (SDA) capability that enables robust and secure communications. To this end, we first propose a detailed channel model for selected cislunar scenarios. Secondly, we propose two types of interference that could model anomalies that occur in cislunar space and are so far known only to a limited extent. Finally, we discuss our cislunar SDA to work in conjunction with the spacecraft communication system. Our proposed cislunar SDA, involving heuristic learning capabilities with machine learning algorithms, detects interference models with over 96% accuracy. The results demonstrate the promising performance of our cislunar SDA approach for secure and robust cislunar communication.

High throughput satellites (HTSs) outpace traditional satellites due to their multi-beam transmission. The rise of low Earth orbit mega constellations amplifies HTS data rate demands to terabits/second with acceptable latency. This surge in data rate necessitates multiple modems, often exceeding single device capabilities. Consequently, satellites employ several processors, forming a complex packet-switch network. This can lead to potential internal congestion and challenges in adhering to strict quality of service (QoS) constraints. While significant research exists on constellation-level routing, a literature gap remains on the internal routing within a single HTS. The intricacy of this internal network architecture presents a significant challenge to achieve high data rates.
This paper introduces an online optimal flow allocation and scheduling method for HTSs. The problem is presented as a multi-commodity flow instance with different priority data streams. An initial full time horizon model is proposed as a benchmark. We apply a model predictive control (MPC) approach to enable adaptive routing based on current information and the forecast within the prediction time horizon while allowing for deviation of the latter. Importantly, MPC is inherently suited to handle uncertainty in incoming flows. Our approach minimizes the packet loss by optimally and adaptively managing the priority queue schedulers and flow exchanges between satellite processing modules. Central to our method is a routing model focusing on optimal priority scheduling to enhance data rates and maintain QoS. The model's stages are critically evaluated, and results are compared to traditional methods via numerical simulations. Through simulations, our method demonstrates performance nearly on par with the hindsight optimum, showcasing its efficiency and adaptability in addressing satellite communication challenges.

Distributed computing enables Internet of vehicle (IoV) services by collaboratively utilizing the computing resources from the network edge and the vehicles. However, the computing interruption issue caused by frequent edge network handoffs, and a severe shortage of computing resources are two problems in providing IoV services. High altitude platform station (HAPS) computing can be a promising addition to existing distributed computing frameworks because of its wide coverage and strong computational capabilities. In this regard, this paper proposes an adaptive scheme in a new distributed computing framework that involves HAPS computing to deal with the two problems of the IoV. Based on the diverse demands of vehicles, network dynamics, and the time-sensitivity of handoffs, the proposed scheme flexibly divides each task into three parts and assigns them to the vehicle, roadside units (RSUs), and a HAPS to perform synchronous computing. The scheme also constrains the computing of tasks at RSUs such that they are completed before handoffs to avoid the risk of computing interruptions. On this basis, we formulate a delay minimization problem that considers task-splitting ratio, transmit power, bandwidth allocation, and computing resource allocation. To solve the problem, variable replacement and successive convex approximation-based method are proposed. The simulation results show that this scheme not only avoids the negative effects caused by handoffs in a flexible manner, it also takes delay performance into account and maintains the delay stability.

In this paper, the effective capacity of cooperative communication (CC) systems with hybrid Automatic repeat request (HARQ) is derived. The derived expressions are valid for any channel distribution and with any arbitrary number of retransmissions by the source and relay for both HARQ-repetition redundancy (RR) and HARQ-incremental redundancy (IR) over asymmetric channels. As an example, we use the derived EC expression over Rayleigh fading channels. Several results are obtained for a low rate and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We can see that the EC attends its maximum value with a small number of retransmissions. As expected when the relay-destination channel has low SNR, it is better than the relay does not participate especially when we assign a large number of transitions at the relay. For high data rates and strict quality of service (QoS) constraints, it is better to increase the number of relay transmissions. Finally, when we increase the number of source retransmissions, the effective capacity improves even for low values.

Space domain awareness (SDA), a new conceptual idea, has come to the forefront. It aims sensing, detection, identification and countermeasures by providing autonomy, intelligence and flexibility against potential threats in space. In this study, we first present an insightful and clear view of the new space. Secondly, we propose an integrated SDA and communication (ISDAC) system for attacker detection. We assume that the attacker has beam-steering antennas and is capable to vary attack scenarios, such as random attacks on some receiver antennas. To track random patterns and meet SDA requirements, a lightweight convolutional neural network architecture is developed. Exploiting this towards a more efficient satellite network (SatNet), this paper proposes a novel LEO SatNet architecture based on distributed massive multiple-input multiple-output (DM-MIMO) technology allowing ground user terminals to be connected to a cluster of satellites. To this end, we investigate various aspects of DM-MIMO-based satellite network design, the benefits of using this architecture, the associated challenges, and the potential solutions. In addition, we propose a distributed joint power allocation and handover management (D-JPAHM) technique that jointly optimizes the power allocation and handover management processes in a cross-layer manner. This framework aims to maximize the network throughput and minimize the handover rate while considering the quality-of-service (QoS) demands of user terminals and the power capabilities of the satellites. Moreover, we devise an artificial intelligence (AI)-based solution to efficiently implement the proposed D-JPAHM framework in a manner suitable for real-time operation and the dynamic SatNet environment. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to introduce and study DM-MIMO technology in LEO SatNets. Drones are begin used for various purposes such as border security, surveillance, cargo delivery, visual shows and it is not possible to overcome such intensive tasks with a single drone. In order to expedite performing such tasks, drone swarms are employed. The number of drones in a swarm can be high depending on the assigned duty. The current solution to authenticate a single drone using a 5G new radio (NR) network requires the execution of two steps. The first step covers the authentication between a drone and the 5G core network, and the second step is the authentication between the drone and the drone control station. It is not feasible to authenticate each drone in a swarm with the current solution without causing a significant latency.
Authentication keys between a base station (BS) and a user equipment (UE) must be shared with the new BS while performing handover. The drone swarms are heavily mobile and require several handovers from BS to a new BS. Sharing authentication keys for each drone as explained in 5G NR is not scalable for the drone swarms. Also, the drones can be used as a UE or a radio access node on board unmanned aerial vehicle (UxNB). A UxNB may provide service to a drone swarm in a rural area or emergency. The number of handovers may increase and the process of sharing authentication keys between UxNB to new UxNB may be vulnerable to eavesdrop** due to the wireless connectivity.
In this work, we present a method where the time and the number of the communication for the authentication of a new drone joining the swarm are less than 5G NR. In addition, group-based handover solutions for the scenarios in which the base stations are terrestrial or mobile are proposed to overcome the scalability and latency issues in the 5G NR.

In this work, we review the 3GPP standardization activities for the integration of SatNets in 5G and beyond. The 3GPP use cases of SatNets are highlighted and potential requirements to realize them are summarized as well. The impacted areas of New Radio(NR) are discussed with some potential solutions. The foreseen requirements for the management and orchestration of SatNets within 5G are described. Future standardization directions are discussed to support the full integration of SatNets in SixthGeneration (6G) with the goal of ubiquitous global connectivity.

Group authentication is a method of confirmation that a set of users belong to a group and of distributing a common key among them. Unlike the standard authentication schemes where one central authority authenticates users one by one, group authentication can handle the authentication process at once for all members of the group. The recently presented group authentication algorithms mainly exploit Lagrange's polynomial interpolation along with elliptic curve groups over finite fields. As a fresh approach, this work suggests use of linear spaces for group authentication and key establishment for a group of any size. The approach with linear spaces introduces a reduced computation and communication load to establish a common shared key among the group members. The advantages of using vector spaces make the proposed method applicable to energy and resource constrained devices. In addition to providing lightweight authentication and key agreement, this proposal allows any user in a group to make a non-member to be a member, which is expected to be useful for autonomous systems in the future. The scheme is designed in a way that the sponsors of such members can easily be recognized by anyone in the group. Unlike the other group authentication schemes based on Lagrange's polynomial interpolation, the proposed scheme doesn't provide a tool for adversaries to compromise the whole group secrets by using only a few members' shares as well as it allows to recognize a non-member easily, which prevents service interruption attacks.

In this paper, the performance of a power domain downlink multiple-input multiple-output non-orthogonal multiple access system in dual-hop full-duplex (FD) relaying networks is investigated over Nakagami-$m$ fading channels by considering the channel estimation error and feedback delay. Particularly, in the investigated system, the base station equipped with multiple antennas transmits information to all mobile users by applying conventional transmit antenna selection/Alamouti-space-time block coding scheme with the help of a dedicated FD amplify-and-forward relay. The received signals at mobile users are combined according to maximal-ratio combining technique to exploit benefits of receive diversity. In order to demonstrate the superiority of the proposed system, outage probability (OP) is investigated and tight lower bound expressions are derived for the obtained OP. Moreover, asymptotic analyses are also conducted for ideal and practical conditions to provide further insights about the outage behavior in the high signal-to-noise ratio region. Finally, theoretical analyses are validated via Monte Carlo simulations and software defined radio based test-bed implementation.

In this paper, we present a single-pixel compressive direction of arrival (DoA) estimation technique leveraging a graph attention network (GAT)-based deep-learning framework. The physical layer compression is achieved using a coded-aperture technique, probing the spectrum of far-field sources that are incident on the aperture using a set of spatio-temporally incoherent modes. This information is then encoded and compressed into the channel of the coded-aperture. The coded-aperture is based on a metasurface antenna design and it works as a receiver, exhibiting a single-channel and replacing the conventional multichannel raster scan-based solutions for DoA estimation. The GAT network enables the compressive DoA estimation framework to learn the DoA information directly from the measurements acquired using the coded-aperture. This step eliminates the need for an additional reconstruction step and significantly simplifies the processing layer to achieve DoA estimation. We show that the presented GAT integrated single-pixel radar framework can retrieve high fidelity DoA information even under relatively low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) levels.

In parallel with the advances of aerial networks, the use of drones is quickly included in daily activities. According to the characteristics of the operations to be carried out using the drones, the need for simultaneous use of one or more drones has arisen. The use of a drone swarm is preferred rather than the use of a single drone to complete activities such as secure crowd monitoring systems, cargo delivery.
Due to the limited airtime of the drones, new members may be included in the swarm, or there may be a unification of two or more drone swarms when needed. Authentication of the new drone that will take its place in the drone swarm and the rapid mutual-verification of two different swarms of drones are some of the security issues in the swarm structures. In this study, group authentication-based solutions have been put forward to solve the identified security issues. The proposed methods and 5G new radio (NR) authentication methods were compared in terms of time and a significant time difference was obtained. According to the 5G NR standard, it takes 22 ms for a user equipment (UE) to be verified by unified data management (UDM), while in the proposed method, this time varies according to the threshold value of the polynomial used and it is substantially lower than 22 ms for most threshold values.

Edge intelligence, a new paradigm to accelerate artificial intelligence (AI) applications by leveraging computing resources on the network edge, can be used to improve intelligent transportation systems (ITS). However, due to physical limitations and energy-supply constraints, the computing powers of edge equipment are usually limited. High altitude platform station (HAPS) computing can be considered as a promising extension of edge computing. HAPS is deployed in the stratosphere to provide wide coverage and strong computational capabilities. It is suitable to coordinate terrestrial resources and store the fundamental data associated with ITS-based applications. In this work, three computing layers,i.e., vehicles, terrestrial network edges, and HAPS, are integrated to build a computation framework for ITS, where the HAPS data library stores the fundamental data needed for the applications. In addition, the caching technique is introduced for network edges to store some of the fundamental data from the HAPS so that large propagation delays can be reduced. We aim to minimize the delay of the system by optimizing computation offloading and caching decisions as well as bandwidth and computing resource allocations. The simulation results highlight the benefits of HAPS computing for mitigating delays and the significance of caching at network edges.

Accordingly, in the coming years, thousands of LEO satellites will be launched to create ultradense LEO mega-constellations, and the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is working on evolving fifth-generation (5G) systems to support such non-terrestrial networks (NTN). However, many challenges are associated with the deployment of LEOs from communications and networking perspectives. In this paper, we propose a novel cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (CF-mMIMO) based architecture for future ultra-dense LEO SatNets. We discuss various aspects of network design, such as duplexing mode, pilot assignment, beamforming, and handover management. In addition, we propose a joint optimization framework for the power allocation and handover management processes to maximize the network throughput and minimize the handover rate while ensuring quality-of-service (QoS) satisfaction for users. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work to introduce and study CF-mMIMO-based LEO SatNets. Extensive simulation results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed architecture and solutions compared to those of conventional single-satellite connectivity and handover techniques from the literature.

In this work, we propose a secret key generation procedure specifically designed for the inter-spacecraft communication links. As a novel secrecy source, the spacecrafts utilize Doppler frequency shift based measurements. In this way, the mobilities of the communication devices are exploited to generate secret keys, where this resource can be utilized in the environments that the channel fading based key generation methods are not available. The mobility of a spacecraft is modeled as the superposition of a pre-determined component and a dynamic component. We derive the maximum achievable secret key generation rate from the Doppler frequency shift. The proposed secret key generation procedure extracts the Doppler frequency shift in the form of nominal power spectral density samples (NPSDS). We propose a maximum-likelihood (ML) estimation for the NPSDS at the spacecrafts, then a uniform quantizer is utilized to obtain secret key bits. The key disagreement rate (KDR) is analytically obtained for the proposed key generation procedure. Through numerical studies, the tightness of the provided approximations is shown. Both the theoretical and numerical results demonstrate the validity and the practicality of the presented physical layer key generation procedure considering the security of the communication links of spacecrafts.

Direct-to-satellite (DtS) communication has gained importance recently to support globally connected Internet of things (IoT) networks. However, relatively long distances of densely deployed satellite networks around the Earth cause a high path loss. In addition, since high complexity operations such as beamforming, tracking and equalization have to be performed in IoT devices partially, both the hardware complexity and the need for high-capacity batteries of IoT devices increase. The reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have the potential to increase the energy-efficiency and to perform complex signal processing over the transmission environment instead of IoT devices. But, RISs need the information of the cascaded channel in order to change the phase of the incident signal. This study evaluates the pilot signal as a graph and incorporates this information into the graph attention networks (GATs) to track the phase relation through pilot signaling. The proposed GAT-based channel estimation method examines the performance of the DtS IoT networks for different RIS configurations to solve the challenging channel estimation problem. It is shown that the proposed GAT both demonstrates a higher performance with increased robustness under changing conditions and has lower computational complexity compared to conventional deep learning methods. Moreover, bit error rate performance is investigated for RIS designs with discrete and non-uniform phase shifts under channel estimation based on the proposed method. One of the findings in this study is that the channel models of the operating environment and the performance of the channel estimation method must be considered during RIS design to exploit performance improvement as far as possible.

In conventional communication systems, any interference between two communicating points is regarded as unwanted noise since it distorts the received signals. On the other hand, allowing simultaneous transmission and intentionally accepting the interference of signals and even benefiting from it have been considered for a range of wireless applications. As prominent examples, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), joint source-channel coding, and the computation codes are designed to exploit this scenario. They also inspired many other fundamental works from network coding to consensus algorithms. Especially, federated learning is an emerging technology that can be applied to distributed machine learning networks by allowing simultaneous transmission. Although various simultaneous transmission applications exist independently in the literature, their main contributions are all based on the same principle; the superposition property. In this survey, we aim to emphasize the connections between these studies and provide a guide for the readers on the wireless communication techniques that benefit from the superposition of signals. We classify the existing literature depending on their purpose and application area and present their contributions. The survey shows that simultaneous transmission can bring scalability, security, low-latency, low-complexity and energy efficiency for certain distributed wireless scenarios which are inevitable with the emerging Internet of things (IoT) applications.

This paper analyzes the performance of maximum-ratio transmission (MRT)/maximum-ratio combining (MRC) scheme in a dual-hop non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) full-duplex (FD) relay networks in the presence of residual hardware impairments (RHIs). The effects of channel estimation errors (CEEs) and imperfect successive interference cancellation are also considered for a realistic performance analysis. In the network, the base station and multiple users utilize MRT and MRC, respectively, while a dedicated relay consisting of two antennas, one for receiving and the other for broadcasting, operates in amplify-and-forward mode. For performance criterion, exact outage probability (OP) expression is derived for Nakagami-m fading channels. Furthermore, a tight lower bound and asymptotic expressions are also derived to provide more insights into the obtained OP in terms of diversity order and array gain. The obtained numerical results demonstrate the importance of loop-interference cancellation process at FD relay in order for the investigated system to perform better than half-duplex-NOMA counterpart. Also, a performance trade-off between the MRT and MRC schemes is observed in the presence of CEEs among users. Furthermore, it is shown that RHIs have a significant effect on the performance of users with lower power coefficients, however it does not change the diversity order. RHIs and CEEs have the most and least deterioration effects on the system performance, respectively.

Communications are realized as a result of successive decisions at the physical layer, from modulation selection to multi-antenna strategy, and each decision affects the performance of the communication systems. Future communication systems must include extensive capabilities as they will encompass a wide variety of devices and applications. Conventional physical layer decision mechanisms may not meet these requirements, as they are often based on impractical and oversimplifying assumptions that result in a trade-off between complexity and efficiency. By leveraging past experiences, learning-driven designs are promising solutions to present a resilient decision mechanism and enable rapid response even under exceptional circumstances. The corresponding design solutions should evolve following the lines of learning-driven paradigms that offer more autonomy and robustness. This evolution must take place by considering the facts of real-world systems and without restraining assumptions. In this paper, the common assumptions in the physical layer are presented to highlight their discrepancies with practical systems. As a solution, learning algorithms are examined by considering the implementation steps and challenges. Furthermore, these issues are discussed through a real-time case study using software-defined radio nodes to demonstrate the potential performance improvement. A cyber-physical framework is presented to incorporate future remedies.

Due to its very large scale and highly dynamic nature, future LEO satellite networks (SatNets) management is a very complicated and crucial process, especially the mobility management aspect and its two components location management and handover management. In this article, we present a comprehensive and critical review of the state-of-the-art research in LEO SatNets location management. First, we give an overview of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) mobility management standards (e.g., Mobile IPv6 and Proxy Mobile IPv6) and discuss their location management techniques limitations in the environment of future LEO SatNets. We highlight future LEO SatNets mobility characteristics and their challenging features and describe two unprecedented future location management scenarios. A taxonomy of the available location management solutions for LEO SatNets is presented, where the solutions are classified into three approaches. The widespread use of new technologies such as the Internet of things (IoT) and machine type communication(MTC) forces an increase on the number of user equipments(UEs) and MTC devices that are connecting to mobile networks. Inherently, as the number of UEs inside a base station's (BS) coverage area surges, the quality of service (QoS) tends to decline. The use of drone-mounted BS (UxNB) is a solution in places where UEs are densely populated, such as stadiums. UxNB emerges as a promising technology that can be used for capacity injection purposes in the future due to its fast deployment. However, this emerging technology introduces a new security issue. Mutual authentication, creating a communication channel between terrestrial BS and UxNB, and fast handover operations may cause security issues in the use of UxNB for capacity injection. This new protocol also suggests performing UE handover from terrestrial to UxNB as a group. To the best of the authors' knowledge, there is no authentication solution between BSs according to LTE and 5G standards. The proposed scheme provides a solution for the authentication of UxNB by the terrestrial BS. Additionally, a credential sharing phase for each UE in handover is not required in the proposed method. The absence of a credential sharing step saves resources by reducing the number of communications between BSs. Moreover, many UE handover operations are completed in concise time within the proposed group handover method.

In this paper, graph attention network (GAT) is firstly utilized for the channel estimation. In accordance with the 6G expectations, we consider a high-altitude platform station (HAPS) mounted reconfigurable intelligent surface-assisted two-way communications and obtain a low overhead and a high normalized mean square error performance. The performance of the proposed method is investigated on the two-way backhauling link over the RIS-integrated HAPS. The simulation results denote that the GAT estimator overperforms the least square in full-duplex channel estimation. Contrary to the previously introduced methods, GAT at one of the nodes can separately estimate the cascaded channel coefficients. Thus, there is no need to use time-division duplex mode during pilot signaling in full-duplex communication. Moreover, it is shown that the GAT estimator is robust to hardware imperfections and changes in small-scale fading characteristics even if the training data do not include all these variations.

Future integrated terrestrial-aerial-satellite networks will have to exhibit some unprecedented characteristics for the provision of both communications and computation services, and security for a tremendous number of devices with very broad and demanding requirements across multiple networks, operators, and ecosystems. Although 3GPP introduced the concept of self-organization networks (SONs) in 4G and 5G documents to automate network management, even this progressive concept will face several challenges as it may not be sufficiently agile in co** with the immense levels of complexity, heterogeneity, and mobility in the envisioned beyond-5G integrated networks. In the presented vision, we discuss how future integrated networks can be intelligently and autonomously managed to efficiently utilize resources, reduce operational costs, and achieve the targeted Quality of Experience (QoE). We introduce the novel concept of "self-evolving networks (SENs)" framework, which utilizes artificial intelligence, enabled by machine learning (ML) algorithms, to make future integrated networks fully automated and intelligently evolve with respect to the provision, adaptation, optimization, and management aspects of networking, communications, computation, and infrastructure nodes' mobility. To envisage the concept of SEN in future integrated networks, we use the Intelligent Vertical Heterogeneous Network (I-VHetNet) architecture as our reference. The paper discusses five prominent scenarios where SEN plays the main role in providing automated network management. Numerical results provide an insight on how the SEN framework improves the performance of future integrated networks. The paper presents the leading enablers and examines the challenges associated with the application of SEN concept in future integrated networks.

To cope with the unprecedented surge in demand for data computing for the applications, the promising concept of multi-access edge computing (MEC) has been proposed to enable the network edges to provide closer data processing for mobile devices (MDs). Since enormous workloads need to be migrated, and MDs always remain resource-constrained, data offloading from devices to the MEC server will inevitably require more efficient transmission designs. The integration of nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique with MEC has been shown to provide applications with lower latency and higher energy efficiency. However, existing designs of this type have mainly focused on the transmission technique, which is still insufficient. To further advance offloading performance, in this work, we propose an application-driven NOMA enabled computation offloading scheme by exploring the characteristics of applications, where the common data of the application is offloaded through multi-device cooperation. Under the premise of successfully offloading the common data, we formulate the problem as the maximization of individual offloading throughput, where the time allocation and power control are jointly optimized. By using the successive convex approximation (SCA) method, the formulated problem can be iteratively solved. Simulation results demonstrate the convergence of our method and the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

The use of real-time software-controlled reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) units is proposed to increase the reliability of vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communications. The optimum placement problem of the RIS units is formulated by considering their sizes and operating modes. The solution of the problem is given, where it is shown that the placement of the RIS depends on the locations of the transmitter and the receiver. The proposed RIS-supported highway deployment can combat the high path loss experienced by the use of higher frequency bands, including the millimeter-wave and the terahertz bands, that are expected to be used in the next-generation wireless networks, enabling the use of the existing base station deployment plans to remain operational, while providing reliable and energy-efficient connectivity for autonomous vehicles.

The revolution in the low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks will bring changes on their communication models and a shift from the classical bent-pipe architectures to more sophisticated networking platforms. Thanks to technological advancements in microelectronics and micro-systems, the terahertz (THz) band has emerged as a strong candidate for inter-satellite links (ISLs) due to its promise of high data rates. Yet, the propagation conditions of the THz band need to be properly modeled and controlled by utilizing reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) to leverage their full potential. In this work, we first provide an assessment of the use of the THz band for ISLs, and quantify the impact of misalignment fading on error performance. Then, in order to compensate for the high path loss associated with high carrier frequencies, and to further improve the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), we propose the use of RISs mounted on neighboring satellites to enable signal propagation. Based on a mathematical analysis of the problem, we present the error rate expressions for RIS-assisted ISLs with misalignment fading. Also, numerical results show that RIS can leverage the error rate performance and achievable capacity of THz ISLs.

User-centric and low latency communications can be enabled not only by small cells but also through ubiquitous connectivity. Recently, the vertical heterogeneous network (V-HetNet) architecture is proposed to backhaul/fronthaul a large number of small cells. Like an orchestra, the V-HetNet is a polyphony of different communication ensembles, including geostationary orbit (GEO), and low-earth orbit (LEO) satellites (e.g., CubeSats), and networked flying platforms (NFPs) along with terrestrial communication links. In this study, we propose the Terahertz (THz) communications to enable the elements of V-HetNets to function in harmony. As THz links offer a large bandwidth, leading to ultra-high data rates, it is suitable for backhauling and fronthauling small cells. Furthermore, THz communications can support numerous applications from inter-satellite links to in-vivo nanonetworks. However, to savor this harmony, we need accurate channel models. In this paper, the insights obtained through our measurement campaigns are highlighted, to reveal the true potential of THz communications in V-HetNets.

In this work, we propose a novel key reconciliation protocol for the quantum key distribution (QKD). Based on Newton's polynomial interpolation, the proposed protocol aims to correct all erroneous bits at the receiver without revealing information to the eavesdropper. We provide the exact frame error rate (FER) expression of the proposed protocol. The inherent nature of the proposed algorithm ensures correcting all erroneous bits if the algorithm succeeds. We present an information-theoretical proof that the revealed information during the key reconciliation process is equal to zero. We also provide a numerical comparison of our algorithm with the asymptotic performance of the error-correcting codes and two exemplary low-density-parity-check (LDPC) codes. The results highlight that our algorithm provides superior performance when compared to the LDPC codes, regardless of the distance between Alice and Bob. Furthermore, the proposed key reconciliation protocol is usable for the longer quantum link distances than the state-of-the-art protocols.

Spectrum sensing is one of the means of utilizing the scarce source of wireless spectrum efficiently. In this paper, a convolutional neural network (CNN) model employing spectral correlation function which is an effective characterization of cyclostationarity property, is proposed for wireless spectrum sensing and signal identification. The proposed method classifies wireless signals without a priori information and it is implemented in two different settings entitled CASE1 and CASE2. In CASE1, signals are jointly sensed and classified. In CASE2, sensing and classification are conducted in a sequential manner. In contrary to the classical spectrum sensing techniques, the proposed CNN method does not require a statistical decision process and does not need to know the distinct features of signals beforehand. Implementation of the method on the measured overthe-air real-world signals in cellular bands indicates important performance gains when compared to the signal classifying deep learning networks available in the literature and against classical sensing methods. Even though the implementation herein is over cellular signals, the proposed approach can be extended to the detection and classification of any signal that exhibits cyclostationary features. Finally, the measurement-based dataset which is utilized to validate the method is shared for the purposes of reproduction of the results and further research and development.

In this paper, we consider the problem of secret key generation for multiple parties. Multi-user networks usually require a trusted party to efficiently distribute keys to the legitimate users and this process is a weakness against eavesdroppers. With the help of the physical layer security techniques, users can securely decide on a secret key without a trusted party by exploiting the unique properties of the channel. In this context, we develop a physical layer group key generation scheme that is also based on the ideas of the analog function computation studies. We firstly consider the key generation as a function to be computed over the wireless channel and propose two novel methods depending on the users transmission capability (i.e. half-duplex and full-duplex transmissions). Secondly, we exploit the uniqueness of the prime integers in order to enable the simultaneous transmission of the users for key generation. As a result, our approach contributes to the scalability of the existing physical layer key generation algorithms since all users transmit simultaneously rather than using pairwise communications. We prove that our half-duplex network model reduces the required number of communications for group key generation down to a linear scale. Furthermore, the full-duplex network model reduces to a constant scale.

Automatic modulation classification (AMC) has been studied for more than a quarter of a century; however, it has been difficult to design a classifier that operates successfully under changing multipath fading conditions and other impairments. Recently, deep learning (DL)-based methods are adopted by AMC systems and major improvements are reported. In this paper, a novel convolutional neural network (CNN) classifier model is proposed to classify modulation classes in terms of their families, i.e., types. The proposed classifier is robust against realistic wireless channel impairments and in relation to that when the data sets that are utilized for testing and evaluating the proposed methods are considered, it is seen that RadioML2016.10a is the main dataset utilized for testing and evaluation of the proposed methods. However, the channel effects incorporated in this dataset and some others may lack the appropriate modeling of the real-world conditions since it only considers two distributions for channel models for a single tap configuration. Therefore, in this paper, a more comprehensive dataset, named as HisarMod2019.1, is also introduced, considering real-life applicability. HisarMod2019.1 includes 26 modulation classes passing through the channels with 5 different fading types and several numbers of taps for classification. It is shown that the proposed model performs better than the existing models in terms of both accuracy and training time under more realistic conditions. Even more, surpassed their performance when the RadioML2016.10a dataset is utilized.

Internet of Things (IoT) networks are becoming a part of our daily lives, as the number of IoT devices around us are surging. The authentication of millions of connected things and the distribution and management of secret keys between these devices pose challenging research problems. Current one-to-one authentication schemes do not take the resource limitations of IoT devices into consideration. Nor do they address the scalability problem of massive machine type communication (mMTC) networks. Group authentication schemes (GAS), on the other hand, have emerged as novel approaches for many-to-many authentication problems. They can be used to simultaneously authenticate numerous resource-constrained devices. However, existing GAS are not energy efficient, and they do not provide enough security for widespread use. In this paper, we propose a lightweight GAS that significantly reduces energy consumption on devices, providing almost 80% energy savings when compared to the state-of-the-art solutions. Our approach is also resistant to the replay and man-in-the-middle attacks. The proposed approach also includes a solution for key agreement and key distribution problems in mMTC environments. Moreover, this approach can be used in both centralized and decentralized group authentication scenarios. The proposed approach has the potential to address the fast authentication requirements of the envisioned agile 6G networks, supported through aerial networking nodes.
