This paper investigates the radio resource management (RRM) design for multiuser rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA), accounting for various characteristics of practical wireless systems, such as the use of discrete rates, the inability to serve all users, and the imperfect successive interference cancellation (SIC). Specifically, failure to consider these characteristics in RRM design may lead to inefficient use of radio resources. Therefore, we formulate the RRM of RSMA as optimization problems to maximize respectively the weighted sum rate (WSR) and weighted energy efficiency (WEE), and jointly optimize the beamforming, user admission, discrete/continuous rates, accounting for imperfect SIC, which result in nonconvex mixed-integer nonlinear programs that are challenging to solve. Despite the difficulty of the optimization problems, we develop algorithms that can find high-quality solutions. We show via simulations that carefully accounting for the aforementioned characteristics, can lead to significant gains. Precisely, by considering that transmission rates are discrete, the transmit power can be utilized more intelligently, allocating just enough power to guarantee a given discrete rate. Additionally, we reveal that user admission plays a crucial role in RSMA, enabling additional gains compared to random admission by facilitating the servicing of selected users with mutually beneficial channel characteristics. Furthermore, provisioning for possibly imperfect SIC makes RSMA more robust and reliable.

In this letter, we consider linear precoding for downlink massive multi-user (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems. We propose the novel successively-regularized zero forcing (SRZF) precoding, which exploits successive null spaces of the MIMO channels of the users, along with regularization, to control the inter-user interference (IUI) and to enhance performance and robustness to imperfect channel state information (CSI) at the base station (BS). We study the IUI characteristics of the proposed SRZF precoding for perfect and imperfect CSI at the BS. Furthermore, via computer simulations, we compare the sum rate of SRZF precoding with those of several baseline schemes including conventional and regularized zero forcing (ZF) precoding. Our simulation results reveal that, for massive MIMO systems with inter-user channel correlations, the proposed SRZF precoding significantly outperforms the considered baseline schemes for both perfect and imperfect CSI at the BS.

In this paper, we consider the precoder design for downlink multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) systems. The proposed scheme with simultaneous diagonalization (SD) decomposes the MIMO channel matrices of the users into scalar channels via higher-order generalized singular value decomposition for the common message (CM) and block diagonalization (BD) for the private messages, thereby enabling low-complexity element-by-element successive interference cancellation (SIC) and decoding at the receivers. Furthermore, the proposed SD MIMO-RSMA overcomes a critical limitation in RSMA systems, whereby the achievable rate of the CM is restricted by the users with weak effective MIMO channel for the CM, by excluding a subset of users from decoding the CM. We formulate a non-convex weighted sum rate (WSR) optimization problem for SD MIMO-RSMA and solve it via successive convex approximation to obtain a locally optimal solution. Our simulation results reveal that, for both perfect and imperfect CSI, the proposed SD MIMO-RSMA with user exclusion outperforms baseline MIMO-RSMA schemes and linear BD precoding.

In this paper, we consider the precoder design for an underloaded or critically loaded downlink multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication system. We propose novel precoding and decoding schemes which enhance system performance based on rate splitting at the transmitter and single-stage successive interference cancellation at the receivers. The proposed successive null-space (SNS) precoding utilizes linear combinations of the null-space basis vectors of the successively augmented MIMO channel matrices of the users as precoding vectors to adjust the inter-user-interference experienced by the receivers. We formulate a non-convex weighted sum rate optimization problem for the precoding vectors and the associated power allocation for the proposed SNS-based MIMO-rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) scheme. We obtain a suboptimal solution for this problem via successive convex approximation. Moreover, we study the robustness of the proposed precoding scheme to imperfect channel state information (CSI) at the base station via derivative-based sensitivity analysis. Our analysis and simulation results reveal the enhanced performance and robustness of the proposed SNS-based MIMO-RSMA scheme over several baseline multi-user MIMO schemes, especially for imperfect CSI.

Predictive materials synthesis is the primary bottleneck in realizing new functional and quantum materials. Strategies for synthesis of promising materials are currently identified by time-consuming trial and error approaches and there are no known predictive schemes to design synthesis parameters for new materials. We use reinforcement learning to predict optimal synthesis schedules, i.e. a time-sequence of reaction conditions like temperatures and reactant concentrations, for the synthesis of a prototypical quantum material, semiconducting monolayer MoS$_{2}$, using chemical vapor deposition. The predictive reinforcement leaning agent is coupled to a deep generative model to capture the crystallinity and phase-composition of synthesized MoS$_{2}$ during CVD synthesis as a function of time-dependent synthesis conditions. This model, trained on 10000 computational synthesis simulations, successfully learned threshold temperatures and chemical potentials for the onset of chemical reactions and predicted new synthesis schedules for producing well-sulfidized crystalline and phase-pure MoS$_{2}$, which were validated by computational synthesis simulations. The model can be extended to predict profiles for synthesis of complex structures including multi-phase heterostructures and can also predict long-time behavior of reacting systems, far beyond the domain of the MD simulations used to train the model, making these predictions directly relevant to experimental synthesis.

In this work, a combined experimental and simulation approach uses an automated closed loop via an active-learner, which is initialized by X-ray and neutron diffraction measurements, and sequentially improves a machine-learning model until the experimentally predetermined phase space is covered. A multi-phase potential is generated for a canonical example of the archetypal refractory oxide, HfO2, by drawing a minimum number of training configurations from room temperature to the liquid state at ~2900oC. The method significantly reduces model development time and human effort.

In this paper, we consider the uplink and downlink precoder design for two-user power-domain multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems. We propose novel uplink and downlink precoding and decoding schemes that lower the decoding complexity at the receiver by decomposing the MIMO-NOMA channels of the users into multiple single-input single-output (SISO)-NOMA channels via simultaneous triangularization (ST) of the MIMO channels of the users and a low-complexity self-interference cancellation at the receiver. The proposed ST MIMO-NOMA schemes avoid channel inversion at transmitter and receiver and take advantage of the null spaces of the MIMO channels of the users, which is beneficial for the ergodic achievable rate performance. We characterize the maximum ergodic achievable rate regions of the proposed uplink and downlink ST MIMO-NOMA schemes, and compare them with respective upper bounds, baseline MIMO-NOMA precoding schemes, and orthogonal multiple access (OMA). Our results illustrate that the proposed schemes significantly outperform the considered baseline MIMO-NOMA precoding schemes and OMA, and have a small gap to the respective upper bounds for most channel conditions and user rates. Moreover, we show that a hybrid scheme, which performs time sharing between the proposed uplink and downlink ST MIMO-NOMA and single-user MIMO, can improve performance even further.

In this paper, we consider the downlink precoder design for two-user power-domain multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems. The proposed precoding scheme is based on simultaneous triangularization and decomposes the MIMO-NOMA channels of the two users into multiple single-input single-output NOMA channels, assuming low-complexity self-interference cancellation at the users. In contrast to the precoding schemes based on simultaneous diagonalization (SD), the proposed scheme avoids inverting the MIMO channels of the users, thereby enhancing the ergodic rate performance. Furthermore, we develop a power allocation algorithm based on the convex-concave procedure, and exploit it to obtain the ergodic achievable rate region of the proposed MIMO-NOMA scheme. Our results illustrate that the proposed scheme outperforms baseline precoding schemes based on SD and orthogonal multiple access for a wide range of user rates and performs close to the dirty paper coding upper bound. The ergodic rate region can further be improved by utilizing a hybrid scheme based on time sharing between the proposed MIMO-NOMA scheme and point-to-point MIMO.

In this paper, we investigate the downlink precoder design for two-user power-domain multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). We propose a novel user-assisted (UA) simultaneous diagonalization (SD) based MIMO-NOMA scheme that achieves SD of the MIMO channels of both users through a combination of precoder design and low-complexity self-interference cancellation at the users, thereby considerably lowering the overall decoding complexity compared to joint decoding. The achievable ergodic user rates of the proposed scheme are analyzed for Rayleigh fading channels based on a finite-size random matrix theory framework, which is further exploited to develop a statistical power allocation algorithm. Simulation and numerical results show that the proposed UA-SD MIMO-NOMA scheme significantly outperforms orthogonal multiple access and a benchmark precoder design performing SD via generalized singular value decomposition in terms of the achievable ergodic rate region for most user rates. The ergodic rate region is further enhanced by a hybrid scheme which performs time sharing between the proposed UA-SD MIMO-NOMA scheme and single-user MIMO.

There is a recent surge of interest in cross-modal representation learning corresponding to images and text. The main challenge lies in map** images and text to a shared latent space where the embeddings corresponding to a similar semantic concept lie closer to each other than the embeddings corresponding to different semantic concepts, irrespective of the modality. Ranking losses are commonly used to create such shared latent space -- however, they do not impose any constraints on inter-class relationships resulting in neighboring clusters to be completely unrelated. The works in the domain of visual semantic embeddings address this problem by first constructing a semantic embedding space based on some external knowledge and projecting image embeddings onto this fixed semantic embedding space. These works are confined only to image domain and constraining the embeddings to a fixed space adds additional burden on learning. This paper proposes a novel method, HUSE, to learn cross-modal representation with semantic information. HUSE learns a shared latent space where the distance between any two universal embeddings is similar to the distance between their corresponding class embeddings in the semantic embedding space. HUSE also uses a classification objective with a shared classification layer to make sure that the image and text embeddings are in the same shared latent space. Experiments on UPMC Food-101 show our method outperforms previous state-of-the-art on retrieval, hierarchical precision and classification results.

We propose a novel active learning scheme for automatically sampling a minimum number of uncorrelated configurations for fitting the Gaussian Approximation Potential (GAP). Our active learning scheme consists of an unsupervised machine learning (ML) scheme coupled to Bayesian optimization technique that evaluates the GAP model. We apply this scheme to a Hafnium dioxide (HfO2) dataset generated from a melt-quench ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) protocol. Our results show that the active learning scheme, with no prior knowledge of the dataset is able to extract a configuration that reaches the required energy fit tolerance. Further, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations performed using this active learned GAP model on 6144-atom systems of amorphous and liquid state elucidate the structural properties of HfO2 with near ab initio precision and quench rates (i.e. 1.0 K/ps) not accessible via AIMD. The melt and amorphous x-ray structural factors generated from our simulation are in good agreement with experiment. Additionally, the calculated diffusion constants are in good agreement with previous ab initio studies.
