Stacked intelligent metasurface (SIM) is an emerging design that consists of multiple layers of metasurfaces. A SIM enables holographic multiple-input multiple-output (HMIMO) precoding in the wave domain, which results in the reduction of energy consumption and hardware cost. On the ground of multiuser beamforming, this letter focuses on the downlink achievable rate and its maximization. Contrary to previous works on multiuser SIM, we consider statistical channel state information (CSI) as opposed to instantaneous CSI to overcome challenges such as large overhead. Also, we examine the performance of large surfaces. We apply an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm regarding the phases of the SIM and the allocated transmit power. Simulations illustrate the performance of the considered large SIM-assisted design as well as the comparison between different CSI considerations.

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is expected to play a prominent role among emerging technologies in future wireless communications. In particular, a communication radar coexistence system is degraded significantly by mutual interference. In this work, given the advantages of promising reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), we propose a simultaneously transmitting and reflecting RIS (STAR-RIS)-assisted radar coexistence system where a STAR-RIS is introduced to improve the communication performance while suppressing the mutual interference and providing full space coverage. Based on the realistic conditions of correlated fading, and the presence of multiple user equipments (UEs) at both sides of the RIS, we derive the achievable rates at the radar and the communication receiver side in closed forms in terms of statistical channel state information (CSI). Next, we perform alternating optimization (AO) for optimizing the STAR-RIS and the radar beamforming. Regarding the former, we optimize the amplitudes and phase shifts of the STAR-RIS through a projected gradient ascent algorithm (PGAM) simultaneously with respect to the amplitudes and phase shifts of the surface for both energy splitting (ES) and mode switching (MS) operation protocols. The proposed optimization saves enough overhead since it can be performed every several coherence intervals. This property is particularly beneficial compared to reflecting-only RIS because a STAR-RIS includes the double number of variables, which require increased overhead. Finally, simulation results illustrate how the proposed architecture outperforms the conventional RIS counterpart, and show how the various parameters affect the performance. Moreover, a benchmark full instantaneous CSI (I-CSI) based design is provided and shown to result in higher sum-rate but also in large overhead associated with complexity.

Stacked intelligent metasurfaces (SIM) is a revolutionary technology, which can outperform its single-layer counterparts by performing advanced signal processing relying on wave propagation. In this work, we exploit SIM to enable transmit precoding and receiver combining in holographic multiple-input multiple-output (HMIMO) communications, and we study the achievable rate by formulating a joint optimization problem of the SIM phase shifts at both sides of the transceiver and the covariance matrix of the transmitted signal. Notably, we propose its solution by means of an iterative optimization algorithm that relies on the projected gradient method, and accounts for all optimization parameters simultaneously. We also obtain the step size guaranteeing the convergence of the proposed algorithm. Simulation results provide fundamental insights such the performance improvements compared to the single-RIS counterpart and conventional MIMO system. Remarkably, the proposed algorithm results in the same achievable rate as the alternating optimization (AO) benchmark but with a less number of iterations.

Although reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technology for sha** the propagation environment, it consists of a single-layer structure within inherent limitations regarding the number of beam steering patterns. Based on the recently revolutionary technology, denoted as stacked intelligent metasurface (SIM), we propose its implementation not only on the base station (BS) side in a massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) setup but also in the intermediate space between the base station and the users to adjust the environment further as needed. For the sake of convenience, we call the former BS SIM (BSIM), and the latter channel SIM (CSIM). Hence, we achieve wave-based combining at the BS and wave-based configuration at the intermediate space. Specifically, we propose a channel estimation method with reduced overhead, being crucial for SIMassisted communications. Next, we derive the uplink sum spectral efficiency (SE) in closed form in terms of statistical channel state information (CSI). Notably, we optimize the phase shifts of both BSIM and CSIM simultaneously by using the projected gradient ascent method (PGAM). Compared to previous works on SIMs, we study the uplink transmission, a mMIMO setup, channel estimation in a single phase, a second SIM at the intermediate space, and simultaneous optimization of the two SIMs. Simulation results show the impact of various parameters on the sum SE, and demonstrate the superiority of our optimization approach compared to the alternating optimization (AO) method.

Simultaneously transmitting and reflecting \textcolor{black}{reconfigurable intelligent surface} (STAR-RIS) is a promising implementation of RIS-assisted systems that enables full-space coverage. However, STAR-RIS as well as conventional RIS suffer from the double-fading effect. Thus, in this paper, we propose the marriage of active RIS and STAR-RIS, denoted as ASTARS for massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) systems, and we focus on the energy splitting (ES) and mode switching (MS) protocols. Compared to prior literature, we consider the impact of correlated fading, and we rely our analysis on the two timescale protocol, being dependent on statistical channel state information (CSI). On this ground, we propose a channel estimation method for ASTARS with reduced overhead that accounts for its architecture. Next, we derive a \textcolor{black}{closed-form expression} for the achievable sum-rate for both types of users in the transmission and reflection regions in a unified approach with significant practical advantages such as reduced complexity and overhead, which result in a lower number of required iterations for convergence compared to an alternating optimization (AO) approach. Notably, we maximize simultaneously the amplitudes, the phase shifts, and the active amplifying coefficients of the ASTARS by applying the projected gradient ascent method (PGAM). This paper investigates the performance of downlink simultaneous transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS)-assisted cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) systems, where user equipments (UEs) are located on both sides of the RIS.
We account for correlated Rayleigh fading and multiple antennas per access point (AP), while the maximum ratio (MR) beamforming is applied for the design of the active beamforming in terms of instantaneous channel state information (CSI). Firstly, we rely on an aggregated channel estimation approach that reduces the overhead required for channel estimation while providing sufficient information for data processing. We obtain the normalized mean square error (NMSE) of the channel estimate per AP, and design the passive beamforming (PB) of the surface based on the long-time statistical CSI. Next, we derive the received signal in the asymptotic regime of numbers of APs and surface elements. Then, we obtain a closed-form expression of the downlink achievable rate for arbitrary numbers of APs and STAR-RIS elements under statistical CSI. Finally, based on the derived expressions, the numerical results show the feasibility and the advantages of deploying a STAR-RIS into conventional CF mMIMO systems. In particular, we theoretically analyze the properties of STAR-RIS-assisted CF mMIMO systems and reveal explicit insights in terms of the impact of channel correlation, the number of surface elements, and the pilot contamination on the achievable rate.

Recently, the concept of simultaneously transmitting and reflecting RIS (STAR-RIS) has appeared but the study of minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and the impact of hardware impairments (HWIs) remain open. In addition to previous works on STAR-RIS, we consider a massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) base station (BS) serving multiple user equipments (UEs) at both sides of the RIS. Specifically, in this work, focusing on the downlink of a single cell, we derive the minimum SINR obtained by the optimal linear precoder (OLP) with HWIs in closed form. The OLP maximises the minimum SINR subject to a given power constraint for any given passive beamforming matrix (PBM). Next, we obtain deterministic equivalents (DEs) for the OLP and the minimum SINR, which are then used to optimise the PBM. Notably, based on the DEs and statistical channel state information (CSI), we optimise simultaneously the amplitude and phase shift by using a projected gradient ascent algorithm (PGAM) for both energy splitting (ES) and mode switching (MS) STAR-RIS operation protocols with reduced feedback, \textcolor{black}{which is quite crucial for STAR-RIS systems that include the double number or variables compared to reflecting only RIS.} Simulations verify the analytical results, shed light on the impact of HWIs, and demonstrate the better performance of STAR-RIS compared to conventional RIS.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has emerged as a cost-effective and promising solution to extend the wireless signal coverage and improve the performance via passive signal reflection. Different from existing works which do not account for the cooperation between RISs or do not provide full space coverage, we propose the marriage of cooperative double-RIS with simultaneously transmitting and reflecting RIS (STAR-RIS) technologies denoted as RIS/STAR-RIS under correlated Rayleigh fading conditions to assist the communication in a massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) setup. The proposed architecture is superior since it enjoys the benefits of the individual designs. We introduce a channel estimation approach of the cascaded channels with reduced overhead. Also, we obtain the deterministic equivalent (DE) of the downlink achievable sum spectral efficiency (SE) in closed form based on large-scale statistics. Terahertz (THz) band is expected to be one of the key enabling technologies of the sixth generation (6G) wireless networks because of its abundant available bandwidth and very narrow beam width. Due to high frequency operations, electrically small array apertures are employed, and the signal wavefront becomes spherical in the near-field. Therefore, near-field signal model should be considered for channel acquisition in THz systems. Unlike prior works which mostly ignore the impact of near-field beam-split (NB) and consider either narrowband scenario or far-field models, this paper introduces both a model-based and a model-free techniques for wideband THz channel estimation in the presence of NB. The model-based approach is based on orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm, for which we design an NB-aware dictionary. The key idea is to exploit the angular and range deviations due to the NB. We then employ the OMP algorithm, which accounts for the deviations thereby ipso facto mitigating the effect of NB. We further introduce a federated learning (FL)-based approach as a model-free solution for channel estimation in a multi-user scenario to achieve reduced complexity and training overhead. Through numerical simulations, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed channel estimation techniques for wideband THz systems in comparison with the existing state-of-the-art techniques.

The incorporation of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) into massive multiple-input-multiple-output (mMIMO) systems can unleash the potential of next-generation networks by improving the performance of user equipments (UEs) in service dead zones. However, their requirement for accurate channel state information (CSI) is critical, and especially, applications with UE mobility that induce channel aging make challenging the achievement of adequate quality of service. Hence, in this work, we investigate the impact of channel aging on the performance of RIS-assisted mMIMO systems under both spatial correlation and imperfect CSI conditions. Specifically, by accounting for channel aging during both uplink training and downlink data transmission phases, we first perform minimum mean square error (MMSE) channel estimation to obtain the UE effective channels with low overhead similar to conventional systems without RIS. Next, we derive the downlink achievable sum spectral efficiency (SE) with regularized zero-forcing (RZF) precoding in closed-form being dependent only on large-scale statistics by using the deterministic equivalent (DE) analysis. Subsequently, we present the attractive optimization of the achievable sum SE with respect to the phase shifts and the total transmit power that can be performed every several coherence intervals due to the slow variation of the large-scale statistics. Numerical results validate the analytical expressions and demonstrate the performance while allowing the extraction of insightful design conclusions for common scenarios including UE mobility. In particular, channel aging degrades the performance but its impact can be controlled by choosing appropriately the frame duration or by increasing the number of RIS elements.

For the demonstration of ultra-wideband bandwidth and pencil-beamforming, the terahertz (THz)-band has been envisioned as one of the key enabling technologies for the sixth generation networks. However, the acquisition of the THz channel entails several unique challenges such as severe path loss and beam-split. Prior works usually employ ultra-massive arrays and additional hardware components comprised of time-delayers to compensate for these loses. In order to provide a cost-effective solution, this paper introduces a sparse-Bayesian-learning (SBL) technique for joint channel and beam-split estimation. Specifically, we first model the beam-split as an array perturbation inspired from array signal processing. Next, a low-complexity approach is developed by exploiting the line-of-sight-dominant feature of THz channel to reduce the computational complexity involved in the proposed SBL technique for channel estimation (SBCE). Additionally, based on federated-learning, we implement a model-free technique to the proposed model-based SBCE solution. Further to that, we examine the near-field considerations of THz channel, and introduce the range-dependent near-field beam-split. The theoretical performance bounds, i.e., Cramér-Rao lower bounds, are derived both for near- and far-field parameters, e.g., user directions, beam-split and ranges. Numerical simulations demonstrate that SBCE outperforms the existing approaches and exhibits lower hardware cost.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a promising technology to deliver the higher spectral and energy requirements in fifth-generation (5G) and beyond wireless networks while sha** the propagation environment. Such a design can be further enhanced with massive multiple-input-multiple-output (mMIMO) characteristics towards boosting the network performance. However, channel reciprocity, assumed in 5G systems such as mMIMO, appears to be questioned in practice by recent studies on IRS. Hence, contrary to previous works, we consider frequency division duplexing (FDD) to study the performance of an IRS-assisted mMIMO system. However, FDD is not suitable for large number of antennas architectures. For this reason we employ the joint spatial division and multiplexing (JSDM) approach exploiting the structure of the correlation of the channel vectors to reduce the channel state information (CSI) uplink feedback, and thus, allowing the use even of a large number of antennas at the base station. JSDM entails dual-structured precoding and clustering the user equipments (UEs) with the same covariance matrix into groups. Specifically, we derive the sum spectral efficiency (SE) based on statistical CSI in terms of large-scale statistics by using the deterministic equivalent (DE) analysis while accounting for correlated Rayleigh fading. Subsequently, we formulate the optimization problem concerning the sum SE with respect to the reflecting beamforming matrix (RBM) and the total transmit power, which can be performed at every several coherence intervals by taking advantage of the slow-time variation of the large-scale statistics. This notable property contributes further to the decrease of the feedback overhead.

In particular, we obtain a novel closed-form expression of the coverage probability of a single-input single-output (SISO) system assisted by two large IRSs while being dependent on the corresponding arbitrary reflecting beamforming matrices (RBMs) and large-scale statistics in terms of correlation matrices. Standard cell-free (CF) multiple-input-multiple-output (mMIMO) systems is a promising technology to cover the demands for higher data rates in fifth-generation (5G) networks and beyond. These systems assume a large number of distributed access points (APs) using joint coherent transmission to communicate with the users. However, CF mMIMO systems present an increasing computational complexity as the number of users increases. Scalable cell-free CF (SCF) systems have been proposed to face this challenge. Given that the cost-efficient deployment of such large networks requires low-cost transceivers, which are prone to unavoidable hardware imperfections, realistic evaluations of SCF mMIMO systems should take them into account before implementation. Hence, in this work, we focus on the impact of hardware impairments (HWIs) on the SCF mMIMO systems through a general model accounting for both additive and multiplicative impairments. Notably, there is no other work in the literature studying the impact of phase noise (PN) in the local oscillators (LOs) of CF mMIMO systems or in general the impact of any HWIs in SCF mMIMO systems. In particular, we derive upper and lower bounds on the uplink capacity accounting for HWIs. Moreover, we obtain the optimal hardware-aware (HA) partial minimum mean-squared error (PMMSE) combiner. Especially, the lower bound is derived in closed-form using the theory of deterministic equivalents (DEs). Among the interesting findings, we observe that separate LOs (SLOs) outperform a common LO (CLO), and the additive transmit distortion degrades more the performance than the additive receive distortion.

Many of the machine learning tasks rely on centralized learning (CL), which requires the transmission of local datasets from the clients to a parameter server (PS) entailing huge communication overhead. To overcome this, federated learning (FL) has been suggested as a promising tool, wherein the clients send only the model updates to the PS instead of the whole dataset. However, FL demands powerful computational resources from the clients. In practice, not all the clients have sufficient computational resources to participate in training. To address this common scenario, we propose a more efficient approach called hybrid federated and centralized learning (HFCL), wherein only the clients with sufficient resources employ FL, while the remaining ones send their datasets to the PS, which computes the model on behalf of them. Then, the model parameters are aggregated at the PS. To improve the efficiency of dataset transmission, we propose two different techniques: i) increased computation-per-client and ii) sequential data transmission. Notably, the HFCL frameworks outperform FL with up to 20\% improvement in the learning accuracy when only half of the clients perform FL while having 50\% less communication overhead than CL since all the clients collaborate on the learning process with their datasets.

This paper suggests the use of multiple distributed intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) towards a smarter control of the propagation environment. Notably, we also take into account the inevitable correlated Rayleigh fading in IRS-assisted systems. In particular, in a single-input and single-output (SISO) system, we consider and compare two insightful scenarios, namely, a finite number of large IRSs and a large number of finite size IRSs to show which implementation method is more advantageous. In this direction, we derive the coverage probability in closed-form for both cases contingent on statistical channel state information (CSI) by using the deterministic equivalent (DE) analysis. Next, we obtain the optimal coverage probability. Among others, numerical results reveal that the addition of more surfaces outperforms the design scheme of adding more elements per surface. Moreover, in the case of uncorrelated Rayleigh fading, statistical CSI-based IRS systems do not allow the optimization of the coverage probability.

We consider a two-way half-duplex decode-and-forward (DF) relaying system with multiple pairs of single-antenna users assisted by a cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) architecture with multiple-antenna access points (APs). Under the practical constraint of imperfect channel state information (CSI), we derive the achievable sum spectral efficiency (SE) for a finite number of APs with maximum ratio (MR) linear processing for both reception and transmission in closed-form. Notably, the proposed CF mMIMO relaying architecture, exploiting the spatial diversity, and providing better coverage, outperforms the conventional collocated mMIMO deployment. Moreover, we shed light on the power-scaling laws maintaining a specific SE as the number of APs grows. A thorough examination of the interplay between the transmit powers per pilot symbol and user/APs takes place, and useful conclusions are extracted. Finally, differently to the common approach for power control in CF mMIMO systems, we design a power allocation scheme maximizing the sum SE.

Most works in IRS-assisted systems have ignored the impact of the inevitable residual hardware impairments (HWIs) at both the transceiver hardware and the IRS while any relevant works have addressed only simple scenarios, e.g., with single-antenna network nodes and/or without taking the randomness of phase noise at the IRS into account. In this work, we aim at filling up this gap by considering a general IRS-assisted multi-user (MU) multiple-input single-output (MISO) system with imperfect CSI and correlated Rayleigh fading. In parallel, we present a general computationally efficient methodology for IRS reflect beamforming (RB) optimization. Specifically, we introduce an advantageous channel estimation (CE) method for such systems accounting for the HWIs. Moreover, we derive the uplink achievable spectral efficiency (SE) with maximal-ratio combining (MRC) receiver, displaying three significant advantages being: 1) its closed-form expression, 2) its dependence only on large-scale statistics, and 3) its low training overhead. Notably, by exploiting the first two benefits, we achieve to perform optimization with respect to the reflect beamforming matrix (RBM) that can take place only at every several coherence intervals, and thus, reduces significantly the computational cost compared to other methods which require frequent phase optimization. Among the insightful observations, we highlight that uncorrelated Rayleigh fading does not allow optimization of the SE, which makes the application of an IRS ineffective. Also, in the case that the phase drifts, describing the distortion of the phases in the RBM, are uniformly distributed, the presence of an IRS provides no advantage. The analytical results outperform previous works and are verified by Monte-Carlo (MC) simulations.

Cell-free (CF) massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) has emerged as an alternative deployment for conventional cellular massive MIMO networks. Prior works relied on the strong assumption (quite idealized) that the APs are uniformly distributed, and actually, this randomness was considered during the simulation and not in the analysis. However, in practice, ongoing and future networks become denser and increasingly irregular. Having this in mind, we consider that the AP locations are modeled by means of a Poisson point process (PPP) which is a more realistic model for the spatial randomness than a grid or uniform deployment. In particular, by virtue of stochastic geometry tools, we derive both the downlink coverage probability and achievable rate. Notably, this is the only work providing the coverage probability and shedding light on this aspect of CF massive MIMO systems. Focusing on the extraction of interesting insights, we consider small-cells (SCs) as a benchmark for comparison. Among the findings, CF massive MIMO systems achieve both higher coverage and rate with comparison to SCs due to the properties of favorable propagation, channel hardening, and interference suppression. Especially, we showed for both architectures that increasing the AP density results in a higher coverage which saturates after a certain value and increasing the number of users decreases the achievable rate but CF massive MIMO systems take advantage of the aforementioned properties, and thus, outperform SCs. In general, the performance gap between CF massive MIMO systems and SCs is enhanced by increasing the AP density. Another interesting observation concerns that a higher path-loss exponent decreases the rate while the users closer to the APs affect more the performance in terms of the rate.

As a worldwide pandemic, the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) has caused serious restrictions in people's social life, along with the loss of lives, the collapse of economies and the disruption of humanitarian aids. Despite the advance of technological developments, we, as researchers, have witnessed that several issues need further investigation for a better response to a pandemic outbreak. Therefore, researchers recently started develo** ideas to stop or at least reduce the spread of the pandemic. While there have been some prior works on wireless networks for combating a pandemic scenario, vehicular networks and their potential bottlenecks have not yet been fully examined. Furthermore, the vehicular scenarios can be identified as the locations, where the social distancing is mostly violated. With this motivation, this article provides an extensive discussion on vehicular networking for combating a pandemic. We provide the major applications of vehicular networking for combating COVID-19 in public transportation, in-vehicle diagnosis, border patrol and social distance monitoring. Next, we identify the unique characteristics of the collected data in terms of privacy, flexibility and coverage, then highlight corresponding future directions in privacy preservation, resource allocation, data caching and data routing. We believe that this work paves the way for the development of new products and algorithms that can facilitate the social life and help controlling the spread of the pandemic.

Motivated by the ever-growing demand for \emph{green} wireless communications and the advantages of \emph{cell-free} (CF) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, we focus on the design of their downlink for optimal \emph{energy efficiency} (EE). To address this fundamental topic, we assume that each access point (AP) is deployed with multiple antennas and serves multiple users on the same time-frequency resource while the APs are Poisson point process (PPP) distributed, which approaches realistically their opportunistic spatial randomness. Relied on tools from stochastic geometry, we derive a lower bound on the downlink average achievable spectral efficiency (SE). Next, we consider a realistic power consumption model for CF massive MIMO systems. These steps enable the formulation of a tractable optimization problem concerning the downlink EE per unit area, which results in the analytical determination of the optimal pilot reuse factor, the AP density, and the number of AP antennas and users that maximize the EE. Notably, the EE per unit area and not just the EE is the necessary metric to describe CF systems, where we meet multi-point transmission. Hence, we provide useful design guidelines for CF massive MIMO systems relating to fundamental system variables towards optimal EE. Among the results, we observe that a lower pilot reuse factor enables a decrease of the interference, and subsequently, higher EE up to a specific value. Overall, it is shown that the CF massive MIMO technology is a promising candidate for next-generation networks achieving simultaneously high SE and EE per unit area.

Motivated by heterogeneous networks (HetNets) design in improving coverage and by millimeter-wave (mmWave) transmission offering an abundance of extra spectrum, we present a general analytical framework shedding light to the downlink of realistic mmWave HetNets consisting of $K$ tiers of randomly located base stations (BSs). Specifically, we model, by virtue of stochastic geometry tools, the \textit{multi-tier} \textit{multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) mmWave} network degraded by the inevitable \textit{residual additive transceiver hardware impairments (RATHIs)} and \textit{channel aging}. Given this setting, we derive the coverage probability and the area spectral efficiency (ASE), and we subsequently evaluate the impact of residual transceiver hardware impairments (RTHIs) and channel aging on these metrics. Different path-loss laws for line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) are accounted for the analysis, which are among the distinguishing features of mmWave systems. Among the findings, we show that the RATHIs have a meaningful impact at the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime, while the transmit additive distortion degrades further than the receive distortion the system performance. Moreover, serving fewer users proves to be preferable, and the more directive the mmWaves are, the higher the ASE becomes.

Small-cell densification is a strategy enabling the offloading of users from macro base stations (MBSs), in order to alleviate their load and increase the coverage, especially, for cell-edge users. In parallel, as the network increases in density, the BS cooperation emerges as an efficient design method towards the demands for drastic improvement of the system performance against the detrimental overall interference. In addition, the tiers are enhanced with cell association policies by introducing the concept of the association probability. Above this and motivated by the advantages of cooperation among BSs, the small base stations (SBSs) are enriched with this property in their design. SBS cooperation allows shedding light into its impact on the cell selection rules in multi-antenna HetNets. Under these settings, software-defined networking (SDN) is introduced smoothly to play the leading role in the orchestration of the network. {In particular, heavy operations such as the coordination and the cell association are undertaken by virtue of an SDN controller performing and managing efficiently the corresponding computations due to its centralized adaptability and dynamicity towards the enhancement and potential scalability of the network}. In this context, we derive the coverage probability and the mean achievable rate. Not only we show the outperformance of BS cooperation over uncoordinated BSs, but we also demonstrate that the SBS cooperation enables the admittance of more users from the macro-cell BSs (MBSs). Moreover, we investigate the performance of different transmission techniques, and we identify the optimal bias in each case when SBSs cooperate. Finally, we depict that the SBS densification is beneficial until a specific density value since a further increase does not increase the coverage probability.
