Presenting analytical results for Binary Media-Based Modulation (B-MBM) over fading channels for single-antenna receivers. Illustrating that open-loop B-MBM, in the absence of feedback, only achieves a diversity order of one. However, with feedback and optimal weight selection in closed-loop configurations, a diversity order of two becomes achievable. Notably, the closed-loop B-MBM, with analytically computed optimal weights, performs equivalent to Alamouti-coded BPSK transmission, demonstrating feasibility even with just one radio frequency chain when feedback is available.

This paper introduces a novel physical-layer method labelled as Multi-Modal Concurrent Transmission (MMCT) for efficient transmission of multiple data streams with different reliability-latency performance requirements. The MMCT arranges data from multiple streams within a same physical-layer transport block wherein stream-specific modulation and coding scheme (MCS) selection is combined with joint map** of modulated codewords to Multiple-Input Multiple-Output spatial layers and frequency resources. Map** to spatial-frequency resources with higher Signal-to-Noise Ratios (SNRs) provides the required performance boost for the more demanding streams. In tactile internet applications, wherein haptic feedback/actuation and audio-video streams flow in parallel, the method provides significant SNR and spectral efficiency enhancements compared to conventional 3GPP New Radio (NR) transmission methods.

In this paper, we investigate the beamforming performances of holographic surfaces implemented as lossless antenna arrays with less than half-wavelength spacing. We first develop a method to quantify the mutual coupling effect among the antennas in an array. The developed coupling model is general and applicable to arrays with arbitrary distribution of any type of antennas with arbitrary structure, physical size and radiation power pattern. In particular, it reduces to a neat analytical expression for arbitrarily deployed isotropic antenna arrays. We then discuss the beamforming design for holographic surfaces, and in particular provide analytical beamforming characterizations for arrays with two arbitrarily spaced isotropic antennas. Numerical results indicate that, by accounting for the mutual coupling effect between antennas, the array densification by packing more antennas in a given surface aperture can significantly enhance both the beamforming gain and spatial resolution of the system. The beamforming gain enhancement and beamwidth reduction can be several dBs higher than, and more than half of, those achieved by the conventional half-wavelength spaced antenna arrays in the same surface aperture. The gains of densification become saturated when the antenna spacing is below a critical value, and the saturated gain reduces as the surface aperture increases.

Distributed resource allocation (RA) schemes have been introduced in cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) standard for vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) sidelink (SL) communications to share the limited spectrum (sub-6GHz) efficiently. However, the recent progress in connected and automated vehicles and mobility services requires a huge amount of available spectrum resources. Therefore, millimeter-wave and sub-THz frequencies are being considered as they offer a large free bandwidth. However, they require beamforming techniques to compensate for the higher path loss attenuation. The current fifth-generation (5G) RA standard for SL communication is inherited from the previous C-V2X standard, which is not suited for beam-based communication since it does not explore the spatial dimension. In this context, we propose a novel RA scheme that addresses the directional component by adding this third spatial dimension to the bandwidth part structure and promotes cooperation between vehicles in resource selection, namely cooperative three-dimensional RA. Numerical results show an average of 10% improvement in packet delivery ratio, an average 50% decrease in collision probability, and a 30% better channel busy ratio compared to the current standard, thus, confirming the validity of the proposed method.

Recent advances in Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technology and the upcoming sixth-generation (6G) network will dawn a new era for vehicular services with enhanced communication capabilities. Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) are expected to deliver a new transportation experience, increasing the safety and efficiency of road networks. The use of millimeter-wave (mmW) frequencies guarantees a huge amount of bandwidth (> 1GHz) and a high data rate (> 10Gbit/s), which are required for CAVs applications. However, high frequency is impaired by severe path loss, and line of sight (LoS) propagation can be easily blocked by static and dynamic obstacles. Several solutions are being investigated, and the most promising one exploits relays. However, traditional relay schemes react to link failure and leverage instantaneous information, which impedes efficient relay selection in highly mobile and complex networks, such as vehicular scenarios. In this context, we propose a novel proactive relaying strategy that exploits the cooperation between CAVs and environment information to predict the dynamic LoS-map, which describes the links' evolution in time. The proactive relaying schemes exploit the dynamic LoS-map to maximize the network connectivity. A novel framework integrating realistic mobility patterns and geometric channel propagation models is proposed to analyze the performance in different scenarios. Numerical simulations suggest that the proactive relaying schemes mitigate beam blockage and maximize the average probability of connecting CAVs with reliable links.

The ever-increasing demand for intelligent, automated, and connected mobility solutions pushes for the development of an innovative sixth Generation (6G) of cellular networks. A radical transformation on the physical layer of vehicular communications is planned, with a paradigm shift towards beam-based millimeter Waves or sub-Terahertz communications, which require precise beam pointing for guaranteeing the communication link, especially in high mobility. A key design aspect is a fast and proactive Initial Access (IA) algorithm to select the optimal beam to be used. In this work, we investigate alternative IA techniques to fasten the current fifth-generation (5G) standard, targeting an efficient 6G design. First, we discuss cooperative position-based schemes that rely on the position information. Then, motivated by the intuition of a non-uniform distribution of the communication directions due to road topology constraints, we design two Probabilistic Codebook (PCB) techniques of prioritized beams. In the first one, the PCBs are built leveraging past collected traffic information, while in the second one, we use the Hough Transform over the digital map to extract dominant road directions. We also show that the information coming from the angular probability distribution allows designing non-uniform codebook quantization, reducing the degradation of the performances compared to uniform one. Numerical simulation on realistic scenarios shows that PCBs-based beam selection outperforms the 5G standard in terms of the number of IA trials, with a performance comparable to position-based methods, without requiring the signaling of sensitive information.

Data traffic over wireless communication networks has experienced a tremendous growth in the last decade, and it is predicted to exponentially increase in the next decades. Enabling future wireless networks to fulfill this expectation is a challenging task both due to the scarcity of radio resources (e.g. spectrum and energy), and also the inherent characteristics of the wireless transmission medium. Wireless transmission is in general subject to two phenomena: fading and interference. The elegant interference alignment concept reveals that with proper transmission signalling design, different interference signals can in fact be aligned together, such that more radio resources can be assigned to the desired transmission. Although interference alignment can achieve a larger data rate compared to orthogonal transmission strategies, several challenges should be addressed to enable the deployment of this technique in future wireless networks For instance, to perform interference alignment, normally, global channel state information (CSI) is required to be perfectly known at all terminals. Clearly, acquiring such channel knowledge is a challenging problem in practice and proper channel training and channel state feedback techniques need to be deployed. In addition, since the channels are time-varying proper adaptive transmission is needed. This chapter review recent advances in practical aspects of interference alignment. It also presents recent test-bed implementations of signal processing algorithms for the realization of interference alignment.

We study a two-user state-dependent generalized multiple-access channel (GMAC) with correlated states. It is assumed that each encoder has \emph{noncausal} access to channel state information (CSI). We develop an achievable rate region by employing rate-splitting, block Markov encoding, Gelfand--Pinsker multicoding, superposition coding and joint typicality decoding. In the proposed scheme, the encoders use a partial decoding strategy to collaborate in the next block, and the receiver uses a backward decoding strategy with joint unique decoding at each stage. Our achievable rate region includes several previously known regions proposed in the literature for different scenarios of multiple-access and relay channels. Then, we consider two Gaussian GMACs with additive interference. In the first model, we assume that the interference is known noncausally at both of the encoders and construct a multi-layer Costa precoding scheme that removes \emph{completely} the effect of the interference. In the second model, we consider a doubly dirty Gaussian GMAC in which each of interferences is known noncausally only at one encoder. We derive an inner bound and analyze the achievable rate region for the latter model and interestingly prove that if one of the encoders knows the full CSI, there exists an achievable rate region which is \emph{independent} of the power of interference.
