Artificial neural networks are often used to identify features of crop plants. However, training their models requires many annotated images, which can be expensive and time-consuming to acquire. Procedural models of plants, such as those developed with Lindenmayer-systems (L-systems) can be created to produce visually realistic simulations, and hence images of plant simulations, where annotations are implicitly known. These synthetic images can either augment or completely replace real images in training neural networks for phenoty** tasks. In this paper, we systematically vary amounts of real and synthetic images used for training in both maize and canola to better understand situations where synthetic images generated from L-systems can help prediction on real images. This work also explores the degree to which realism in the synthetic images improves prediction. We have five different variants of a procedural canola model (these variants were created by tuning the realism while using calibration), and the deep learning results showed how drastically these results improve as the canola synthetic images are made to be more realistic. Furthermore, we see how neural network predictions can be used to help calibrate L-systems themselves, creating a feedback loop.

Abstract:
A generalized additive mixed model was estimated to investigate the factors that impact ridehailing driver trip request acceptance choices, relying on 200 responses from a stated preference survey in Seattle, US. Several policy recommendations were proposed to promote trip request acceptance based on ridehailing drivers willingness to accept compensation for undesired trip features. The findings c…

Several policy recommendations were proposed to promote trip request acceptance based on ridehailing drivers willingness to accept compensation for undesired trip features. The findings could be useful for transportation agencies to improve ridehailing service efficiency, better fulfill urban mobility needs, and reduce environmental burden.

Recently, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) based communications systems have attracted increasing research and commercial interest due to their cost effective deployment and ease of mobility.During natural disasters and emergencies, such networks are extremely useful to provide communication service. In such scenarios, UAVs position and trajectory must be optimal to maintain Quality of Service at the user end. This paper focuses on the deployment of an SDN-based UAV network providing communication service to the users. We consider the deployment of the system in stadiums and events. In this paper, we propose a scheme to allocate UAVs to the users and a traffic congestion algorithm to reduce the number of packets dropped to avoid re-transmissions from the user end. We also propose an energy efficient multi hop routing mechanism to avoid the high power requirement to transmit longer distances. We assume that all the back-haul links have sufficient capacities to carry all the traffic from the front-haul links and the design of UAVs must consider their power requirements for both flight and transmission.

WBAN comprised of tiny sensors, which collect information of patient's vital signs and provide a real time feedback. In addition, WBAN also supports many applications including Ubiquitous HealthCare (UHC), entertainment, gaming, military, etc. UHC is required by elderly people to facilitate them with instant monitoring anywhere they move around. In this paper, different standards used in WBAN were also discussed briefly. Path loss in WBAN and its impact on communication was presented with the help of simulations, which were performed for different models of In-Body communication and different factors (such as, attenuation, frequency, distance etc) influencing path loss in On-Body communications.

Extensive research is being carried out on various techniques in the hope of finding an efficient one which can be applied on dorsal hand vein pattern to improve its accuracy and matching time. One of the crucial step in biometric is the extraction of features. In this paper, we propose a method based on quadratic inference function to the dorsal hand vein features to extract its features. The biometric system developed was tested on a database of 100 images. The false acceptance rate (FAR), false rejection rate (FRR) and the matching time are being computed.
