There has been an exponential increase in the usage of multimedia services in mobile networks in recent years. To address this accelerating data demand, mobile networks are experiencing a subtle transformation in their architecture. One of the changes in this direction is the support of Multicast/Broadcast Service (MBS) in the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Fifth Generation (5G) network. The MBS has been introduced to enhance resource utilization and user experience in 3GPP 5G networks. However, there are certain limitations in the 3GPP 5G MBS architecture, such as the selection of the delivery method (unicast or broadcast) by the core network (may result in sub-optimal radio resource utilization) and no provision for converging non-3GPP broadcast technologies (like digital terrestrial television) with cellular (3GPP 5G) broadband. In this context, we propose a new architecture for the convergence of cellular broadband and non-3GPP broadcast networks. A novelty of the architecture is that it treats signalling exchange with User Equipment (UE) as data (service) which results in improved scalability of mobile networks. The architecture supports enhanced flexibility in choosing a delivery method (3GPP 5G unicast, 3GPP 5G broadcast, or non-3GPP broadcast) for user data. We evaluate the performance of the proposed architecture using process algebra-based simulations, demonstrating a significant reduction in the number of signalling messages exchanged between the UE and the network for MBS session establishment as compared to the 3GPP 5G network.

To accommodate various use cases with differing characteristics, the Fifth Generation (5G) mobile communications system intends to utilize network slicing. Network slicing enables the creation of multiple logical networks over a shared physical network infrastructure. While the problems such as resource allocation for multiple slices in mobile networks have been explored in considerable detail in the existing literature, the suitability of the existing mobile network architecture to support network slicing has not been analysed adequately. We think the existing 5G System (5GS) architecture suffers from certain limitations, such as a lack of slice isolation in its control plane. This work focuses on the future evolution of the existing 5GS architecture from a slicing perspective, especially that of its control plane, addressing some of the limitations of the existing 5GS architecture. We propose a new network architecture which enables efficient slicing in beyond 5G networks. The proposed architecture results in enhanced modularity and scalability of the control plane in sliced mobile networks. In addition, it also brings slice isolation to the control plane, which is not feasible in the existing 5G system. We also present a performance evaluation that confirms the improved performance and scalability of the proposed system viz a viz the existing 5G system.

The upcoming Sixth Generation (6G) mobile communications system envisions supporting a variety of use cases with differing characteristics, e.g., very low to extremely high data rates, diverse latency needs, ultra massive connectivity, sustainable communications, ultra-wide coverage etc. To accommodate these diverse use cases, the 6G system architecture needs to be scalable, modular, and flexible; both in its user plane and the control plane. In this paper, we identify some limitations of the existing Fifth Generation System (5GS) architecture, especially that of its control plane. Further, we propose a novel architecture for the 6G System (6GS) employing Software Defined Networking (SDN) technology to address these limitations of the control plane. The control plane in existing 5GS supports two different categories of functionalities handling end user signalling (e.g., user registration, authentication) and control of user plane functions. We propose to move the end-user signalling functionality out of the mobile network control plane and treat it as user service, i.e., as payload or data. This proposal results in an evolved service-driven architecture for mobile networks bringing increased simplicity, modularity, scalability, flexibility and security to its control plane. The proposed architecture can also support service specific signalling support, if needed, making it better suited for diverse 6GS use cases. To demonstrate the advantages of the proposed architecture, we also compare its performance with the 5GS using a process algebra-based simulation tool.

In video streaming applications especially during live streaming events (such as the Super Bowl), video traffic can account for a significant portion of network traffic and can lead to severe network congestion. During such events, multicast transmission can be used to avoid network congestion since the same video content is being streamed to multiple users simultaneously. However, providing seamless connectivity to cellular users in multicast streaming remains an open problem. To address this issue, this paper explores the potential of using multi-connectivity (MC) in wireless multicast streaming. Our results reveal that MC significantly improves the performance of multicast services, especially for cell edge users who often suffer from poor channel conditions. We prove that optimal resource allocation in MC multicast streaming is an NP-hard problem. Therefore, we propose a greedy approximation algorithm for this problem with an approximation factor of $(1-1/e)$. We also prove that no other polynomial-time algorithm can provide a better approximation.

The Queen's Domination problem, studied for over 160 years, poses the following question: What is the least number of queens that can be arranged on a $m \times n$ chessboard so that they either attack or occupy every cell?
We propose a novel relaxation of the Queen's Domination problem and show that it is exactly solvable on both square and rectangular chessboards. As a consequence, we improve on the best known lower bound for rectangular chessboards in $\approx 12.5\%$ of the non-trivial cases. As another consequence, we simplify and generalize the proofs for the best known lower-bounds for Queen's Domination of square $n \times n$ chessboards for $n \equiv \{0,1,2\} \mod 4$ using an elegant idea based on a convex hull.
Finally, we show some results and make some conjectures towards the goal of simplifying the long complicated proof for the best known lower-bound for square boards when $n \equiv 3 \mod 4$ (and $n > 11$). These simple-to-state conjectures may also be of independent interest.

Multi-connectivity has emerged as a key enabler for providing seamless connectivity in cellular mobile networks. However, its potential for improving the quality of multicast transmissions has remained unexplored. In this paper, we investigate the use of multi-connectivity in wireless multicast streaming. Multi-connectivity can significantly improve the performance of multicast services. It especially benefits the cell edge users who often suffer from poor channel conditions. In this work, we assess the impact of multi-connectivity on the performance of multicast streaming. We propose procedures for establishing multi-connectivity in a multicast system and address the associated resource allocation problem. We prove that the optimal resource allocation problem is NP-hard. We propose a greedy approximation algorithm for this problem and prove that no other polynomial-time algorithm can provide a better approximation. Since video streaming is the primary use case under consideration here, we use traces from actual videos to generate realistic video traffic patterns in our simulations. Our simulation results clearly establish that multi-connectivity results in considerable performance improvement in multicast streaming.

Besides, IAB can utilize the same spectrum for access and backhaul purposes. The 3GPP standardized IAB in Release 16 and would incorporate a few enhancements in the upcoming releases. The 3GPP IAB architecture, however, suffers from some limitations, such as it does not support mobile relays or dual-connectivity. This article presents a novel IAB architecture that addresses these limitations and is transparent to legacy operations of the 5G system. The architecture also supports multi-RAT coexistence where access and backhaul may belong to different RATs. These factors (and many others) enable operators to capitalize on the architecture for deploying IAB anywhere in a plug-and-play manner. We also show the merits of the architecture by evaluating its capacity and mobility robustness compared to the 3GPP architecture. Simulation results corroborate our design approach. Owing its robust design, the architecture can contend for standardization in B5G system.

Optimal decision making requires that classifiers produce uncertainty estimates consistent with their empirical accuracy. However, deep neural networks are often under- or over-confident in their predictions. Consequently, methods have been developed to improve the calibration of their predictive uncertainty both during training and post-hoc. In this work, we propose differentiable losses to improve calibration based on a soft (continuous) version of the binning operation underlying popular calibration-error estimators. When incorporated into training, these soft calibration losses achieve state-of-the-art single-model ECE across multiple datasets with less than 1% decrease in accuracy. For instance, we observe an 82% reduction in ECE (70% relative to the post-hoc rescaled ECE) in exchange for a 0.7% relative decrease in accuracy relative to the cross entropy baseline on CIFAR-100. When incorporated post-training, the soft-binning-based calibration error objective improves upon temperature scaling, a popular recalibration method. Overall, experiments across losses and datasets demonstrate that using calibration-sensitive procedures yield better uncertainty estimates under dataset shift than the standard practice of using a cross entropy loss and post-hoc recalibration methods.

Convergence of multiple access technologies is one of the key enablers in providing a diverse set of services to the Fifth Generation (5G) users. Though the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) 5G standard defines a common core supporting multiple Radio Access Technologies (RATs), Radio Access Network (RAN) level decisions are taken separately across individual RATs as the existing 5G architecture lacks a unified control and management framework for a multi-RAT network. A unified access network is likely to utilize RAN resources more efficiently and provide an improved performance. To bridge these gaps, we present an OpenFlow based RAN architecture comprising multiple RATs. We refer to it as \textit{5G-Flow}. With minimal changes in the 3GPP 5G RAN and none in the core network, we are able to realize a unified and integrated multi-access 5G-Flow RAN. We simplify the existing 3GPP 5G RAN by replacing RAN nodes with OpenFlow switches and a Software-Defined Networking (SDN) controller. Moreover, a UE in the 5G-Flow network can use 5G RAN to connect to any core network (4G or 5G) or directly connect to Internet without going via the core network. We also present a simple method to realize 5G non-standalone architecture using 5G-Flow RAN. We have developed an evaluation platform to compare the performance of our architecture with the standard 3GPP 5G network. Results demonstrate significant gains in the network performance of 5G-Flow RAN architecture over the existing 3GPP 5G network.

Mobile Networks today comprise of multiple Radio Access Technologies (RATs), e.g., 4G LTE, Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), and the upcoming 5G-New Radio (5G-NR). The access networks of these RATs are controlled by RAT-specific entities, e.g., the resource management function located inside an individual LTE eNB is used for the eNB control, or access controllers are used for controlling WLAN Access Points. Even in the 3GPP's 5G architecture, which has a common Core supporting multiple RATs, radio access related decisions are taken independently within individual RATs. Due to the fragmented nature of control-plane in multi-RAT Radio Access Network (RAN), a unified global view of network resources is unavailable, hindering optimized allocation of resources. It also brings complexity to the features involving multiple RATs, e.g., dual connectivity. To address these issues, we introduced an SDN-based Multi-RAT RAN architecture (SMRAN) in our earlier work [arXiv:1812.11825], where the RAN control-plane is segregated from the data-plane. As part of the SMRAN architecture, we defined a logically centralized multi-RAT RAN Controller and individual RAT-specific data-plane functions. In the current work, we define a protocol, called Open5G, to be used for control and management of the SMRAN data-plane. Open5G is based on OpenFlow (OF) and OF-Config, which are commonly used protocols in the SDN-based wired networks and data centers.

Proportional Fair (PF) is a scheduling technique to maintain a balance between maximizing throughput and ensuring fairness to users. Dual Connectivity (DC) technique was introduced by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) to improve the mobility robustness and system capacity in heterogeneous networks. In this paper, we demonstrate the utility of DC in improving proportional fairness in the system. We propose a low complexity centralized PF scheduling scheme for DC and show that it outperforms the standard PF scheduling scheme. Since the problem of dual association of users for maximizing proportional fairness in the system is NP-hard, we propose three heuristic user association schemes for DC. We demonstrate that DC, along with the proposed PF scheme, gives remarkable gains on PF utility over single connectivity and performs almost close to the optimal PF scheme in heterogeneous networks.

To address the exponentially increasing data rate demands of end users, necessitates efficient spectrum allocation among co-existing operators in licensed and unlicensed spectrum bands to cater to the temporal and spatial variations of traffic in the wireless network. In this paper, we address the spectrum allocation problem among non-cooperative operators via auctions. The classical Vickrey-Clarke-Groves (VCG) approach provides the framework for a strategy-proof and social welfare maximizing auction at high computational complexity, which makes it infeasible for practical implementation. We propose sealed bid auction mechanisms for spectrum allocation which are computationally tractable and hence applicable for allocating spectrum by performing auctions in short durations as per the dynamic load variations of the network. We establish that the proposed algorithm is strategy-proof for uniform demand. Furthermore, for non-uniform demand we propose an algorithm that satisfies weak strategy-proofness. We also consider non-linear increase in the marginal valuations with demand. Simulation results are presented to exhibit the performance comparison of the proposed algorithms with VCG and other existing mechanisms.

Bandwidth hungry video content has become the dominant contributor to the data traffic world over. Cellular networks are constantly evolving to meet the growing traffic demands. Over the past few years, wireless multicast has been garnering a lot of attention as a means of efficient resource utilization. Multicast transmission lets spectral resources to be shared between users streaming the same content. Even though multicast transmission allows to serve multiple users on the same resources, in order to serve all these users successfully, the base station cannot transmit the content at a rate greater than that decodable by the user with the worst channel conditions. In this paper, we propose a way to overcome this bottleneck. Video streaming services can sustain a certain amount of packet loss without any significant degradation in the quality experienced by the users. We leverage this loss tolerant nature of video streaming applications to improve the performance of multicast video services in LTE and 5G. We convert the problem of resource allocation for loss tolerant multicasting into the problem of stabilizing a queueing system. We then propose two throughput optimal Maximum Weight (MW) policies that successfully stabilize the constructed queueing system. However, brute force implementation of MW policies is mostly NP-hard. To overcome this, we propose a maximum weight bipartite matching approach that results in a polynomial time implementation of the proposed policies. We also evaluate the performance of our policies via extensive simulations.

To arrive at the Frugal 5G Network architecture, we take into consideration the rural connectivity needs and the characteristics specific to rural areas. As part of the proposed Frugal 5G Network, we define a heterogeneous Access Network wherein macro cells provide a carpet coverage while Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) provide additional capacity to serve the village clusters. WLAN is backhauled via a wireless network also called the wireless middle mile network. We define a Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) based architecture to make the network flexible and scalable. The concepts of Fog computing have also been employed in the network architecture to bring intelligence to the edge, i.e., to the access network. Through a novel amalgamation of these technologies, we are able to address the connectivity requirements of rural areas. Device-to-device (D2D) communications is expected to play a significant role in increasing the system capacity of the fifth generation (5G) wireless networks. To accomplish this, efficient power and resource allocation algorithms need to be devised for the D2D users. Since the D2D users are treated as secondary users, their interference to the cellular users (CUs) should not hamper the CU communications. Most of the prior works on D2D resource allocation assume full channel state information (CSI) at the base station (BS). However, the required channel gains for the D2D pairs may not be known. To acquire these in a fast fading channel requires extra power and control overhead. In this paper, we assume partial CSI and formulate the D2D power and resource allocation problem as a multi-armed bandit problem. We propose a power allocation scheme for the D2D users in which the BS allocates power to the D2D users if a certain signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) is maintained for the CUs. In a single player environment a D2D user selects a CU in every time slot by employing UCB1 algorithm. Since this resource allocation problem can also be considered as an adversarial bandit problem we have applied the exponential-weight algorithm for exploration and exploitation (Exp3) to solve it. In a multiple player environment, we extend UCB1 and Exp3 to multiple D2D users. We also propose two algorithms that are based on distributed learning algorithm with fairness (DLF) and kth-UCB1 algorithms in which the D2D users are ranked. Our simulation results show that our proposed algorithms are fair and achieve good performance.

It provides a significant improvement in convergence speed and computational and storage complexity over traditional RL algorithms. The proposed technique can be applied to a wide variety of optimization problems that include energy efficient data transmission and management of queues. We exhibit the improvement in convergence speed of the proposed algorithm over other RL algorithms through simulations.

We consider allocation of a resource to multiple interested users with a constraint that if the resource is allocated to user $i$ then it can not be allocated simultaneously to a predefined set of users $\cS_i$ . This scenario arises in many practical systems that include wireless networks and constrained queuing systems. It is known that socially optimal strategy-proof mechanism is not only NP-hard, but it is also hard to approximate. This renders optimal policy hard to use in practice. Here, we propose a computationally efficient mechanism and prove it to be strategy proof. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we show that the social utility of the proposed scheme is close to that of the optimal. Further, we demonstrate how the proposed mechanism can be used for fair and efficient short-term spectrum allocation in resource constrained large wireless networks.

Motivated by increasing popularity of delay sensitive applications, we investigate the queue stability in device-to-device (D2D) relay-assisted cellular networks. In contrast to prior works on D2D relay-assisted cellular networks, we incorporate practical properties of these networks such as bursty packet arrivals, user mobility and relays generating their own traffic. Assuming network topology evolving in IID fashion, we first evaluate the system stability region to quantify its delay performance. Subsequently, we formulate a policy for joint resource allocation and power control under a more realistic mobility scenario of generalized reflected random walk. Also, the throughput optimality of this policy is investigated. Simulation results are provided to give better understanding of queue stability in the network.

With the increasing popularity of video streaming applications like YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, popular video content is often required to be delivered to a large number of users simultaneously. Multicast transmission can be used for catering to such applications efficiently. The common content can be transmitted to the users on the same resources resulting in considerable resource conservation. This paper proposes various schemes for efficient grou** and resource allocation for multicast transmission in LTE. The optimal grou** and resource allocation problems are shown to be NP-hard and so, we propose heuristic algorithms for both these problems. We also formulate a Simulated Annealing based algorithm to approximate the optimal resource allocation for our problem. The LP-relaxation based resource allocation proposed by us results in allocations very close to the estimated optimal.

Recently, there has been significant interest in the integration and co-existence of Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Long Term Evolution (LTE) with other Radio Access Technologies, like IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). Although, the inter-working of IEEE 802.11 WLANs with 3GPP LTE has indicated enhanced network performance in the context of capacity and load balancing, the WLAN discovery scheme implemented in most of the commercially available smartphones is very inefficient and results in high battery drainage. In this paper, we have proposed an energy efficient WLAN discovery scheme for 3GPP LTE and IEEE 802.11 WLAN inter-working scenario. User Equipment (UE), in the proposed scheme, uses 3GPP network assistance along with the results of past channel scans, to optimally select the next channels to scan. Further, we have also developed an algorithm to accurately estimate the UE's mobility state, using 3GPP network signal strength patterns. We have implemented various discovery schemes in Android framework, to evaluate the performance of our proposed scheme against other solutions in the literature. Since, Android does not support selective scanning mode, we have implemented modules in Android to enable selective scanning. Further, we have also used simulation studies and justified the results using power consumption modeling. The results from the field experiments and simulations have shown high power savings using the proposed scanning scheme without any discovery performance deterioration.

Dual Connectivity (DC) is a technique proposed to address the problem of increased handovers in heterogeneous networks. In DC, a foreground User Equipment (UE) with multiple transceivers has a possibility to connect to a Macro eNodeB (MeNB) and a Small cell eNodeB (SeNB) simultaneously. In downlink split bearer architecture of DC, a data radio bearer at MeNB gets divided into two; one part is forwarded to the SeNB through a non-ideal backhaul link to the UE, and the other part is forwarded by the MeNB. This may lead to an increase in the total delay at the UE since different packets corresponding to a single transmission may incur varying amounts of delays in the two different paths. Since the resources in the MeNB are shared by background legacy users and foreground users, DC may increase the blocking probability of background users. Moreover, single connectivity to the small cell may increase the blocking probability of foreground users. Therefore, we target to minimize the average delay of the system subject to a constraint on the blocking probability of background and foreground users. The optimal policy is computed and observed to contain a threshold structure. The variation of average system delay is studied for changes in different system parameters.

A significant barrier in providing affordable rural broadband is to connect the rural and remote places to the optical Point of Presence (PoP) over distances of few kilometers. A lot of work has been done in the area of long distance Wi-Fi networks. However, these networks require tall towers and high gain (directional) antennas. Also, they work in the unlicensed band which has Effective Isotropically Radiated Power (EIRP) limit (e.g. 1 W in India) which restricts the network design. In this work, we propose a Long Term Evolution-Advanced (LTE-A) network operating in TV UHF to connect the remote areas to the optical PoP. In India, around 100 MHz of TV UHF band IV (470-585 MHz) is unused at any location and can be put to an effective use in these areas. We explore the idea of multi-hop topology for the proposed network. We also compare the performance of the multi-hop network with the Point to Multipoint (PMP) topology. The results show that multi-hop network performs much better than the PMP network. We then formulate a Linear Programming (LP) problem of generating optimal topology and compare its performance with the multi-hop network. Overall, the analysis implies that an optimally planned LTE-A network in TV UHF band can be a potential solution for affordable rural broadband.

To cope up with the unprecedented growth of data traffic, mobile data can be offloaded to Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) in a Long Term Evolution (LTE) based HetNet. In this paper, an optimal RAT selection problem is considered to maximize the total system throughput in an LTE-WiFi system with offload capability. Another formulation is also developed where maximizing the total system throughput is subject to a constraint on the voice user blocking probability. It is proved that the optimal policies for the association and offloading of voice/data users contain threshold structures. Based on the threshold structures, we propose algorithms for the association and offloading of users in LTE-WiFi HetNet. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the voice user blocking probability and the total system throughput performance of the proposed algorithms in comparison to another benchmark algorithm.

In this paper, we propose Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)-aware cross layer scheduling algorithms in a multipoint-to-point network such as the uplink of an IEEE 802.16 (WiMAX) network. Inadequate bandwidth allocation to a TCP flow may lead to timeout and since TCP source drops its congestion window ($cwnd$) immediately after a timeout, it may affect the average throughput adversely. On the other hand, since the TCP source increases its $cwnd$ only linearly upon the availability of bandwidth, any excess assignment of bandwidth may remain underutilized. The proposed scheduling algorithms address this by allocating the resources based on $cwnd$ and TCP timeout. Moreover, since we focus on uplink scheduling, we consider that only {\em flow} level resource requirement is communicated to the Base Station ($BS$) instead of per {\em packet} information. The schedulers also take into account the wireless channel characteristics and are thus cross layer in nature. Through exhaustive simulations, we demonstrate that the proposed schedulers exhibit enhanced throughput and fairness properties when compared to that of Round Robin (RR) scheduler under different shadowing. We demonstrate a gain between 3.5 \% to 15 \% in throughput and 15 \% to 25 \% in channel utilization over RR scheduler under different shadowing.

One of the major impediments to providing broadband connectivity in semi-urban and rural India is the lack of robust and affordable backhaul. Fiber connectivity in terms of backhaul that is being planned (or provided) by the Government of India would reach only till rural offices (named Gram Panchayat) in the Indian rural areas. In this exposition, we articulate how TV white space can address the challenge in providing broadband connectivity to a billion plus population within India. The villages can form local Wi-Fi clusters. The problem of connecting the Wi-Fi clusters to the optical fiber points can be addressed using a TV white space based backhaul (middle-mile) network.
The amount of TV white space present in India is very large when compared with the developed world. Therefore, we discuss a backhaul architecture for rural India, which utilizes TV white spaces. We also showcase results from our TV white space testbed, which support the effectiveness of backhaul by using TV white spaces. Our testbed provides a broadband access network to rural population in thirteen villages. The testbed is deployed over an area of $25$km$^2$, and extends seamless broadband connectivity from optical fiber locations or Internet gateways to remote (difficult to connect) rural regions. We also discuss standards and TV white space regulations, which are pertinent to the backhaul architecture mentioned above.

Ultra high frequency (UHF) TV band spectrum has very good wireless radio propagation characteristics. The amount of TV white space in the UHF TV band in India is of interest. Comprehensive quantitative assessment and estimates for the TV white space in the 470-590MHz band for four zones of India (all except north) are presented in this work. This is the first effort in India to estimate TV white spaces in a comprehensive manner. The average available TV white space per unit area in these four zones is calculated using two methods: (i) the primary (licensed) user and secondary (unlicensed) user point of view; and, (ii) the regulations of Federal Communications Commission in the United States. By both methods, the average available TV white space in the UHF TV band is shown to be more than 100MHz! A TV transmitter frequency-reassignment algorithm is also described. Based on spatial-reuse ideas, a TV channel allocation scheme is presented which results in insignicant interference to the TV receivers while using the least number of TV channels for transmission across the four zones. Based on this reassignment, it is found that four TV band channels (or 32MHz) are sufficient to provide the existing UHF TV band coverage in India.

Relay deployment in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) based cellular networks helps in coverage extension and or capacity improvement. In OFDMA system, each user requires different number of subcarriers to meet its rate requirement. This resource requirement depends on the Signal to Interference Ratio (SIR) experienced by a user. Traditional methods to compute blocking probability cannot be used in relay based cellular OFDMA networks. In this paper, we present an approach to compute the blocking probability of such networks. We determine an expression of the probability distribution of the users resource requirement based on its experienced SIR and then classify the users into various classes depending upon their subcarrier requirement. We consider the system to be a multidimensional system with different classes and evaluate the blocking probability of system using the multi-dimensional Erlang loss formulas.

There is paucity of work available in literature on ICI coordination (ICIC) for relay-assisted cellular networks (RACN). In this paper, we do a survey on the ICIC schemes in cellular networks and RACN. We then propose a self-organized resource allocation plan for RACN to improve the edge user's performance by ICIC. We compare the performance of reuse-1, reuse-3, soft frequency reuse (SFR) scheme, proposed plan with and without relays. The performance metrics for comparison are edge user's spectral efficiency, their signal-to-interference-and-noise ratio (SINR) and system's area spectral efficiency. We show by the simulation results that our proposed plan performs better than the existing resource allocation schemes in static allocation scenario. Next, we propose to make our resource allocation plan dynamic and self-organized. The distinct features of our proposed plan are: One, it achieves a trade-off between the system's area spectral efficiency and the edge user's spectral efficiency performance. Secondly, it introduces a novel concept of interfering neighbor set to achieve ICIC by local interaction between the entities.

In this paper, we consider the problem of energy efficient uplink scheduling with delay constraint for a multi-user wireless system. We address this problem within the framework of constrained Markov decision processes (CMDPs) wherein one seeks to minimize one cost (average power) subject to a hard constraint on another (average delay). We do not assume the arrival and channel statistics to be known. To handle state space explosion and informational constraints, we split the problem into individual CMDPs for the users, coupled through their Lagrange multipliers; and a user selection problem at the base station. To address the issue of unknown channel and arrival statistics, we propose a reinforcement learning algorithm. The users use this learning algorithm to determine the rate at which they wish to transmit in a slot and communicate this to the base station. The base station then schedules the user with the highest rate in a slot. We analyze convergence, stability and optimality properties of the algorithm. We also demonstrate the efficacy of the algorithm through simulations within IEEE 802.16 system.

We assume that the base station does not coordinate the transmissions of the users and hence the users employ random access communication. The situation is modeled as a non-cooperative repeated game with incomplete information. Each user attempts to minimize its long term power consumption subject to a minimum rate requirement. We propose a two timescale stochastic gradient algorithm (TTSGA) for tuning the users' transmission probabilities. The algorithm includes a 'waterfilling threshold update mechanism' that ensures that the rate constraints are satisfied. We prove that under the algorithm, the users' transmission probabilities converge to a Nash equilibrium. Moreover, we also prove that the rate constraints are satisfied; this is also demonstrated using simulation studies.

In this paper, we consider the problem of power efficient uplink scheduling in a Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) system over a fading wireless channel. The objective is to minimize the power expenditure of each user subject to satisfying individual user delay. We make the practical assumption that the system statistics are unknown, i.e., the probability distributions of the user arrivals and channel states are unknown. The problem has the structure of a Constrained Markov Decision Problem (CMDP). Determining an optimal policy under for the CMDP faces the problems of state space explosion and unknown system statistics. To tackle the problem of state space explosion, we suggest determining the transmission rate of a particular user in each slot based on its channel condition and buffer occupancy only. The rate allocation algorithm for a particular user is a learning algorithm that learns about the buffer occupancy and channel states of that user during system execution and thus addresses the issue of unknown system statistics. Once the rate of each user is determined, the proposed algorithm schedules the user with the best rate. Our simulations within an IEEE 802.16 system demonstrate that the algorithm is indeed able to satisfy the user specified delay constraints. We compare the performance of our algorithm with the well known M-LWDF algorithm. Moreover, we demonstrate that the power expended by the users under our algorithm is quite low.

We derive the maximum entropy of a flow (information utility) which conforms to traffic constraints imposed by a generalized token bucket regulator, by taking into account the covert information present in the randomness of packet lengths. Under equality constraints of aggregate tokens and aggregate bucket depth, a generalized token bucket regulator can achieve higher information utility than a standard token bucket regulator. The optimal generalized token bucket regulator has a near-uniform bucket depth sequence and a decreasing token increment sequence.
