This paper addresses the problem of maximizing the capacity of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) link assisted by a beyond-diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surface (BD-RIS). We maximize the capacity by alternately optimizing the transmit covariance matrix, and the BD-RIS scattering matrix, which, according to network theory, should be unitary and symmetric. These constraints make the optimization of BD-RIS more challenging than that of diagonal RIS. To find a stationary point of the capacity we maximize a sequence of quadratic problems in the manifold of unitary matrices. This leads to an efficient algorithm that always improves the capacity obtained by a diagonal RIS. Through simulation examples, we study the capacity improvement provided by a passive BD-RIS architecture over the conventional RIS model in which the phase shift matrix is diagonal.

Efficient and dynamic path planning has become an important topic for urban areas with larger density of connected vehicles (CV) which results in reduction of travel time and directly contributes to environmental sustainability through reducing energy consumption. CVs exploit the cellular wireless vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) communication technology to disseminate the vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) messages to the Base-station (BS) to improve situation awareness on urban roads. In this paper, we investigate radio resource management (RRM) in such a framework to minimize the age of information (AoI) so as to enhance path planning results. We use the fact that V2I messages with lower AoI value result in less error in estimating the road capacity and more accurate path planning. Through simulations, we compare road travel times and volume over capacity (V/C) against different levels of AoI and demonstrate the promising performance of the proposed framework.

Multiple access techniques are cornerstones of wireless communications. Their performance depends on the channel properties, which can be improved by reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). In this work, we jointly optimize MA precoding at the base station (BS) and RIS configuration. We tackle difficulties of mutual coupling between RIS elements, scalability to more than 1000 RIS elements, and channel estimation. We first derive an RIS-assisted channel model considering mutual coupling, then propose an unsupervised machine learning (ML) approach to optimize the RIS. In particular, we design a dedicated neural network (NN) architecture RISnet with good scalability and desired symmetry. Moreover, we combine ML-enabled RIS configuration and analytical precoding at BS since there exist analytical precoding schemes. Furthermore, we propose another variant of RISnet, which requires the channel state information (CSI) of a small portion of RIS elements (in this work, 16 out of 1296 elements) if the channel comprises a few specular propagation paths. More generally, this work is an early contribution to combine ML technique and domain knowledge in communication for NN architecture design. Compared to generic ML, the problem-specific ML can achieve higher performance, lower complexity and symmetry.

Optical wireless communication (OWC) systems with multiple light-emitting diodes (LEDs) have recently been explored to support energy-limited devices via simultaneous lightwave information and power transfer (SLIPT). The energy consumption, however, becomes considerable by increasing the number of incorporated LEDs. This paper proposes a joint dimming (JD) scheme that lowers the consumed power of a SLIPT-enabled OWC system by controlling the number of active LEDs. We further enhance the data rate of this system by utilizing rate splitting multiple access (RSMA). More specifically, we formulate a data rate maximization problem to optimize the beamforming design, LED selection and RSMA rate adaptation that guarantees the power budget of the OWC transmitter, as well as the quality-of-service (QoS) and an energy harvesting level for users. We propose a dynamic resource allocation solution based on proximal policy optimization (PPO) reinforcement learning. In simulations, the optimal dimming level is determined to initiate a trade-off between the data rate and power consumption. It is also verified that RSMA significantly improves the data rate.

Modern wireless communication systems are expected to provide improved latency and reliability. To meet these expectations, a short packet length is needed, which makes the first-order Shannon rate an inaccurate performance metric for such communication systems. A more accurate approximation of the achievable rates of finite-block-length (FBL) coding regimes is known as the normal approximation (NA). It is therefore of substantial interest to study the optimization of the FBL rate in multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems, in which each user may transmit and/or receive multiple data streams. Hence, we formulate a general optimization problem for improving the spectral and energy efficiency of multi-user MIMO-aided ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) systems, which are assisted by reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). We show that a RIS is capable of substantially improving the performance of multi-user MIMO-aided URLLC systems. Moreover, the benefits of RIS increase as the packet length and/or the tolerable bit error rate are reduced. This reveals that RISs can be even more beneficial in URLLC systems for improving the FBL rates than in conventional systems approaching Shannon rates.

This work considers an asynchronous $\textsf{K}_\text{a}$-active-user unsourced multiple access channel (AUMAC) with the worst-case asynchronicity. The transmitted messages must be decoded within $n$ channel uses, while some codewords are not completely received due to asynchronicities. We consider a constraint of the largest allowed delay of the transmission. The AUMAC lacks the permutation-invariant property of the synchronous UMAC since different permutations of the same codewords with a fixed asynchronicity are distinguishable. Hence, the analyses require calculating all $2^{\textsf{K}_\text{a}}-1$ combinations of erroneously decoded messages. Moreover, transmitters cannot adapt the corresponding codebooks according to asynchronicity due to a lack of information on asynchronicities. To overcome this challenge, a uniform bound of the per-user probability of error (PUPE) is derived by investigating the worst-case of the asynchronous patterns with the delay constraint. Numerical results show the trade-off between the energy-per-bit and the number of active users for different delay constraints. In addition, although the asynchronous transmission reduces interference, the required energy-per-bit increases as the receiver decodes with incompletely received codewords, compared to the synchronous case.

Mathematical optimization is now widely regarded as an indispensable modeling and solution tool for the design of wireless communications systems. While optimization has played a significant role in the revolutionary progress in wireless communication and networking technologies from 1G to 5G and onto the future 6G, the innovations in wireless technologies have also substantially transformed the nature of the underlying mathematical optimization problems upon which the system designs are based and have sparked significant innovations in the development of methodologies to understand, to analyze, and to solve those problems. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey of recent advances in mathematical optimization theory and algorithms for wireless communication system design. We begin by illustrating common features of mathematical optimization problems arising in wireless communication system design. We discuss various scenarios and use cases and their associated mathematical structures from an optimization perspective. We then provide an overview of recently developed optimization techniques in areas ranging from nonconvex optimization, global optimization, and integer programming, to distributed optimization and learning-based optimization. The key to successful solution of mathematical optimization problems is in carefully choosing or develo** suitable algorithms (or neural network architectures) that can exploit the underlying problem structure. We conclude the paper by identifying several open research challenges and outlining future research directions.

An emerging technology to enhance the spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) of wireless communication systems is reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), which is shown to be very powerful in single-carrier systems. However, in multi-user orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, RIS may not be as promising as in single-carrier systems since an independent optimization of RIS elements at each sub-carrier is impossible in multi-carrier systems. Thus, this paper investigates the performance of various RIS technologies like regular (reflective and passive), simultaneously transmit and reflect (STAR), and multi-sector beyond diagonal (BD) RIS in multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) OFDM broadcast channels (BC). This requires to formulate and solve a joint MIMO precoding and RIS optimization problem. The obtained solution reveals that RIS can significantly improve the system performance even when the number of RIS elements is relatively low. Moreover, we develop resource allocation schemes for STAR-RIS and multi-sector BD-RIS in MIMO OFDM BCs, and show that these RIS technologies can outperform a regular RIS, especially when the regular RIS cannot assist the communications for all the users.

Simultaneously transmitting and reflecting reconfigurable intelligent surface (STAR-RIS) is a novel technology which enables the full-space coverage. In this letter, a multi STAR-RIS-aided system using non-orthogonal multiple access in an uplink transmission is considered, where the multi-order reflections among multiple STAR-RISs assist the transmission from the single-antenna users to the multi-antenna base station. Specifically, the total sum rate maximization problem is solved by jointly optimizing the active beamforming, power allocation, transmission and reflection beamforming at the STAR-RIS, and user-STAR-RIS assignment. To solve the non-convex optimization problem, a novel deep reinforcement learning algorithm is proposed which integrates meta-learning and deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG), denoted by Meta-DDPG. Numerical results demonstrate that our proposed Meta-DDPG algorithm outperforms the conventional DDPG algorithm with $53\%$ improvement, while multi-order reflections among multi STAR-RISs yields to $14.1\%$ enhancement in the total data rate.

This article introduces a new approach to address the spectrum scarcity challenge in 6G networks by implementing the enhanced licensed shared access (ELSA) framework. Our proposed auction mechanism aims to ensure fairness in spectrum allocation to mobile network operators (MNOs) through a novel weighted auction called the fair Vickery-Clarke-Groves (FVCG) mechanism. Through comparison with traditional methods, the study demonstrates that the proposed auction method improves fairness significantly. We suggest using spectrum sensing and integrating UAV-based networks to enhance efficiency of the LSA system. This research employs two methods to solve the problem. We first propose a novel greedy algorithm, named market share based weighted greedy algorithm (MSWGA) to achieve better fairness compared to the traditional auction methods and as the second approach, we exploit deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithms, to optimize the auction policy and demonstrate its superiority over other methods. Simulation results show that the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) method performs superior to soft actor critic (SAC), MSWGA, and greedy methods. Moreover, a significant improvement is observed in fairness index compared to the traditional greedy auction methods. This improvement is as high as about 27% and 35% when deploying the MSWGA and DDPG methods, respectively.

We consider a two-user Gaussian interference channel with heterogeneous blocklength constraints (HB-GIC), strong interference, and two private messages. We propose to apply the successive interference cancellation with early decoding, i.e., decoding a message with a number of received symbols less than the blocklength at the receiver. We determine the necessary number of received symbols to achieve successful decoding of the longer codeword that satisfies the input power constraints and target average error probability constraints.
To attain the results, we investigate the dependence testing bound analysis over an independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) Gaussian input.
Besides, we derive the second-order achievable rate region of the considered HB-GIC. By numerical results based on the rate-profile approach, we compare the derived second-order rate region to the first-order one, which shows the rate back-off of the considered model due to the impact of finite blocklength.

When there exists IQI, the output RF signal is a widely linear transformation of the input signal, which may make the output signal improper. To compensate for IQI, we employ IGS, thus generating a transmit improper signal. We show that IGS alongside with NOMA can highly increase the minimum rate of the users. Moreover, we propose schemes for different operational modes of STAR-RIS and show that STAR-RIS can significantly improve the system performance. Additionally, we show that IQI can highly degrade the performance especially if it is overlooked in the design.

This paper proposes a general optimization framework for rate splitting multiple access (RSMA) in beyond diagonal (BD) reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) systems. This framework can provide a suboptimal solution for a large family of optimization problems in which the objective and/or constraints are linear functions of the rates and/or energy efficiency (EE) of users. Using this framework, we show that RSMA and RIS can be mutually beneficial tools when the system is overloaded, i.e., when the number of users per cell is higher than the number of base station (BS) antennas. Additionally, we show that the benefits of RSMA increase when the packets are shorter and/or the reliability constraint is more stringent. Furthermore, we show that the RSMA benefits increase with the number of users per cell and decrease with the number of BS antennas. Finally, we show that RIS (either diagonal or BD) can highly improve the system performance, and BD-RIS outperforms regular RIS.

This paper proposes an energy-efficient scheme for multicell multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) simultaneous transmit and reflect (STAR) reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS)-assisted broadcast channels by employing rate splitting (RS) and improper Gaussian signaling (IGS). Regular RISs can only reflect signals. Thus, a regular RIS can assist only when the transmitter and receiver are in the reflection space of the RIS. However, a STAR-RIS can simultaneously transmit and reflect, thus providing a 360-degrees coverage. In this paper, we assume that transceivers may suffer from I/Q imbalance (IQI). To compensate for IQI, we employ IGS. Moreover, we employ RS to manage intracell interference. We show that RIS can significantly improve the energy efficiency (EE) of the system when RIS components are carefully optimized. Additionally, we show that STAR-RIS can significantly outperform a regular RIS when the regular RIS cannot cover all the users. We also show that RS can highly increase the EE comparing to treating interference as noise.

In this paper, we develop a hierarchical aerial computing framework composed of high altitude platform (HAP) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to compute the fully offloaded tasks of terrestrial mobile users which are connected through an uplink non-orthogonal multiple access (UL-NOMA). To better assess the freshness of information in computation-intensive applications the criterion of age of information (AoI) is considered. In particular, the problem is formulated to minimize the average AoI of users with elastic tasks, by adjusting UAVs trajectory and resource allocation on both UAVs and HAP, which is restricted by the channel state information (CSI) uncertainty and multiple resource constraints of UAVs and HAP. In order to solve this non-convex optimization problem, two methods of multi-agent deep deterministic policy gradient (MADDPG) and federated reinforcement learning (FRL) are proposed to design the UAVs trajectory, and obtain channel, power, and CPU allocations. It is shown that task scheduling significantly reduces the average AoI. This improvement is more pronounced for larger task sizes. On one hand, it is shown that power allocation has a marginal effect on the average AoI compared to using full transmission power for all users. Compared with traditional transmission schemes, the simulation results show our scheduling scheme results in a substantial improvement in average AoI.

However, the high dimensionality makes the RIS optimization a complicated problem. In this work, we propose a machine learning approach to solve the problem of joint optimization of precoding and RIS configuration. We apply the RIS to realize the quasi-degradation of the channel, which allows for optimal precoding in closed form. The reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technology that enables wireless communication systems to achieve improved performance by intelligently manipulating wireless channels. In this paper, we consider the sum-rate maximization problem in a downlink multi-user multi-input-single-output (MISO) channel via space-division multiple access (SDMA). Two major challenges of this problem are the high dimensionality due to the large number of RIS elements and the difficulty to obtain the full channel state information (CSI), which is assumed known in many algorithms proposed in the literature. Instead, we propose a hybrid machine learning approach using the weighted minimum mean squared error (WMMSE) precoder at the base station (BS) and a dedicated neural network (NN) architecture, RISnet, for RIS configuration. The RISnet has a good scalability to optimize 1296 RIS elements and requires partial CSI of only 16 RIS elements as input. We show it achieves a high performance with low requirement for channel estimation for geometric channel models obtained with ray-tracing simulation. The unsupervised learning lets the RISnet find an optimized RIS configuration by itself. Numerical results show that a trained model configures the RIS with low computational effort, considerably outperforms the baselines, and can work with discrete phase shifts.

In this paper, we study the achievable rate region of 1-layer rate splitting (RS) in the presence of hardware impairment (HWI) and improper Gaussian signaling (IGS) for a single-cell reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted broadcast channel (BC). We assume that the transceivers may suffer from an imbalance in in-band and quadrature signals, which is known as I/Q imbalance (IQI). The received signal and noise can be improper when there exists IQI. Therefore, we employ IGS to compensate for IQI as well as to manage interference. Our results show that RS and RIS can significantly enlarge the rate region, where the role of RS is to manage interference while RIS mainly improves the coverage.

This paper proposes a general optimization framework to improve the spectral and energy efficiency (EE) of ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) simultaneous-transfer-and-receive (STAR) reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted interference-limited systems with finite block length (FBL). This framework can solve a large variety of optimization problems in which the objective and/or constraints are linear functions of the rates and/or EE of users. Additionally, the framework can be applied to any interference-limited system with treating interference as noise as the decoding strategy at receivers. We consider a multi-cell broadcast channel as an example and show how this framework can be specialized to solve the minimum-weighted rate, weighted sum rate, global EE and weighted EE of the system. We make realistic assumptions regarding the (STAR-)RIS by considering three different feasibility sets for the components of either regular RIS or STAR-RIS. Our results show that RIS can substantially increase the spectral and EE of URLLC systems if the reflecting coefficients are properly optimized. Moreover, we consider three different transmission strategies for STAR-RIS as energy splitting (ES), mode switching (MS), and time switching (TS). We show that STAR-RIS can outperform a regular RIS when the regular RIS cannot cover all the users. Furthermore, it is shown that the ES scheme outperforms the MS and TS schemes.

This work presents a machine learning approach to optimize the energy efficiency (EE) in a multi-cell wireless network. This optimization problem is non-convex and its global optimum is difficult to find. In the literature, either simple but suboptimal approaches or optimal methods with high complexity and poor scalability are proposed. In contrast, we propose a machine learning framework to approach the global optimum. While the neural network (NN) training takes moderate time, application with the trained model requires very low computational complexity. In particular, we introduce a novel objective function based on stochastic actions to solve the non-convex optimization problem. Besides, we design a dedicated NN architecture for the multi-cell network optimization problems that is permutation-equivariant. It classifies channels according to their roles in the EE computation. In this way, we encode our domain knowledge into the NN design and shed light into the black box of machine learning. Training and testing results show that the proposed method without supervision and with reasonable computational effort achieves an EE close to the global optimum found by the branch-and-bound algorithm. Hence, the proposed approach balances between computational complexity and performance.

In this work, we consider the problem of assigning two frequencies to each receiver in a multi-user communication system such that the average minimum receive power is maximized. In order to solve this problem, we introduce a generalization of the quadratic multiple knapsack problem to include heterogeneous profits and develop an algorithm to solve it. Compared to random frequency assignment, we report a gain of around 6 dB in numerical simulations.

Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) has emerged as a powerful multiple access, interference management, and multi-user strategy for next generation communication systems. In this tutorial, we depart from the orthogonal multiple access (OMA) versus non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) discussion held in 5G, and the conventional multi-user linear precoding approach used in space-division multiple access (SDMA), multi-user and massive MIMO in 4G and 5G, and show how multi-user communications and multiple access design for 6G and beyond should be intimately related to the fundamental problem of interference management. We start from foundational principles of interference management and rate-splitting, and progressively delineate RSMA frameworks for downlink, uplink, and multi-cell networks. We show that, in contrast to past generations of multiple access techniques (OMA, NOMA, SDMA), RSMA offers numerous benefits. We then discuss how those benefits translate into numerous opportunities for RSMA in over forty different applications and scenarios of 6G. We finally address common myths and answer frequently asked questions, opening the discussions to interesting future research avenues. Supported by the numerous benefits and applications, the tutorial concludes on the underpinning role played by RSMA in next generation networks, which should inspire future research, development, and standardization of RSMA-aided communication for 6G.

Algorithms based on combinatorial auctions show significant potential regarding their application for channel assignment problems in multi-connectivity ultra-reliable wireless networks. However the computational effort required by such algorithms grows fast with the number of users and resources. Therefore, preallocation-based combinatorial auction represents a promising approach for these setups. The aim of the preallocation is to constrain the number of bids submitted by participants in the combinatorial auction process, thus reducing computational demands and enabling numerical feasibility of the auction problem. Reduction of bid number is achieved via limiting the number of items (channels) considered by auction participants (tenants) in their bids. Thus the aim of preallocation is to non-exclusively assign channels to tenants. This assignment serves as a basis for the later bid generation in the auction procedure. In this paper we analyze the optimal parametrization of the many-to-many Gale-Shapley preallocation method and formulate recommendations for optimal performance. Numerical assessments illustrate that the appropriate preallocation has significant impact on the performance and computational demand.

In this paper, we propose an optimization framework for rate splitting (RS) techniques in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted systems, possibly with I/Q imbalance (IQI). This framework can be applied to any optimization problem in which the objective and/or constraints are linear functions of the rates and/or transmit covariance matrices. Such problems include minimum-weighted and weighted-sum rate maximization, total power minimization for a target rate, minimum-weighted energy efficiency (EE) and global EE maximization. The framework may be applied to any interference-limited system with hardware impairments. For the sake of illustration, we consider a multicell MIMO RIS-assisted broadcast channel (BC) in which the base stations (BSs) and/or the users may suffer from IQI. Since IQI generates improper noise, we consider improper Gaussian signaling (IGS) as an interference-management technique that can additionally compensate for IQI. We show that RS when combined with IGS can substantially improve the spectral and energy efficiency of overloaded networks (i.e., when the number of users per cell is larger than the number of transmit/receive antennas).

We consider a two-ray ground reflection scenario with unknown distance between transmitter and receiver. By utilizing two frequencies in parallel, we can mitigate possible destructive interference and ensure ultra-reliability with only very limited knowledge at the transmitter. In order to achieve this ultra-reliability, we optimize the frequency spacing such that the worst-case receive power is maximized. Additionally, we provide an algorithm to calculate the optimal frequency spacing. Besides the receive power, we also analyze the achievable rate and outage probability. It is shown that the frequency diversity scheme achieves a significant improvement in terms of reliability over using a single frequency. In particular, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach by a numerical simulation of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) flying above flat terrain.

We show that although the RIS can significantly improve the system performance, it cannot mitigate interference completely, so we have to employ other interference-management techniques to further improve performance. We show that the proposed NOMA-based IGS scheme can substantially outperform proper Gaussian signaling (PGS) and IGS schemes that treat interference as noise (TIN) in particular when the number of users per cell is larger than the number of base station (BS) antennas (referred to as overloaded networks). In other words, IGS and NOMA complement to each other as interference management techniques in multicell RIS-assisted BCs. Furthermore, we consider three different feasibility sets for the RIS components showing that even a RIS with a small number of elements provides considerable gains for all the feasibility sets.

The low-cost legitimate intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) are applied to the wiretap channel in physical layer security to enhance the secrecy rate. In practice, the eavesdropper can also deploy an IRS, namely illegitimate IRS, to deteriorate the secrecy rate. This paper studies the interplay between a transmitter, a legitimate IRS, and an illegitimate IRS in a multiple-input single-output (MISO) wiretap channel. We formulate a max-min secrecy rate problem, where all the information is available at the transmitter and the receivers. We aim to design an efficient transmit beamforming and phase shifting strategy of the legitimate IRS, under the worst-case secrecy rate achieved based on optimizing the phase-shifting strategy of the illegitimate IRS. We propose three solution methods based on the gradient descent ascent (GDA), the alternate optimization (AO), and the mixed Nash equilibrium (NE) in zero-sum games in strategic form. Simulation results show that for the continuous phase-shifting strategies, AO usually does not guarantee convergence, although it may achieve better performance than GDA in some iterations. GDA usually converges to a stationary point. Discrete phase-shifting strategies improve the convergence behavior of AO and GDA, while there is a single mixed NE with the highest secrecy rate.

Multimode fibers hold great promise to advance data rates in optical communications but come with the challenge to compensate for modal crosstalk and mode-dependent losses, resulting in strong distortions. The holographic measurement of the transmission matrix enables not only correcting distortions but also harnessing these effects for creating a confidential data connection between legitimate communication parties, Alice and Bob. The feasibility of this physical-layer-security-based approach is demonstrated experimentally for the first time on a multimode fiber link to which the eavesdropper Eve is physically coupled. Once the proper structured light field is launched at Alice's side, the message can be delivered to Bob, and, simultaneously, the decipherment for an illegitimate wiretapper Eve is destroyed. Within a real communication scenario, we implement wiretap codes and demonstrate confidentiality by quantifying the level of secrecy. Compared to an uncoded data transmission, the amount of securely exchanged data is enhanced by a factor of 538. The complex light transportation phenomena that have long been considered limiting and have restricted the widespread use of multimode fiber are exploited for opening new perspectives on information security in spatial multiplexing communication systems.

In this paper, we design a new smart softwaredefined radio access network (RAN) architecture with important properties like flexibility and traffic awareness for sixth generation (6G) wireless networks. In particular, we consider a hierarchical resource allocation framework for the proposed smart soft-RAN model, where the software-defined network (SDN) controller is the first and foremost layer of the framework. This unit dynamically monitors the network to select a network operation type on the basis of distributed or centralized resource allocation architectures to perform decision-making intelligently. In this paper, our aim is to make the network more scalable and more flexible in terms of achievable data rate, overhead, and complexity indicators. To this end, we introduce a new metric, throughput overhead complexity (TOC), for the proposed machine learning-based algorithm, which makes a trade-off between these performance indicators. In particular, the decision making based on TOC is solved via deep reinforcement learning (DRL), which determines an appropriate resource allocation policy. Furthermore, for the selected algorithm, we employ the soft actor-critic method, which is more accurate, scalable, and robust than other learning methods. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed smart network achieves better performance in terms of TOC compared to fixed centralized or distributed resource management schemes that lack dynamism. Moreover, our proposed algorithm outperforms conventional learning methods employed in other state-of-the-art network designs.

In particular, we introduce a new, modified Sato-type outer bound that can be applied in the finite blocklength regime and which does not require the same marginal property. We then develop and analyze composite shell codes, which are suitable for the HB-GBC. Especially, to achieve a lower decoding latency for the user with a shorter blocklength constraint when successive interference cancellation is used, we derive the number of symbols needed to successfully early decode the other user's message. We numerically compare our derived outer bound to the best known achievable rate regions. Numerical results show that the new early decoding performance in terms of latency reduction is significantly improved compared to the state of the art, and it performs very close to the asymptotic limit.

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is an emerging technology for future wireless communication systems. In this work, we consider downlink spatial multiplexing enabled by the RIS for weighted sum-rate (WSR) maximization. In the literature, most solutions use alternating gradient-based optimization, which has moderate performance, high complexity, and limited scalability. We propose to apply a fully convolutional network (FCN) to solve this problem, which was originally designed for semantic segmentation of images. The rectangular shape of the RIS and the spatial correlation of channels with adjacent RIS antennas due to the short distance between them encourage us to apply it for the RIS configuration. We design a set of channel features that includes both cascaded channels via the RIS and the direct channel. In the base station (BS), the differentiable minimum mean squared error (MMSE) precoder is used for pretraining and the weighted minimum mean squared error (WMMSE) precoder is then applied for fine-tuning, which is nondifferentiable, more complex, but achieves a better performance. Evaluation results show that the proposed solution has higher performance and allows for a faster evaluation than the baselines. Hence it scales better to a large number of antennas, advancing the RIS one step closer to practical deployment.

One of the important applications of molecular communication is the targeted drug delivery process in which the drug molecules are released toward the target (receiver) in a way that the side effects are minimized in the human body. As the total number of released molecules increases, the receiver cannot receive all of the transmitted drug molecules. Therefore, the molecules would be accumulated in the system which results in side effects in the body. In order to diagnose the appropriate transmission rate of the drug molecules, it is important to investigate the reception process of the receiver. In this paper, a reception model is studied using queuing theory. In the proposed model, the rejection rate of the drug molecules due to different reasons, such as random movement of the molecules, as well as the rejection rate due to active receptors are taken into account. Moreover, an interval consisting of the lower and upper bounds for the number of released molecules is presented based on the proposed model in order to determine the range of allowable dosage of the drug molecules. It is shown that the queuing theory can be successfully employed in accurate modeling of the reception process of the receiver in drug delivery applications.

We consider a general multi-connectivity framework, intended for ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC) services, and propose a novel, preallocation-based combinatorial auction approach for the efficient allocation of channels. We compare the performance of the proposed method with several other state-of-the-art and alternative channel-allocation algorithms. The two proposed performance metrics are the capacity-based and the utility-based context. In the first case, every unit of additional capacity is regarded as beneficial for any tenant, independent of the already allocated quantity, and the main measure is the total throughput of the system. In the second case, we assume a minimal and maximal required capacity value for each tenant, and consider the implied utility values accordingly. In addition to the total system performance, we also analyze fairness and computational requirements in both contexts. We conclude that at the cost of higher but still plausible computational time, the fairness-enhanced version of the proposed preallocation based combinatorial auction algorithm outperforms every other considered method when one considers total system performance and fairness simultaneously, and performs especially well in the utility context. Therefore, the proposed algorithm may be regarded as candidate scheme for URLLC channel allocation problems, where minimal and maximal capacity requirements have to be considered.

Future wireless access networks aim to simultaneously support a large number of devices with heterogeneous service requirements, including data rates, error rates, and latencies. While achievable rate and capacity results exist for Gaussian broadcast channels in the asymptotic blocklength regime, the characterization of second-order achievable rate regions for heterogeneous blocklength constraints is not available. Therefore, we investigate a two-user Gaussian broadcast channel (GBC) with heterogeneous blocklength constraints, specified according to users' channel output signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). We assume the user with higher output SNR has a shorter blocklength constraint. We show that with sufficiently large output SNR, the stronger user can perform the \textit{early decoding} (ED) technique to decode and subtract the interference via successive interference cancellation (SIC). To achieve it, we derive an explicit lower bound on the necessary number of received symbols for a successful ED, using an independent and identically distributed Gaussian input. A second-order rate of the weaker user who suffers from an SNR change due to the heterogeneous blocklength constraint, is also derived. Numerical results show that ED can outperform the hybrid non-orthogonal multiple access scheme when the stronger channel is sufficiently better than the weaker one. Under the considered setting, about 7-dB SNR gain can be achieved. These results shows that ED with SIC is a promising technique for the future wireless networks.

One of the most important aspects of moving forward to the next generation networks like 5G/6G, is to enable network slicing in an efficient manner. The most challenging issues are the uncertainties in computation and communication demand. Because the slices' arrive to the network in different times and their lifespans vary, the solution should dynamically react to online slice requests. The joint problem of online admission control and resource allocation considering the energy consumption is formulated mathematically. It is based on Binary Linear Programming (BLP), where, the $Γ$-Robustness concept is exploited to overcome Virtual Links (VL) bandwidths' and Virtual Network Functions (VNF) workloads' uncertainties. Then, an optimal algorithm is proposed. This optimal algorithm cannot be solved in a reasonable amount of time for real-world and large-scale networks. To find near-optimal solution efficiently, a new heuristic algorithm is developed. The assessments' results indicate that the efficiency of heuristic is vital in increasing the accepted requests' count, decreasing power consumption and providing adjustable tolerance vs. the VNFs workloads' and VLs traffics' uncertainties, separately. Considering the acceptance ratio and power consumption that constitute the two important components of the objective function, heuristic has about 7% and 10% optimality gaps, respectively, while being about 30X faster than that of optimal algorithm.

We introduce a phase hop** scheme for reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) in which the phases of the individual RIS elements are randomly varied with each transmitted symbol. This effectively converts slow fading into fast fading. We show how this can be leveraged to significantly improve the outage performance especially for small outage probabilities without channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter and RIS. Furthermore, the same result can be accomplished even if only two possible phase values are available. Since we do not require perfect CSI at the transmitter or RIS, the proposed scheme has no additional communication overhead for adjusting the phases. This enables robust ultra-reliable communications with a reduced effort for channel estimation.

In this work, we address the problem of finding globally optimal power allocation strategies to maximize the users sum-rate (SR) as well as system energy efficiency (EE) in the downlink of single-cell multicarrier non-orthogonal multiple access (MC-NOMA) systems. Each NOMA cluster includes a set of users in which the well-known superposition coding (SC) combined with successive interference cancellation (SIC) technique is applied among them. By obtaining the closed-form expression of intra-cluster power allocation, we show that MC-NOMA can be equivalently transformed to a virtual orthogonal multiple access (OMA) system, where the effective channel gain of these virtual OMA users is obtained in closed-form. Then, the SR and EE maximization problems are solved by using very fast water-filling and Dinkelbach algorithms, respectively. The equivalent transformation of MC-NOMA to the virtual OMA system brings new theoretical insights, which are discussed throughout the paper. The extensions of our analysis to other scenarios, such as considering users rate fairness, admission control, long-term performance, and a number of future next-generation multiple access (NGMA) schemes enabling recent advanced technologies, e.g., reconfigurable intelligent surfaces are discussed. Extensive numerical results are provided to show the performance gaps between single-carrier NOMA (SC-NOMA), OMA-NOMA, and OMA.

In this paper, we propose a joint radio and core resource allocation framework for NFV-enabled networks. In the proposed system model, the goal is to maximize energy efficiency (EE), by guaranteeing end-to-end (E2E) quality of service (QoS) for different service types. To this end, we formulate an optimization problem in which power and spectrum resources are allocated in the radio part. In the core part, the chaining, placement, and scheduling of functions are performed to ensure the QoS of all users. This joint optimization problem is modeled as a Markov decision process (MDP), considering time-varying characteristics of the available resources and wireless channels. A soft actor-critic deep reinforcement learning (SAC-DRL) algorithm based on the maximum entropy framework is subsequently utilized to solve the above MDP. Numerical results reveal that the proposed joint approach based on the SAC-DRL algorithm could significantly reduce energy consumption compared to the case in which R-RA and NFV-RA problems are optimized separately.

This paper proposes a novel approach to improve the performance of a heterogeneous network (HetNet) supported by dual connectivity (DC) by adopting multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as passive relays that carry reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs). More specifically, RISs are deployed under the UAVs termed as UAVs-RISs that operate over the micro-wave ($μ$W) channel in the sky to sustain a strong line-of-sight (LoS) connection with the ground users. The macro-cell operates over the $μ$W channel based on orthogonal multiple access (OMA), while small base stations (SBSs) operate over the millimeter-wave (mmW) channel based on non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). We study the problem of total transmit power minimization by jointly optimizing the trajectory/velocity of each UAV, RISs' phase shifts, subcarrier allocations, and active beamformers at each BS. The underlying problem is highly non-convex and the global optimal solution is intractable. To handle it, we decompose the original problem into two subproblems, i.e., a subproblem which deals with the UAVs' trajectories/velocities, RISs' phase shifts, and subcarrier allocations for $μ$W; and a subproblem for active beamforming design and subcarrier allocation for mmW. In particular, we solve the first subproblem via the dueling deep Q-Network (DQN) learning approach by develo** a distributed algorithm which leads to a better policy evaluation. Then, we solve the active beamforming design and subcarrier allocation for the mmW via the successive convex approximation (SCA) method. Simulation results exhibit the effectiveness of the proposed resource allocation scheme compared to other baseline schemes. In particular, it is revealed that by deploying UAVs-RISs, the transmit power can be reduced by 6 dBm while maintaining similar guaranteed QoS.

The key idea of power-domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is to exploit the superposition coding (SC) combined with successive interference cancellation (SIC) technique (called SC-SIC) while reducing the receivers' complexity as well as error propagation. Actually, NOMA suggests a low-complexity scheme, where users are grouped into multiple clusters operating in isolated resource blocks, and SC-SIC is performed among users within each cluster. In this paper, we propose a globally optimal joint intra- and inter-cluster power allocation for any arbitrary user grou** to maximize users' sum-rate. In this algorithm, we exploit the closed-form of optimal intra-cluster power allocation obtained in our previous work. Then, by transforming network-NOMA to an equivalent virtual network-OMA, we show that the optimal power allocation can be obtained based on the very fast water-filling algorithm. Interestingly, we observe that each NOMA cluster acts as a virtual OMA user whose effective channel gain is obtained in closed form. Also, each virtual OMA user requires a minimum power to satisfy the minimum rate demand of its real multiplexed user. In simulation results, we evaluate the performance gap between fully SC-SIC, NOMA, and OMA, in terms of users sum-rate, and outage probability.

To achieve perfect secrecy in a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian wiretap channel (WTC), we need to find its secrecy capacity and optimal signaling, which involves solving a difference of convex functions program known to be non-convex for the non-degraded case. To deal with this, a class of existing solutions have been developed but only local optimality is guaranteed by standard convergence analysis. Interestingly, our extensive numerical experiments have shown that these local optimization methods indeed achieve global optimality. In this paper, we provide an analytical proof for this observation. To achieve this, we show that the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions of the secrecy rate maximization problem admit a unique solution for both degraded and non-degraded cases. Motivated by this, we also propose a low-complexity algorithm to find a stationary point. Numerical results are presented to verify the theoretical analysis.

In this paper, we propose a novel joint intelligent trajectory design and resource allocation algorithm based on user's mobility and their requested services for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) assisted networks, where UAVs act as nodes of a network function virtualization (NFV) enabled network. Our objective is to maximize energy efficiency and minimize the average delay on all services by allocating the limited radio and NFV resources. In addition, due to the traffic conditions and mobility of users, we let some Virtual Network Functions (VNFs) to migrate from their current locations to other locations to satisfy the Quality of Service requirements. We formulate our problem to find near-optimal locations of UAVs, transmit power, subcarrier assignment, placement, and scheduling the requested service's functions over the UAVs and perform suitable VNF migration. Then we propose a novel Hierarchical Hybrid Continuous and Discrete Action (HHCDA) deep reinforcement learning method to solve our problem. Finally, the convergence and computational complexity of the proposed algorithm and its performance analyzed for different parameters. Simulation results show that our proposed HHCDA method decreases the request reject rate and average delay by 31.5% and 20% and increases the energy efficiency by 40% compared to DDPG method.

This paper investigates the problem of age of information (AoI) aware radio resource management for a platooning system. Multiple autonomous platoons exploit the cellular wireless vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) communication technology to disseminate the cooperative awareness messages (CAMs) to their followers while ensuring timely delivery of safety-critical messages to the Road-Side Unit (RSU). Due to the challenges of dynamic channel conditions, centralized resource management schemes that require global information are inefficient and lead to large signaling overheads. Hence, we exploit a distributed resource allocation framework based on multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL), where each platoon leader (PL) acts as an agent and interacts with the environment to learn its optimal policy. Existing MARL algorithms consider a holistic reward function for the group's collective success, which often ends up with unsatisfactory results and cannot guarantee an optimal policy for each agent. Consequently, motivated by the existing literature in RL, we propose a novel MARL framework that trains two critics with the following goals: A global critic which estimates the global expected reward and motivates the agents toward a cooperating behavior and an exclusive local critic for each agent that estimates the local individual reward. Furthermore, based on the tasks each agent has to accomplish, the individual reward of each agent is decomposed into multiple sub-reward functions where task-wise value functions are learned separately. Numerical results indicate our proposed algorithm's effectiveness compared with the conventional RL methods applied in this area.

We assume the transmitter knows the legitimate channel, but statistical knowledge of the eavesdropper's channel only. We propose a transmission scheme with artificial noise (AN) for such a channel. In particular, we formulate the corresponding optimization problem which aims to maximize the average secrecy rate and develop an algorithm to solve it. We apply this algorithm to actual measured MMF channels. As real fiber measurements show, for a 55 mode MMF we can achieve positive average secrecy rates with the proper use of AN. Furthermore, the gain compared to standard precoding and power allocation schemes is illustrated.

In this paper, a learning-aided content-based wireless image transmission scheme is proposed, where a multi-antenna-aided source wishes to securely deliver an image to a legitimate destination in the presence of randomly distributed eavesdroppers (Eves). We take into account the fact that not all regions of an image have the same importance from the security perspective. Hence, we propose a transmission scheme, where the source employs a hybrid method to realize both the error-free data delivery of public regions containing less-important pixels; and an artificial noise (AN)-aided transmission scheme to provide security for the regions containing large amount of information. Moreover, in order to reinforce system's security, fountain-based packet delivery is adopted: First, the source node encodes image packets into fountain-like packets prior to sending them over the air. The secrecy of our proposed scheme will be achieved if the legitimate destination correctly receives the entire image source packets, while conforming to the latency limits of the system, before Eves can obtain the important regions. Accordingly, the secrecy performance of our scheme is characterized by deriving the closed-form expression for the quality-of-security (QoSec) violation probability. Moreover, our proposed wireless image delivery scheme leverages the deep neural network (DNN) and learns to maintain optimized transmission parameters, while achieving a low QoSec violation probability. Simulation results are provided with some useful engineering insights which illustrate that our proposed learning-assisted scheme outperforms the state-of-the-arts by achieving considerable gains in terms of security and the delay requirement.
